Most people don't notice because it happens so fast, but at 0:30 Curly Bill lays down a bet on the Faro table, Wyatt shakes his head slightly no, then moves Curly Bill's bet to another card. As soon as he does this Bill Paxton starts counting out money, and Wyatt flips the card to reveal Curly Bill won $500. Wyatt was trying to diffuse the building tension, and Curly Bill backing Ike down immediately afterward shows that it worked, albeit briefly.

@Vankruze I had no idea. I understood Doc Holliday to have been a man born into wealth, a bona-fide member of the landed Southern gentry with all the trappings of wealth (including a classical education, hence his knowledge of Latin). I think he was also originally a dentist by trade (hence the moniker "Doc"). I would have expected the real Doc Holliday to speak with the sort of upper-crust accent and affectations of a wealthy, well-bred Southerner, as portrayed by Kilmer.

@tomservo5347 Жыл бұрын
Here's why this scene is brilliant. Ringo is trying to bait Doc to showing his draw. Doc holds his pistol on the front of his hip, which isn't common. In a duel, knowing how your opponent draws gives you an advantage. Like knowing how a baseball pitcher throws. Doc does the cup trick because it diffuses the situation WITHOUT showing Ringo his draw. Doc is probably better than Ringo anyway, but this gives Doc an advantage over Ringo for when they eventually duel. It's brilliant.

I read in a biography that Doc knew 4 languages fluently and knew a great deal of French. During a lot of his gun battles he would recite lines from Shakespeare and the Bible. His mother died very quickly after contracting consumption. Doc went on to live many more years that he was expected to despite smoking and drinking 2 quarts of whisky per day and constantly being in dangerous situations. So many people in the Old West were just plain nuts. For instance, despite how he appears in Tombstone, Johnny Ringo was supposedly borderline psychotic. Many Old West legends were Civil War vets suffering from what we now know as PTSD. I think Doc used his IQ to make so many of these people think he was more nuts than they were.

Oh my, such an educated critic. His (I guess) loss.
These guys could not be replaced. Acting made to perfection. Damn I love that whole scene!
Apparently there was another one or possibly two, but one for sure with Kevin Costner and I was not near as good as this one.
and the one and only jason priestly from the tv serie beverly hills in the background wearing round glasses .
Damn...I swear. "Tombstone" is one of those rare movies where the cast looks like the movie gods brought the planets into line. A true underrated classic. And chock full of quotable quotes. It never ceases to amaze me how many people will know in an instant the movie you're referring to it you throw out a quote.

The amount and level of talent in this scene, and in the movie, is immeasurable! Change one actor, and the movie fails. Change one line, and the scene falls flat. Absolute perfection.
Is that an Amadeus reference? Deep cut :)
It’s a top 10 movie ever made
I always loved how Ringo sneaks a smile after Doc’s performance. Even he couldn’t deny Doc’s greatness.
Or he didnt want to give away that he just became afraid of Doc.
Like a true master, Doc learned all of Ringo’s tells while not revealing any himself and still demonstrating that he can match his skills AND mock him with them. I don’t care if you hate westerns, this scene was masterfully crafted, to say nothing of the superb screenplay and performance of those involved! “There’s something about him. Reminds me of......me!” “Evidently Mr. Ringo is an educated man. Now I REALL hate him!” Don’t mess with the dentist!
He probably learned the Latin in Medical School. Ringo knows he is actually out of his league look at that nervous mustache wipe he does after spinning his guns. I like how Kate just keeps drinking and isn't worried at all.
@@AnnaLVajda Exactly right Anna, as we saw when the finally met up, Ringo tried to talk his way out of before finally relenting to the duel with Doc

How Val Kilmer was not nominated is the worst crime in cinema history. If Gene Hackman won the previous year in Unforgiven, then they should have recognized Val’s performance as well.
Blue&Orange Agreed 👊🏽.
Are you saying Tombstone is better movie than the Fugitive, Schindler’s list, and in the line of Fire.
He gave Johnny Ringo the best/worst facial ever. Embarrassed the hell outta him
Ikilled ColMustard - If he is, then he’s 100% correct.

