How Much Power Does a High-Mileage V10 BMW E60 M5 Make?
In this episode, we do a bit of work on project X5, 2008 E70 4.8i, and project Raleigh, 2007 E60 M5 with a 6-speed manual. The X5 gets a new A/C compressor & condenser, and front wheel bearings. The E60 M5 gets a fresh oil change, new starter, brake fluid and clutch line flush, purge valves, new blower fan and resistor, and soft-touch plastic removal. Then we go for a nice drive and end up on a dyno to see how much power the 5.0L S85 V10 engine with 246k km (153k miles) makes! Also, the dojo gets another Bendpak 2-post lift!

When you love a guys channel so much you give the video a thumbs up even before it's started.
I do the same lol
It's a standard 😂
Damn true
I did exactly the same. There is no way his videos can go wrong.
Nothing wrong with that. If I know I'm going to love it, why wait till the end? I usually wait 10 seconds to make sure KZhead doesn't consider my like from a bot, and that's it.
The new editor is doing a super good job there is no difference in my opinion. Super good work.
I know there’s a Saab guy version of you out there.. please make videos!
Oh there is a new Editor? Honestly, i saw a little difference, especially at the end of the video, with the driving scenes, it was cut a little faster than normal. But i think he did a great job of capturing the vibe of sretens videos.
Tbh I didnt even realize there was new editor, did great job as last one.
@@neato24what’s the Saab guy’s channel? I’m trying to get into them!
@@neato24 It's me but I work a full time job, and I was a video editor by trade! I take a lot of inspiration from this channel. Unfortunately our community consists of a rude Finnish guy who knows everything and parts are always on back order. I have owned 8 9-3s, I have 4 now, including two XWD and I do everything I can to spec and I am as thorough as possible. Oh, and I successfully swapped eLSD to non eLSD car, so I really wish I started there lol. We do have AutoAutopsy and he seems like a good guy, but it's not like Streten here, this guy is what I wish we had.
I cannot praise this channel enough, without a doubt the best motoring restoration/maintenance channel anywhere anytime, it is always a great day when one these videos appear on my time line, keep it up fella you’re outstanding.
Couldn't agree more. Best channel of its kind on KZhead, criminal that he doesn't have more subs.
100%, along with NNKH!
It really is brilliant 👍
Great
Far and away my favourite channel. Humour and expertise, proper bias and extreme care. Thank you Streten.
The S85 with the carbon plenums is absolutely insane sounding! Excellent video as always Sreten. Thank you for bringing us along!
microfiber you mean... 😄
The fact that the car used a quarter of a tank in just 55km is just hilarious. Love the M5.
When a KZhead video is 15 minutes I usually can't be bothered to watch until the end. When Sreten uploads a video I'm disappointed it's just 43 minutes. Keep up the good work Sreten! Hands down the best car channel on KZhead
For the heater issue try to check the “fog” sensor on the windshield. I had the same problem with my E92, the windshield was replaced and they damaged the sensor. I never realized the car had it, it senses the moisture on the windscreen. If it thinks it’s fogged up, the auto setting prioritizes the top vents for hot air. Could be your problem as wel, worth a try :)
It will either be a humidity or condensation sensor, those are most of the time put behind the plastic covering behind the rear view mirror. It would take a special kind of stupid to damage those during windshield replacement but its not entirely unheard of if the location uses extractors to break the urethane bead. I work in auto glass and I never even thought about this until I read your comment and it was a massive light bulb in my head. It could be a super simple fix, then again if they were running just water through the coolant system its probably better to change the core anyways, rust always has a habit of forming in hard to reach and see places
Thank you! Will definitely try.
@@M539Restorations if you haven't done so, using ISTA carry air distribution flap motor addressing and callibration. Also IHKA control unit reset. Just a few options to try.
@@Crunchymunchys that actually does make sense!!!
I was just about to write that! My e60 showed similar behaviour. Initially, I thought the heater core is defect, until I found out about this sensor. Turns out everything was in order and the area where I live (tropical climate) is so humid that the sensor kicks in quite often, causing the windshield fans to blast out hot air!
Man I love this old M5, it sounds like a formula 1 engine, incredible. Well done Sir 👍
"old" - the car was produced till 2010. :) Engine sound is unbeatable by newer turbo engines.
Japanese i6s still sound better s65 sounds better imo
@@i6y155 lmao
@@modco2.127 thats old
It sounds like kawasaki motobike. Crazy.
36:54 'gotta slow down, too much traffic'. Continues to drive 250 km/h. I love the autobahn.
