Tombstone is a 1993 American Western film directed by George P. Cosmatos, written by Kevin Jarre (who was also the original director, but was replaced early in production, and starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, with Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, and Dana Delany in supporting roles, as well as narration by Robert Mitchum.
The film is loosely based on real events that took place in the 1880s in Southeast Arizona, including the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp Vendetta Ride. It depicts several Western outlaws and lawmen, such as Wyatt Earp, William Brocius, Johnny Ringo, and Doc Holliday. Tombstone was released by Hollywood Pictures in theatrical wide release in the United States on December 25, 1993, grossing $73.2 million worldwide. The film was a financial success, and for the Western genre, it ranks number 16 in the list of highest-grossing films since 1979. Six months later, the similarly themed film Wyatt Earp was released with far less commercial success.[5] Critical reception was generally positive, with the acting, directing, and story receiving praise. Particular praise went towards Val Kilmer's memorable performance as the hard-drinking Doc Holliday. The film has become a cult classic since its release.
Plot
In 1879, members of an outlaw gang known to wear red sashes called the Cowboys, led by "Curly Bill" Brocius, ride into a Mexican town and interrupt a local police officer's wedding. They then proceed to massacre the assembled policemen in retribution for killing two of their fellow gang members. Shortly before being shot, a local priest warns them that their acts of murder and savagery will be avenged, referencing the biblical fourth horseman.
Wyatt Earp, a retired peace officer with a notable reputation, reunites with his brothers Virgil and Morgan in Tucson, Arizona, where they venture on toward Tombstone to settle down. There they encounter Wyatt's long-time friend Doc Holliday, who is seeking relief in the dry climate from his worsening tuberculosis. Josephine Marcus and Mr. Fabian are also newly arrived with a traveling theater troupe. Meanwhile, Wyatt's common-law wife, Mattie Blaylock, is becoming dependent on laudanum. Wyatt and his brothers begin to profit from a stake in a gambling emporium and saloon when they have their first encounter with the Cowboys.
As tensions rise, Wyatt is pressured to help rid the town of the Cowboys, though he is no longer a lawman. Curly Bill begins shooting at the sky after a visit to an opium den and is told by Marshal Fred White to relinquish his firearms. Curly Bill accidentally shoots the marshal dead and is forcibly taken into custody by Wyatt. The arrest infuriates Ike Clanton and the other Cowboys. Curly Bill stands trial but is found not guilty due to a lack of witnesses. Virgil, unable to tolerate lawlessness, becomes the new marshal and imposes a weapons ban within the city limits. This leads to a gunfight at the O.K. Corral, in which Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers are killed. Virgil and Morgan are wounded, and the allegiance of county sheriff Johnny Behan with the Cowboys is made clear. As retribution for the Cowboy deaths, Wyatt's brothers are ambushed; Morgan is killed, while Virgil is left handicapped. .

When Doc saw Wyatt make the decision to go, without him, he thought, this is a honourable , courageous man who doesn’t need me and is willing to fight and die for everyone around him. Then I thought, did doc pull himself up out of his bed to help his friend in his time of need, or did doc get energy and got better because of his friends courageous? Who knows? I don’t. But it’s such a great movie when it makes you think like this.

  • Although this scene is largely invented, the historical attention to detail is still great. In real life nobody really knows who shot Johnny Ringo but his death was offically recorded as a suicide (Doc was apparently in a different state at this time). Ringo was found with an angled gun shot to the front side of the temple, and here they have Doc shooting him from the hip to achieve this. Ringo was also found with only one round discharged from his pistol, which they have him doing here as he staggers forward. The location is about correct, and Ringo was buried where he was found. You can visit his grave.

    @ringtail1410@ringtail14102 ай бұрын
    • The shot that killed Ringo was in his right temple between his eye and ear, not above the left eye toward the hairline, with an exit wound at the top back of his head. He was found sitting against a tree, and the man who found him, Robert Boller, located where the bullet entered the tree not far from his head. Ringo had been drinking heavily for the previous two weeks and was depressed, and had apparently fallen off his horse and even out of his boots, as strips of his shirt were found around his feet and his horse was found two weeks later, still with its saddle and apparently with at least one boot still in the stirrups. It's not hard to imagine someone like Ringo, already battling depression and so drunk he can barely stay on his horse, falling off, making a hash of attempts to fashion protection for his feet, and deciding to end it all.

    • I didn't think Kurt Russell was bad, he was just...Kurt Russell. He did say in _The Making of Tombstone_ that he had his hands so full with the logistics of trying to get the movie made (working 20 hours a day, editing the script, making shot lists etc.) that he didn't have _time_ to play Wyatt Earp. :)

  • This was my second favorite scene, so well acted by both men, But in my opinion it could have been better in one way. The bar scene where they met and spoke in latin, this should have been done in latin as well. that way it could literally bookend this whole progression of theirs. It would have necessitated translation subtitles, but i think it'd have made the scene even better. It would have been two educated men on a field of honor

  • Holiday never did. The deputes did. But ringo got away. Ringo ran out of water his horse died. Ringo went on foot. Ringo was found under a tree with bullet hole in head. Ringo committed suicide no more than 300 yard from water. He was discovered by a farmer and his son. They put Ringo in the ground and took Ringos gun. The gun has never ever showed up.

I'm from Wyoming and a old west historian. I know alot of stories of Butch Cassidy. when I was a boy I was set on a old man's lap and he told true stories of old west. This was in bags Wyoming were his sister lived.

    • His horse didn't die, it was found in a nearby town with Ringo's boots still attached. He somehow lost his horse (with boots), and when he was found he had cut up strips of his undershirt to wrap around his feet, so presumably he'd been walking a long while. He apparently suffered with depression and had expressed desire to end himself throughout his life. Whether he definitely did so is not totally known, although was indeed officially recorded as a suicide
