Here’s something we all do everyday - brush our teeth.
And we’re not doing it right.
A beautiful smile is one of your most attractive traits. The one thing that can stop you from showing it? Unattractive teeth.
Keeping your teeth in top shape requires regular visits to the dentist. However - good dental hygiene starts at home. Brushing your teeth the right way is imperative to maintaining your gums and teeth.
Unless you’re a dentist - you probably haven’t heard most of these mistakes before. You may have decades of experience brushing teeth with no dental issues - but I’m willing to wager you are making at least one of these mistakes.

Pro Tip: Use Oral-B Super Floss. It comes in individual pre-cut floss strips and is comfortable, works with braces, and is more thorough that any other floss. Once I've tried this floss I've never gone back to traditional floss. Also, avoid floss picks because they don't bend and get down into the gums where needed most. Great tips in this video by the way.

Just went to the dentist today for the first time in about 10 years. Due to depression, I didn't take care of myself like I needed to. Found out I have 4 cavities and need 1 tooth extracted 😭 (possibly 2 if filling doesn't work out). I'm finally trying to get better and this video helps. A lot of the info here is different from what I was told at my last dentist. These tips don't seem so bad, just hope to make it a habit.
Hey, hope you are doing all right by now. Did you made any of these tips into a habit?
*Tips:* 1. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. 2. Brush your teeth for 2 minutes. 3. Rinse with mouthwash, not water. 4. Do not store your toothbrush in your bathroom. 5. Floss. 6. Brush/Clean your tongue. 7. Use only a Extra Soft or Soft-bristled toothbrush. 8. Brush in circles. 9. Brush at a 45° angle. 10. Change up your routine 11. Interesting points. Preventing faeces on your toothbrush is relatively easy: close the lid of your toilet before brushing! When you leave it open, it simply sprays parts of what is IN the toilet into the air. Heard about this a few years ago and have been diligently closing the lid ever since. It gives me a cleaner feel too! :)
i think what's important is always closing the lid before you flush the toilet. that's when you really fill the air with disgusting particles
I like having the toilet in a separate room, much better. Can't understand when people knock a separate room for the toilet into the bathroom, big mistake.

This guy is completely right! I visited my dentist and he told me exactly the same things! The only different thing he told me, was that we should brush our teeth for 4 minutes instead of 2
Please take my advice. DO NOT over brush, it will recede your gums. I just had a gum graft 3 days ago, and my receding gums were due to "brushing too hard."
What is gum graft...plz tell me plz?
@@keerthivasan9807 A gum graft is when the doctor either takes gum tissue from someone else (that's what he did for me), or takes some gum tissue from the roof of your mouth, and sews it on your gums around your teeth where the gums have receded. Receding gums can happen for a number of reasons, but mine happened because I was brushing too hard.

