ABOUT “ON THE ELK TRAIL”
In 2018, former Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit masters student and WMI grad fellow Travis Zaffarano from Cody, Wyoming wrapped up his master’s research on using trail cameras to count and classify migrating elk. It was a big project that involved a lot of fieldwork with Wyoming Game and Fish Department partners in the Cody and Jackson area, and it also resulted in amazing still photos of migrating animals.
Travis’ project made us want to tell this story in video using unobtrusive motion-activated trail cameras. WMI filmmaker and lifelong elk hunter Greg Nickerson teamed up with Travis to pull the video project off, and @RMEFWY put major support behind the effort to make it possible.
It took a lot of help to bring the full spectacle of the fall elk migration to the public. With @WyoGFD biologist Greg Anderson and volunteers Sarah Domek and Nick Dobric, we hit the trail to set up, monitor, and retrieve the cameras. Greg, Travis, and Ben Kraushaar then narrated, produced and edited the series. None of it would have been possible without a lot of folks at UW, including Elizabeth Traver and Andy Parsekian (thanks for the snowmobiles!), Matt Kauffman, Plum Schultz, Kimmie Takaki, Joanna Merson at the University of Oregon InfroGraphics Lab Department of Geography, University of Oregon, and many others.

  • Fascinating! Great video captures and quality. It's a lot of time and effort to not only set tcams and retrieve sd cards, but dealing with the anticipatory expectational highs and lows with so much out of your control with a tcam set. Then the sorting and editing. Really appreciate the time and effort that went into this and thank you for sharing it.

  • Rory-Not Gail: I'll sit down on the couch and have my grandsons snuggle up and we'll watch this instead of a favorite elk hunting video. I want them to learn the science of the animals and the outdoors. Appreciating and understanding conservation is the key. Thanks for your efforts and your great work. RCS

  • No black panthers or cougars? It's so sad. I don't want to give up their freedom for my safety just ad much as I wouldn't give up my own freedom for security. There is a black panther at Lake Sumner in New Mexico. I heard rumors that they were going to try and capture her and move her or else they would have to kill her. It's so sad 😢 I don't think she's ever killed a pet, except for some chickens. Without her around who is going to teach the next generation to leave people's pet's alone? I'm hoping her children are a lot like her!
