In 1863, the English Football Association drafted the rules of the sport we all know and love. Things haven’t stayed the same since then, though. Here are five footballers responsible for rule changes in football.

Footballers Who FORCED Rule Changes
Antonio Rattin was sent off during the 1966 WC quarterfinals due to a misunderstanding with a German ref. Hence, the invention of yellow and red cards
Was about to comment this one. Thanks
Had no idea.
Bonus: Diego Forlan People receive yellow card for taking their shirt off because in a match Forlan played in, he took off his shirt to celebrate but failed to put it back on before the match continues.
Yeah I remember that. Everyone used to do it and no one minded.
Before that players uses to have written word under the shirt.. some of it being a propaganda or political message..
Climbing in the fence or interacting with the crowd can get you a double yellow this way. It has happened several times already.
I didn't know that. I had assumed it happened because Brandi Chastain ripped her shirt off after scoring the winning goal in a Women's World Cup final.
I didn't know Forlan was the reason behind it, the rule change happened 2 years after he did the shirtless celebration. It's a shite rule. I understand if a player fails to get his shirt back on in time for the re-start, but other than that, it's another rule that doesn't harm anyone and should be abolished.
Bonus: Gary Medel In the round of 16 of the FIFA world cup of 2014, between Chile and Brazil, Medel got injured, but Chile had already used their 3 changes. Medel went on to play the hole 120 minutes. After that FIFA changed the rules to allow an extra change in added 30 mins. That produced a series of changes in the rules. Edit: Medel played so injured, he had bandages all over his thigh. Chile lost in the penalties, but Medel's sacrifice for his country was a very moving thing.
Still the goat captain for Bologna
This is just wrong lol. He did play while injured but he went off in the 108th minute, Chile still had a sub.
whole
the pitbull was such a warrior
@@sprintkillshalo8455 Yeah, and he was a thug too. He kicked Messi in the stomach. You know you can kill someone by hitting or kicking them in the stomach too hard? That was how Houdini died. He thought he had exercised his stomach muscles to iron, and asked a boxer to hit him in the stomach. He did and Houdini died.
The Jimmy Thorpe incident is really sad.
I totally agree that his story was sad and next time I hear a striker belly ache about keeper being over protected I will show them keepers have the most dangerous job on ground and why rules were changed.
McCracken was actually so good that they had to change it. So cool!!
No
Ik and it’s Newcastle
Id say hes cracked
The backpass rule changed football so much for the better. As backpasses were no longer safe the whole concept of press, counterpress and generally attack minded play were much emphasised, resulting in more enjoyable game. Nothing stops parking the bus I think though.
I do think allowing parking the bus is important, upsets are one of the great things in football, and if the minnow can't defend deep, then you are just going to be giving one more advantage to the giants.
A lot of the changes have been about finding the balance between allowing teams the freedom to choose a strategy that suits them, and preventing strategies which are seen as too negative or defensive from becoming OP. In 1980s the backpass meta had started to take over and so the developers, I mean authorities decided to nerf in for the next point release.
Total clickbait Messi is in the thumbnail but not the video.
Yeah...it's a good video but it's totally clickbait
The backpass rule had nothing to do with the 1992 EC and Denmark (or Grobelaar, for that matter), but was made as a reaction to the 1990 WC. The rule was already accepted before the 1992 EC and was used briefly after in the 1992 Olympics.
How did the forwards feel knowing they killed a man for a goal in a ball game?
Pretty fine I would assume. The job has its risks.
@@Mitroiul bruh no, don't act cold blooded
Do you mean all forwards or those who kicked the guy?
@@PROPAROXITONO probably those who kicked the guy
Bonus: Michael Ballack During the 2002 World Cup, Michael Ballack had picked up a yellow card during the semi-finals. However since he had picked up a previous one, that meant that he would not be available to play for the finals. Germany had won, but Ballack was suspended due to the yellow. FIFA had to revise the yellow card amnesty rule by allowing any of the best players to be available for the finals.
FIFA revised the rule because of German pressure. Bit like lampard's goal was disallowed because of German pressure. Two two would have changed the game - changed England's mentality .
@@andyventures6574 still coping after 12 years
@@rodi8266 My view.... Sh1t happens. Teams do influence refs at all levels . Just stating a fact (that one was so blatant though. ).
