  • I love these videos. I see all this technology put to use in the final product but I've never seen anyone explaine the thought process in such an easy to understand method. It's like if you aren't a sound engineer you really don't understand what these guys are talking about. You just know whatever they did made the sound better. It's almost like your giving away away proprietary secrets, but your not. Your just explaining how a lot of this proprietary technology is implemented. And I'm absolutely fascinated by it. Thanks for the video. Keep making them.

    • I found out by myself how a loudspeaker works when I was four years old... It's really intuitive when you have a basic idea of magnetism and that a coil can be used as a variable magnet. Which my dad explained to me very early on. Of course the coil will be attracted or repelled by a magnet when you push current through it, and I figured that's how it makes sound. That sound comes from vibrating surfaces is something you just instinctively know. So loudspeaker design is something that is extremely easy to get into, but it's hard to master - things like complex impedance, phase, resonance, directivity, those aren't so easy to digest (even though it still isn't rocket science).

  • It was so cool to use the concept of a young person that likes going to concerts and enjoy music but never even thought about how it all works. I could tell that she took away something from this experience that she will never forget and may even be considered among her friends the sound guru. We all love music and some of us love good sounding music, unfortunately only a few of us can tell the difference. A few more visits with you, she will be among the few who knows the difference and wouldn't settle for anything less. We all are benefitting from your expertise.

  • I love how you used waves in a pool as analogy for how sound is air wiggling! You csn really understand how, if you make waves at one end of the pool, the waves can hit someone at rhe other end - but it doesn't mean the water is actually being moved away to the other end, it's just waving. Awesome video. Next, I'd like to understand how speaker cabinets work, and what design gets you better (or worse) sound!

  • I worked at a nightclub years ago, and it was awful, yes, they had lots of speakers, lots of amplifiers, lots of crossovers, equalisers etc They had three banks of six 18inch subwoofers, i think they were in bandpass style boxes, they had three mid and tweeter arrays hanging from the ceiling But the best sound was downstairs near the subwoofers I went into the amplifier room, and counted 30,000 watts of power output The problem was, they had an upstairs, and the tweeter/mid arrays were pointing outwards from the centre, and they were aimed straight at the mezzanines, so whej you were upstairs, all you could hear was deafening high pitch sounds They could have done with extra subwoofers upstairs to balance the sound Then they could have done with turning the overall volume down, as upstairs it seemed like they were running full volume, and it sounded horrible and distorted They had a few 6 inch monitor speakers around some balconies, and even they were running full volume, so bad, you could see sparks coming out the casings and the bass drivers were flashing from the amount of power they were forcing into them Absolutely horrible experience I got my own sound system at home, 4kw going through eight 15inch subwoofers in full range cabinets, with horn tweeters, i never run them full volume, and that sounds a hell of a lot better than that nightclub did, no distortion whatsoever

    • Bass always requires more power which is probably why it has longer range meaning it covers more distance.. As far as wattage is concerned, our teacher told us that a 100 watt amp is only twice as loud as a 10 watt amp, so basically the calculation is that if you want to double the volume/loudness, you have to multiply the wattage by 10 (not 2)

  • Two major aspects are never addressed by manufacturers: the clarity and intelligibility of high power bass. The quality of the result is ensured by separate transducers for the bass drum and the bass guitar, possibly for the low frequencies of the keyboards. No matter how good the research, this fundamental aspect is overlooked, while it makes all the difference between a clean sound and a crap sound.
