Having been in Search and Rescue for 40 plus years, I recommend a few additional items: 1. Fox 40 whistle 2. A good Signal Mirror (learn how to use and be proficient with it. You don't want to learn how to use during an emergency, you will be screwed) 3. A lighter for fire 4. Strobe light 5. Bright Highway Safety Vest with reflective material You need to help SAR find you!
Always carry a USB backup battery pack for your devices! It's always a must have in the flight bag.
YES! This is a flight bag item for me, I'll include that when I make an updated flight bag video.
helpful if your in-plane charger should die, I guess. Especially if you don't notice right away
Probably also a good idea to make sure it works with your devices, I know my iPad is picky about what cable I use, etc.
I would absolutely love to see an updated flight bag essentials video. I have been picking up items a bit at a time and trying to find a good flight bag to put them in!
I use a bag from Flight Outfitters! I'll produce that video in the near future.
Agree. An updated flight bag vid would be awesome. I also use the Flight Outfitters bag and I found its the perfect size to fit an iPad mini plus the Sentry for adsb-in and a GoPro case.
@@Aviation101 It will be great!. I´ll expecting for that video.
Suggest buying a co2 detector that has an audible alert as the co2 sticker is not a great option. Specially when flying in winter when you are going to use the heater.
Plus 1 on the updated essentials! However maybe with the caveat of solo ops, versus going for instruction (giving or taking), versus going from point A to point B with passenger(s).
Student pilot. I wear contacts. I also carry my eyeglasses in my flight bag. I've blinked and lost a contact lens (not in flight). In fact, I think it's an FAA regulation.
“I’ll usually hold it righhh hee ahhghrahharah”😂
As a student pilot, I never go up without: some sort of portable light, portable battery, a multi-tool (I use Leatherman Skeletool , both phone and iPad with up-to-date FF, and a Sentry Mini. Additionally I carry some sheets of paper in case iPad and phone go down at the same time and I need to take notes. Optional gear: a cable to record ATC/comms, two GoPros I tried to live with a kneeboard but it doesn't work for me, so jus keeping iPad on my lap
An updated Flight bag video would be great. What yoke mount for your I pad are you using? Thanks!
Great info Josh! I have almost all the things on this list every time I fly! Thanks for a few more tips on stuff I never thought about! 😊 I always also bring my most important item my GoPros for my flying & filming in my Cessna N572RJ and battery packs & backups. Also plz make an updated flight bag.
Hi Josh! I am curious where the updated essential flight gear, flight bag, and tools video is on the video production list. Would love to see it sometime in 2024. Additionally, your latest camera angle and mount setup for capturing your flights would be amazing as well. Thanks!
about carrying "backup glasses": aren't you required to do so anyways (for perscripted ones) ? I'm from Germany and here you're definitely required to do so
On my way home from Oshkosh last year, I thought my iPad would no longer charge as I tried two different charging cables. So I diverted and bought a new iPad. Turns out it was the charge cables were bad. I now carry several new cables as spares, but I now have a backup iPad too.
Great to see you again buddy. Got my PPL back in August of 22’.. your content helped me stay motivated to push through after nearly giving up on flying altogether after some setbacks.
I appreciate your support!
I would highly recommend a handheld radio! They are usually limited to line of sight but it helps so much when comms fail, or if you need to hear radio calls on the ground outside of the plane.
Great video! I would love to see an updated flight bag episode. Maybe it’s because we’re about the same age but I always like to see what Dad has been up to and how his flying is coming along!!
I've been carrying a microstream (AAA battery version) for probably near ten years. I can't stand to have a bunch of bulky stuff in my pocket or a belt so it's small size is perfect
I would indeed like to see an updated video for carry on items. I found that original video after getting back into flying after quite some time and purchased everything on that list. (Originally got my ticket in 2001) My CFI recommended watching you and my eyes were opened up to what youtube had to offer in the world of aviation. I wish YT existed 20 some years ago! Would have made my original training so much better! Thank you for what you do!
Awesome! I still carry a handful of those same items, but some key things have changed. I'll produce that one soon!
Good morning from Minnesota! Great episode!
I love the content. I would love a longer video going over the planning of across country trip. Or, a video explaining IFR with your new glass. Thanks!
I would like to see an updated bag video and also a video for items in a bag in which you have limited space (like in a Light Sport or small 2 seater plane). Thanks for keeping me motivated to continue my training.