Funny thing is, that's not even the Kings position. Unless one plays Faro a lot, that may not be noticed.
Nice
@ NomnomJawsnomnom. good catch. I thought I knew this movie well. I've watched this movie close to a hundred times and I never noticed that small but important detail. Thanks for the spot and the explanation.
You have eagle eyes man...!
Always saw Billy counting out the money, but never knew what game it was Wyatt was dealing for. Also thought Doc was the dealer in real life, but maybe not
Why Val Kilmer didn't at least get an Oscar nod for this movie is beyond me!
One of his greatest roles, and I agree with you,
Not even a nomination! Criminal.
Your right this was his best Performance
Way ahead of his time... People weren't ready
That’s how you calm a situation…. Confidence, and humor… then you wait patiently for the inevitable… 👍🔥❤️
I met Michael Biehn in Tombstone many years ago....he was very nice and approachable....he took a pic with me and signed a leather gun belt I bought in Tombstone
Whoever played Big nose Kate was beautiful.
Val Kilmer should have been nominated for this role. He nailed it🤍. Tombstone is a classic masterpiece ✨️
"not me, I'm in my prime"
demek matthews yeah you lookin'
Field Marshal Observant *yeah, you look it
Best comback line since Clint s make my day
I told a coworker that once(him being 12 years younger) and he had the same look as ringo. Lol
@demek matthews: I’m in my prime too 😀!
One of the greatest scenes in cinematic history!
Michael Behn stated his pistol was a specially balanced 'dazzle' competition pistol. He said it was balanced so perfectly that he got the twirling down pat in no time, but I think he was just being modest as he really picked it up rapidly.
Great comment
💯🔥
Every time I see one clip of this I want to watch the entire movie lol
I believed that Ringo showed off how fast he was and that gave Doc an advantage. Doc had excitement in his eyes because he felt Ringo might be the one to end it all for him in a duel and not with his boots off.
Yeah you could tell Doc was pushing his buttons to get him to respond in some way. This in turn would allow him to see his style.
The moment Johnny Ringo signed his own death certificate ...
@Mike Grizz: Has this been confirmed ?
I agree, Ringo played himself by showing how fast he was....
RIP to Powers Boothe and Bill Paxton, you where very good!
paulpcarter81 I Was 🤔 the same thing.
Both of them along w/ Kurt - Marvel Cinematic Universe
"Well.....bye!" Great one liner. RIP
I like how powers booth has a sense of humor
This scene show Ringo , that even a drunk Doc can mimic his moves. Instilling fear Doesn’t even blink when ringo takes out the gun
I totally agree with you. This scene portrays how Doc Holiday is even more dangerous & composed than Ringo. I loved Ringo though ! You do know these are actual real characters from the modern era
@@666polkilla The show offs with the loaded mouth are never the threat.

No he just made a show of it lightning the mood for a better time. Ringo was just fooling about Doc wasn't.

Classic scene! Love it! Greatest western in my opinion!
Watching this movie often for 23yrs. I laugh EVERY time Doc spins his cup.
Brilliant Acting by Val Kilmer! Shame on the Oscar Committee for not nominating Mr Kilmer for an Oscar!

