Fixing Up & Driving an Icon on The Autobahn - The BMW E39 M5
In this episode, we are working on my favorite car, the E39 M5. We start off with an oil change, but find a leak from the oil pan and along the way a few more things. We are replacing the oil pan gasket, water pump, thermostat, valve covers, fuel pump, trunk badge and installing monoballs in the thrust control arms. Followed up by driving on the Autobahn and hitting some lovely German countryside roads.

Sreten is one of the last automotive KZheadrs that doesn’t fill the videos up with ads and doesn’t stand around talking and not take 50 videos to finish a small project major props to Sreten keep up the good work much support!
Yes you are absolutely right! He always consistanly provides great videos. Thoroughly explains everything with no unnecessary chatter. I just cannot stop from watching these video’s. He has high standards, his work is impeccable.
Yes, hail Sreten!
I don't know if he dose it or You Tube but had too much ads on this clip,2 afer 2 after 2 after 2 clips of comercials, driving me nuts, enjoy the clip, but the stupid comercials (ads) no.
So many nothing vids on YT from ego feeders who just want to see themselves. This channel ain't one of them. Thank God I found it.
Dude, the pacing and editing of your videos is just fantastic. You could make toaster repair interesting. Thanks again for the wonderful content.
Thank you, Jason!
If you really love your gf more next time borrow her hair dryer to make the badge removal easier, this way she can feel more involved 😂
Please make a toaster repair video!
Dont tell him this, he will now make a video of a toaster.... and we will cheer him up for it.
Coooooming up. I repair a broken toaster.
This car is the ultimate super saloon bar none.Still looks so good 25 years on too.
It has a design which will never get old. It looks better and better with every new model released. The upcoming new 5 Series looks like a Hyundai, it's a catastrophic failure
Watching long videos on youtube is boring, except M539Restorations. These are a delight.
Sreten, you spoil us! I was expecting just an oil change and service but we were gifted with 1h20 of splendid content!! The Le Mans Blue looks fantastic. I cannot wait until I have an E39 M5 of my own, but these videos are certainly making the wait easier. Good luck with the beautiful M5 and I look forward to seeing what's in store for the B7!
I can't wait when he will start working again to the old E21 3-series..
@@poplaurentiu4148 seems like the constant Alpina curveballs have been taking up shop space and time
But be care with your own M5E39 because what he has done consume a lot of money....
To be fair I think we have to thank the BMW engineers for turning a 10 minute oil change into a 1 hour 20 minute movie. But Sreten nails the lead role
I had an e39 M5. It was a phenomenal car, LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather. Mighty expensive to use a daily driver and keep to a relatively perfect level on maintenance. I eventually decided to replace mine with an e36 M3, with a Mini in between. The e36 is the far more affordable and reliable car. It's also a lot more raw and fun to daily, but not nearly as comfortable or fast in a straight line.
Gosh, that was the best $4 I started investing through Patreon to have a good time!
Your experience with older BMWs is the perfect contraception to my desire of buying one.
This is pretty much the only channel i watch with my eyes glued to the screen for the whole video. I absolutely love your videos. I have a request tho. I know it probably takes a lot of work and time to edit such a long video but PLEASE DONT ever make them shorter. I would gladly watch even a 3 hour video of you fixing a BMW. So perfect. Thank you for this.
Eggzackerly right Jan - greetings from 🇿🇦 - this dude kept me sane during Covid and basically taught me an online course for old school - pre computer E60 series BMW maintenance - for free 😜😈 And - most importantly he taught us that anyone can learn this stuff, to understand our cars better and drive with confidence 👏👏 - give that man a Bells or a cold 🍺 Am currently looking for a cheaper version of this car with the 3.0 straight six = an E39 530 or May be even a solid 540i if I can find a decent one And I don’t care about the fuel consumption - I just love to drive - listening to Ahmed kilic party music or trance music (at 63 years old !! ) One Life = Live it !! And while the greenies go EV - do they can by tracked and monitored etc - we’ll stay old school and drive like every caveman was designed to = we still got 100% male DNA Now where am I going to install that hoist ?? 🤔
everything he said...me too 🙌
NOBODY! Else does car content quite like this over the last couple of years this has easily been the best car KZhead channel out there the attention to detail and the humour are second to none thankyou so much for your hard work .
Thank you for continuing to listening to your audience and making these videos longer and longer, I really do look forward to & appreciate it!!!
Next video, 6 hours 👍
Seeing that clean oil pan sit under the engine is SO satisfying..
I like to see people who figure things out no matter. You don't care how - You just act. Got to love that.