The answer to your issue at the 13min mark is a sensor beside the rear view mirror. It is the front wind screen condensation sensor. It is broken which the car takes to mean there is high humidity present / condensation. So it calls for heat via the wind screen. Cheap and relatively simple to replace this sensor and should address your issue. (took me a while to figure out on a 645ci!)
The combination of you sharing your expertise with us and your humor makes this one of the best KZhead Channels. Truly look forward to every episode.
Well said Sir. 👍
What an awesome sound! Back from the good old days when BMW was in Formula 1 with Williams F1!
What makes this channel so good is not just the fact that you are so knowledgable and a great mechanic but listening to you talk makes it that bit better. Another great video to watch and the V10 sounds amazing!
Your M5 V10 is really a piece of art. Fat thumbs up.
Only person on YT that I’ve seen that take so much care in rebuilding cars and maintaining them afterwards. Always following repair manuals and never forgetting to clean everything.
There's very few KZheadrs like this but one that excels too is Toms turbo Garage, he's got a couple of epic builds with top notch care and quality. Check it out!
Man, you got with with the "microfiber" intake plenums. 😂 😂 😂
I love that you're now calling intake plenums micro fibre 😁
Is this the first time calling carbon fiber micro fiber? I don't remember. Love it. More micro fiber parts for everything!
@@ericdwills14he calls micro fibre cloths carbon fibres, lore
Awesome video as usual. Can’t wait to see the E92 M3, as I have an E92 335i N54, so it has a special place in my heart. Stay safe brother, love the content. Love from Australia
I cannot see another KZhead channel doing what he's doing. I watched him rebuild the epina engine multiple times and I didn't get bored
This channel just keeps getting better and better!
Love your videos, the passion and the attention to every detail is amazing. My new favourite channel:)
This channel is pure gold! Thank you Sreten! 🏎
Watching you go is like therapy!! Anytime you're on, it's a pleasure!!
Wow, just wow! What a machine and journey. Excellent!
Another superb episode Sreten - 2 fantastic motors as well! A great way to occupy a driveway 👍🏼👌🏼
You might want to check the blend doors on the X5. If you have heat that doesn’t sound like a plugged heater core. Usually there is no heat when the core is plugged.
Exactly and the heater core shouldn't prevent the blend doors from opening and closing
Yes, blend doors breaking are even a common thing even on Toyota / Lexus products. Water in the heater core will not ruin or clog it, only real risk is freezing or running it long time. I always run pure water after engine swaps and such, only to replace it with coolant after I know nothing is leaking.
Agreed, heater core seems unlikely if you have heat unless it's some sort of magical heater core. Looked up the part and it looks normal to me. Gotta be blend doors or blend door actuators. Seems like the actuators in the car are all electric, so could have many of them broken or malfunctioning.
Just a small story: Some years ago somebody reached out to me with a Nissan Micra (the strange round shaped one). The dude told me that only on the passenger side the air is warm coming out of the vents. on the driver side it was way cooler. I told him that is impossible because of the simpliyity of the construction... just one heater core ... just some pipes directing the air... you know how it works. But when i checked it it was really much colder on the driver side... my last solution was to change the heater core. and after the change everything was fine... because i was so confused why this happened i cut the heater core in half. That was the strangest thing i have ever seen... the pipes were corroded and rusty where the water entered the core until about half way through the core. the pipes did not get the heat into the fins of the core for the first half of the heatercore. so the air directed to the driver had a much larger part of cold air... That was probably the weirdest failure i had to find...
Also agree, this doesn't sound like a heater core issue to me either.
This guy genuinely loves cars…he’s a real doctor of cars
Excellent as always. Loving those new comment overlays. Top work
Sreten, I'm having an absolute terrible day at work, and I really feel I'm about to do something I'll regret in the future. L I can't tell you how thankfull I am that you posted a episode when I needed it most. I'm watching in small sections because that's how it has to be. But watching you really helps calm me down. Thank you for being you and posting just in time.
Stay strong budy... i am also at work.
I'm pulling for you. Stay strong!
Hang in there mate!
Thanks all, the work day is over for today and other then praying for hours that it was not gonna get any worse then what it was. I came strait home, tossed everything on the floor, got a bowl of ice cream (because it's a hot day) and watched the rest of the episode on the big screen. Beer later on for sure. But just wanted to say thank you again sreten, you are a GEM.
@@imjus1guy That's the right approach. Relax and compartmentalise as much as you can. Ultimately, you are worth so much more than work. If it comes down to making a choice between your health and work, fuck work. Be well man.
A great one again and looking so forward to the next episode with that magnificent M3
Your obvious delight is a treat. Keep it up!
Love it matey, looks and sounds awesome, huge testament to your work ❤
I could sit and watch you work on your cars all day, your humour and work ethic is brilliant and the editing is next level. A joy to watch.
