Woodturning - The Result Will Surprise You!
I normally have a story or some inspiration to explain why I've made what I have, but in all honesty I don't with this one. I originally wanted to use the large piece of Ash to turn a natural edge bowl but because it started cracking I thought it was best to cut it up. While I was thinking about how to cut it up into blanks I thought about doing this.
Unfortunately a few bits went wrong during this make, one of which was the epoxy started to set quicker than anticipated, which is why it looked gloopy and thick in some of the epoxy pouring shots. Still I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, the Ash used in the piece looks awesome, you've got one piece with some olive grain and another with rippling.
The bowl has been sanded to 10000 grit and finished with Yorkshire grit.

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.
Harry, I predict that 100 years or so in the future, your creations will be selling to collectors for tens of thousands. That was just beautiful !!! :)
Thank you so much as always Amber! I really appreciate the comment and support!! Would you like me to do more like this, or stay more traditional with my woodturning? 😁👍

Thank you for using the push stick on the saw, makes me less nervous watching. The rest of the video is so relaxing, watching such a talented craftsmen is wonderful.
When you first got the casting out of the mold I automatically said "oh, that is beautiful!" (Out loud!! 😂🤣😂🤣 My cat looked at me weird 😹)....I knew whatever you made would be stunning....you did NOT disappoint!!
Excellent choice. That bowl is absolutely beautiful. Do it again with the rest of that piece only with Christmas colors.
Admittedly I wasn't a fan when I saw you arranging the pieces in the tub, it didn't look to have the right character/layout. The end result really did surprise me with how incredible it looked - the combination of the size & shape, the resin colors, and the finish all came together beautifully. I love that the live edges of the different chunks runs through the bowl, it's the kind of thing I'd look at for a while to catch all the details.
Totally agree with you! Loved the end result!!
An excellent, beautiful and stylish piece. Well done Harry 👏
Well, you've done it again Mr Smith! Amazing and beautiful art. Love each and every creation I watch on the channel! As always God bless you and yours and thanks again for everything you do! Lathe on Sir!

Thank you for your comment. I prefer to let the wood speak for itself and allow the tools to tell their own story as they make their changes. 🪵😃👍
once again, absolutely stunning work!

@@HarrySmithWoodturning A bit of each I think. I'm just in the process of adding more room to my workshop with, a 7' x 5' shed that will just house my lathe, grinder and thicknesser/planer👍

@@HarrySmithWoodturning I don't have a preference actually, I just like to watch and learn and occasionally take inspiration. Keep on doing what you love
That turned out to be very singular and unique. Beats doing it with machines rather than scraping by hand! It is very pretty. Do you sell your pieces?
Hi Harry I like the wood its got some great grain in it and I liked the colours of resin you used they go well together. I love the pattern the wood makes with the resin in the middle and on the sides and bottom of this piece. Congratulations on another masterpiece Harry I really like this piece it's magnificent and really cool well done. You are really a great craftsman, I hope I years to come your piece will be Saleing for lots of money. Thank you for a fabulous video from Amanda x

LOVE 😍😍😍
Does the resin penetrate the interior cracks in the wood? Hard to tell just by looking at the video. Interesting method.
That's a cool peace, where did you get you hole boring bits? I've the same chuck but haven't found any decent bits yet.
Very nice? What kind of resin did you use that doesn’t require a pressure pot?
Magnifico

@@HarrySmithWoodturning ja, es ist mal etwas anders als nur Holz 👍 vielleicht mal ein wenig mehr mit Farben spielen. Aber wirklich nur ein wenig, damit das Holz aber die Überhand behält.👍👍
I have always been told not to leave the bark on wood as good chance of delamination. I hope this does not happen to you. Might want to research for future work. Nice looking piece.
Great
What kind of resin did you use? Looked like no pressure pot due to the size, and also few if any visible bubbles.
Are you using a pressure pot to eliminate bubbles in the casting?? If not, what product are you using?
Thanks for watching Randy! Unfortunately my pressure pot is too small for that size bowl! To stop the two colours mixing too much I let the epoxy cure for a few hours. Would you like me to do more like this, or stay more traditional with my woodturning? 😁👍
I'm confused why didn't u turn the outside until all the wood was exposed was it cuz u had a special size or
This looks fab! Did you use a pressure pot to remove bubbles from the resin?

@@HarrySmithWoodturning I’ll take anything you put out! I’ve been turning for 6-8 months and I’m learning a lot from KZheadrs. I thought a pressure pot was a must for wood-resin combinations. I’m still developing a feel for turning and still having issues with catches and gouges. 😤 I’m slowly improving!

You did not take all the epoxy off the sides and bottom. The inside and outside are different colors😤🤕🥺... The bittom om, how could you leave it looking the tub it came out of? 🤯🤕🥺
i hate resin
IF.....you had used the high speed tools like the Carter "Osprey" or even the Easy Wood tools and slowed down a bit, you could have avoided the cracking on the interior of the bowl. I have always enjoyed your videos but this one was painful as I have done over40 bowls like it with good results. Sorry about the negative.
That terrible
Talking out your backside Pal. That's beautiful!
