At CarGurus UK, we commissioned a survey of 1,000 UK drivers, all of whom had passed their driving test within the past three years, and asked exactly what they wanted from their inaugural vehicle. Our experts then crunched this data and combined it with our knowledge of the car market to see what model most closely matched the requirements identified in the survey.

I had an Aygo hybrid rental for a few days in London, it was brilliant, felt like a go kart! Finding parking was so easy
Bought a low milage 2021 Kia Proceed. Love it.
We have an Aygo as a second car, actually it's my wifes. The first time I drove it in 2018 I managed to stall it, I've driven all sorts of vehicles BTW. The clutch bite is , in my opinion, to high and the throttle is to light. Consequently it's far to easy to over rev the little blighter. It's nicely screwed together and to get any sort of power it's necessary to rev the engine. I also think the gearing is to tall.
Yaris is exactly the same for the manual transmission versions how it ever got signed off is beyond me, Terrible throttle and clutch interaction.
Cheaper to run would be hyundai i10, kia picanto, need a little more space go for the Suzuki ignis.
Did you miss the survey where they had to choose from one of the popular brands from the survey? I mean the survey respondents were a bit weird listing Mercedes, Audi and BMW so I guess it was this or a Ford Fiesta.

@jazzyb8886 I paid £1200 for one 2 year's ago I've spent £459 on it. A friend just brought one for £1400. It's fun reliable everything a Yaris isn't.

Here in Canada, small cars are almost gone 😢😢😢😢😢😢. Small cars are a perfect fit for me and the automotive industry is not considering me as a client anymore. I'll keep my 2022 Chevrolet Spark 1LT for a long time or I'll have to buy a car on the used market next time !
It's going the same way in the UK but there are still some options available
you have options at least for a few years, us here it is game over and our gas has hit 1.869$/l !!!!
Horrible little things. Stiff suspension makes you feel like you're driving without tyres. I'd be going for a Hyundai i10. Much more comfortable and feels like luxury compared to the Aygo.

Yes, the reviewer was not very helpful the way he casually dismissed how the car drives and it's ride/handling! Sure, for a small urban run about dynamic handling might not be that important, but ride comfort is important, at least to most people.
The best first car is a good used car.
If 57% of new drivers want an automatic, what on earth is stopping them from a second hand EV? What on earth is stopping Toyota from offering a hybrid in the laughably cynical Aygo X? What on earth was stopping Audi from mass producing Rotary range extended etron A1s a decade ago?
Young kids travel all over the place for uni and concerts etc. They also don't come home at night. An EV would be a bad choice. A little Asian car is the right choice.
How can you recommend a petrol car in 2024? I just bought a second hand EV for £3.4K. The car is in good condition, passed its MOT and in the 5 months I've had it all I had to do is charge it. I found the car in Ebay -of all places.
EVs are not for everyone yet, still you got a bargain there 👍
They still sell petrol cars and petrol hybrids . EVs are ridiculously expensive, plus can't hack some journeys. I couldn't trust an EV just yet
And how much do you think that would be insurance wise for a just passed 18 year old??
Because some people don't have the time to search for charging points and then hang around for hours whilst it charges. EVs are OK for the shopping run but not long journeys. I won't mention their habit of spontaneously combusting, opssss sorry I just did!
Because petrol are just better. EVs will never become the norm