Great video. The pace is correct. Visuals outstanding. More of this!!!
I don’t leave the ground without my carbon monoxide detector. I use the Sensorcon, but any detector that will ALARM at high CO levels will work. If you fly with one of the color changing spots, do yourself a favor and throw it in the trash, it just might save your life.
An updated flight bag video would be so timely for me. Halfway-ish through my Private Pilot training and starting to build out my gear!
Great video, Josh. When you do the updated flight bag video, it would be interesting to see if some of the items change specifically because you are in a modern all-glass cockpit now vs steam gauges. I just got my medical and am looking at ground schools and flight schools now, I'd love for you to do a video from the CFI standpoint as to what your opinion is on what an ideal student looks like, eg. Do they have the knowledge test complete before starting flying?, Do you prefer them to go through training without Foreflight so that they aren't losing situational awareness by relying on it for position, etc. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the 3 country tour!
I’m not a pilot but I love all forms of aviation. I have a question for you or the commenters… Is it standard practice for the Captain or pilot in control to always sit in the left seat and why? Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers.
Another clearly stated, realistic topic and no off topic side-bar ramblings. Your video structure is very enjoyable. Would like to see a flight bag up date. Cheers.
Thank you for the touch tip... Exactly what I have been looking for to fit my leatherman toolkit.
I would LOVE an updated flight bag video. Love the vids!
I’ve had two radio failures in two rentals and a handheld radio saved us one of the times. Now in my own piper warrior I carry one all the time charged in my flight bag.
On my person every day I carry a Pen, a notepad, a flashlight and a pocket knife (among other things like like my keys and wallet). In my flight bag I have another flash light that also has a red light for night use. Funny story about the notepad, I was at my nephew's soccer game one day and my sister-in-law ran across an old friend and wanted to exchange numbers, but didn't have anything to write with or on. I pulled out my pen and notepad for them to use, and she asked me why I would carry a notepad. I told her for exactly situations like this.
I would love to see an updated video of what you carry in your flight bag! I have purchased many of the items that you mentioned in your previous video on that. I would like to see how your flight bag compares to mine.
Heck yea, updated flight bag vid.! Also a "here's my camera setup when flying" including your DC power to the wings and overhead!!!
Love that multipurpose tool... My brother went flying with a. Arm cast, during refueling, he got some gas in his cast. His picket knife was essential in removal of the cast because his arm started itching beyond control.
I bought the Leatherman Skeletool with the ratchet driver. and keep it in my 182. VERY handy. I also bought the Flying eyes glasses. They're expensive but I sure do like them. I'm ordering a pair of those flashlights.
I never carried one of those folding utility knives before, but I started after this video. Literally two pre flights into having that in my flight bag, I found two loose screws on the spinner. It was literally a two minute fix with that utility knife, having the Phillips head screw driver in it.
I would absolutely like to see an updated flight bag essentials video.
What about some survival equipment for overflying unforgiving terrain? If you’re not considering this then you’re doing yourself a disservice. Water Transceiver (aviation) or sat phone Matches Signal mirror Space blanket Hand saw Paracord Granola bars Small handheld compass. Some bandages. All of this can fit in a small pack. Never leave home without it. If you have engine failure over inhospitable terrain it could be a day before you are rescued. Try and be prepared. By the way, anyone deliberately planning night flight in a single engine aircraft is taking a big chance. Once your engine fails and you start setting up for best glide and descending into the inky darkness you’re pretty much doomed.
YES! My survival kit lives in the plane, I can't quite fit it in my pocket. That warrants an entirely separate video!
Flashlight ordered. I just started my flight training and found myself in need of something better than my phone's flashlight while doing my first preflight. I've learned a lot from you...Keep doing what you do!
Good stuff! I also bring extra pens since I tend to drop them. A usb battery pack and a handheld comm radio.
Great to see you. The flashlight is a good idea even for none pilots.
For quick egress and cutting seatblets, I prefer the Resqme tool. I have it attached to my kneeboard for quick deployment. Fiddling around with a multi-tool, trying to find the serrated knife, seems like it would take more time. And, yes, an updated flight bag video would be awesome.
