  • My personal suggestion for the build would be to turn it into a nether biome _but also_ change the monument's blocks to be either nether brick or blackstone so it looks like a nether structure. I reckon that could look pretty wild if you're up for the challenge! Good stuff like always tho 👏🏻👏🏻

  • If you want to try this again (and you don't), when the underwater temples were first introduced, and sponges didn't exist, my brother and I did this for one that had an active big Guardian in the center, using leaf blocks grabbed from trees with sheers, to eradicate water while being cursed with teh anti-digging effect from teh big guy. It was about a month of hard, HARD labor, but it worked.

    • @@erinhaleen6092 When you place a block, like a leaf block, it takes the space of water. So, you can make a stack of them, cutting off water flow, then dig into them to make a dry "hut" inside. Similarly, if you're drowning, you can put down a door, open it, and the open door creates a gap of air that you can breathe in, giving you an effectively unlimited diving time, as long as you have a stack of doors to carry around with you. There are some OLD tricks in this game.

  • As someone who is actually draining an ocean at the moment, i've barely made it to 1/4th of the ocean needed to be drained and it's not even for an ocean monument, just draining for the fun of it. This video really showed me all the same struggles i went am going through while draining. I have developed some methods, like making the gap between walls a 5 block gap, and using a block bridge to place a sponge every 3 blocks (bridging continuously) and then breaking it afterwards is easier. Hope this helps!

Basically the ocean monument was created by ancient builders, the sea levels started rising and they tried to use sponges to drain the water, but it failed. So they tried find the heart of sea to breath underwater but they failed again. So they drowned, turning them into guardians.

  • I would have started from the center and expanded in an increasingly large funnel shape, that way I always had a way to climb up to collect the outer sponges. The deepest part would be in the center spiraling outward from the top down, thus allowing water absorbed from the top to stay gone, as well as water near the center where the flow can't reach. You could theoretically create a sort of whirlpool shape that way too, which would be really cool.

  • 8 months after I saw this video, I finally decided I am draining my own ocean monument in survival, and I have found a pretty effective way for doing it with sponges. I will explain just in case someone wants to do it so you don't waste much time and materials. Divide the circle or whatever shape you chose (I am doing an exagon to divide it in 3 parts for the 3 Minecraft dimensions) in sections like this: Line of sand - 7 lines of water - line of sand Then go to the center line of the section and place temporary blocks (any block that hasn't got gravity) every 3 blocks of the centre line. Then, in each column, remove 1 of every 2 blocks: that's where the sponges will go. This way, they don't let a single water source block and you can easiliy remove them with a hoe to reuse them. Also, you can remove the temporary blocks as you go down draining 2 capes of water with every row of sponges or you can let them there and wait till the end to remove them more easiliy without elytra. Just go to the top of a column and mine down. Also, it is much faster to build up from the bottom of the ocean direclty with the glass to make the outline that just dropping sand from the top and then replacing it. Now, how much time and materials do you need? It took me an hour and a bit to make the glass outline (my hexagon is 65 blocks out from the center, so it would be like 7 or 8 blocks more if you want to make a circle as big as my hexagon (you can make it the size you want, but I would suggest trying in a creative world before you are sure what size you want it to be) and I spent more or less 4 shulkers full of glass, wich is around 108 stacks of glass, or 2 double chests. I then sectioned the monument putting a row of sand every 8 blocks, as I explained earlier, and also setting up the temporary blocks for the sponges, and it took me around 15 minutes to do the setup for each section (6+ hours in total), then I started placing the sponges, which took about 30 minutes each section, because I was also removing the temporary blocks as I went down, and I also had to make a few trips to the nether when I ran out of sponges. This was the most tedious part for me, but if you end up making it look nice, then I definitely think it's worth the effort. Thank you if you read this to the end and good luck:)

  • I Love the dedication to such a intense task. Quick tip: If you or anyone ever want to drain out the ocean like this in the future then I would just outline the circle with sand, like you did, then just make dirt beams going across instead of making a whole new sand wall on the inside of the circle. In the nether making sections with sand is sensible, in water it's unnecessary. Beam across, place a sponge on the side of the beam. I hope this save everyone a little time.

Rather than sponging up rows I remember sectioning it like a grid a row at a time to simplify for the water absorption. lastly I think instead of sand as the perimeter, maybe you should've started with the glass, would've save a pretty large step.

  • So here's an addition (or technically a subtraction ;) ) that looks quite cool (a bit of work with sand border, except with glass border it might be bit more work). Also not sure if it works with a circle border. Can confirm this worked with a square border. The goal is to have a water only border (no sand or glass, etc). The only difference now is that since you got rid of the sand already you're gonna have to break each glass block manually. However all you need to do is to dig a 1-block wide (as deep as you want) ditch in the inside of your border. Then get rid of your border from the top down. As mentioned with a square you only have 4 corners to figure out, however it might be a mission with so many corners due to the big circle.

  • I am just doing the same thing at the moment. I am a bit more than half way done with the outside. I've installed a conduit, which is quite useful for breathing and nightvision. I also made a netherportal there and am working with just 35 sponges, which I dry in the nether. I build 5x10 sections and drain those. I first built a 100 blocks diameter glass wall around the monument and then used about 20 stacks of sand to build the compartments. I worked at it for about 5 days, 6 hours each day. The guardians are quite annoying and shoot me off the walls quite regularly. Not much a problem with feather fall III, but annoying and time consuming to climb up again. Sometimes I end up in a crossfire from 4 or 5 guardians at the same time. The loads of kelp, I get, is good to be sold to my butcher after drying it in the oven. That makes a pretty penny.