Very sweet. 😍
The casting alone in this film was unbelievable. Val definitely deserves his flowers for his role as Doc Holiday, but the chemistry between the actors. It's like their characters really have known each other for years. Powers Booth and Michael Biehn have great on screen chemistry. Michael and Val. Electricity in the air man! Val and Kurt... You can feel their bond! Last charge of Wyatt Earp and his immortals! That shit still gives me goosebumps 30 years later.
Cracks me up every single time. No movie has more fantastic scenes.
Kilmer is the GOAT but Stephan Lang's performance is sneaky underrated he makes the movie and stands out as the most entertaining Cowboy. "Law just don't go round here! Lawdog" gets me every time. Definitely my favorite movie
Every actor in this movie was perfect for their roles. It's a classic. Everything in it came put very well. All the pieces fit.
Una de las mejores películas de todos los tiempos en su género. Con unos actorazos que merecían un Oscar.
Damn I forgot I was watching the clip, got all relaxed and sitting back in my lazy boy then it ended.....😂😂
That click of the eyes where he sort of knows he underestimated him fantastic acting I love this film x
I heard Michael Beihn said he practiced the gun trick for months on end.
Yea he said he carried a real pistol used for 'flash' competitions and said it wasn't that difficult as it was perfectly balanced. After getting instructed by a professional he'd endlessly practice whenever he wasn't acting.
I'd imagine he did, if he could do all of that after just a few days or weeks then that would be pretty damn impressive
@@geedee1264 It just shows how dedicated to acting he is. He wanted it to look authentic on screen without using a double. Cool how he said that right from the first script reading he knew Johnny Ringo was the character he wanted. The entire movie couldn't have possibly been cast better. While Russell is a first rate Wyatt Earp, Kilmer stole the show with his portrayal of Doc Holliday.
The more I watch it the more I am stunned by the cast ! Chocka block with known actors with dozens of notable movies behind them. Epic !😎👍
What do you say darling should I hate him😂😂😂 fantastic quote
I'm sure I hate him
Kurt Russel was absolutely brilliant in Tombstone . . . and still managed to get upstaged by the wonderous Val Kilmer. Such a shame he stopped caring (or whatever happened) after a while and took lesser roles, but here he was at his peak and a joy to behold.
James Arte this movie made such an impression on Kurt he named his son after his character.
Still made a hell of a performance even after taking over directorial duties!
Wasn't quite finished yet. He made Heat a couple of years later.
Wyatt Russel is mid thirties.
IIRC after this he was in Heat, then not sure why his career winded down
one of the best scenes ever.
Oh yes certainly he would have played with their minds to amuse himself and people more intelligent often seem crazy anyway.
The acting from everybody is just crazy and amazing to watch
This scene was great because while everyone was cheering Ringo on. Ringo was positive he outclassed Doc Holiday but with the mug Doc quickly made a mockery of it and turned Ringo's very impressive trick into a joke.
Doc's way of saying "if you think I'm funny when I'm drunk...you wouldn't want to take me on when I'm sober and serious. "
such a gorgeous actress... Wow that smile at the end, so delicate and feminine yet so.....rawr.
This movie should have been called Mustache City
Stir It Up that’s a good name cuz everyone has a big mustache 🤣
Accurate to history, though. All main characters in this movie also had big mustaches in real life.

One of the top 3 best western movies in history
Ringo: you retired? Doc: not me, I'm in my prime. GOLD!!!!!!
Yeah, he looked it.
Yup. Still a legendary classic.
Val Kimler you was awesome as Doc Holiday, you really should have had an Oscar for your performance.
This movie was closest by far on capturing the real life personality and mentality of all the people involved with one big exception,Morgan Earp..they make him look scared and cowardly alot in this movie and it is well documented he was a fearless hothead and almost a twin to Doc holiday in personality.
The Best Modern Western of all time.
I’ll be your huckleberry. Most iconic like ever.
Its hard to watch others play the part of Doc Holiday after watching Val Kilmers oscar deserving performance.
Love how Wyatt Earp never stopped loving Doc Holiday!!!!! Here's to all the Doc Holidays male and females!!!! Whoop whoop!!!
He ain't drunk. He's learning.
Best scene in the movie hands down!

Im a Ringo fan...love how he does the mustache swipes after the skillz presentation it was so smooth 😂
He yells "Drinks are on me!" and throws $500 dollars in the air. I bet $500 back then was a two years salary!!!

This is just the way I groom and present myself in certain places !

I love how everyone thinks Ringo outgunned Doc, only to get one-upped with a shot glass. Best part is, Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn actually did this. They learned how to do it, of course, and then showed off their skills.
The tin cup was apparently Vals idea.

One of the best western ever made
I watch this movie at least once a year with my pops. One of my favorite western movies of all time. And it’s all due to Val Kilmer performance.
The gun trick is actually called a. Pistol Dance,, a great job by Michael, Aka Johnny Ringo,,who stated that he practiced that over 100 times before he got it right and still took 10 tries to get it right for this particular scene,❤ I absolutely love this movie video clip ❤, all are just great at their own own script! And all deserve an Oscar award!

Man this movie is AWESOME! I know Val Kilmer gets a lot of credit for his performance as Doc Holliday (and rightly so!), but I can't get over the fact that the guy playing Ike Clanton (Stephen Lang) was Stonewall Jackson in 'Gods and Generals'!
He was dang good in 'Gods and Generals' too I must say!
Doc's trolling is heart warming ^^
Dana Delaney raised the heat in the Saloon a few degrees by just watching the ''play of Doc and Ringo''with Wyatt sitting there ready to fire that shotgun into the outlaws .Ringo's life was only a matter of time after this moment.
