  • These gorillas need more outdoor green space and enrichment activities.

    @sassyt1545@sassyt154525 күн бұрын
    • They don’t need more outdoor green space. As you can see from this video, they spend a considerable amount of time lounging around - whether on the cement walkway, in the building alcove, or on varying levels of the jungle gym. As to enrichment activities, I agree it would be nice to see them receiving ice (the chimpanzees received it this past week while Annie and Ai looked on enviously) and perhaps some toys could be introduced and rotated - as they seem to really enjoy the odd day when a bucket is left behind or a burlap sack is in the recreation room. In the wild, gorillas spend a considerable amount of their waking hours hunting for food. They spend time daily grooming themselves. While mothers of infants spend some time caring for them, they’re not as helpless as human infants - and don’t require nearly as much attention. Meanwhile, the males occupy themselves staying on watch - as Shabani does - or infrequently defending the group. That’s what “enrichment” they have at their disposal in the wild - which is to say they don’t have (or need) much. The Shabani group has ropes, stairs, platforms, hammocks, tire swings, a bell, stairs, and tightropes - amongst other things - which they make some use of, but overall they are more interested in one another than they are with props. There is a saying about primates: Give a screwdriver to a gorilla and he will play with it for a bit then get bored and set it aside. Give one to a chimpanzee and he’ll stab his sibling with it. But give a screwdriver to an orangutan and he’ll figure out how to disassemble his cage and escape. Apart from highlighting the differing dispositions and intellects of the various species, it also points to their attention spans and what holds their interest. So while YOU may be bored watching the gorillas doing pretty much the same thing every day in the same spaces, you are not a gorilla - and shouldn’t assume they’re living a deprived existence.

    • @@JoeyBlogs007 Okie dokie, Joey, please tell us how their behavior differs from that of wild gorillas that indicates to you that they’re “bored.” Also, kindly tell us what it is that gorillas have in the wild that these gorillas don’t that prevents them from becoming similarly “bored.” Lastly, do advise what institution of higher learning you obtained your credentials as an animal behavioral analyst specializing in primates so that we can confirm you’re qualified to make such an assessment. I’ll be waiting.

  • At 3:56 Shabani tickles his son and Kiyomasa smiles. I find it fascinating to watch gorilla communications; the look, the pose, the hand gestures, a shake of the head… they seem to speak so clearly to each other in so much more than words like us humans do. When Annie is plotting a prank, you can just tell she rehearses the whole action in her head, particularly when she is targeting Nene. And the constant repositioning of bodies along the wall- sitting close to each other or moving away. I could watch them for ages. I wonder what they think of all their human spectators? ❤🦍

    • Hmmm, I think Kiyomasa DOES understand Shabani’s attitude towards him. Kiyo knows very well what irritates his father - and there are times he engages in the offensive behavior anyway. You may wonder how I know Kiyo isn’t as naïve and innocent as many people seem to think he is. Well, there is video footage of him taunting Shabani from outside while Shabani and the females were in the large recreation room. Kiyomasa clearly knew Shabani could see him, because he waited until Shabani walked past the window to drum, dance and antagonize his angry father - whom he was protected from by the glass separating them. Shabani will let pass one episode of impulsive acting out - but when Kiyomasa hits a female, or shows aggression towards Shabani, or behaves disrespectfully too often, or takes it upon himself to pretend he’s the dominant male - that’s when Shabani puts him in his place. Today, Kiyomasa was acting much less boisterous and obnoxious. He assumed submissive postures, didn’t drum, and wasn’t posing as the “dominant male.” Shabani sought to reward his good behavior with a happy round of play - signaling his pleasure that his Alpha status is recognized.

    • Sorry, I disagree…when zoos were bad ( I’m 70), that’s something to discuss historically. For everyone worried about animals in zoos..remember for most in captivity, there is nowhere safe to release them. They are in a breeding program as natural as humans can achieve, which I admit, depending on the country, isn’t always natural or beneficial to the troop. But instead of complaining about animals IN captivity, spend your energy fixing the poaching and habitat loss in the native areas this animal would and should be thriving in. The rangers do what they can to protect them but the demand for gorilla hands and heads (folk magic) and their bushmeat is really bad. It’s sickening. They are diminishing rapidly in the wild. Mostly due to humans. Surprise! The cousin to these gorillas are the mountain gorillas. There are two groups, totaling 1,063 individuals. Babies are born every four to five years because nature set up the mother to care for the baby until about 4 years old. So with that reproduction rate, it’s not looking good for the mountain gorillas. And they have to have a mountain habitat in Africa, so we can’t save their species like we can with lowland gorillas, like D’Jeeco’s family, or Shabani’s family, or Momotaro’s family. I understand your passion. Perhaps think about what is critical? The poaching and destruction of their habitat is something you can act on. Be active, research the truth, help support the rangers who try to keep gorillas from being killed for their heads and hands, or infants, and also their habitat from being destroyed by humans in Africa, there’s opportunities there! Help there if you love gorillas or any endangered Animals. Yes, with a capital A. ☮️💜🦍
