The first time I read about them was when I read it in the Quran, the exact same verse you showed in the video, I used to thought there's only muslim, jews and christian stories in the quran, but then I find this, Now I'm curious and want to learn more about various religions in the world. great video

And about simon i dont really know about him so much but john the baptist had a lot of students which they where chased and killed in jerusalem and some of them with the people ran to irak and iran , the problem is that we dont have the names of them thats the sad part everyone of them wrote the books of adam and john but they were signed by the religious name of them so you cant guess who is who . I live in Sweden. I have met many Mandeans here. Worth mentioning is that many of them were goldsmiths back in Iraq. So sad that so many have had to flee. Hope for a better world for all minorities.

Hello...I'm from Malaysia. One thing that make me so interested is the words 'Mandai' & 'Mandi'. In Malay language word 'Pandai' = 'Knowledgeable'. And we call someone who do something by his/her own way without follow the instructions/orders or without asking the permission first is 'Memandai - mandai' We said Mandi = take a bath. And Bilik Mandi = bathroom. 😊

In the Qur'an, there are Sabians (Tsabians, Ṣabi'un) and Sabaeans (Sabian, Saba'iyyun), which souds very close to each other. To me, to identify Mandaeans as Sabians mentioned in the Qur'an seems the most logical. While Sabaeans are identified with the legendary South Arabian kingdom of Sheba. Additionally, there are another interpretation, which posit Sabians as Shivist Hindus, which interesting, although too far-fetched. Not sure if you covered these yet, but you should do Mazdakism and especially Manichaeism.

@@jrhermosura4600 no, Zoroastrians (or Mazdeans) are mentioned in Surah 22:17 as "Magians" which is a term they were frequently referred to as. Magians and Sabeans are completely different. Magians follow Zoroaster and Sabeans follow John the Baptist.
I know i mean about let's talk religion's comment, isn't mazdakism also zoroastrianism or no? But i do know that manichaeism, zoroastrianism and mandaeism are religions on their own right.
What i really don't like is making the exaggeration that we suffered under Saddam. It's actually the other way our people flourished under Saddam and many of us started to get educated in various professions. Saddam took good care of iraqs minoritys

There is a rather large community of subian in the southwestern province of khuzistan in Iran. From what I gathered by talking to Subi people, they mostly live in southeast Iraq and southwest Iran where there is flowing water.

Thank you for this. I am an open-minded Christian, a Roman Catholic, but open to studying other faiths and Christianity's successors and roots if only to appreciate my faith even more. I studied salient points of Islam and Judaism, and then I realized that John the Baptist and/or what he propagated played a good role in the development of Jesus' Ministry and the evolution of 1st century Christianity (the apostles and/or even Jesus Himself being former followers of John). Perhaps Mandaeanism might have that missing link to the story of John the Baptist and his movement (beyond the usual Gospel accounts), which holds the keys to knowing or at least in attempting to reconstruct who the Historical Jesus of Nazareth really is and what He stood for, beyond the usual rooted-from-Judaism narrative, or to understand and appreciate more Christianity and its system from a colleague-source or even a more immediate precursor-source.
It's really obvious to me that this religion influenced primitive Christianity even thought they are said to reject Jesus

Polycarp, student of John agreed, saying even HE couldn’t understand Paul. So, it’s not as though Paul is wrong and Antichrist, but Paul is certainly tough to understand. The Bible was formed through tradition, the same tradition always calls Paul an apostle. Moreover, when Luke describes the church meeting with regard to gentiles joining, they dispute about the laws of Moses - the conclusion is to abstain from unclean foods and sexual immorality, but no further burden is laid on the gentiles. James was at that council, and he writes the most explicit New Testament defense of the law - saying that faith without works is dead (something that Martin Luther hated and wanted excluded from the Bible, he thought a Jew who never met a Christian wrote it). But what does James call “the law”? He describes the “royal law” as loving our neighbor as ourself. 1 of the 2 chief commandments of Jesus. There is a strict moral code in most early Christian literature - including Paul!! So, we can’t take John’s epistles lightly, he isn’t resurrecting the law of Moses or contradicting Paul - he’s saying that your faith is tied in with your obedience to commandments (1 John 3 is what I’m thinking of). He’s echoing James in a less concrete way - “faith without works is dead” but John doesn’t call for works explicitly. What does John do? He simply says obey commandments, but which ones? He doesn’t give us a new one, but reminds us of one we’ve had from the beginning, remember what I’m referring to? Love your neighbor as yourself! The royal law from James, the “better way” from Paul, the 2nd of the 2 great commandments of Jesus, part of the Shema which Jews have said every day for millennia! If we don’t have that, we’re toast, 1 John makes that pretty clear. There doesn’t seem to be a Bible scholar on earth who thinks the Johannine epistles and the Pauline epistles can’t stand together. At least none I’m aware of.

