Think Like a Lawyer | Adam Lange | TEDxGrinnellCollege
The practice of zeal. How to zealously advocate for your cause. Keep being a zealous advocate; but in the process, don't forget to be an advocate for yourself. Adam '11 graduate of Grinnell and the oldest of three children, all first-generation college students and Grinnell graduates. While attending Grinnell, Adam majored in Political Science and Gender, Women’s, & Sexuality Studies, captained the Mock Trial program, and studied off campus at Grinnell-in-Washington including an internship with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.
Adam presently works for Gitlin, Horn & Van de Kieft LLP where his current work is primarily focused on litigation on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing individuals across New York City. This includes cases of alleged discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, the New York State Human Rights Law, and the New York City Human Rights Law where deaf individuals contend they were denied American Sign Language interpreters or other aids in a number of settings including police services, hospital admissions, and various city and related agencies including homeless shelters. Being a lawyer love this, my utmost devotion is to the best interest of my client. A judge once told me, he has never seen a person fighting his heart out for a stranger like a lawyer do.
First off, lawyers fight for paying clients not strangers, or in the case of personal injury, clients that can award them a large return. Next, lawyers fight by misrepresenting, withholding, lying, exagerating, asking their witnesses to lie and withhold, and by falsely discrediting their opponent. It's much of what a comedian does but with much higher consequences and is much more binding. IMO, the term 'doctor and lawyer' are not synonyms. Doctors take a vow to help. Lawyer set out to hurt.
@@brianmueller7913 geez who hurt you
@@brianmueller7913 I would fight for a stranger but okay
@@user-ib7wy4oq9e A good thing about social media is that a person can claim to be anyone they want to be. Also, to claim that lawyers "fight for strangers" comes from the same tray of BS that they sling in the courtroom...and to their clients.

This is to anyone who plans on studying law -it's easy but attend all classes i kid you not if you miss out one day of class you'll have to catchup on a lot. I am a first year student and it's both easy and hard you just have to stay on top of your work!
Any tips for anyone thinking about law school in general? What are things you wish you knew, And did the experience so far match your expectations? How so A curious student 😄
easy?
@@maple_latte2669 honestly if you love reading, love problem solving, politics you’ll enjoy law so much! My best advice is keep up with your readings, do the assigned work and honestly attend all your classes (and ask questions) also make friends within the degree you’re studying! Im in 3rd yr now and it gets harder but dont give up and remember why you started your journey and why you wanted to study law. Hope this helps and all the best 😊

I can not express enough how important as a client to have a lawyer who is a zealous advocate for you because if they arent you lose thank you for this

Make Law a passion - not a job and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Good luck ! And enjoy !
Practicing law is a highly rewarding profession if you're passionate about helping people. Good luck on your journey!

I'm an attorney and I do credit law school with making me a better thinker. I went to a top 10 undergraduate program but law school definitely honed my critical thinking skills. On the other hand, it stifled my writing ability because lawyers are taught (with strictness) to write in a certain style. It also made me work very slowly and methodically, which results in better work but is not necessarily a good thing for people working in various non-lawyer roles.
How do you explain what is critical thinking to a ten year old?
I like the point that we should be zealous advocates for ourselves-but the title of the talk suggests it will teach the viewer how to think like a lawyer. A few points skipped over quickly and then we went into autobiography where most of the talk remained. I still enjoyed it but came for the promise of the title. This would be where the negative comments are coming from generally I would guess.
Yes I also expected some tricks or some experiences but yes it was a good speech.. though slightly shifted from the topic of the video!
I'm about to start my LLB. Came here to reduce my nervousness. Wish me good luck guys.🙏
I really need to hear these words today. Thank you
12:30 thank you. I needed to hear this, reminded to be an stronger advocate for myself at this very moment. Been fighting for my life first, for 4 years now. The battle is not the war. This legal battle is 1 more battle. I am a zealous advocate for others, even strangers. The time has come to do so for myself. Blessings.
I am in my second year of law school, and finding it very challenging. I came here for inspiration. I have had an eating disorder, been in a psych ward. I don't know if i am strong enough to be a lawyer. How can i make law my passion? I can't compete with others. I can just be myself, whatever in the world that is.
I’m a highschool student and am thinking of going in to Psychology or Law. But am afraid if people won’t treat me as they would treat others. I am A very short Muslim girl with social anxiety. I am interested in law but don’t have the courage be a lawyer. The reason I want to get into law is because Ive been told by many that I am good at arguing and analyzing situations. I am really interested in this profession but I’m afraid if everyone in that profession are good looking confident white people. Are there people like me?
@@laibatahir4627 There is so much power in perseverance. Your courage will grow with confidence in what you are working with. I was a tutor in college and it helped me learn to teach one on one with people, get over my social anxiety, and learn a passion for helping those struggling with problems. Best of luck to you friend.
Good luck! You're braver than me to have begun. Finish strong and follow your dreams!
If you are strong enough to take the LSAT, get into school, and get through your first year, then you are strong enough to graduate! It is hard, but many people do it and so can you. I know because I did it as a square peg too. You SHOULD be yourself.
If law is not your passion just quit. Youre not made to be a lawyer.
excellent and concise talk, thank you!

