Dude! That's so cool that you've started printing the parts for the camera arm! Great video ✌️
It is going to make his life a lot easier filming his vids.
Thanks for designing that, I'm going to be making one soon. It's overkill for my little mirrorless, but too cool to not make.
Yes indeed, very cool, he did mention it a few times in several videos. I'm going to do something like that too...
I don't have the space or need for the full rig, but I'm thinking of adapting the design for my space.
Hello Mr. Chappel
THAT RATTLE IS THE KEYRING ON THE USB STICK, MAKERS MUSE HAD THE SAME ISSUE!
I hope he sees this
Yep, had me wondering too until I removed the keyring 😂
So did I, took a while to figure that out haha.
Wait seriously?! It's been driving me crazy!
really? Mine is the bowden tube, the filament is tapping it from the inside by the extruder during retractions. I stopped using the included flashdrive right away because it doesn't have a clear right-side up
Thanks for showing off the engine benchmark! :D I'll might have to try to get my hands on one of these minis at some point!
Loved the Video , Hope to see more of the construction of your over head video Camera Arm . Stay healthy and safe !
Broken thermistor, bad bearing, and random rattle are not “minor” for a newbie (which is likely the target demographic) and represent some quality control problems. Could be a one off problem or something more systemic. Nevertheless good review Joel.
It seems like he has an early version. I remember the first few batches has issues like these.
My model from Sep 20 had similar issues and more. It’s not just the early models with problems.
I've had mine for about 6 weeks now and put about 300 hours on it already, its a bloody workhorse.
I have been running my mini almost continuously for 6 months now. The extruder makes a funny noise when it retracts and sometimes I hear a rattle, but it prints fine so I don't care. Compared to the constant TLC my first printer needed when I was a newbie a few years ago, this thing is a dream. It just prints well all of the time.
@@GdalyaRoth my first 'real' printer was a Prusa MK2 and it still works very well (though is showing its age). After purchasing a CR10, I do know what it is like to have a less feature-rich printer that needs more attention. I always recommend Prusa over anything else I've used.
I love that your making Alexandre's rig. I just discovered his channel it is amazing!!!
Looking forward to seeing more on the camera arm. Nice review and awesome T-shirt.
That camera arm is amazing, also cringing at the filament tower lol!
I've been waiting for your review on it for so long. Keep coming looking for it :D Thanks
You've inspired me to take the plunge into 3D printing and I have purchased this printer. Love the videos. Keep being you!
How do you like it? I'm looking at purchasing it as well!
@@nickungefug364 I absolutely love it! The interface and community backing this printer are incredible. However, be prepared to wait (COVID). I ordered a kit in December and got it in March. It's worth it!
@@steveoffutt7591 Thank you!
Great review Joel, as always
I absolutely love my prusa mini. I have not had any issues with my machine so far and i love it to bits. I really appreciate having a machine i can trust to just work right out of the box and not give me trouble. If i even need to buy another machine i would get this one again in a heart beat.
Thanks so much i was waiting for this. Awesome video btw
Finally!!!!!! I love your videos and i've been waiting for this review. The moment I saw a Prusa mini on a blue background I knew.... Tell maker's muse I'm waiting for him too :)
We got ours last week for printing work test pieces it's been printing constantly over the weekend getting to understand it's limits. Really happy with the print quality in the past I've sent prototypes out and have had them made in SLS and SLA and honestly would be happy showing them to customers. I did have an issue yesterday when the extruder started clicking which I was disappointed about but the documentation on the website had me back up and running within an hour and I think I could sort the same issue out in 10 minutes now. One of the key reasons I went for it was the price point, the reputation of Prusa, but also being designed and engineered in Europe it has to meet certain safety standards which for me was a big selling point.
That's awesome it's so small and looks portable as all heck nice review Joel
Good review. You put a lot of effort into the video 👍
Joel, I love your channel and I love my mini!!! I had the same two issues with mine. The noises near the cooling fan are caused by the wires that are so close. Just pull them away from the fan and it's good to go. I solved the USB drive issue by using a USB extension cable. Not sure why that worked. I think it has something to do with the physical connection.
