  • Your videos sometimes bring back old memories! A little over 50 years ago my wife and I used to go to her folks' house for Sunday dinner, and after dinner I'd wade-fish the Tioughnioga River (upstate NY) behind their house for smallies and panfish. I was fishing a Panther Martin spinner on an ultralight with 4 lb test mono, and was catching lots of rock bass, smallies, and shiners, when on one cast retrieve stopped like I'd snagged on a big rock. Not a rock, but a 15 lb carp that had inhaled that spinner! I used to run with the drag set really light, and that fish just ran me back and forth in the short stretch of water he had to swim in, until he got tired and I managed to kick him out of the water onto a gravel bar in mid-stream. He had the spinner way back in his throat, but I managed to get it back, then kicked him back into the water. FIrst time I ever caught a carp on an artificial lure. I'm 81 now, and she and I still like to go fishing - I'm going to be fishing on the St Lawrence for a few days this week, land using a bunch of the things you've shown us on these videos! Thanks for putting out a quality production! We really appreciate it!

    • That's why it helps to have consistent spots where you don't have to move a lot to catch fish, bridges and points and coves can be really good places for that depending on time of year. I always carry like 3 tackle boxes with me and bring worms sometimes but still need to fill up the fourth box in my tackle bag.

    @C.Money.@C.Money. Жыл бұрын
    • That's really the key, reading the water and what you want to catch is often the difference. Fish aren't just "out there" randomly.

    • There is an old saying that 80% of the fish is in 20% of the water. That’s what they say and it’s been true for me on the water. I’ll add to that by saying you can measure yourself as an angler by how consistently you find the 20% of the water with 80% of fish and how well you fish the 80% of the water that only has 20% of the fish. That whole thing about “they weren’t biting that day” stops making sense when you look at it like that. Sure, you weren’t catching fish but if you had a pro angler in your boat at the same time fishing the same water as you, do you think they’ll get skunked? Will Bill Dance in his prime get skunked?

The funny part is, if you were fishing for Carp, you would catch, nothing but Crappie or other fish. lol! They say, that the wind pushes bait-fish up against the shore, hence you catching fish, along the shore, the wind is blowing towards. The knot on that package, is the same knot I use for all my tying. Very strong. Just make sure to wet the knot before you pull it tight. Reduces heat friction on the line, as you pull it tight.

  • Nice carp. Nice crappie. Great to see you on the water again Matt. A guy I see at times fishing for bass in Colorado has called you the Mr. Rogers of the upper Midwest angling scene! I gotta say you have a calming effect on me even when things don’t go perfect for you on the water. I like that. I think you are a great influence on catch and release and catch and keep fishing. I can’t catch carp on purpose, I always get them trying for smallmouth bass.

  • You are the best fish man on KZhead, you didn’t say too much fancy stuff but your technique is very practical.

  • Carp can sometimes save the day. Plus, few freshwater fish can match their fighting abilities on appropriate tackle. Great video. I found it late, but I'm not disappointed.

  • Nice touch on handling fish! You wet your measuring stick before putting the fish on it, very respectful. You haven't thrown a fish in, you release them slowly. I like your attitude towards nature. Great video!

  • I fished a lake adjacent to a Provincial Park in southern Ontario for a week each year for over 20 years. I was snorkeling one afternoon when I noticed dozens of Crappie about 15' down in the weeds right off our cabin. So I took a 4' trout rod out there with me and proceeded to catch about 10 of them before I got tired. I used little jig heads and 1" - 2" plastic minnows and grubs. Some days they wouldn't bite for anything. Other times they were jumping on the bait instantly. Some of them were huge too... like dinner plates! Once I mistakenly hooked a 25" pike... it darn near spooled my reel but I eventually got control of it and after swimming in to the beach I actually landed it; on 6lb Stren Magnathin line. I enjoy your channel very much; I watch everything you post!

  • Helpful tip. Keep the grubs in a ziploc bag with crushed garlin and veggie oil mix. Way better than any scent sold out there.

  • The walmart kit is year-round crappie slaying madness, just use good bobbers and jigheads. I wish OT rods and reels were as good as the plastics in that kit.