I am ashamed to admit that as a middle eastern who loves religion and studying religions, I never heard of this beautiful faith. When you mentioned the baptism, my first thought is Mashallah. the commitment that takes inspires awe and I remember all the time I rushed uduu as a kid and feel pang of guilt. I have no doubt this beautifulfaith will find way to survive. As middle easterns, our roots are deep, you cut us down and we will rise back up.

In Ethiopian history there is sayed about sabian people who migrated from Yemen and have founded the aksumite dynasty(which began by Queen Sheba) and had their own language it's kind of fascinating when you see how far it goes( the history I mean) if it is the same people they have a very big history .

@@persona8991 According to our beliefs we think that the mandaeans are the last gnostic religion and we traces our beliefs all the way back to John the Baptist, Aram, Seth, Noah, Shem, and Adam. To identify mandaeanizm (Mandaiyi) means menda id hayyi (Hayyi) whom we call God ( or the living) and Manda means knowledge or gnosis and therefore means "gnostic" but today it denotes the “laity” as distinct from the priests (tarmidi “disciples”) and “initiates” (nasoraiyi).

I was always curious about them, never knew what they were called until today. I got to see them briefly along the Tigris River, conducting their baptism ritual, when I was in Iraq in 2003. Hi Filip, another wonderful video. Or I would rather say the content was articulate, objective and wonderful. However, I was wondering about a slide presented at 5:05 which describes different worlds (light, material and dark). On the down-left corner we can see a North direction sign. Is that a mistake or is there any significance of direction in this religion? Thanks

Cosmic north not magnetic north is very significant. It is the direction of the Mandaean home the worlds of light. This has led to them being called star worshippers as they perform all ritual facing the north star. Although the depiction of earth in a grey mixture is highly inaccurate and the earth is in the midst of the worlds of darkness.
I read some of the comments and also replys to them including the one saying that mandeanism is similar to Hinduism. Most of the religions have some basic principles which are similar. They relate to good and evil and concepts of reward and punishment. So it is possible to find similarity in basics without chants like har har mahadev etc. But religions have an unfortunate similarity too and that is calling other people's religions as false and prophet's as heretics. I request all those who, like me, watch this channel, use the knowledge about others to unite as simply human beings, respect other's views and believe in hindu ideal of considering the entire world as family. Let me tell you that I am a Muslim by faith.

If you are Indian then I want to congratulate you for your thoughts. I am a Hindu and I resonate with your comment. We can take good aspects of all religions and then can treat each other fairly and with acceptance. If any aspect of Religion calls us for persecution of people with whom we share differences then we have to reject the calling and this I believe is the real calling of the God.

Wow, the word for smart in Malay is 'Pandai' (similar to Mandai) and the word for bath in Malay is Mandi, the word for baptism for the Mandeans.

Nice video, I would like to make a couple of points. 1. the beliefs regarding the origin of the world and man, i.e. the cosmology of Mandaean thought, meditation and prayer is not varied, as much as it is a bit scattered, as there are some points or names that can be seen to have some contradiction or disagreement between the various and copious scrolls. But the basis is not variegated, the cosmology is in essence soundly orthodox across these writings. 2. You say there is a prohibition against weapons, well the priests (Nasoraeans) wear a skandola (an iron ring with elements that bind the evil, talismanic emblems are embossed (lion, snake, wasp and scorpion) on the rings with an iron chain connected to a small dagger.
I was really fascinated about the similarities in the words of the word Manda/Mandai(knowledge). I am from Kerala that's south india. In the local language malayalam and in tamil the word Mandai refers to head, so it can be linked to knowledge.. Does this language have root to the Dravidian language like the Brahui in Afghanistan??
It comes from Sanskrit word Munda -shaved head, representing knowledge head without impurities (also for Hindu monks)

I am Mandaean. Although you didn't mention EVERYTHING about our religion, you did mention some good things. In our religion you cant do boy/girl friend, be LGBT , get pregnant before marriage or that means certain hell. There is WAY more because our religion is VERY strict. I love my religion so much, thank you for spreading our religion.

I recently met a Mandaean girl and become curious about her religion. At first she said the Mandaean religion is like Christianity but then I realised they don’t believe in Jesus Christ like we Christians do.

Yes, they were called "St. John's Christians" and called themselves that, at one point in time. But this was to avoid persecution. They are neither Christians or Jews.
The cross is not a symbol of anything to them, they say. It is just there to hold their banners, or sacred cloths, that they set up when they do rituals. The banners are very special. Good question on reincarnation.