Wow. So many mistakes in that video. So many. Being a dentist myself, well, I should know. And let me say, it's VERY irresponsible to prompt people to do something that will lead to harm, just so that you can post a video. Wouldn't know where to start, except to agree that yes, a toothbrush should be changed about every 3 months (way sooner, if the bristles get damaged sooner due to excesive force during brushing), flossing is very important, tongue cleaning is helping eliminate pathogens from the oral cavity, a 45 degree angle is essential and a hard toothbrush can cause just as much damage as help clean. The rest of what you suggested? Well... 1.electric toothbrush So many reasons why an electric toothbrush should not be used over a regular one, unless there are specific reasons... An electric toothbrush, any electric toothbrush, unless used very carefully can cause severe damage to gums and dental tissue, way easier than a regular could. One should be taught how to use it and then be monitored until he does it correctly... not get one from a store's shelf and use it because it has a timer. 2. Timer Yes, it is better to brush for at least 2 mins, but that is because it takes that long if you brush correctly. Most toothpastes these days have fluoride in a form that is absorbed in about 1 minute. As far as ways to monitor how long you brush your teeth, a very easy way is to pick a song you like with a 2 minute duration an either play it or sing it in your head while brushing. More fun that a timer and easier, too. 3. Rinse with mouthwash? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?? Mouthwash shouldn't be used more that once a week, much less twice daily. Especially one with alcohol in it, like the one in the video. Using one often destroys the natural flora of the oral cavity and pathogens can (and do) find space to attach themselves and multiply without a regulating mechanism (that the destroyed natural flora should present). The only exception to not using a mouthwash are patients with periodontitis, for the duration of their treatment. 4. Routine Change your routine? REALLY? The direction are to actually create one... Most of the times someone brushes his teeth, he's tired or preoccupied, and brushing happens in autopilot. Literally. That's where a routine helps. It doesn't make people sloppy - a routine makes sure you never forget brushing a tooth or a tooth surface, or worse, a group of teeth areas. Your hand follows the routine without conscious thought and ALL your teeth are protected. 5. Toothbrush storage A toothbrush shouldn't be stored near the toilet (when flushing the toilet a spray is created in a sphere of 60cm around it, contaminating everything within that range... but the rest of the bathroom is safe). So if you put the toothbrush holder in a bigger distance than that, or in the storage place behind the bathroom mirror, it's safe. Having already talked about keeping it clean, but what's just as important is to make sure it is clean after toothbrushing - rinsed well, with no food or toothpaste residue within it's bristles. Then is should be allowed to dry. If it isn't completely dry the next time you brush your teeth, fungi will develop and it will no longer be sanitary enough. 6. Brushing teeth often It's actually proven that once a day could be enough, IF it is done perfectly, complete with flossing. The thing is, nobody is that good at it. There are ways to train one self, like using tablets that paint pink and/or blue the plaque remaining on tooth surfaces after brushing, showing you what areas you need to pay more attention to while brushing, but it's practically impossible to be perfect every time you brush. Hence the directive for twice daily. That being said, brushing more often than that is not considered bad. Brushing after every meal is ideal, actually, provided you have been taught how to brush correctly, in a non damaging way, don't do it with a hard toothbrush (better go with soft), don't use force (brush gently) and you don't use a whitening toothpaste. I've seen plenty of people brushing less than once a day with damaged gums AND tooth enamel due to excessive force, wrong type of toothbrush and wrong way of brushing. 7. Waiting after eating in order to brush And you have to wait those 30 minutes post-meal before brushing ONLY when eating/drinking something really acidic, like orange juice.
Vera Kaloumenou thanks
Should I rinse after brushing or leave it as is?

This was wonderful and very descriptive. I’ve visited the dentist today and I have a new cavity and my dentist also said I had so much tartar built up. The braces broke and caused a ton of pain, the RP Xpander didn't break my jaw and caused a lot of pain. The way to get around poop on your toothbrush is to close the toilet when you flush. People don't use the toilet lid like they're supposed to and when you don't close it, it sprays urine and feces into the air. So instead of storing your toothbrush in a completely different room, try taking to seconds to put the toilet seat down 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️ the lid is not for decoration
Yeah but take note it’s not foolproof as some of that spray still escapes as it’s not 100% sealed yah. Best is still to take the toothbrush in and out of the toilet or use a separate non WC wash basin to do your teeth. Having said that it’s still a good practice to shut the lid before each flush for general hygiene purposes.
@@17388 what? You just shut the lid before you flush. Or you can just keep your toothbrush in a cabinet
@@17388 You are definitely tripping lol

You missed another tip. I talked to my dentist about seeing a yellow tinge in my teeth, so i'm constantly brushing my teeth really hard for a very long time.Turns out that enamel has a natural yellow tinge to it. So the tip is to not think that if your teeth are not pearly white, like in tv adverts, that they're not clean
+munem939 good point there
+munem939 Your enamel doesn't have a yellow tinge too it, the dentin which is the layer below the enamel has a yellow tinge to it. Enamel is not completely opaque, but can be seen through. The reason your teeth are looking more yellow is BECAUSE of the scrubbing, you are wearing away your enamel and seeing more of the dentin.
+Samuel Wells it could have been due to poor brushing in earlier years.
You can use teeth whitening tooth paste to give yourself a more white look.

I keep my electric toothbrush charging station on a table in the hallway outside of my bathroom. This means it's still close to the bathroom (so I have no excuse for not brushing my teeth), but it's also away from all the nasty crap aerosol that you get from flushing the toilet and all the humidity/mold etc.
I keep mine in a cupboard lol
It doesn't matter. If there's minuscule fecal particles in the air then that means it's also on your skin, you're inhaling it, ingesting it all the time anyway. It's minuscule and harmless. There's so many "gross" things that we do this with all the time such as dead skin cells. We are literally breathing in dead skin cells or hair particles {especially if you have furry pets) all day long at home. No need to stress about that. Just replace your toothbrush every few months and you're fine.

A wisdom tooth cavity scare a year ago had me overbrushing. After that tooth was removed I changed my entire brushing routine. Now I floss first, rinse with peroxide to oxygenate under the gum line for those bacteria. Then I brush with the crest 3d white 2 step whitening kit for 2 minutes. Then i rinse mouthwash. Finally I brush a layer of sensodyne repair and protect for 20 seconds and spit without rinsing. Its a bit exessive, but my teeth are better and the morning breath and mask breath is kept to a minimum.
I have been keeping my brush in my room in a bag for the past year. I am glad i started doing that.

