Matthew Kuiper: The History of Islamic Dawa/"Mission" from the Qur'an to Ahmed Deedat & Zakir Naik
In this video I chat with friend and professor Matthew Kuiper of Hope College. We discuss the history of Dawa, the missionary "call" to Islam, from its origins in the message of the Qur'an to modern movements that utilize advanced communication methods to reach millions of people. We discuss popular Dawa personalities like Dr. Zakir Naik and Sh. Ahmed Deedat as well as the relationship of Dawa to Christian missionary activity.
Dr. Kuiper obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in 2016 and is currently a professor of religion at Hope College. He is the author of two books on Dawa which can be found below.

Dittos to everything @alexandermccain7214 expressed in their comments below. I could not have said it better. I believe this channel does important and relevant work. And as someone who embraces both Islam and Roman Catholic Christianity my life has been enriched greatly by the contributions of your fellow scholars. Thank you and please continue!
Absolutely loved this episode, including all the references to Bangladesh, the cover photo of the book being taken by a Bangladeshi photographer, and the mention of the annual Ijtema that takes place here, second only to the Hajj in terms of congregation size.
I admit I clicked because of the Dutch last name.
Yours is spelled in an interesting way. 🤔 The original name was probably spelled with an e instead of an a, like Van der Klei/Kleij/Kley.
@AJansenNL probably decendant of dutch folks who moved to an English speaking country.
@@AJansenNLjust acquainted myself with a history of Dutch spelling and surnames. It’s pretty wild!
👏🙂 Very interesting. Great video.
I have to get the book
In sha Allah you both take your shahadah soon. There is no other compelling answer to existence. May Allah guide you. Ameen.
Perhaps they don't think Muhammad was God's prophet. After all, there is nothing in the Quran about existence which wasn't in the Bible hundreds or even thousands of years before.
إن شاء الله
Once you really study Islam you can never be part of it.
@@jma7600if really studies Islam you will leave Islam very quickly! All religions are man made garbage 🗑️
Religion doesn't offer any compelling answer either.
I read the Quran. It seems to me the Quran is asking different things of different categories of people. It calls people who don't follow a Divine scripture from God to come to what God has revealed. For people who do follow a Divine scripture, it asks them to reform amd rededicate themselves to their contract with God. Additionally, it asks all these people to support the cause of The Prophet Muhammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم divine mission to reform society towards a God centered world. They also have the right to Join the nation of Al-Islam. Where I disagree with most Muslims is that believing people who following other Divine scriptures have to choose to Join Al-Islam and not just support it. Allah knows best
You don’t disagree with most Muslims, it literally is the position of most Muslims.
47:59 The science of textual criticism Muslims know from the century after the Hijri And the learners of us are only interested in the notary only And the Gospel of Barnabas, I don't hear that anyone has ever used it in Da'wah before, and almost most Muslims don't know anything about it
I'd heard it. I even had a copy of the Gospel of Barnabas, printed by some da'wah organisation if I remember correctly. That was about 25-30 years ago.
David Wood makes mincemeat of Zakir Naik in his videos. There are higher quality Dawaists and lower ones too like Ali Dawah. More study of them is certainly necessary.
I studied these movements in grad school. My understanding is that Tablighi Jamaat IS connected to terrorism via overlap with the Taliban. Id also add that a lot of the Indian dawah, especially Deobabdi, is towards perceived wayward Muslims. The rationale revolves around the jahilyya label (against 'nominal' Muslims), facilitating takfir
Hi, With no disrespect, have you met anyone that is involved with tableegi jamat?
Even the most subdued Islamic sect has its militant brigade ready to “defend” the cause of their god.
Don’t even bother to meet any of these Muslims groups they are all brainwashed by this Arib ideology man made garbage 🗑️
Dawah as in giving dawah as in inviting people to Islam is not supported by the Quran, itself. I know Dawah Muslims interpret verses to claim the Quran tells Muslims to invite people to Islam, but other Muslims don't interpret those same verses the same. What? Muslims disagree. :-) Peace. Now, I'll watch the video.
Not true at all! The Quran talks to believers and non believers. So God would want you to market the book and the readers be believers and non believers. So Dawah is basically marketing.
@@aalileghari6195 Well, it's 100% true, but you can disagree. It's cool. Peace.
Any verse can be interpreted to imply anything. Such is the playability of the Quran in the hand of a good da’ee.
@@jma7600 "Any verse can be interpreted to imply anything" is not true.
So the prophet was calling people to dinner? 🤦 and he sent preachers to call people to a party? There is an Arabic saying which goes something like this: "if the speaker is mad, the listner should be sane".
Matthew had some academic rigour until he started using “Islamophobia” crapolog in his discussion
Ok, mate.
Matt used the term Islamophobia ONE time in the very beginning.
