Change oil every 6 months.
@Syst3M D3Cod3s water tends to mix with the oil over time so I recommend using cheap oil and change every 6 months.

I dunno if you had the 3800 V6 but that engine is even known in the Honda world as the best engine GM ever made 😂

yeah changing the oil every 6 months or 5k miles is better for their life span over the 10 k 1 year limit the dealers say to do it cause they just want your car worn out faster so they can sell you another simple

Bought a Grand Prix 2003 with 130k miles. I've watched so many car repair videos like Scotty's, and number one thing I've learned throughout the years is, your vehicle is one of your most important resources in life. I'm more than ever in keeping a vehicle maintained, reliable, ready to go, and never trying to put off needed maintenance for too long. I've changed my own transmission fluid, oil, coolant, brakes and rotors, electronic components, cosmetics, gaskets, thermostats, and other parts and now just know almost instinctively when certain things MUST be done and not have issues grow into huge problems

I changed the gas cap on my wife's 2000 Taurus wagon and the check engine light went out immediately. It had been lit for over a year. If you had an emissions inspection coming up, you might try a little Vaseline around the gas cap gasket; that might do it. --Old Guy
Regular maintenance is the key. I have a 2010 Honda Insight which I bought new. It now has 180,000 miles on it. I change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles , the oil every 6000 miles , the coolant every 3 years or so and the brake fluid every 3 years and the only problems the car has ever had is a tire pressure monitor sensor going bad and a fuse for the air conditioner blowing. Can’t get much better than that.

I’m up to 322k on my 2010 focus. Just took a 1300 mile round trip to Tennessee. Oil change 5-7k miles with walmart synthetic and mobile 1 filters.
Got 260k on a focus zero repairs so far. Had it since new great car 40mpg runs great. Tell everyone if it was a corolla would have 500k on it by now.

Those are great cars , 2010 not have the problematic dual-dry-clutch automatic. And you have the Duratec engine with metal timing chain , no VVT and you have port injection like mine. My 2002 Manual still runs great.

I’ve said it a thousand times. But I have a 2001 Tacoma with 430k. No major issues. Just regular maintenance and oil changes. Just love your Toyota.

That’s the best thing to do. I just did the same. Purchased several hundred in tools and did thousands of dollars of repairs and maintenance on my own cars. Tools pretty much paid for themselves 3 times in the last month.
Just make the wrenches and sockets are the best fit on the bolts break the bolts with wrenches break everything free first then take the bolts off so they don't fight you always KZhead it first so you have some sort of an idea what to do it's not easy but it is very rewarding good luck
Be ware, I’ve been working on stuff my whole life, and currently do hvac work, and working on cars is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It’s always that one little thing you forgot to do that comes to bite you 2,000 miles later

I wish I had someone like Scotty living closer to me. Mechanic’s in my area suck! Everyone of them keeps telling me I have to go to the dealership to get my problem fixed. They don’t deal with that problem.

I do as well,,trip A keeps track of liters of fuel per tank
They don't want them to last no money in it. I've been a fleet mechanic on semis for 10 years now. We had a volvo d12 engine with 2.2 million miles. Head was never removed. Injectors and turbo was the only major repairs. No reason why a car shouldn't be able to go a million miles without a rebuild. We have the technology to do it.
No reason? Have you seen the way most people drive? Have you seen the way most people maintain their cars? One in five Americans does the required, scheduled maintenance. That means 80%+ of the cars on the road are being abused and neglected.
I did the power steering fluid transfusion like 5x on my 2002 Focus just to be safe. It had some stop leak in it too. Never made noise but it's 21 yrs. old.

Hey Scotty. Seriously! I’ve had cars that I’ve run 200,000 , 300,000, and 400,000 miles. The secret? Just do the normal maintenance. I’ve been known to change oil at 3000 miles. I can feel it. The oil I’ve used? Mobile 1 , penzoil, and Quaker state. Please, keep your receipts! If you don’t believe me, we’ll fine!! Who cares!