Love your videos, keep up the good work! Also, mad how hard the V10 is still pulling at 270kph!
Yay Mutsie!! What a good puppy. Great content, glad you got the new Bendpak lift! Looking forward to seeing more superb restorations
It's been a rough day for me, This just made it perfect now! Your video's are in the top 3 of my enjoyment! I'm so excited to watch this😊😊
Yet another fine-wrenching episode, my personal favorite thank you very much. I'm loving those new’ish torque values that you've been displaying lately, very nice touch. I can't believe you got so much done in two cars, that's amazing. The S85 V10 sounds glorious, so thank you again for that, Sreten. Those carbon fiber intake plenums bring out the best in that glorious power plant and look beautiful to boot. I can't believe that climate control gave you so much trouble, that must’ve been aggravating. Overall another excellent addition to your always amazing content, I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us, Sreten. By the way, the new Bendpak two-post lift is yet another fine addition to the dojo, and thanks to Luke yet again for doing another fine install. That guy sure goes above and beyond the call of duty. All in all, this was another enjoyable wrenching episode, thanks Sreten and take care of yourself, we’ll see you in the next chapter! Edit: Holy hell, I can't believe you did all that work to replace that goddamn blower fan, that was crazy.
What a beauty an what an enthousiasm! I love every part of it! Can't wait to see more! Watched every episode of thuis channel multiple times and Can't stop doing it!
I love everything about your videos. The wrenching is always a blast, but the views of the beautiful German countryside are just so, so beautiful. Thank you!
M5 noise is incredible! Stunning 🤩
You’ve just made my day,I’m on my 3rd viewing,and I’ll probably watch again tomorrow,thanks again Streten,keep them coming 👍👍👍👍👍👍😊

Thanks for another awesome video Mutsi deserves a KZhead channel for herself alone.
What a beautiful M5. The idea with the starter was fenomenal👍 Love your videos.
Can't get enough of this channel, have been watching from day 1. Hello from the UK :)
Favourite channel at the moment. I was in a big car accident a month back when a van drove over me and have been since in a hospital (and will be another month+). So Ive been watching your old videos again and this upload really made my day and made me not think about this pain all the time. Thanks
Hé Mika, get wel soon.
Damn, man. Sorry to hear, but I'm glad you are recovering. Hope you are out soon. Much love!
Oh boy can't wait to see the work on M3, it's gonna be another awesome journey! I have high hopes that one day you'll bring E46 M3 to your garage, that would be really mint. Anyway, another great episode watched, cheers!
I love when I go out on my lunch break and there’s a new video. Makes the rest of my day at work much better.
Another great example of ingenuity from my favorite channel.
You could have audio tracks of the V10 on music streaming platforms. Great content. So soothing to see you at work making everything seems easy...
Sreten it's obvious that you found your mojo and you are enjoying what you do. Exceptional work sir 👏🏽
What a beast that v10 is, and its aged so well. Great video too!

Vielen Dank für die tollen Videos , die du bringst... Ich feier deine Hingabe zu BMW und den KFZ´s sowie deinen Perfektionismus bei den Reperaturen - Liebe geht raus ❤
Thank you Sreten for your continued dedication to your videos. Inspires me to work on my T4. Been here since proper OG days 👍
I just found this channel and I’ve been on a nonstop binge watching spree. Thank you for making fantastic content! I miss my E39 so much & I think finding this channel has convinced me on getting another one and restore.
I totally agree with you!My Wife and I took our E60 M5 on a 1,100+ mile road trip to the Grand Canyon. What a machine! What comfort!
Love this car man. I was 16 when I first saw a E60 and just fell in love with it. And thanks for mentioning the Top Gear episode - I just get the goosebumps by the way he describes it as soon as you press the M button. Thanks a ton for sharing all this experience with us !
“S85… One of the best engines that BMW ever made. Period.” Absolutely agree!!
So glad I saw this tip about just replacing the guts of the starter. I’m definitely doing this trick on my s85. Thanks sreten!
biggest thing I'm excited about is the two post lift. THAT MEANS MORE PROJECT FRANKFURT!
well I can say two things about this wonderful video: 1- your excellent work brought the deserved bonus congratulations and success in your career I look forward to seeing more of your videos. 2- I bet that BMW prices will go up in Germany after your videos because the desire to own one of these wonderful machines must have grown enormously! greetings from Brazil 😅
Absolutely love this guys attention to detail.
Thank you Sensei ! always great to visit the DoJo
Sreten loving the new torque spec animation. I think it might be time to invest in your own AC machine for those lovely BMWs :).