Brazil was unbeatable at the time. Ballack or no the result would have been the same.
@@andyventures6574 Where were the extra goal-line referees that they had introduced?!
Bonus: Vlachodimos (Benfica). After FIFA allow players to be inside the box in a goal kick, Vlachodimos passed the ball to his CB's head, which returned the ball to his hands, making it easier for Vlachodimos to throw the ball. They disallowed that play right after that.
Thorpe's death was so avoidable and sad as it was common knowledge already that if you kick a human being's head, that causes injury. WTF!! Someone had to die to change the rule? we humans can truly be so stupid.
It wasn't until 10 or so years ago that players who suffered from concussion could no longer be allowed to play (even if they wanted to) and only 1-2 seasons ago they brought a free concussion sub. Nothing was done for the Loris Karius concussion in the 2018 CL final and they only found out few days later. Head injury is still taken as a joke.
@@Banzybanz Very true and its only know we are beginning to take mental health serious. Imagine the talent we have missed out on like Bojan💔
5:41 The messi clickbait
It's call a fan
Good try, but that's not even Messi... definitely Busquets.
Good eye
In 2019 Oxford United scored a last minute counter attack winning goal against Bradford City after a goal kick, whereby an opposition player was still inside the box during the goal kick. There was mass confusion afterwards but the referee decided to gift the goal. Afterwards it was added to the rules that a goal kick can be taken quickly if an opposition player is inside the box to prevent the issue occuring again.
Just playing the advantage rule really.
the NASL was actually the first to use the back pass rule. they actually used a lot of rules that are now used by FIFA despite FIFA complaining about the those rules back then.
What other ones?
@@I_Have_The_Most_Japanese_Music the one where the goalie waste time. where they have to play the ball or they get yellow carded. that was NASL. the specific numbers assigned to players along with their last names on the jersey was NASL as well. back then the starting eleven would wear numbers one through eleven. if the line up changed the starting 11 players would still wear the numbers 1 to 11 but the players would be different. like if one game neymar was number 10 then the next game he plays on along the flank and would then be number 7 or something.
Walter Frosch: He got 19 yellow cards in the 76/77 Bundesliga season which is why the DFB implemented the rule of players being suspended for one game after a specific number of yellow cards (4 back then, now 5). At least he is why we have that rule in Germany, it may not be the international origin
How could different leagues have different rules?
@@I_Have_The_Most_Japanese_Music Most leagues have different sets of rules. Each dictated by their own association. I think Germany for instance have to have a quota of German players in their match day squad, that’s not the same in England
@@scottwalker4619 for England, you have to have a certain amount of English players in your squad
@@alexday5618 Not quite true. You have to have at least 8 “home grown” players. This just means that they have to have lived in England for three years prior to the age of 21 and have came through your youth academy. So you could sign a 16 year old Brazilian, throw them in your youth academy and after 3 years they classify as “home grown”
@@scottwalker4619 This hasn't been in the case in like 2 decades because it's actually against EU law as it discriminates other EU-citizens if you remember what that is. There used be a maximum of non-EU players you could have in your team, but I don't know if that's still the case, at least I haven't heard anything about it since I was a kid.
When it needed to be 3 players (presumably including the keeper) for offside, did that mean the sweeper stayed back with the keeper and everyone else push up to the halfway line?
Bonus: jorge campos was a mexican goalkeeper, during the 86 world cup he also played as striker (he would switch the jersey and change positions during a game). Therefore the rule players can only play in one position.
So what's wrong with playing both as a goalie and a field player? It makes the game more interesting.
Thinking this is particularly for Goalkeepers. A Centre Back can advance and score goals
When you come back to this video in 5 years and Mbappe still plays for PSG.
Poor old bosmann, he made the rule change and turned players into millionaires over night, the only person who didn't benefit from this change, that's right, bosmann.
his name lives on
bossman now live easy life.. i forget who, but some players raise fund and charity for him and his family... and he got quite generous amount from top.player that "thanks" him
@@ZhuGeLiang6969 yeah I also remember hearing something along those lines.
How didn't he benefit? He got out of the club and got a better salary in a club that he wanted to play on. Just because others benefited more doesn't mean he didn't benefit as well.
