  • And we cap off the Hollow Knight adventure (for now!) with a highly requested video. I would like to state that a lot of this video does not give me any major revelations of "wow so cool I am learning so much!" because we did take in a lot of this information during my playthrough itself! If this video brought you here, and you'd like to see my first time reactions, thoughts, theories and feelings to the big stuff in this lovely world and story we've experienced, my full playthrough can be found here! kzhead.info/channel/PLhnazjUB_WkKZmlbbZyLYF4b7k3UlzJAu.html

Doing this allowed me to beat P5 in 3 attempts, only dying to Markoth and Radiance. Give it a shot, you got this!

  • Let it be known that mossbag is “the” lore guy but nobody can be certain of anything and it is absolutely okay and maybe even encouraged to disagree with some points. The lore video serves as a general path that one could follow. It creates a sort of time line and you yourself can see what fits In that time line.

  • The name "Hornet" comes from her initial, pretty much unconfirmed lore. Hornet was said to be the child of three queens, one birthed, one raised, and one trained. The old (possibly still relevant) lore states that she was born to Herrah, raised by the White Lady, and trained in combat by Hive Queen Vespa. Whether this lore is still true, is unconfirmed, but Team Cherry has explicitly said that that is certainly where her name comes from.

    @thatoneperson4666@thatoneperson4666 Жыл бұрын
    • Hornet and the Hive Knight both have a move in combat that are similar to the other, the ones with the spike balls they summon. Hornet makes her own spin on the move by incorporating suspending the balls on silk threads. So that makes sense if she was taught to fight by the bees.

  • You also have to understand that this *is* mostly a recap video. Basically a collection of the most broadly important topics. For deep dives into specific topics mossbag has separate videos where he goes really deep into just one topic and also provides all the sources for them. But for this one, since this video is supposed to act as like a summary of the lore, he didn't wanna make the video too long by going deep into every topic. Which is why it is just surface level.

    @adityaflashraj@adityaflashraj Жыл бұрын
    • I think this is the most important point. This video is a recap to make things about Hollow knight cohesive. • Well geez. Just to balance out the comment section here, I’d just like to let everyone know that it’s totally okay to think this video is funny, I couldn’t stop laughing the first time I watched it. It’s a very particular sense of humor that lots of people don’t vibe with, but plenty of other people do, and that’s part of why this video was so highly recommended. It’s also completely fine not to like it, I’m just saying this because 95% of comments so far are just talking about how unfunny it is. Also, about the lack of sources. It’s unfortunate how few sources there are in such a comprehensive video like this, but at this point mossbag had already made MANY lore videos, including another complete lore video that this one replaced. Those go much more in depth with specific subjects, and they are much better about citing sources. This video really just serves as a general story recap in case you failed to notice, missed, or misinterpreted certain important lore throughout the game. I do highly recommend watching his other videos if you want more info about certain topics, but if the humor irks you too much, don’t bother.

The video is what it says it is; a (mostly) complete summary of the lore. Any kind of “God-Tier” deep dive with full references would take at least three hours. As he says himself, the best way to get that information is to go to some exhaustive encyclopedia like the wiki, which has full references on every page. • 19:40 Mossbag usually formats his videos in that format. He highlights one subject, presents all the information in the game and extended media addressing that subject, and presents a theory that connects them, before discussing any pros and cons in how his theory connects to the established lore. Along with the Metroid bit at the beginning, the other thing you skipped was a disclaimer that the material in this particular video is his own conclusions about the general story, and not all of the points are universally agreed upon by the HK community, though they are widely accepted by most.

It's unfortunate you don't like his style of humor and delivery but after your explanation at the end of the video I understand where you're coming from. I do agree it's not on the "godly" level of lore video that people probably made it seem. It's likely a more effective video for those who didn't pay as much attention to the lore during their playthrough rather than those who were very attentive and wanted an extra deep-dive into things without fluff. • A lot of the humor is in reference to certain in-jokes and memes from the then budding community of HK lore (Hornet is Void?!?) so it's a bit more "personalized" towards somewhat of an in-group audience. As more people get into HK and approach the community's old silly lore ideas, the more it seems niche and awkward. Mossbag's still fantastic, but he clearly made this for a specific set of hyper-unique souls that have been die-hard since the beginning.

If you want to gain WAY more lore about the game, he has a channel full of videos that go into actual details, pointing out the subjects that are both in this "Mostly complete lore" video and those that are not included in the video (which may interest you a lot more in my opinion).