Josh. Winter flying. How about capturing the joy of winter flying. Shoot now and edit for next fall. I’ve done some ski flying at home in Canada but I’d like to know what it’s like to travel cross country in the US in winter. Can you get preheat? Can you plug in over night? I used to bring a little diy gasoline preheater everywhere on skis but that’s a little uncivilized. How about deicing and hangers? Interesting things to do and see while winter flying.
Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! I will emphasize that these are items that I carry IN MY POCKETS on a DAILY basis, whether I'm flying or not. This wasn't meant to be a list of items that should be in the airplane. That would need to be it's own video!
Hey Josh...great video. One thing that I keep in just about every bag that I own is a small assortment of zip ties. They can come in pretty handy for a lot of different things and the weight penalty is next to nothing.
Spare batteries for the headset (in arms reach) headache tablets actually have a touch in my flight bag and my flying eyes, electronic charts on ipad and i phone as well as paper ones because you never know. better to have and not need it than need it and not have it!! Ps love the channel.
An updated flight bag video would be amazing. I feel like I’m walking the line between being prepared/responsible and totally overdoing it 😬
My EDC is Victorinox Swiss Army knife, extra batteries (AA,AAA, 9V) , Garmin handheld GPS, 2m/70cm handheld (Ham Radio) transceiver, pocket flashlight with conventional batteries.
I always carry a couple lighters, knife, a bottle of whiskey and a gun just in case i get wrecked somewhere.
one thing i have in any plane i fly, is one of those car hammers with the seatbelt cutter for that reason... the main plane i fly is a bushcat which is fabric covered si i always have one in there just in case, i can cut the seat belt and/or fabric and get out.
I love my kneeboard. My CFI says I am the only student she's ever had that used one. I also keep a headlamp in my flight bag. It is an adjustable brightness LED, and also shifts to red or green for night flights. I like having my hands free while I preflight the school's plane early in the morning before any of the instructors show up or flipping through the sectional at night. Green works better if you happened to use a red pencil to mark your course. That way I have my checklist in one hand and the other one is free to do what needs to be done. I use Avare EFB on my Samsung tablet and phone. Luckily the school has upgraded some of their 172's to Stratus 3 which plays with Android.
It would be awesome to see an updated flight bag essentials video
An intro to the G3X or benefits/ drawbacks would be cool. We have one of our training aircraft equipped with the g3x, gfc500 and g750 and it'd be great to send to students.
Hey Josh! loved this video! I also recommend carrying a good pen, the Pilot G-2 pen is one of my favorites
Pilot Precise V-5 RT for me 🤓
TYSM! Ive not been really flying lately so this is really good for staying safe :)
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Let's gooo! Always learn a lot by looking at what people carry in the plane. From survival equipment to just a simple thing like duct tape... I only have a few long multiple leg cross country trips under my belt but I learned something new each time 😃
Awesome!!
I carry some super soft squishy ear plugs for my wife/pax in case the backup batteries die. She hates wearing a headset enroute. Our last trip she reported good results from her noise cancelling AirPods and was jamming to her music on her iPhone.
Can we see a video where you use your handheld radio and different ways to get a clearance . Like calling flight service on the phone or radio, calling ground from the airplane or handheld or calling approach/Clarence. Also can you do a video on international flying for GA like when to call flight service and what paper work needed to fly
Flashlight-✔️ Leatherman-✖️ Foreflight backup^2-✔️ Backup payments-✔️ Safety Glasses-✔️
Nice job Josh as always. I’m getting one of those flashlights right now!
What made you stop using a red/white flashlight? just the form factor of that specific light was worth the trade off? In your old essentials video you made a good point about blowing out your night vision with white light.
Josh you should have mentioned your Apple Watch as I assume you wear it every day… I figure you use it for METARs, an E6B, etc… seems like it’s a great tool considering I’ve seen it on 777 captains, C-17 captains, all the way down to CFIs in a 172.
Would love to see your planning process to pick FBOs and alternates for long trips.
Getting prescription sunglasses for flying
The one thing I always have on me that is not listed here is - a microfiber cloth. Invaluable for keeping glasses, iPad, and avionics clean and clear of smudges/fingerprints.
Very cool, just ordered the flashlight, thanks:-)
Great video Josh! I think the flashlight and Leatherman are great necessities. My addition: A BIC/multipurpose lighter. God forbid you have a forced landing and need to camp overnight, have something that can make it easy to start a fire with. Matches can get wet, and using friction or flint to start a fire is unnecessary and should be saved for competition at the local Boy Scout meeting. I've used the lighter before. Not for a forced landing, but after a rain and then overnight freeze, the lock on my hangar had collected water and frozen! I held the lighter to the lock for a couple of minutes and was able to melt enough ice to get the key in.