Somebody explain this change to me; clubs still pay transfer fees, right?

Luiz Suarez :)= was the main reason why "biting" is now listed as a foul.
serial offender, as well as the racist shit
For the "Part 2," and there better be a "Part 2," you need ot include Leigh Roose, whose playing style caused the FA change the rules to limit where keepers could use their hands.
How about Nedved, when he missed the UCL final against Milan? The rule changed after that
Bonus: Michael Ballack During the 2002 World Cup, Michael Ballack had picked up a yellow card during the semi-finals. However since he had picked up a previous one, that meant that he would not be available to play for the finals. Germany had won, but Ballack was suspended due to the yellow. FIFA had to revise the yellow card amnesty rule by allowing any of the best players to be available for the finals.
Paul Scholes and Roy Keane missed the 99 final against Bayern and didn't even get winners medals!
Soo why does this video have a Leo Messi thumbnail again ?
The image before you play the video is the definition of clickbait. Maybe that could force a rule change in the video world.
Now all these ppl are true goats 👀👍 anyone can score a goal BUT to change the game.... Now that's RESPECT 👏👏👏

It's still amazes me that bosman actually won cause if he didn't they would be so many players who would have never gotten the fame for being good example is Neymar Jr cause we only knew how good he actually is at barca cause sure we would have heard rumors of a wonder kid at dos Santos fc but we would forget about him like all Wonder kids who don't move to Europe
That is factually wrong, people used to be sold and bought all the time before that rule but it was entirely in the hands of the clubs o make the decision, and once a player's pass was bought he could only negotiate his salary with the new club that owned their pass. So players like Maradona, Zico, Falcao, Careca amongst others were already playing in Europe before the Bosman ruling, but clubs had to make really enticing offers to have them accepted by other clubs.
@@henriquesoares2343 yeah but a good player could not threaten his club by not signing a contract with he's club and waiting to it nearly finished for a better contract if he wanted a better salary to support he's family a bit better .cause back then they were being payed peanuts compared to today this would be impossible because he's current club would not sell him by putting unreal high prices for club that want to sign and force him to accept there conditions unless he doesn't want to play football anymore
@@ZDXP84 yes, but clubs still needed money to operate as a functioning body, so if the transfer offer from Barcelona was high enough, Santos would still sell him regardless and he could have had the same career trajectory that he had.
@@henriquesoares2343 yeah bro do you know how many disputes happen when trying to sign a player that still on contract in another club which it basically was even though the players contract had come to an end cause they is a lot cause if it was that easy just too offer a high price for the player than so many clubs would not fail and that there are still clubs who try to sell a player for what he is clearly not worth
@@ZDXP84 Completely off topic but... maybe you should consider using punctuation when you write. Would make your messages a lot easier to read :P
VAR in combination with offside ruined the game. Even if it can’t be seen by eye they draw those stupid lines and even one millimeter offside gets a goal disallowed. Margins that tight are impossible to get right, if they freeze the image a tenth of a second later or earlier the player may not be offside. Getting the exact moment the ball leaves the foot is too difficult with such small margins.
You seem to have no idea how technology works it’s not at all difficult to scrub through 30 or so frames on a slow motion image and find the exact moment the ball disconnects from the foot and that makes the decision a million times easier VAR itself is a machine it cannot get things incorrect it’s up to the people manning it to have common sense and whether they make the correct decision but the technology if used correctly ensures the correct decision
@@kaiamy3779 You can’t see one mm on a VAR screen or even 1/10th of a mm. So you can never be sure to freeze the i,age at the right time.
Thank you for putting Messi on the thumbnail
Backpass rule wasn't changed because of players, it was changed because it was a common tactic by almost all teams to waste time.
More precisely I think it was changed because it made the game insanely boring to watch.
sounds like a comment from a buthurt Liverpool fan
The backpass rule thankfully came into football. That was ridiculous passing back to the wicket keeper.
The Lampard one (v Germany) isn't a rule change. The rule was that the ball had to completely cross the line, and was the same after. All that was changed is how we determine if the rule is applied correctly or not.