"I'm trying to flush a very big turd called project Chicago" That's how you keep morale high in difficult times!
I can't believe how much has gone wrong with the Alpina... and it's the ugliest car he's worked on! So much work on that turd...
@@lptomtom that's the story with pretty much every e65. They are pile of issues on wheels.
Came to the comments for that. Not disappointed 😂
@@lptomtom it's quite less uglier than the pre-facelift.
The addiction I have developed for your videos is freaking unbelievable. Been waiting 4 days refreshing the page for this one.
This is better than any recommended content - I learn something each time I’m here.
As we say in Japan “This is gold!!” Thanks again for awesome and thorough content!
The E39 M5 is no doubt one of the greatest M cars ever created, extremely well engineered, styled and put together. Very comfortable, very reliable, very connected and communicative to the driver. Sreten i cant thank you enough for this great content.
The moment when the man who assembled the alpina engine and later stuffed the M5 badge upside down :D Keep up great content I love it!
I find it relaxing watching cars being serviced or just being fixed
Same here 😊 And satisfying (this channel)
One of the Best Car Channels on the Tube and definitively der BESTE for Beemer Content!!!
Sreten, this is such great content. The cut to the press and "time to hold the press conference" said pragmatically got me laughing good :D
Same here, we just witnessed a brand new addition to the M539 lexicon hahaha.
Another wonderful video. Really happy to see 1hr+! Glad you can make a living from working on your own cars, teaching and entertaining all of us while doing so.
Your videos have inspired me to rebuild my E38 735 to the highest standard i can!!! currently a work in progress, Its the very first 735 in RHD off the line, vin DK50000, keep up the good work!!! You are the Man!!
That's special. In UK?
@@YOCOSMINMAX16 no sir, I live in little old New Zealand
How's it going with the rebuild?
@@BlueWafer shit to be honest, I had some electrical issues the day before I went to take it to a panelbeater for some chassie damage, no communication with any module, been looking for a shed to rent, also have a e38 750il, 728, and a f01 750 which have taken up my funds for the last while
Your E39 is the same color as my E39. But mine is no M5. It's a 528i. But I give mine the same love as you do. Fixed it all up and use it as daily driver. I completely agree with you - The E39 the best car in the world. And in my little world the E39 528i is the best car xD.
I don't see myself ever rebuilding a BMW, but I love watching your channel!! It's akin to meditation.
Great content as always. Life has thrown me a curve ball, and according to my doctors, my days are numbered. As such, having such enjoyable and interesting video to distract and watch is a real bonus. Thank you for the effort to put it all together. 👍
I wish you well my friend, peace love and eternity
Are you still alive
Woke up, thought “yay a new M539 video”, 80 mins later and kids are late for school, I’m late for work but we all have a BMW roundal sized smile on our face 😁
Great to shift her after so much work at the garage...You deserve it after so much care you give to her
I both love and hate this channel, love it for the quality and detail of the work, the humour and dedication, the knowledge and professionalism, and I hate it because I no longer have an e39 M5. (I had 3 and loved every one of them)
jump back into an e39! Car still looks great
I've owned 3 e39s, a 520i, 523i and an m5. All wonderful machines and don't look or feel like a now 25 year old plus car. Wow, the e39 is 25 years old. That interior still looks and feels better than a lot of new cars today.
The e39 is such a gorgeous, best car ever made, I’m glad your keeping it forever
E39 M5 and E46 M3 are two of the most beautiful cars ever made. Chris Bangle involved in both.
The E39 design was finalized in 1992, right before Bangle joined BMW. Joji Nagashima started designing it in 1989 under then chief designer Claus Luthe, who left in 1992.
"Don't argue, it just is." No truer words, my friend.
Finally: no accidents, no engine fails, bombs or flying cars. Congrats! I thougt you where curse for a while
This video felt like a movie - it was great I loved every second of it, thank you for all your efforts my friend!
Sreten, big greetings to you from Russia, I continue to watch your videos with great pleasure, you helped me a lot with advice on manual transmission, since there is a problem with switching to cold on my E39, thank you! I wish you great success and prosperity of the channel and your personal business, I am inspired by your painstaking and great attention to quality spare parts, it's good that there are such people from whom you can take a share of the example!)))
Que hiciste para mejorar el problema del cambio en frío?
this is a man i would trust with my car
Sreten is the Best BMW KZheadr going. His car is also my favourite car!
The choice of contemporary music is just as spot on as everything in your videos. Pure delight!