I always carry my Leatherman! But I also always carry water, everywhere I go no matter what I'll have a big bottle of water. Also a cheque book, I only use it for flying. I keep it with the airplanes logbook ☺️
Great video, Josh - and an agreeable number of "y'all"s near the end!
I used to be into whitewater kayaking and a much more experienced kayaker told me once “prepare for the swim, not the ride”. I’ve remembered that in every scenario now since then. When flying, especially solo, if it’s not on your body or secured within arms reach during an emergency it’s practically useless.
I have been watching I think for 4 years your most interesting videos and they are my best ones to watch. you were still in college and flying mostly in Texas and a lot with your Dad. Your videos are top quality and your editing topnotch. I was in Texas in November in Rockwall attending my grandsons wedding and after losing the fight left Texas before getting to San Marcos To hope to meet you and N80991 and I wanted to pay you to let me fly left seat. I had a Skyhawk just like yours, a 1966. I am 88 years old and unable to obtain a physical cert. I really admire you and your dad and that Lovely young lady you fly with. I hope they have Skyhawks in heaven . Fly safe!!
Great ideas!! Glad you mentioned these. Most of the time, we don’t realize we need something until we need it…badly
Would live an updated flight bag video. The only one I always make sure of is a pen. I have one on my kneeboard but I have had that one fail and when you are noting next info is not the time to go searching for one. I know some folks use the iPencil but with my headset and the airplane bluetoothed in already that can be too much. And paper doesn't need batteries or fail in heat. Had the earlier MicroStream (AAA only) and it was a great light. Switched to rechargeable before the new one came out.
Not just a handheld, but also the cable to plug my headset in to it. Paper charts (which never need batteries) and an E6-B (ditto).
Handheld Radio is the one item that got me out of trouble.
It's amazing how similar a flight bag is to a range bag. Just about the only thing missing is the firearm.
Stress 1, add 1. First, that's a great list!! I have personally carried a 'flashlight' for 20 years now! I use it every day, and can't imagine being without it! Add extra battery to the list! It turns into a paperweight instantly if the battery fails for any reason! I also carry a 'tactical rescue knife'. My very favorite one is made by 'Bench Made'! It is ~5.5'' in length, it has a carbide stud in one end, that will break any glass!! On one side is a "hook" blade, anything you can get the hook around (seat-belt!!) and pull it will cut! The other side is a lock-open, semi-sheep foot 5 inch blade. Made from very high quality steel it has a thick back that runs down the blade to a half point, the other side is a deeper V that I have honed and stropped to very sharp. It will cut, pry, chisel anything without breaking! The last one I bought was ~$200, worth every penny!! It is something that could save your life, and in that moment, you will be very glad you spent the $200!! JMHO's --gary
I carry $10 in change and a battery caddy with various batteries. The change is for those times you have to hit a snack machine and no one can make change. Batteries are always die when you need them the most.
Can you do a video of a full exterior preflight of the aircraft and what you look for? Thanks!
I would love to see a new flight bad essentials video!
Man, I'm glad you brought up glasses. I've had that happen so many times wearing contacts and getting caught with my pants down essentially because I never thought to bring my glasses as backups. My solution was to just get lasik...
Great video Josh, I put the flashlight and leatherman on my wish list for when I start to fly. Like others have said, I also would like to see an updated flight bag video. On a personal note, I'm looking for a CFI in the DFW area, if you know any, please let me know.
I was a military AF crew member and our Government Issue flashlight had a red lens so we could use our flashlight in the cockpit at night so we wouldn’t blind/deter my or other crew members night vision. I remember using those red lens several times. Don’t know if a red snap on lens is available for those lights or carry a second light with red lens on it.
Great advice, I also carry a personal GPS locator (in my case a Garmin InReach). Hope I never have to use it but better to have it if I need it.
I use an inReach too! It pretty much stays in my flight bag except for charging.
