  • The dog not even being able to take all four of her paws out of the kennel is one of the saddest things I've seen. It's such a sign of anxiety about exploring its environment outside of the cage, and wanting to keep at least one foot in a spot where it knows its safe. Can't imagine what she went through before this.

    @yusakug@yusakug Жыл бұрын
    • My one dog does this it is his safe spot he lays in there when he wants to be left alone and he does not want the other dogs to bother him but I think it also has to do with him being abused as a puppy before we got him from my dad's friends who stole him out the neighbor's yard who was mean to him and beat him and threw him out in the snow it took him about a month before he really felt safe to let me or my dad pet him now he is such a lovable dog Milo is but he is still not a people dog and does not like black people because that is who beat him as a puppy so he freaks out he thinks it is the people who beat him

    • When I was 5, my parents let me pick out a dog. All the other puppies at the shelter were jumping on me and scaring me, but this one timid 1 year old dog from a neglectful home just shyly walked over and sat on my lap. He was my pick, and we named him Tucker. He was so neglected that my mom had to hand feed him and teach him how to walk up and down stairs. We had to teach him how to play. My parents later admitted they first thought he was too timid and wasn't sure about my choice, but he ended up being the best dog in the world once he came out of his shell. Intelligent, playful, well-behaved, extremely empathetic, good-natured to all animals. Whatever cats we adopted over the years fell in love with him. When fights would break out between the cats, or when our friend's dog would chase the cat, he would always break it up and stand his ground. He loved to play Frisbee and had a lot of personality, but he was also calm and very well behaved. Only ever chewed a shoe once, and if he was ever scolded for something, he'd never do it again. He passed a couple years ago at 16 years old. I miss him every day.

    • This is why responsible shelters/rescues will do behavior screening of all pets that come to them and require ALL family members (human and animal although cats can be exempted) meet and interact with the potential adoptee before adoption. If there has been abuse or some kind of personality issue they will do pre-adoption training to make sure all in the family understand what the new family member needs in order to become comfortable. Nobody should adopt without already having some idea of potential challenges ahead.

Most canines are basing everything off of a combination of nature and nurture. Much like a child if left ferrell or agnostic they will develop negative behaviors based off of negative experiences and fear or even selfishness due to percieved necessity and preservation. The percentage of " nasty" dogs would be much less if they weren't looked at like a possession and more as a gift with serious responsibility.

It took a lot of patience, a lot of time and effort and a few trips to Urgent Care with bite wounds but the reward is having a wonderful dog whose life we know we saved. She was destined to be put down when we found her, but not anymore.

She is now the most confident, loving dog. Wags her tail constantly. There is so much joy and she gives just as much if not much more than we give her.