I started with an ender 3 and loved it but wanted to get a printer with bed leveling and quality. So I researched and purchased the mini. Best decision works great. The stock flexible bed is perfect for pla which I print in most often. Good buy.
Nice review. Also enjoyed the live stream with your daughter. I've been running my mini sort of in production based type scenario. I really, really love that after the part is done, I just remove the stuff from the build sheet, and "reprint" click to start again. It's been consistent. Couldn't say the same for my Ender 3, unfortunately. I tried, I really did. I hope I can sell the goods im making, and buy a 2nd Mini
I am very happy with my Mini. My USB stick also failed after a few prints, and I have noticed a occasional rattle while printing. But since my first Benchy (which printed flawlessly) I have been extremely pleased with my printer.
Hi I have two Minis and a MK3S Prusa Printers. Like you I find the Mini to be a great machine, so much so I do not now use the MK3S unless the model needs a bigger building plate. Thank you for your entertaining and instructive videos.
I've been using the Mini for about 8 months now and it has gone through hundreds of prints. I keep it well maintained and only had to replace a single nozzle and PTFE-tube (the one it came with was too short). I keep having to adjust the settings though, while every screw is checked. I am getting a lot more stringing now than 8 months ago. But all in all it is holding up pretty well. I probably would have chosen the MK3 if I had to choose all over again, but all in all it is a nice quality little printer.
I bought a Prusa Mini this summer and it did take 8 weeks or more to get here. It is a great replacement for my Printrbot Simple Metal. I also couldn't get good results from the rough build plate and switched to the finer grain build plate. I too have the runout sensor. I have been using the color change by level feature of the Prusa Slic3r to give prints like my Ezekiel's Wheel puzzle a more interesting look. So far it's been great.
Joel the fan noise can be fixed by putting 1 or 2 drops of machine oil in the back of the fan (behind the sticker). That fixed it for me on a couple BTT fans.
Interesting review! I know others have had a lot of complaints about that direct drive setup. But you certainly don’t seem to have that issue at all! High Five!
Awesome Joel, Thank you for the review of our greenTEC Pro. The Mini is a great printer! Best is to print GreenTEC pro with 220c and 230 max. Cooling on max. This should prevent the stringing issues. You know who to contact in case you have any issues ;)
I loved watching Alexandre print them all and assemble everything! This really is tempting to pick up the mini (well in 2 months lol). That's a great price and would be nice to have a desktop size versus my Predator.
My USB stick stopped working, I popped it into my Mac, formatted it for MS-DOS and it works GREAT. Faster than ever. Love, Love, Love my Mini+. I get great prints and think Joseph Prusa is DA MAN!
6:14 those spools are really close to falling over
in the last few seconds of the video they fell
That was an easy prediction it seems: 13:46
pure chaos
That stack of filament had me triggered.
in the last few seconds of the video they fell
@@florianix8272 I know but it was blurred.
I was happy to see it was still almost falling over at a later cut. I was sure it fell over when he bumped it with the box :D
The Prusa Mini is my first printer and has been awesome!
Great review. I love my Minis. I use them in production line with my MK3Ss and they're all just great. For the bed thermistor, I had that issue on one and Prusa sent me a replacement that arrived in 3 days. About that USB stick that came with the MINI, it's garbage, just toss it. Neither of mine ever worked from the start and many others have reported the same. Keep up the great work!
Great review man! I had no idea Alexander had files for that camera arm!!!!!!!!!! Must find out more!

He has some great videos about different make things. love that channel
could be fun to watch one of you guys trying to assemble this arm :-D
Would be epic
Ur a frade
Great video! I am considering setting up a small print farm, and for the price and size, this might fit my needs....could get almost three of these for the price of one Mk3!!
Really glad other people are having success with the Mini. Maybe one day I’ll buy another and try it again.
I've loved my mini so far. But out of the box it was very picky about filaments, with some heat creep issues. Strongly recommend the 3d party heat break upgrade. It fixes all the layer inconsistencies and works through any filament brand now. Also, the included USB flash stick developed bad sectors after a while that caused prints to fail/halt. Seems like I'm not the only one that had to throw away that stick.
Love the Shirt! Chris has an awesome channel! :)
Yeah he does!
