Prince Philip dies aged 99

By the Queen’s side for seven decades, Prince Philip has been around for as long as almost all of us can remember. Remarkably, he was the oldest-ever male member of the British royal family and the longest-serving consort in history.
And yet his life had begun in a very contemporary fashion - an infant refugee from the country of his birth, carried by boat across the Mediterranean. He was also the man who modernised the monarchy, encouraging interaction with ordinary people - an approach embraced by his grandsons. But throughout all those years, he told anyone who would listen that his central role was to support the Queen. And it was a mutual reliance. Elizabeth has described Philip as her "strength and stay" and said she and the country owed him a debt greater than he would ever claim "or we would ever know".
Jon Snow looks back now on the life and times of Philip Mountbatten.

  • Prince Philip was alive for 99 years, almost 100. You can only imagine all of the things he has seen, changes in the world, wars, etc. It is very sad when someone like that dies. It is like an old library that has collected many books over the years burning down.

  • You know what I admire about Prince Philip. That he, unlike lesser men, accepted that his wife was the more important figure. A lot of men cannot accept that their wife/girlfriend earn more money than then never mind being Queen. But he accepted his role with grace, humour and dignity. A great man and an example for all men.

    • @British Pride I disagree. A man who is confident in himself, knows himself, and respects his wife knows he is not diminished by her roles, responsibilities or achievements. He knows his self worth and the respect he gains from his wife because he doesnt have to diminish her to elevate himself. I for one respect him enormously for the role he has played and the work he has done, most of which has been done quietly and without fanfare. He had a very complicated life and great tragedy, he served this country actively in WW2, with his family on the other side, his family scattered and enormous personal loss. He stepped up to the plate to support his wife in her role and carve out his own place. He worked all his life in public service and did not retire until his 90s, putting duty before all else. In my estimation he deserves respect for his service both to the country and to his wife in her role as Queen and Head of State, and in her words, he helped her more than we will ever know.

    • @British Pride I can disagree as much as I like! There are small men who feel diminished by their partners successes, but there are plenty more who are not. Jealousy is a petty emotion, spite even more so. Women do best to avoid men who are petty and begrudge them successes, whether at work or at home, and should choose a man who will cheer her on, be proud of her and stick by her, just like she does for him. A team. A woman who doesn't support her partners successes is just as bad and I think men should avoid women who are petty and jealous of their achievements as well. Its miserable being in a relationship with someone who doesnt cheer you on and support you doing well and constantly undermines you, even though you support them.

    • @GeneralCurtis3LeMay I suggest people look that up for themselves. His sisters, at very young ages, were married off to German princes, some of whom were involved with the Nazis and some were just caught up just like every German was. When he had to make a call, he joined the British Navy and served Britain against the Nazis. I dont think you can doubt a man who joined up to fight against the side the rest of his family were associated with by marriage. No one is responsible for the actions of their relatives, they are only accountable for their own choices, and he chose to fight against them. He could have gone off to Monaco, Switzerland, Spain pr Portugal or the USA...but he didnt. He stayed and fought for this country.

      @shelleyphilcox4743@shelleyphilcox47433 жыл бұрын
    • @GeneralCurtis3LeMay No, the USA contributed to WW2, alongside many, many other countries who worked together to defeat the Nazis and the Japanese empire. The USA has indeed done extremely well and I have no desire to do anything except acknowledge that, even whilst the USA also needs to acknowledge historical events that are less than perfect in it's own very recent history. However, it's a complex picture and the USA, like nearly every other country, has been responsible for both bad and good in its history. In terms of Brexit, it would e interesting to see if the USA aims to join the EU, as you clearly think it such a shining beacon of marvellous ness, I cant imagine why the USA isnt clamouring to get in.

I love your adorable mother- in- law. We shared an August 4 birthday. Love you!