In the northeast rust is the #1 car destroyer. An annual coating of Woolswax and/or Fluidfilm will stop the rust. I use the thicker Woolswax underneath & the thinner Fluidfilm inside the body panels.

My 2006 Tundra was getting a miss under load, but it had no codes. I replaced the spark plugs and the problem went away completely.
I been using that Lubegard synthetic power steering fluid in all my cars for years! Lubegard makes excellent fluids.
Well spoken Daniel Hernandez. I bought a 1979 VW Rabbit with 159000 miles on it sold it with 375000 miles on it. Ran like a top. Bought an 82 VW Scirocco with 120000 on it, sold it with 288000. It to ran like a top. From what I understand, both vehicles eventually succumbed to rust after 500,000 miles.

As a hobbyist, I got my first scan tool a few months ago to fix a problem with SAS. Best decision ever. It helped me to familiarize myself with all the different car systems, and I’m now much more confident after fixes when I can see live data.

A GM Buick lasting that long? OMG! The '69 Eldorado, '69 Lincoln Mk III, '65 Buick Riviera and '69 Z-28 Camaro were my favorite cars when I was a kid. My uncle knew Harley Earl in the 1930's when Harley was a coach builder in Pasadena, CA before becoming the head of design for GM.

I use the synthetic oil 5W30 from Costco. I don't go for fancy oil like Royal Purple because it's way too expensive and I know it's high performance and better than the one I use but it costs up to three times and I'm pretty sure it's not three times better. So I stick with the Costco synthetic oil and a bosh filter for synthetic oil every 4-5k miles. I also clean the throttle body which it's pretty easy, spray MAF sensor and replace air filter if needed. Thanks to Scotty, I do all of this myself not to save money but to make sure it gets the oil and parts I want and to make sure it's well done. I don't trust shops anymore.
A lot of the OTC medications like nasal spray I get at Costco are like 4-5x cheaper than even Walmart. The water pitcher filters I got were like 2.5x cheaper than even Walmart.
@@BigEightiesNewWave There is no such thing as "times cheaper." "Times" is a multiple. Unless you're multiplying by a fraction, multiplication makes the product LARGER! Get right by using %smaller or %cheaper. Of course, you'll need to know how to figure that correctly.

Walmart Super-Tech full-synthetic is good for me. I save my used oil as I have uses for it.
Buicks are great cars. My parents had several. They never really had any reliability issues. Minor stuff sometimes. My mom has a 2000 Buick Lesabre now with about 120,000 miles. Runs great, and she wants to keep it, but rust is having its way with it here in the northeast.

Hey Scotty!! I had a 2018 Honda Civic with the 1.5 L turbo. Within 1000 miles, the oil was dirty and it would be above the full line on the dipstick. I watched your videos on that subject. So I recently traded it in on a 2022 Honda Civic with the 2.0 L naturally aspirated engine. Oil looked brand new after the first thousand miles and it was right where it needed to be on the dipstick. Thanks!!!