This is, easily, one of the cleanest E39's on the market! great job man
Love your edits when you’re torquing something and when you put the velocity stacks in, oddly satisfying
Yes, Sreten! Women also watch your channel :-) I watch it with my husband and thanks to it I understand his love for our e39 even more ;-)
Love to see work being done to this, because a V8 with ITBs sure isn't commonplace! My dad used to have a Carbonschwarz '99 with extended caramel leather upholstery. Absolutely gorgeous machine, and not a day goes by when i don't think about it
It is simply amazing how much effort you give, even performing preventative maintenance. Vapor blasting the oil pan, something that won't see daylight but two to three times a year. I love it!
Always nice to see a video on The Best Car Ever Made.
This channel makes my love for my E39 much more stronger!
That's one nice looking beast. I totally agree this is one of the best production car ever made. I have been owning this for the last 4 years and it never forgets to put a smile on your face when you take it for a drive.
This is why we're here. Love this E39 M5, so freaking perfect 😎
I have a 1997 E39 535i with a broken gearbox.Just last week a was talking about selling it.After watching this,I get the inspiration back to repair it.thank you.
As a native spanish speaker, its very funny hear you saying some random phrases, also you speak spanish very good! Love your videos, cheers from Uruguay 🇺🇾
Great job as always. My mechanic pushes me to do the timing chain and guides, because they were changed in 2005. They have only done 50000 km so I’m trying to push him just to check the oil pan and change the tensioner only. However, he is very persistent, repeatedly saying “preventive measure” 😀. Need to make my mind, tough decisions. Respect from Prague!
ohhh. that rumble up the hill in 3rd. Fantastic sound.
I swear to God i respect this guy for his brilliance! I come home everyday after work and watch his videos on the TV while having bear, the only thing i would like to mention is, i want him to post videos more often since i watched all of them! So please hear me out and bring more content, it is so satisfying! Good man and great job! Absolutely amazing
That blue car looks awesome!
Love the e39, I have had 2 530i’s and love them, my first one died sadly due to previous owners overheating the motor, but my second one is currently at 208,000 miles and I love it! It’s a bit of a pricy car for a 20 year old but it’s okay, I work overtime for her😂❤️
Preventative maintenance, replace every single engine part lol. Great video Sreten, hope you enjoyed Nice
You do have a senorita right here, watching every video and loving them all.
the clean fluid bottle was an overlooked improvement!
Years ago, in Italy... Mario: "Gino, quanto sigillante devo mettere per i coperchi delle punterie?" Gino: "Sì"
Good to see some E39 action back on the channel, thanks for all the hard work Sreten 😎
Those wheels are the best that BMW ever put on a car!
Those country roads have some beautiful scenery! Perfect backdrop for the the best car ever made!
One of the best cars ever made E39 M5 ❤️
I love these videos so much. It's like the perfect opportunity to sit down with a good drink and enjoy the fruits of your labour. I live in Iceland by the way. As expected, importing parts here is very expensive, so owning (and properly maintaining) a BMW is similar to having like two kids as a single parent. Or so I'm told.
Well you can just brush and feed your 8 legged horse instead of owning a car. 😂🐴
With so much love, an m5 engine will run forever🥰👏🏻🔝🤙🏼
One of the most beautiful cars in the world, unarguably the most beautiful sedan ever built .. and those rims .. love it since like I was a kid driving it in Need For Speed 🙏🏽
Imagine having to remove vibration damper to replace water pump. Good job, BMW
He replaced it cause it was 20 years old and leaking.
I put turner monoball front control arm bushings on my E46 and I had a very similar experience in regards to the steering. They really transformed the car and it even made the braking feel rock solid. The only downside is that I went through two different sets in less than 30k KM. They would clunk and rattle and simply were not worth the trouble. They also have to be greased periodically. I also recently put redline D4 ATF in my manual transmission and it’s the best fluid I have ever put into this car so atf seems to work in many different applications. Great video!
I also have the same problem with my E46 325i. The shifting is bit hard when it's cold. Which fluid do you recommend to get? :-)
@@mustafahaseb1698 so I am currently using redline d4 ATF. I must warn you though that I live in SoCal so my experience with this fluid is with weather no colder than 50 degrees F. With that being said I had redline MTL-90 and I thought that was a good fluid but the ATF is another step above that. The transmission truly feels silky smooth when shifting.
@@mustafahaseb1698 Get the same with my E92 330I. It doesn't bother me tho, just a quirk and also reminds me to take things easy until all fluids are warm.
I put in Febi 40580 to a bmw getrag 6 speed of this vintage (420g?) and I doubt anything will fix a sticky when cold 2nd gear fluid wise.