The Prusa Mini also has issues with jamming and clogging as well as with the Minda probe. Before you buy, I recommend reading their forums. I owned mine for about five weeks, during which time I only printed Prusament PLA using default settings. I had to (at the direction of Prusa support) completely take apart the extruder four times and the hot end twice, eventually replacing the entire hot end with a new one they sent me. Over the course of five weeks, the printer spent about half that time down for parts and repairs. Prusa support was excellent throughout, but at the end they agreed my unit needed to come back (at my shipping expense). Overall, it was a big disappointment. If you had a different experience, I’m happy for you. Mine wasn’t great.
I almost bought one of these until I found out that it does not have an all metal hot end and no one can give me a solid answer if you can upgrade the printer to have one. I understand that Prusa may be trying to keep this printer from being copied, but it already has been copied and the clone is half the price.
@@MichaelJHathaway The clone is not half the price. It's more like $300 vs $440. And then you have to replace some parts that are not good enough...
I purchased my I3 Mark III as a kit; I had some problems with it, mostly due to errors in assembly. Eventually, after about three months, I returned it to Prusa and exchanged it for a pre-assembled model. I've had occasional issues with it over the last year, most notably a broken thermistor wire, which was an easy fix. I also had to replace my hotend, as mine had gotten fully jammed with PETG (that one was ALSO my fault). I've probably spent around $300 over the course of the year, but my printer is working like a champ. The print quality is still very, very high, and the reliability is awesome. All I really have to due is to insure there's enough glue stick applied to the PEI sheet, and my first layer goes down great; once I have a good first layer, the rest is easy. I could probably tweak the settings better - I do get some stringing now and then - but overall, I'm really happy with this machine - which is now a Mark 3S (the upgrade ended up being free - thanks, Josef). If the Mini is even half as good as the full-size, then I'd say it's an excellent buy. Before buying, I watched Maker's Muse, Tom Sandlanderer -- and of course, Joel; however, it was really Joel's review of the I3MkIII that put me over the top and helped me pick this printer over others I was looking at. I've been a fan of his ever since. TLDR; Please consider donating some money to the Seattle Children's Hospital. It's a really worthy cause, and we all need to help somehow.
I have the complete same experience ... seems to be a well paid review like the most here ... forums are full of problems with this machine... i have also a creality ender 3 which has also things to update, but no problems so far and the print quality is better for a lower price, bigger printbed. I am very disappointed that you have to pay for a bug of prusa the shipping expense by your self!
@@tamgaming9861 In my experience, Joel's reviews are completely honest. He's not getting paid to review these machines. Yes, he's getting one for free -- but his opinions are still honest. He breaks down the plusses and minuses of each machine. I mean, if he weren't honest, would he have reported the problems with the machine? No.
Thank you so much for making such awesome and helpful videos. I'd love to see one about your top 5 best "benchmark / calibration" tests, what they mean, and how to tweak the machine to get it right. Unless you've already done that -- in which case -- can I get the video title?
I just finished assembling my first Prusa, a MK3S, right then this video dropped. N I O C E
Well that is one type of timing.
I think the prusa mini is a perfect beginner 3D-Printer. I got mine in July. It's so easy and self-explaning. Easy building, Plug it in, Load filament, Plug usb-stick in, Print one of the example-models or slice something with the standard settings in prusa slicer. I think it works like a charm. I had NO problem until now. One thing I really don't like is the single Z-Axis, but the printer is stable enough.
I ordered Sovol SV01 (my first) on Thursday at 10 am. On Wednesday at 10am I already had the printer. Absurdly fast international shipping. Many reviews praise this printer, but it is a relatively unknown. Tomorrow after work I will put it together and post info on YT as I get the printouts.
I've got mine few months ago, I printed PLA, ASA and FLEX, without any problem. Just a cohesion issue, but was my fault because I didn't washed the bed. A great idea is to make an enclosure (mine is a foto enclosure like prusa suggested), ASA and FLEX are in an close box with silica gel.
To everyone who's USB drive isn't recognized by the printer: You can try changing the partition table of the USB stick from GPT to MBR, as some printers don't like GPT. How you can do that? Open command prompt as administrator and enter "diskpart" > "list disk" > "select disk X" > "clean" > "convert MBR" > "create partition PRIMARY" > "select partition 1" > "format fs=fat32 quick". Just make sure you select the right disk, cause this is gonna wipe it. When done, the printer should have no problem recognizing the USB stick.