Use real oil. Not that watered down 0W
I bought a Chevy pickup years ago, I put 500 miles on it, then changed the break-in oil, which they did recommend. I changed the oil myself aprox. Every 5,000 miles. Put over 300,000 miles on it the engine still runs. I would definitely change the oil if you haven't already. Get rid of the break-in oil.
You could’ve just switched to 0w-16 oil and it would have most likely fixed the oil dilution as Scotty has shown in pervious videos, but the 2.0l is a good choice either way
@@wiz4020 They don't use break-in oil, it's the exact same stuff you get from a 50 gallon drum at a jiffy lube.
My whip is a 2001 new beetle... 329,000 miles and counting.. just take good care of your car.. I’ve done all the work myself.. learned some things.. but absolutely worth it... 😁👍
@@hunterpinson807 that's miraculous, VW's of that vintage tend to have timing chain failure way before 300k miles, the parts are cheap plastic. He must have gotten a good one, maintenance is actually why Toyotas are considered so much more reliable than other cars. Toyota owners tend to be fanatical about maintenance where as most VW's are abused and even VW's maintenance requirements are suspect with 12k oil changes, etc
330,000 miles now... in the next couple months Bugous is getting new valve stem seals, a fresh head gasket and a good looking over of its guts.. doesn’t matter if it’s a vw or a Toyota (I had an 85 celica gts) or a garbage fiat (lol) if you are handy with tools and know how to read, you can make any car last.. just take care of it.. clean it, change oil, listen when it ticks or thumps and don’t ignore it..
Do your oil changes and maintenance regularly and on time, and don't beat on it when you are driving.
Right on the money I thank you so much I have a Honda and the power steering fluid looks like it's almost black I just bought it and I was wondering how do I get the old fluid out and flush it and you just told me how I thank you so much Scotty.
Use a Turkey Bastet with clear hose extension. Suction out what you can and refill it. Repeat every 2 yrs and you’ll be fine.

The plugs come with directions: exactly how Scotty did it. 80k is usually the change interval.

Instead paying £40 for a new gas cap from the dealer just replace the o-ring for 50p. Just measure the original o ring and get a new one.
Gross EVAP leaks can also be caused by a faulty EVAP Canister Purge Valve (common with Fords). They get stuck open and allow tank pressure to vent which will set the gross leak code. Replaced a lot of those over the years.

Timing chains are stretching will turn on lite soon time to trade. There is a filter in the return hose that is starting to plug. GM fluid is synthetic.

Torque wrench 🔧 is best BUT most v6 engines you can’t use it on rear plugs! Old school “feel” & experience when torquing plugs is necessary. Us old guys can feel when spark plug washer us compressed.

"Uncle Scotty!" You'd absolutely love my little Ford Ranger pickup truck, going on 215,000 miles and it looks and drives like it was new. I keep it oil sprayed so that the oxidation doesn't get to it! 😊
I had a '94 Ranger pickup. Went through 3 teenage boys, bought it from my neighbor with 99,600 miles, sold it with313,000 plus miles. Replaced starter, alternator, u joints, and the water pump just before I sold it to my son for his business. He sold it to one of his employees a couple of years later. It was still running when the employee moved to another state. It's amazing how long an automobile will last when you take care of it. Oh, by the way, my 2000 Freightliner is still going. Replaced one rearend this week, not bad considering it ran 2,142,000 plus miles and will be going back to work on Monday.

I believe 300,000 miles is possible on just about any decent car brand with routine maintenance and what I call " fluid watch" to catch any fluid leaks or low conditions quickly: air pressure, oil, tranny fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, etc. Basic knowledge of this is a must for any young driver especially.

My co-worker had 335,000 miles on his 2005 Nissan Altima automatic, without sticking any money into it, other than oil changes every 3000 miles and changing the transmission fluid every 50,000 miles.
Back when Nissan's were still built with quality parts. They went downhill after 2005.

I've got a 02 dodge ram 1500 truck 4.7 liter and it's got 397000 miles on it and still runs good I've always used mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w-30
Scotty, I have a 2000 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder. It has power steering. Can I use the Synthetic power steering fluid in the 2000 Camry? Also do they make Synthetic brake fluid? Would like to switch everything to Synthetic. I use synthetic oil already. Wishing they made synthetic coolant as well.

Why couldn't there be mechanics like you every where?! I youtube videos on the vehicle I'm driving and see what I can do myself. Anything else goes to the mechanics. But it's hard to find a good mechanic that is not going to take advantage of you. I have to take my brother with me to take my vehicle in. Smh.
Hey Scotty been using mostly Walmart Super tech full synthetic since I bought my 09 Mazda 5 in 2016 with 106,000 , definitely a daily driver with my courier job , I'm at 519,000 now !!! Hard telling when it's gonna die 😉😉, still getting mid to upper 30s mpg during the summer months , change oil as close as I can every 7000
