Anne Applebaum: The GOP’s Pro-Russia Caucus Lost. Now Ukraine Has to Win | Amanpour and Company

Ukraine is breathing a sigh of relief as the Senate passes its long-awaited aid bill. Speaking to The Guardian, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said “hallelujah” to the news. But he also warned that Russia is out-shelling Ukraine ten to one, and “no single package can stop the Russians.” Author Anne Applebaum is a staff writer at The Atlantic. Her latest piece is called “The GOP’s Pro-Russia Caucus Lost. Now Ukraine Has to Win." She joins Walter Isaacson to discuss the importance of stopping Putin’s aggression.

    • I mean it is a fact that the Russians are producing much more artillery, it is a fact that Ukraine has Nazis in its military leadership (not all not even half. Not even 3/4 but a significant number. To deny it is to give Russian disinformation credibility). It's a fact that some of the money has been stolen through corruption and that Ukraine was notoriously corrupt to begin with. It's a fact that zielinski has shut down voting and therefore it's not a democracy. It's a fact that there's no way a small Ukrainian Army could ever defeat a much larger nuclear-powered in Russia. These facts may be uncomfortable, unpleasant but they are making it facts, not just information. I guess my real question is what does victory look like? No seriously?!?! Is it every last woman man and child in Ukraine dead? Do you really think that Putin would give up? The oligarchy would have him killed if he did that. So it's existential to him so it ain't going to happen. Also, clearly America doesn't give a f*** about human rights either, they just helped slaughter 40,000 Palestinians. This lady is about as dishonest as they come, this show has shown that it is more or less a propaganda arm for the military industrial complex. Disgusting

I think their pitch is "We're one of you, and if you're a one-issue voter, then you must ignore other things we do that you don't like." But their pitch against voting for Democrats is "If there's just one thing you don't like that the Democrats do, then you must not vote for them." And so-called "moderates" believe it or "both parties are the same" or just tune out, and don't stand for or against anything, not even women's rights or January 6th.

While I prefer to have politicians of all stripes around at all times to seed discussions of all ideas, I'm so angry that I will fund Democrats to the exclusion of Republicans. They must pay a painful price for electing Greene and all the rest and allowing Trump to "rule" from Mara Lago (the idea of that is against everything we stand for). Johnson, though he allowed the vote and that's obviously good, is no hero here. Indeed, he's a villain.

  • Abandoning Ukraine is a monumentally short-sighted strategy. The surest path to world domination is through total control of Eurasia, and Russia-China are well on their way. This would lock America and Europe to defensive postures within their respective fortresses for generations. There is a reason Ukraine, the “borderlads” which cut through the Eurasian periphery have been coveted by Nazis and then Soviets in the 20th Century alone. It is the bulk of the remaining fertile land on earth. In our near future, food will have more value than gold or chips. Even while at war, Ukraine is feeding Africa. This is a prize to be won, not by conquest, but through guaranteeing the freedom and self-determination of its people.

This is due to the treacherous investment class lowlifes who spent decades breaking up and selling manufacturing operations for quick corporate raid profits. Another major part of the West's weapons manufacturing problem is the rampant over regulation of industry by arrogant and overzealous bureaucrats with unchecked power to block productive activity with red tape. There is no way to run a factory effectively with short term obsessed investment professionals breathing down one's neck and bureaucrats taking every opportunity to shut down factories over every technicality they can find.

What I can also say, is that despite their generally fewer opportunities, we have already reached the point, in many countries, where many women are observably smarter and wiser than men. This seems to be the next key field in which progress is needed. In other words, the key problem is no longer a lack of female empowerment, _it is an overabundance of male stupidity._

The USA public should know that 80% of this aid goes to the American weapons contractors. But what is truly at stake is the opportunity to make the world a safer and more hospitable place for generations to come. This is the greatest threat to our future since WWII. • I have a lot of respect for Anne Applebaum. She has written some excellent works on central/eastern Europe and I have followed her articles in the Christian Science Monitor, WSJ and elsewhere for years. I currently work with an NGO that has been delivering ambulances, medical supplies and other material to Ukraine since March 2022. Now, all of that said, I think she has taken this a little far to call all of the Republicans who opposed the additional aid package as "pro Russian". I did not agree with their opposition, I think we need to keep supplying Ukraine until they finally stop the Russian invasion, IF they can. I have been near front line towns and in formerly occupied cities, and have seen some horrific scenes. I have been with Ukrainian soldiers before they head to the front. However, we need to learn from our recent past and make sure that we have an end-game plan, an "exit strategy" if you will. Think Iraq, Afghanistan or Vietnam. The US cannot afford a "blank check" and to be drawn into funding something if it lasts 10, 20 years or more. That is not to say that this should be broadcast to the world (and Putin) of course, but the US, the EU and its constituent nations need to decide what will be acceptable short of outright defeat of Russia (which may never happen). I respect that some in our Congress raise legitimate concerns about long-term heavy spending on this war. Our deficit now is beyond the pale.

This means Finland, the Baltic Republics, Eastern Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, all the trans-Caucasus nations, all the ‘stans’ of Central Asia. With specific regard to Ukraine, Putin has said he blames Stalin for its loss to Russia in that It was an integral part of the USSR and post WW2 Stalin split it off (and Belarus as well) as supposedly an ‘independent’ nation. Of course in Stalin’s time this was a de facto sham but Ukraine did gain the trappings of independence such as its own seat in the UN.

    • I think Applebaum said "it's not just about territory." I'm not trying to quibble, I just can't imagine her not knowing that in addition to controlling the cities Putin wants to seize control of Ukraine’s agricultural resources as well.

  • An excellent segment. I have read some of Anne Applebaum 's work since 2016. Please consider interviewing her colleague Dr. Timothy Snyder on Amanpour and Company. Maybe you have already done so. His book "The Road To Unfreedom" is outstanding.

  • I agree with much of what Anne has to say but I don’t think she acknowledges how strong the strain of American and British “fascism-friendliness” existed in the 1920s and 30s within the “conservative” crowd. Leaders of large international business and banking institutions were very supportive of ‘strong-man” regimes in Italy, Spain and Japan and to a slightly lesser extent Germany. These regimes loved borrowing money, using it to purchase expertise, products and commodities and were committed (for a time) to paying off loans with interest and aggressively squashing any socialist or communist uprisings might lead to USSR-style defaulting on loans. In the USA this played out against a backdrop of right wing AND moderate wing isolationism. This history has been significantly downplayed by post-war historians who act like America First was some odd fringe cooked up by Charles Lindbergh and a handful of bundists. Ram Rayburn had to really work his ass off to get Roosevelt’s two Lend Lease allocations passed by Congress…a full 6 months after the Miracle at Dunkirk. His ghost may have paid a visit to Mike Johnson last week to give him a lesson in building a backbone…and counting votes. Interestingly…it was southern “planter” Democrats with their weird self-identifying attachment to “roots” in British aristocracy who were first on board one the Luftwaffe began bombing England in the fall of 1940.

  • We wonder why Trump didn't come out in public against Speaker Mike Johnson for bringing this to a vote? Look at how we label Marjorie Taylor Greene as pro-Russian because of it. That is why Trump didn't say it in public (like he does it in private assiduously) and chastise Mike Johnson for bringing it to a vote.