I was figuring this as a condition. There's no reason Y U can't just use a different USB stick in place of the troublesome one as it's fixed up. They R EZ to come by.
@@SaltGrains_Fready What exactly are you trying to tell me? No one ever said anything about, not just buying a replacement one everytime your Mac or some other device reformats it as GPT instead of MBR. If that's what you want to do, I am not gonna hold you back. You do you, as for everyone else who isn't willing to buy a new USB stick everytime it gets reformatted as GPT, my solution should be simple enough.
@@XXDoMi77 I mean rotating them not just replacing all the time. Y does it always go to GBR in the first place..?? I uses only pc's for everything - I abandoned crapple 5 yrs ago after 25 yrs of bondage with them.
Hello there, what temp did you print the Extrudr filament with? Great video by the way! I love the engine model, too, that guy made a v-twin version and is planning on releasing V8 and stuff! :)
100% agree. Love love love the mini!
I'm just waiting for the tower of filament rolls on the left to fall over! Ohhhh the suspense!!!

@@JoeStanfordDoughty I know, I know, I saw it after replying 😉
Hi Joel, thanks for the reviews and info, keep it up. This year I tried to become a Prusa boy too but failed. I bought a Mini with high hopes but sadly a major design flaw sent my mini back home and my Prusa boy membership was no more. Anyway enough of the banter. The MINDA type level probe is a huge problem in environments where the temperature is not constant. The trigger level varies with temperature. My print farm lives in out buildings which are not heated at night so the printers start cold in the morning and warm up through the day. The Prusa mini will not consistently level in this situation. The results are high first layers, nozzle dragging across the expensive print bed and prints stuck so tight to the bed that the bed is delaminated when removing. I don't have 30 minutes to set up the printer level for every print and there is no manual bed level option so the Prusa mini was totally unsuitable for me. Prusa appear to have attempted to cover up this issue by setting the minimum start temperature to 15C. This also renders the mini unusable for me for about 5 months a year. Buyer beware. The mini is great for indoor heated rooms but is unsuitable for colder print farm rooms.
I second that! I had to improvise a construct with an enclosure, blankets ontop and hot waterbottles inside to get my Mini working in 12°C surroundings (my garage). This is just dumb. I have to leat it warm up at least one hour before I can even think of trying a first layer calibration. Prusa should have mentioned this when advertising this product. INDOORS ONLY!
I ordered a mini last night so now the wait is happening :)
I have had my Mini for about 3 months now and I can only partially agree. While it works absolutely fine (despite a lot of stringing) with Prusament, it was a complete nightmare with cheaper filaments. Naive young me thought it would be a good idea to purchase a plain white RYKE PLA spool from Amazon for prototyping. Oh boy. That was a mistake. I easily spent 10 hours of my freetime trying to get this stuff to even extrude properly. The nozzle constantly clogged and the extruder jammed regularly with this material. However, after hours of trial and error, cold pulls and extruder cleaning and idler tension adjustments I found a solution that worked somehow. I used a 0.6mm nozzle and printed at 230°C, which was the only way to get a proper extrusion. However, even with that milestone, I had some molten filament drip out of the hotend, like ABOVE the heaterblock, where the hotend is screwed into the heater block. This requires regular removal of molten PLA in hourly intervals during printing. Not cool! I tried to print that crappy filament away as fast as possible before something else went wrong and I was so happy when I could finally return to Prusament. Tldr: if you consider buying a Prusa Mini, do yourself a favour and stick to Prusament only. There are a lot of reports of people complaining that other filament brands just don't work on this machine. I learned it the hard way.
That leaning tower of PLA had me stressed out waiting for it to fall. :)
I had the same issue with the supplied USB stick, so far the stick I'm using instead is okay. I put a 0.25mm nozzle on my Mini and I use it to print D&D miniatures and other small, fine detail parts and the results are great.