  • I didn't aware some people *really* mind the humour in Mossbag video until now. While I didn't laugh to most of his joke, I didn't find it annoying or cringe to the point I became upset when watching. The 1st time I've played HK I didn't pay close attention to in-game dialogue because I wanted to experience the combat. So putting off the game to read text that's not relevant to gameplay mechanics will break the flow of the game for me. It's also hard for me to connect every bit of in-game information into a cohesive narrative because you discover everything "out-of-order" basically. In combination of wanting to play, I didn't spend too much effort on connecting the dots. So it's nice for me to have someone organizes those information in case I want to understand what I'm experiencing. I suggest you checking out his other videos in your own time as he will dive deeper into more specific topics like the Grimm, the Shaman, the Godseeker and those vids are generally shorter as well

You should know, while this video is more of a general overview, Mossbag also has a whole bunch more videos going in-depth about specific topics, where he'll actually directly reference the ingame sources he's using to draw his conclusions. I never really thought about it until watching you here, but this video only barely does that, or doesn't actually say when it is (like he'll include a snippet from a lore tablet here or there. but not say it's from there, but the in-depth videos will generally show the full text onscreen and where it is ingame). It sees like his humor isn't really your style, though, so I'd understand not wanting to look into his content any more than this. Even if it wasn't quite what you were hoping for, I'm glad you were able to get something out of it! Ooh, you finally learned the purpose of the rancid eggs! I made pretty much the same mistaken assumption about Jiji's gameplay purpose when I first played, equating "regrets" to missable things in the game. A means of summoning back your shade is far more useful overall, at least for the situations where it would come in handy.

  • Thank you so much for reacting to mossbag's lore video! I agree with a lot of your comments on the video, but despite that I still really appreciate that mossbag put all this lore together, to help perhaps fill in some blanks that most people would have after playing through Hollow Knight the first time, and likely even after multiple playthroughs. It's hard to put everything together yourself as you play, and it can be quite fun having some final pieces of the puzzle, and have other things sort of click as you see it summarized. It was fun seeing you have a few of those moments, and it was also a bit humourous to see you suffer through the jokes. Loved watching this, and I'm glad you're honest about your thoughts and feelings. And I have to ask - would you consider doing a small video after you finish reading the journal, just talking about what you learned from it, how you felt it was presented, and maybe also what questions you might still have after all this?

  • This video is indeed meant as a story and even though it gives some sources, most of it was meant to be watched without having to read, as stated at the beginning of the video. Even so, the informations presented are widely accepted community theories and wiki lore pulled from various in-game text, be it tablets, dialogues, dream nail lines, item descriptions, journal entries. Now as he says a lot of the hollow knight lore is vague and people have interpreted it from these sources to create their theories, so different interpretations lead to different theories. Edit : you may know there is a modding app for hollow knight called scarab that allows you TONS of shit like QOL improvments, randomizers, new content like charms, benches, even skins for your characters, and there are also custom boss fights playable in godhome. And yes, there is a fight called tribe of battle which is just sisters of battle + traitor lord. Enjoy.

  • Honestly, probably the reason why you weren't as excited about this is unless you've read the entire wiki, or played the game multiple times trying different ways to beat the game, or just read literally every journal, lore tablet, and spent time pondering it (which is the path you, mapocolops, took), there were things mentioned in this video that you probably wouldn't have come across, and just filled in the general knowledge of the game. Also, this is like the cliff's notes version of previous videos mossbag's done.

But the humor reaaally didn't land with me, and I just couldn't watch it all the way through because it annoyed me. Bummer, the lore parts were interesting.

  • Mossbag literally said in the video that he recommends going through the lore section of the HK wiki & FanGamer's Wanderer's Journal which you skipped because it was right after he talked about metroidvania & Super Metroid so if you want sources, go tf there. And reminder, the title of the video is called "The *(Mostly)* Complete Lore..." Even mossbag admits that this video is not going to have everything but you skipped that as well. As others have said, mossbag has made other videos about specific HK topics, so you can check those out too if you like. Shouldn't have skipped the entire introduction, and should've just skipped the Metroid part. 29:50 That is not an interpretation of the Hunter. You can see his full form when you visit him right after you complete his journal.

  • i think you'll enjoy mossbag's other lore videos more, because here he has to put a lot of information into a single video, so a lot is left out. I totally agree with you, i wish this video did point to where all of the information comes from, unfortunately that's not the case, but, at least, having all the information now yourself, when playing the game again it will be much easier to see things and go "aaaaaahhhh, so that's where this comes from/ so this is what this thing means"

    @pedrogbs4764@pedrogbs4764 Жыл бұрын
  • What is pretty fun is how much you actually did yourself so you didn't get too much from the recap video. Most people ive seen beat the game rush through a lot of it so you definitely had major dedication to the lore yourself. But anyways the only thing i was disappointed with on your own playthrough was you reloaded to see one critical dialogue thing from hornet, but you didn't reload the part before you beat herrah the beast so you missed the revelation that hornet is her daughter, and the fact she believes you can change the fate of hollow nest that she allows you to kill her. Plus with a video like this the sources come from him doing lore videos for quite a long time, culminated by this one. A lot of the lore in this game is not directly explained so there isn't really a way to give sources on screen in some cases.

