Think he was replaced as whip by Trent Lott... but my memory wasn't what it was...lol. He was always outspoken ...it's just how he was and is known for his clever and sardonic quotes. It seems everything previous to these days had an element of civility, and at the head of that civility was H.W. Bush. Many good memories and unique pride in serving during that period of time. He had a quick dry sense of humor and very even tempered and sincere when he served as a senator. Especially when he served on the Senate Judiciary committee during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. Incidentally, it was none other than Joe Biden who was the chairman of that committee. And the "vase and the vase" joke was simply to underscore how the mere pronunciation of an item, no matter how expensive or well-thought-of said item might be, does nothing to enhance its worth. Taken a step further: Titles bestowed upon persons do nothing to enhance their worth. In my opinion, it was a brilliant allegory, considering the senator’s very immediate audience.