Interesting review. I definitely want another cheap and affordable printer to go along with my ender 3. I'll look into this one once I get a resin printer. I'm considering the anycubic photon. Also I was just waiting for that leaning tower of spoolsa to fall the whole video lol
Perfect timing. I'm currently thinking about buying one
I'm loving it. About sticking PLA on that rough plate, well, yes, it's not holding well but so far zero prints lost due to lack of grip, but after the print is finish and the heated bed is cooled down, the print just falls off, so it''s better to use a smooth plate for important PLA projects, and that smooth plate has little texture too, it's not glossy look. I'm satisfied with both. No way I'm moving back to printers with manual bed leveling and non-removable bed sheets. The only drawback is looooooong waiting time, 2 months :D
@@banny123456 yeah, I'm currently enjoying a 8 week leadtime
Every time there are some "layer inconsistencies" or imperfections of some sort Joel (and others) blame it on "the filament is not calibrated" or "settings not tweaked". Why is that? If there would be one instance where calibrating would be worth the time it would be a 3d printer review? I don't think this is fair
I have that issue even with Prusament. Some guy with bondtech extruder also has that problem. Apart from that, the printer is great
Over extrusion causes adhesion issues
This is called Issue 602, every printer has it and Prusa did alot a research to combat this issue.
I agree i would say that he is biased. Honestly its not bad for the price but an ender 3 would do similar if not better
Yeah the 'filament not calibrated' doesn't make sense to me, sounds like Joel's printer suffers from the same over/under-extrusion issues that some other reviewers had, because the filament almost jams, causing underextrusion, then the jam starts moving and causes overextrusion.
This is my 2nd time watching this. both times watching I sat here waiting for the spool stack to fall over LOL
I started with mine 2 weeks ago, it's going pretty well so far; no major issues to report. I can't quite get PLA to stick to the textured PEI sheet either, but I'm putting that down to me being a noob.
I also have the rattling and cooling fan spin-up noise problem, but on the MK3-S. What solved the fan problem for me was loosening the fan screws by half a turn so that the fan housing does not warp. After all, the fan hardly weighs anything (and the fan housing isn't very strong). I don't know if that works for the mini fan though. For the rattling I have to investigate further, but it might be a belt grinding somewhere. Thx for your awesome videos! Sorry for all the "fans" in my post, but I'm a big fan :-)
How did the thermistor fail repetitive movement, or did it get caught on something?
Totally Awesome. That little unit is a freaking workhorse !! Try to compile the stats and demographics of who and where there also is the same conditions with a unit which U found on one of them.
i am using my cr6-se creality white filament in my mk3s on default prusa settings and just love it it prints so good.
I HAVE ONE. probably will get another soon. the issues are spot on, but way less than anything else in the price range.
I loved this!!! ❤❤
I just kept staring at the precariously balanced filament spools... I can say, my Mini is a "here's the print, usual make sure the first layer is good, walk away" printer. It just works.
I got that exact same fan noise ay 09:45 on my CR-6 SE ... from brand new.. not even after printing for hours like that mini did
Love my mini. Out of the box perfect.
Mine works perfectly out of the box. Printing for 6weeks now and had not a single issuea at all
Hey Joel, amazon has a USB stick you can put your SD card in and maybe you can upload your files easier. Love your stuff Hi Fives from TN.
Can you show the filament change mid-part some time? How does the machine cope with part cooling during the switch?
Great video. What filaments did you use to print the objects in ur vid?
Compared to a Biqu BX, considering I want to print tethered to a Raspi anyway, which one would you recommend for me as a starter? I want to have the option to print flexibles in the future, so I'd prefer something with a direct drive extruder.
I want to see you build that camera rig!
Hi Joel. My mini is from the 1st batch and had the same usb problems. In my case it was a bad board. Prusa sent me another one and it has been working great.
How do you know WHAT batch you have though? Mine arrived in July 2020 and had the same sort of problems others have had. I have bought a Bondtech extruder for it now since I was dismantling the 'original' extruder on almost a daily basis, so much so that the bowden tube 'out' port's thread for the brass tube assembly had worn away throwing ocasional orange plastic into the Prusa extruder. I mentioned it to support but they did nothing and didn't even offer to send me a replacement part for that bit of the extruder. I shouldn't have to be dismantling major components of a premium priced printer that is only 4 months old !