To add to the last part, the E60 is also a true classic and best looking 5 series ever
Arguably E34 has it in the looks department over any other 5 series because of much cleaner lines and minimalistic approach. E60 looks like a messy over the top chinese copy of a BMW for British market.
What about E28? Arguably the best looking BMW ever, not just the best 5 series.
I love the exhaust sound doppler effect in the drive-by shots.
I love your channel man. I wish I had the opportunity to take care of these super cars like you and enjoy them.
Along with NNKH these are by far the best mechanic channels on KZhead!! Great stuff man! A joy to watch, every time!!
Love watching NNKH
Before completely disassembling the dash, you may want to check and verify all blend door and duct servo actuators are functional. Blower air in the windshield defrost position is usually a fail safe default.
Truly enjoyed this video! Love the conclusion at the end! What a beast!
Every time i give the all videos a thumbs up even before it's started. Sretan you are my inspiration, thank you for a nother great video.
I can't wait till you begin on Project Frankford. That is my absolute favorite M3. And I also agree with you oh, that the M5 you have is the best in five ever made with the V10 engine.
A lot of people ignore the clutch fluid. But flushing can make a big difference in clutch feel and engagement.
One of the best channels I subscribed to!
E60 manual pokemon rare nowdays, great work as always !
Most hidden starter what I ever have seen :D Great job as always 💪
Another BMW engineering achievement. Make it excruciatingly difficult to access a part that should be easy to get to.
Like that blower motor…. Avg Japanese car = 3 screws 1 connector pull down lol
@@kevinc7632 but does that car provide this level of luxury
@@andries4561 lexus uses same design. Would you say modern Lexus vehicles are not as luxurious as old bmw chassis?
If you are getting both warm and cold air, verify that the stepper motors in the HVAC are properly set in the correct positions. They can be reset via the service interface.
Another awesome wrench-fest 😊 That V10 sure sings a sweet tune 👌 I also did my M54B22 rod bearings after your recent 5 series video. Glad I did as although not bad the near decade of no service stamps had taken there toll and now the engine is so much smoother and near whisper quiet at idle 👍
WOW Sreten it really does sound absolutely amazing. Great combo video today.
You made watching other automotive KZheadrs unbearable. You on your own level keep doing u. Awesome content.
wow If I ever have to replace a M5 starter im TOTALLY doing that
that V10 sounds awesome, absolute legend for keeping it alive and in top condition
Another incredible post, man I love your channel. Ironically never was that attracted to BMW until I started watching you dome years ago. I think the company should give you anything you want with the way you present their products. You are just so down to eath and honest.
Have you checked your HVAC blend door actuators?
My first thought was blend door actuators.
The heater core is a heater radiator. No? If it has heat I highly doubt the core is bad. From water? Seems highly improbable. How wimpy are bmws? I've run plain water in my bmws. I don't think to myself anything bad is going to happen. System always looks clean. How about 1980s iron block bmws filled with rust and still works? I ran plain water and liqui moly radiator cleaner in my 03 x5 for months and pushed off replacing it with coolant. The problem lies elsewhere in my opinion. I believe with a scan tool you can activate the vents one by one. I would see what a scanner says and activate each flap motor on and off and see what is happening if that is avaliable. 100ml of oil seems just a tad on the high side to me, I would assume mahle says the compressor has a full charge of oil. I see dry oem compressors. And not much in the new ones. And differing suggestions. It's not like the ac system has a dipstick. Shop manual does have some oil capacities I believe for each ac component. I doubt any issues there with oil added however more just thinking out loud.
Are you sure its the heater core thats faulty on the X5? You said yourself that you get properly hot air form the top vents. I'm guessing this all has to do with worn climateflap servos. Had an issue just like this on a 2003 Porsche 955 cayenne with 4 zone climate. Pretty much all the servos were bad/starting to get bad. -and i'm guessing there is no notable fault codes?
I'm not, haha. But I'm running out of ideas. The damn thing has 13 actuators/flaps for the vents under the dash, I played with a few and didn't find the issue.
@@M539Restorations Yeah, same thing with the Cayenne, a bunch of actuators. I went through the same process of repairing the AC, then changing out the climate computer/button panel. Got a replacement good condition servo/actuator box and everything is now working
Yes, my thoughts as well. If there's heat, the heater core is doing its job, but something else is failing to block it out when it's not wanted.
Sreten, you have been an inspiration ever since i subbed to your channel. Damn, even inspired me to buy a neglected E46 325i and restore it myself.(Work in progress). Have learnt so much by watching and reading what you do on the cars. A big THANK YOU and a bow to your never ending ambition to always improve and get the best possible outcome.