Yes. Totally agree with you on this one.
He does family law work! I have respect for him cuz it's meaningful but not lucrative.
Its lucrative. Depending on what family issues we practice, and what jurisdiction we practice.
Family law is very lucrative. Especially divorce stuff. Those cases drag on for ages amd you can charge your client insane amounts of money. There will always be divorces and breakups so you will never lack work either.
It was nice listening to him
I actually love ❤️ this guy’s character and truth behind what he is trying to express. Instead of becoming a Police Officer 👮♀️ first I should of applied for Harvard or Oxford Law degree 📜 program. Being a Lawyer you can protect your family, friends and loves ones specially to poor people. You can realized the importance of life because this world is not enough for us.
What's the important thing about life that lawyers know?
Ironically, a lackluster speech about the importance of zeal.
I think it was more like be kind to yourself. He told the story of the family court and noticing the parents not being kind to themselves.that was the backdrop. so I think his tone was right. just my view
I feel like I can relate to his energy

I’d like to be a judge, but no funds. So much education, but no job. I won’t give up hope. Just don’t start yelling at others, lawyers. Stay calm, listen and let down your egos.
This was a great video!
Practice of zeal and thinking like a lawyer are two different things.
why
Zeal can be applied to everything including profession. Thinking like a lawyer does. It necessarily applies to every profession.

You are honest and say: "I'm a lawyer" and then the conversation changes, eyes light up, and they start talking and you say, no longer honest: "I've never been in court, I only do wills and trusts and maybe corporate contracts." "Oh. Sorry. So how about those Patriots" and we're back on track!

What is the minimum standard qualification of being a lawyer?
?How would I go about asking another lawyer of a current situation without affecting my current court situation.?
I am to take the BAR this 2020 if God be willing. But until now, I am still convincing myself that I want to become a lawyer and that it is God's will that I will become a lawyer. Still looking for reasons why should I do this....
How did it turn out for you?
everyone: I want to be a Lawyer! Wish me luck! me: *I'm here because of among us, trying to convince people I'm not the imposter for the 100th time*
HAHAHAHAHAHHA LOL
Excellent information. The one point I would proffer though, at around 8:25 you state that most people end up in family court etc due to some inherent personal issue, drugs, alcohol, poverty etc. A LOT of people end up in family court that have none of those issues. Cough cough, title 4-d, cough cough, alimony, cough cough, she just got bored. LOL
Um a second year law student.its reallyyyyyy awesome being a law student. But tbh sometimes i feel soo annoyed when i go out to the public/ societty .thats because as a law student.. i see so many illegal things than an ordinary person does.....and i just have to keep quiet and stay like thats non of my business since the society accepts those behaviors directly or indirectly even though the law is against them...( ex- smoking in public places is prohibited ..but people smoke) ....
I want to be a lawyer
Good start on zeal, an important niche, and a confident speaker, well done! But then the talk veered off into a different direction...the last third of the talk didn't fit well...

Hello, good morning, what should be done to immigrate to the United States as a refugee?
My phone may be bugged by sick retaliatory gangsters. An error I noticed in the talk was the use of "mental health", when mental illness seemed to be the challenge described. ***I think the above feedback has earned me some legal advice...!*** There seem to be some subtle/overt crimes going on in my neighborhood, and to document some of them, with at least one exception, I've been sending emails to myself. Yesterday I drafted an email and it's still in my drafts box. Please feel free to let me know if I may send it to you/someone for a "courtworthiness" check!😁