@@BusinessButlers I ordered right after it was announced and got it on December 2019. One thing i did notice was the extruder was too tight. There is a screw on it that you can loosen up near the bottom. It kept eating away the filament and make it rough so it would jam.
That’s great to hear
Ordered one today!
Great video Joel! I think the Prusa mini is really nice with great features. Is the Prusa mini open source?
Is Josef prusa rich as a mountain troll. Dumb question.
@@usernamel-f952 but it is open source...
Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these! The lead times are pretty long. Anyone else wish we had a Prusa factory stateside? If I were to win the lotto, I would absolutely look into it)))
I crank up the first layer to 265C for PLA to get it to stick really good. Your slicer should have an option to do this.
For that price I can think of other printers that will do just as well- including ecosystem- and give me more space to print. But what works for you, works for you.
Joel, can you please explain what you mean by calibrating for specific filaments? Maybe make a video on even how to do so. That would be awesome! Thank you.
What color Spidermaker filament is your brown? It looks great but I see they have 3 different matte brown colors. Thanks and great review. 👍
Hi Joel, I've been using the Prusa Mini for quite some time now and I absolutely love it! I had some technical problems in the beginning. There was a problem with the extruder but thanks to the awesome helpdesk I was able to fix that. Also my usb drive had a problem and it took me quite some time to figure out that was why the printer wasn't printing properly (it wouldn't let me change the settings during print anymore). This being my first 3d printer it was a bit of a learning curve but now I feel I really understand the machine. Great stuff!
for the raddling did you check to see if was just the key chain ring on the usb stick, It has happened to me multiple times
Had the same weird noise on the y axis. I used a mechanics stethoscope and moved the y axis backwards and forwards to narrow down where the noise was coming from. Mine seems to stem from the y axis idler pulley area but replacing it hasn't worked
There is a known issue with bad USB sticks sent from Prusa. I got my Mini about 3 weeks ago, mixed results so far, but the only machine failures I've had were related to that USB. Had 3 failures with watchdog error resets because the USB stick they sent preloaded with files is physically bad in some way. everything i have sent through octoprint has worked great, everything printed with prusament looks great. now I just have to tune for stringing on this MatterHachers Build PLA.
Joel, I had that same issue with the USB Drive not reading in the Prusa but being read fine on the PC, I noticed if I just pulled it out without ejecting it wouldnt work, so if I ejected it safely then it would read. weird, but now I just use Octoprint and skip that step all together.
What print settings were used for those tests? I have a snapmaker A350 which has been pretty good but i'm getting some odd issues which may just be filament problems
Great video. Im a newbie to this but what would you consider one of the best budget printers i would say up to 400$
Great review as always , thanks for the details and the laughs. Can someone tell me where to find the " mini Joel " stl , would love to have him onboard my RC scale crawler 💪💪👍👍😁
I had the same problem with the USB Stick. It works fine on my PC but not on the Mini. Tried to reformat and tried different printer firmwares. Other sticks work fine.
I can't stop looking at that stack of filament roles teetering on the edge... It even starts wobbling for a bit on the verge of falling.
About the USB, you could try to format it. Both windows and Mac have a built in tool.
I had the same problem with two of the mini usb sticks. I fixed it with not changing usb stick while it‘s powered on. I don‘t know if it kills USB sticks but i saw little bit electricity while changing the sticks.
what about dimensional accuracy like thickness in X,Y and Z and squareness?
for anyone that is having the rattling problem its the part cooling fan mine does the same but I got a new one
Hows the trouble shooting on these Joel? Thinking these might be good units to get my kids started on.
Two prusa mini's in our school's lab and they had severe jamming. Tried lots of hot/cold pulls, disassembling and reassembling, and reseating the ptfe tube in the extruder. If the tube is deformed or a particle gets stuck in the nozzle, the parts have to be replaced or at the very least for the ptfe tube flipped 180. Did not realize it was a single drive extruder until opening it up. They are functional, just need something a little more than a beginner's knowledge to keep them running which isn't too unique for the $450 price
@npgoalkeeper _ tried the needle a few times and the printer jammed again in less than a minute of printing. The needle has worked before on other printers just no luck with the prusa mini