I have 3 flashlights in my bag. One thing I’ve learned is that rechargeable lights are great, but batteries are easier to replace rather than trying to recharge if it happens to be low or God forbid, dead. Also carry a spare battery for ipad, phone recharging just in case. Ive almost opted to also carry a small handheld spotlight for night taxiing because we all know taxi lights on most small airplanes s&ck. 😁
I have the Leatherman Wingman tool and love it! Also, what are your thoughts on a "cost of ownership" video? Like how much you spend on maintenance, fuel, insurance, unforseens etc? Curious how much it costs to own a plane.
I always carry a PLB in my pocket, Garmin InReach Mini. You never know if you will have cell service or not, or whether your phone will survive the crash…. Putting it in your pocket ensures it will be with you.
I started carrying a flashlight everyday almost a year ago and you're right.... I use that thing more than anything else. I use it EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Same 🤙🏼 so handy
Great start but yes, please consider an update to the bigger list! Also more… just more. 😊 Love your XC content AND instruction.
I ferried a plane just after Christmas and airlined home. I had my nice Leatherman with me and since I didn't check a bag they took it at TSA. 🤦♀️ SO lesson learned, I'm packing a compact duffle next time to check things like that home so I can still bring emergency tools with on ferry trips without getting them confiscated.
I have a grandson that is thinking about getting into aviation, he is a junior in high school and think about going to a two or four year aviation school here in Arkansas. I enjoy your flying channel and you need to show more with Chelsea.
@DM ON TE-LE-GRAM Vai👉Aviation_101 Thanks , what have I won?
I would carry Chelsea with me everyday!
I DO carry Chels with me every day! 😂
I liked that flashlight enough to buy it. I am phobic about getting trapped by a seatbelt. I wear them. I know they work. But I know they jam too. So, I carry a knife called a Hawk Feather around my neck. Walter Sorrels (YT knifemaker) makes and sells them. I already use the same wallet. I went to Amazon to look at it and Amazon said i already own it :) I thought it looked familiar. Back in Covid times I carried quite a bit more cash than I do now. Someone broke into my truck (downtown Houston parking garage) and took that so I significantly lowered my cash carry amount to around 100-200. Extra glasses... usually a pair in each pocket lol
Always carry TWO PENS just in case one falls below the seat and it’s trapped and in worst case your iPad is low on battery so scratchpad isn’t of any use. Learnt this the hard way a few years ago.
Definetly backup batteries for noise cancelling headsets for sure!
I'm saving this video to my personal Airplanes video list RIGHT NOW.
"Happy happy Birthday Young Man!"
Thank you!
Do you start every trip with full fuel tanks to make it easy on the math of how much flying time you have each time you start up the plane? What about when ATC gives hold instructions for emergencies or maybe missed ILS approaches. Is it economical to do it this way or do you end up wasting more fuel by carrying more weight around? How do you decide when there is enough fuel for a trip?
I need reading glasses so I have several pair with me. They are prescription progressive readers and I have found they cause me to mess up my landings so on final I was having to snatch them off. Not a good fix. Solution has been Flying Eyes Kestrel frames with reader lens. I often wonder with all the pilots wearing glasses, do any also find the prescription causes you to misjudge your altitude when landing?
My EDC light is a custom light that takes AA lithium, NiMH or alkaline batteries. Triple A batteries don't have capacity, so they're going to require frequent recharges. I'd suggest carrying the compact flashlight as well as a larger light that has run time as well as 800 plus lumen's. Stay with a name brand light. If you're going to carry a multi-tool, there is no comparison between Leatherman and Gerber. One thing to keep in mind is that TSA will confiscate the multi-tool from you in a heart beat. Having the tool in a pouch usually means it's going into your flight bag. I've got a Remove before Flight tag hanging off my Gerber tool pouch. Glasses are a must with contact lenses. Also, if you take any prescription medications, carry a two day supply, as well as a written script that can be filled in an emergency. I noticed you removed the hand held VHF radio. Any reason?
Good suggestions I really like the flashlight
I don't know if you are a candidate but have you looked into Lasik? I did that 20 ish years ago and loved it. I do now, last 2 years, had to wear cheaters to read small print but well worth it. BTW love the content keep up the good work. As far as what I keep in my tote for travel, its a small wrench set, flat and Philips screwdrivers, pumice hand wipes, blue towels, and a couple rags, and some ratchet straps, you never know when you hit an small airport that the tie downs are rotten, all used, or none available.
I always carry a spare pair of undies in case I get a phone number to call.