For those of you having trouble with shifting while cold, try blipping the throttle up few hundred rpms while pulling lever into the gear. It helps lining up synchromesh in the transmission and it will shift easier. I had few manual Bmw's and second gear was always problem when cold. Talking about real cold, up to -35C and this trick worked. Always used only Bmw MTF.
I loved my E39 and M60 M5's. I wish I still had them! enjoying your videos each morning on my treadmill!
still kinda think im the only teen watching your videos from the first second to the last one... i find myself in you, undoing-fixing/replacing-cleaning-installing. doing things the right and best way possible.. hope ill make it out in life
If there is one automotive dream I could choose I'd go ahead and say I would love it if there would still be E39 M5's around in solid condition when I'll be able to afford buying and maintaining one.
Amazing car. Very enjoyable to watch. Wish I had bought one of these when they were still affordable
I just left Frankfurt but nothing beats getting there after long flights. Grabbing some beers and watching an episode of M539.
I just dont see how you dont have 1 M subscribers yet . YOU DESERVE IT BUDY...
I wish you, and your cars, and your girl, great health and wealth so we have more of these videos, really enjoy the videos.
Thanks Sreten for all the content you make. Its highly appreciated and you are a true inspiration for me and many others! I have watched all your videos (many of them several times) and promoted you everywhere I can because you deserve it 100%. The way you work, the passion you have, the quality of the videos, the cars, the tools, and everything is just amazing. I hope someday to be 50% as good as you!
This is the only KZhead channel that I look forward to the next video. Love the work, the attention to detail and cleanliness you strive to keep. The M5 is such a beautiful car.
The styling of the E39 is, and always shall be, timeless. Even more so in that gorgeous blue!
And the e46 was a little smaller but nearly identical. Truly a timeless design, nothing gaudy or extra.
Such an excellent machine! I was close to getting one back in the day but stayed with my M3
I don't even own a bmw but i love watching you work on these cars. Also, is that a freaking E type jaguar at 2:17 ?
Get yourself a bmw life is to short not to enjoy it.... But u have to be prepaired to get urhands dirty some time. Fixing old car yourself is something really special that not many people know about. U fix old bastard, restore it and than smash it into a tree like sreten 😉
I thought I was the only one to realize. Amazing!
Loving the content! One of the best automotive channels on KZhead. Greetings from a former BMW mechanic and Salesman aus Holland
that road, that engine and third gear love love love
Absolutely love these long episodes! What an amazing talent you have for these cars mate ! And the high speed runs are just the best 🤙🤙🤙
You want an amazing sound with one of these, try removing the intake plenum cover, disconnecting the mass air flow sensors and then giving it a rev. Did this many times as a BMW tech in the workshop. It's the most glorious V8 induction roar that you'll ever hear. Just loved doing it!
Sreten, I appreciate the editing, commentary, and genuine enthusiasm you have working on the "Ultimate Driving Machine!"
Sreten, there are entertainers and teachers in life. You my friend are both. Always look forward to your videos. That car belongs to a lucky man
If this man asked a 100k for it I'd pay for it without thought Especially because it's rare and going up in value, not to mention it is the best M5 BMW ever built
They'll hit that amount sooner than you think. This car never declined in popularity ever. But gets rarer with every passing year. The 3rd party tuner versions are even rarer.
Would be cool to see you do a dry ice cleaning on the underside of this car
when he opened the plenum my jaw dropped. love these old school NA beemers
I’m an Audi guy but I love watching your videos. Hello from New York City 🏙
Love the dark blue tone paint on BMW's, mine was imperial, also owned a carbon black 5 series, that is nice as well. Chunky looking michelins are brilliant.
Agreed. Got those rubbers on my own car as well. Excellent set of tires.
Incredible car! Used to be my first own car and still love its design to this day. If I were a transformer I would choose to transform into this car 😃
The car is self healing. Got to love it.
I work on my e36 on the street sidewalk, no garage or driveway, jackstands and cardboard under the car. You Sreten motivate me and I know one day I'll have a lift. Keep at it these videos are gold!
i love it how he says "i'll take the e60" such a king
@1:00:18 Sorry Sreten, your girlfriend is wrong. You do have senorita's watching the channel! ^^
Yep 😊
I've never seen a road so beautiful as the one you test drives
Sreten, your German is coming along nicely. Keep it up, we love you.
keep up the great work!
Hope the monoballs works well, it's frustrating to change the arms so many times
Sreten! That windshield washer fluid tank cap needs some love ASAP!
Everytime I watch your videos, I got goosebumps because of the way you take care of your cars and beautiful workmanship. Thank you Sreten for all ASMR of your torquing sound.
