Here comes the new boss, same as the old boss. Just better handling and more powerful. G63s have always been imperfect road cars so I hope the new model improves things.
Yes, 1% more aero and subtle skin tweaks but otherwise focusing on more power, better economy (mild hybrids all round) and handling for the above. Just wish the base model was more.... Base.

Last year of the 13,768 Gwagens sold 60% were AMG, the high spec or one offs make up the others , they sold 11 G400 and none of them were "base" spec. I don't know how to put it in a way you understand as I feel you hate the people who buy them because of a class thing, sexism or cultural disdain? Not everyone is looking at the world the same way you are.

It's not a Land Cruiser but that's OK, the G500 is OK, I want the inline-6 diesel

Life proper sucks for me right now Jonny, but knowing you could muster a smile through gritted teeth about an illuminated AMG badge that didn't really work after the devastating & cruel tendrils of reality clawed into your psyche and stole from you your blissful life with a 944 has inspired me. I guess I can keep going. Thanks for all your videos for real though Jonny & your popular automotive podcast.

I am so with you in how a G should be like - That sand beige one at 18:00 that looks ready for an expedition through the Gobi desert is so much more interesting than the show-offy Beverly Hills ones that will never see anything beyond tarmac roads...

3 fins in bumper - yep, that's pretty much how my parents tell the difference between my Forester and other Forester models. Mercedes clearly took the idea from Subaru.
I’m with you Jonny. I saw a person at Costco here in America loading groceries into his new AMG G-Wagon a couple weeks ago. It was a nice color and I commented to him that one I noticed it was the new model and two about the cool color he picked. He was elated someone noticed. Wonder if he noticed me getting into my old R129 that was muddier than his truck will ever see😂
Jonny, great review of the new G-wagon ,I live in the centre of Canada where we get winters to the extremes -30 plus windchill can be added to that most says, making it feel like -55, no fun ,there was I believe a G300 diesel running around our city for about 8 yrs and it wasn't too posh, it was white with a blue interior and what looked like 15 or 16" steel wheels on it and i had a chance to run into the owner at a grocery store parking lot, we talked for what felt like an hour , he loved this behemoth he called it, no issues or breakdowns, regular maintenance and wear and tear items, he said it just works, we had a seriously bad winter the year previous the worst in over 100 years,, and was snowfall accumulation and cold temps, he told me he puts on a set of Nokia winter tires that were 32' tall and the blizzard that winter he was out driving around getting people unstuck and pushing through snow as deep as the front hood at times, he said there is no economy on his diesel, its built like a tank the same as the Volvo 240 i was driving, i laughed, he got the best mileage was around 250 miles to one tank of diesel, his wife bought a new Honda CRV and they were both parked in the driveway next to their house and a bad hail storm hit shortly after she bought it, talk about strong, not a dent anywhere in the G-wagon and the CRV over $10,000 in damage, new vehicles are made out of soda pop cans, not the G-wagon, it was neat to talk to him and he loved that thing, I am with you if there was ever a time i could afford one, give me a base model, it would probably have more options than i have ever had for sure, it would be the last vehicle i would own for sure, I have a cousin that is a diesel specialist for Mercedes so would not need the dealer except for parts 👍

You've been in Graz and stayed at the Aiola Hotel? I thought that the presentation of the facelifted G-Class was going on. I passed the hotel every day on my way to work and saw the G-Class press-shutles...

My aunty had the original G-wagon in the early 90's. She was a farmer and it was my first and only time in the G.

I went to the West Yorkshire 1979 G launch in Rishworth as a 7 year old where I got driven round a muddy quarry, still have the toy car I was given. 11 years later I was driving a 230GE most days as my parents had one- drove it like I stole it 😂

Hi Jonny. My friend's Dad had two 2.8 petrol shorty 2 door G Wagens. One beige with matching beige plaid interior, steel wheels and no arches. One red with the 5 spoke alloys, wide black arches, dark grey plaid interior and front/rear light stone guards. The red one was bought for £150 (this was 15 years ago) which gave up it's wheels, arches and stone guards. The beige one cost £500 with a full mot one year before that. It eventually failed the mot after 6 years Sterling service. Both were sold as a pair for £500. 18mpg regardless of being unloaded, or with a 2 ton trailer from Aberdeen to the west coast of Scotland! Cheers. Leigh.

one of the most iconic cars ever made and my personal favorit dream car, but i prefere the diesel with the off road version. The beige colour outside was the G350 orifessional 2017 was amazing

its all well and good making a car so off road capable, but seems entirely redundant when the most challenging thing most of these will have to do is mount the curb outside waitrose. part of me likes really likes them, and part of me also really wants them to all get in the sea. a cracking video, even with the 944 cargo cloud shadowing everything.
I'm presuming then Johnny, if you want the "basic" spec, steel wheel, matt Green spec, you'd save a lot of money and buy a grenadier 🤔 the blue G500 would be just lovely though, if you'd be so good as to bring it home with you😂

Eye-watering, yes, but residuals are hard as granite. Also they don't go wrong. Range Rover on the other hand...
I'd love to work as a designer for Mercedes-Benz, especially their G-Wagon. "Look, we've added 3 fins in the front bumper!". G-Wagon's haven't changed on the outside in years. All they've really done was upgrade the interior & added more colours. Even Mercedes-Benz themselves are having a hard time trying to hard sell these to journos!

Was in Morocco recently watching a G Wagen trying to climb the largest sand dune in the country. It didn´t make it and, where it bogged down in the sand, on a precarious section, at a ridiculous angle, there were a few hairy moments! It took about an hour to get the thing out of danger and onto some slightly better inclinations. Suffice to say, they didn´t try again!
I've always liked these, but more like an old normally aspirated 5 pot diesel 3 door or something. I would feel quite comfortable taking it off road.

I'm totally with you on the base models being way cooler the AMG spec models. Just a much more classy thing without all the flashy guff slapped all over it.

The off-road capability and big engines on these is quite impressive really, be super useful on the school drop-off, music video backdrop and urban driving. Honestly they should just do a budget 2WD version with a small diesel with a noisy exhaust and cut costs drastically whilst achieving the same thing.

You can 'Pimp my Wagen' as much as you want 😅 ..I used to love my Ford Fusion. Was a useful utility vehicle for leisure activities , very versatile in the way the seats would fold down so flat it transitioned into a small van. Wouldn't have one now mind ...

Our 2014 Suzuki Swift Sport also has key-less entry. Push the button just like that. Except it works first time. The rear hatch also has a separate button cunningly hidden next to the open button. Looks like Mercedes have waited, and waited, and finally pounced on this tech, and found a way to make it 1000% (just an estimate...it might only be 6 or 700 %) more expensive.And it still has the spare on the back door. Innovative.
One of the very few Mercedes I would own. You need to keep your thumbs out of the wheel while off road Johnny though. Any kickback through the wheel and your chancing broken thumbs

I just configured one of these on the Mercedes UK website. I opted for white, but had to have obligatory black mirrors. The mirrors cost as follows (copied from the website.) Exterior mirror housings in matt black £1,199,999 MANUFAKTUR opalite white magno £0 total cost of car for this little extra is now £2.5 million. Surely the most expensive 'extra' in history. I'll have 2 please.
Maybe it's different in other counties but I've never seen a g wagon in the wild per se. I've only ever seen one with half a dozen scantily clad women tweaking over it in some no name rap video 🤔. I knew they were expensive but I always thought range rover expensive, didn't realise they were hand built also, very informative video Johnny.