  • I believe pale king deemed hollow knight as truly hollow just because they assumed every vessel should be hollow but taken out the only one that skilled or focused enough to escape while others try to escape instinctively. But that capability comes with higher risk of being tainted with idea or mind

  • Yeah for the record, the Land of Storms, and the location which the godseeker is ‘making’ the god tuner, are both rather difficult areas to find. To which one is rarely accessible when ENTERING godhome. It just has a random chance to take you there. Easiest to just enter and exit continuously to see if you enter. The other, the Land of storms, is probably the hardest since you need to beat every pantheon with every binding.

    @BingyMcGingy@BingyMcGingy Жыл бұрын
  • I know there isn't an order in the events of the game BUT my theory is that when you first banished Radiance in the "Dream no more" ending she actually takes shelter in the mind of the Godseeker and its dream, not dying at all. Then, when you defeat her in Godhome, its for real, 'cause The Void is finally with a purpouse and a form, and its unified, acquiring the power needed to defeat such a threat. I'm saying this based on how the essence particules appeared when you defeat her: in the first ending the essense extends like a hand reaching for help, while in the Godhome one it just explode and then fade away. Ofc you can do the Godhome ending first, but gameplay wise it doesen't seem right, if yall know what I mean, so if you see it this way it could make sense.

  • An interesting tidbit about our player character knight possibly being a true, Pure Vessel - you can actually choose to see him as pure, or just as flawed as the Hollow Knight The Hollow Knight shared a moment with the Pale King, and thus had emotions, making him flawed. We're given the option to share a moment with Quirrell, at the Blue Lake. By our own choices we can either retain that the knight is a pure vessel, or just as flawed. Simple and beautiful storytelling, and it all happens with a single button press when you choose to sit down with him.

  • You can actually send the flowers to several NPCs from the grave of the traitor’s daughter (I remember there are Oro, the white lady, and the elder bug available) you can try. There are some details worth savoring, and I found Oro is so cute when receiving the flower. He seems to have done something wrong to Mato and then he imprisoned himself in the Kingdom’s Edge, much far away from the Mato’s room. But heartwarmingly in the heaven they fight together as brothers.❤

  • If you ever decide to go back to the Pantheon of Hallownest, here are a few pieces of advice that massively helped me with completing it: 1) If you lose to a boss AT ANY POINT DURING THE PANTHEON, NO MATTER WHICH BOSS IT IS, go to the Hall of Gods and practice it until you can beat it on Ascended. Bonus points for practicing it on Ascended until you can beat it multiple times in a row on Ascended. 2) If you feel like you need practice on a boss, because it's messing you up for the next boss in the line? See advice 1. 3) My final charm build for the Pantheon of Hallownest was Quick Slash, Shaman Stone, Unbreakable Strength, and Unbreakable Heart. One of the 3-costs can be swapped for Quick Focus if you need, and Carefree Melody would work even better for the 2-cost (I just didn't have it on the save I did the Pantheon on.)

  • yeah it's a good video, probably the best lore video when it comes to general hollow knight lore, but it does tend to get overhyped for sure. the lack of citations and the attempts at humour detract from it. still glad to see your reactions to some of this stuff. of course ideally it would have been better to see you find more of this stuff in game yourself but realistically there are going to be things that you'll just never see over the course of a youtube playthrough, as well as some things you've already missed. it's worth mentioning that this video didn't cover a lot of stuff. as mossbag said, he basically skipped over all the characters and interactions that weren't directly related to the game's central plot. characters like quirrel, cloth and the nailsmith spring to mind. that said there are basically infinite wells of lore in this game (mask maker has videos all to himself iirc) so it's up to you if you actually feel like it's worth pursuing any further.

  • Mossbag isn't my favorite in terms of delivery and humor, but he does a good job at unpacking the lore. You might enjoy some of his other vids a bit more, since they focus more on detailed lore. You did a good job of exploring the lore yourself so many things that could have been revelations for you from the vid, were things you already knew. This vid is like 101 of Hollow Knight lore, it's most rewarding for people who played the game without paying much attention to things. There are other vids that explore more detailed topics that I enjoyed more. Overall, much like FromSoft, it's fun to explore, interpret, and discuss the lore of HK.

Regarding Steel Soul Jinn, in the regular game Confessor Jiji will teleport your shade to you, in exchange for a rancid egg, that is what the "regrets" are, and the only use for rancid eggs, and as dying in steel soul mode is a game over, Jiji is useless, so Jinn replaces her.

  • The issue with Hollow Knight Lore is that we have very little facts. You have to piece things together from names, locations looks and multiple conversations. The lore in this video is what we know for "sure" meaning we have strong evidence for it. The details you were looking for (unfortunately) do not exist. Mossbags other videos are focused on smaller topics, which still contain a lot of speculation but in those he gives you all the evidence you were looking for.