Since when? As far as I remember, if more than half of the ball has crossed the line, it's in.
you missed the fucking point entirely! The rule change wasn't about how much of the ball crossed the line, it was about bringing in goal line technology! Blatter and Platini were against bringing cricket and tennis style tech into the game. What happened against Germany was so obviously a goal, they no longer had any argument against it.
@@jebatman756 what are you talking about? The entire ball has to cross the line
Fifa being very useful for once in a video
cmiiw but wasnt the last man rule added when an arsenal defender chopped down an attacking player when he had a clear shot on goal in some cup final?

What about dudek in 2004 ucl final?
You mean the ”walking infront of the line” rule? That rule has existed since 1905. Its just never enforced. The rule didnt change cuz of him
What about Anelka ?
The St.Pauli legeng Walter Frosch, he collected over 20 yellow cards in a single season.

Bosman rule turned into the commercial driven money game. Good for players, bad for the game
Where is Forlán?
You left out VAR. Why was VAR instituted?
Lampard was the starting point to be fair...
I k ow for a fact that if the back pass goalie rules wasn't changed ... everton and pickford wouldnt be in a relegation fight
what?
Two rules I would like to see 1. Return to the injury management tool used in the 94 world cup. If a player went down the ref merely indicated for a stretcher to be brought onto the field. If a player refused to get on the stretcher they were booked immediately for time wasting. If they were injured, help was quicker to get to them (you can tell I hate the stupid, endless and childish time wasting and play acting which hurts the game) 2. Deliberate handball on the goal line. At the moment its a red card and a penalty. It should be a red card and an automatic penalty goal. Why reward the cheating side with the chance of saving the goal. The fact that the ref awards a red card means the ref has accepted the ball was goal bound and that only cheating prevented it from counting.
i agree with 2nd
I couldn't agree more with the first one..damn the childish play acting is so annoying
@@tilakrajlimbu8907 I believe we need both, at usa94 time wasting wasn't a thing after a couple of send off's for......play acting & time wasting. It's a simple and elegant system that kept play flowing. To be honest the very worst thing of this game is the ridiculous childish play acting. It's not even clever. In my opinion if after match reviews shows the ref missed what wasn't an injury etc suspensions should quadrupled! It's destroying the game and promoted idiots to being special. Other sports don't have, why should we tolerate or even worse accept it?
@@ognet8820 the beauty about the usa94 solution was simplicity itself. No need for var nor even a referee's decision. The it made the player responsible for their own decision.
Title: -footballers who- Tittle: moments which
Sepp blatter said....man what a joke
The introduction of substitutions and yellow cards.
Since when do you need to defenders between you and the goal not to make it offside?
two defenders may possibly include the goalkeeper
2 defenders includes the goalkeeper, so if the keeper was out of his line and you were in front of him and behind 1 defender, it would still be offside
generally are the goalkeeper and a defender, but should say "two opposite players"...
it's not defenders , it's opponents.. It can be the goalkeeper + 1 field players or 2 field players if the goalkeeper is somehow in front of them.
Out of curiosity .What is Messi doing in the thumbnail
I am sorry sir. You forgot one more important thing where the FIFA was forced to change a "PENALTY KICKING RULE". That happened in Albania at 1972(?), when Ramazan Rragami, the socker player of Vllaznia Futbol Club, scored 5 Penalties in one game, against "Besa" Futboll Club of Albania. After this Game, won by VLLAZNIA Of Shkoder-Albania, FIFA changed the rule of Penallty kicking to: ONE Penallty per Player. It is good to be recognized any contribution of non English Players to a modernization of Socker Games and rules.
That's not a rule of the game
Some people ruin it. Others, make it unbelievable. Thank you futbol.
I love the fact they changed the rule for the keepers so that they're forced to learn to use their feet
It was the era where defenders would take goal kicks🤦♂️
Damn it, I thought my screen got a hair.
They feared technology would kill the passion of the game. I mean, they weren't completely wrong, let's be honest.
it's not the technology it's the idiots who are controlling that technology and making the decisions who ruined the game.
I disagree, I think VAR has improved it. The suspense when the referee is going to check is thrilling. VAR needs to be used properly though
Yup VAR means no more diving for penalties. Referees never make any dodgy calls since they know if it wasnt actually a dive and genuine foul, VAR can step in