This is the best straightforward video I've ever seen. Thank you so much. You get an A+...wow what honest upfront knowledge...no fluff or bullshit served up. Thank you again.
Published peer reviewed research from 2016 ( I think from memory) shows that mistake #13 ( and a BIG one) : soft bristles with toothpaste damage teeth more than medium or hard brushes! This is because soft bristles distort more under the same load and therefore keep more toothpaste in contact with the teeth causing more abrasion. Best advice is to not brush with any toothpaste: after all, it’s the brush that cleans teeth. Brush, Floss, rinse: paste on toothpaste with your finger over all the teeth then spit and don’t rinse for the fluoride benefit. This way, teeth won’t get abraded. Look up “Relative Dentine Abrasivity “ : this ranks toothpastes in order of abrasiveness. You may be surprised
Love this man🖤
For those wondering about why there is feces on your toothbrush is because most people do not bring the lid down when they flush. When you flush the toilet you create a Vortex of air with everything inside of the toilet which of course will include feces urine and other things you may not have digested and those tiny little particles that Get separated by the Vortex of water or air whatever it is basically gets spread out all throughout the area where it's at which includes your toothbrush
Dude, Antonio, the trick you said with brushing at an angle has revolutionized my tooth health. I never had issues, but now my mouth feels clean for mpre than half the day, when before it used to only feel great before breakfast. I didn't even think that was possible lol

Thanks for this video Sir. 🥰
Several dentists I have spoken with have confirmed that you should floss before brushing to loosen anything stuck between and around the teeth.
Michael Sweeney Yes it’s true. I work in the field
Plus it's also common sense
Something important that wasn't mentioned: if your brush looks like the bottom one at 1:20 and you don't use it to scour floors, it's a good indicator you're brushing too hard. The damage this can do to your teeth is called toothbrush abrasion. It causes problems with gum damage and recession, tooth sensitivity, and scraping away at the enamel (the outer white part of the tooth). Use short, gentle brushing motions and brush for the right amount of time, at least two minutes.

Ive been following all of these since my mid 20's. Only thing is I avoid fluoride because I'm skeptical to its benefits. Especially since I haven't had a single cavity in nearly 20yrs. Ive also only go to the dentist once every 5yrs. I keep my toothbrush submerged in peroxide when not in use also. Thanks so much for this video I learned so much from you
Thank you, this video was so helpfull.
I came across this while looking up an ad I saw for “dentists say to do this one trick-to end bad breath forever”. So I’m not a guy, but your video was eye opening for me. I tend to brush and floss AT LEAST twice a day. And use h2o to rinse. I was only using mouthwash at night. I’m going to cut back to brushing and flossing twice a day, use mouthwash both morning AND night, and start using a tongue scraper. I am moving tooth brushes of everyone here to their bedrooms. Great info here, I’m sending this video to my friends and family and my HUSBAND, too, since he does most of the things wrong on this list. And doesn’t listen to me since he’s been cavity free for the last 10 years. He hasn’t been to the dentist once since we’ve been together, in almost 7 years. He says he hasn’t had any tooth pain or breakage for 10 years. Sad that he thinks that means he’s not had a cavity. But baby steps are a good start. Maybe you should change this to “12 things” and add “#12-Not seeing a dentist at the bare minimum of every 6 months or yearly”? Thanks for this video-I’m going to send him this link and get him to watch more of your videos!

No , you shouldn't do this because the water is washing off all the chemicals

u r on the fast track to DENTURES YUKKK
Well change your toothpaste
This video was a real eye-opener! In my case... - I rinse with water - Do not brush my tongue - Brushing too ofnen (sometimes even 4 times a day)! Thank you !!!!
Thanks for the tips👍🏻
Excellent advise thanks
I'm surprised at how many of the tips I knew. I will admit that I have regularly made some of these mistakes before but now that I know, I'll be sure to avoid them to brush my teeth properly.
My dental hygienist told me that we are not supposed to use mouthwash directly after brushing your teeth because the pH becomes too low and you are damaging the teeth enamel. If you want to use mouthwash, wait 30 minutes after brushing your teeth.
My dentist said don’t bother with mouthwash, just don’t wash out your mouth with water after you brush so you leave the toothpaste in your mouth
The one who made the product told me that people will do whatever the dentist says because they have no idea what the product does. How does their product really work? Only the one who made them knows. Dentist are just following what they are told yet they are not 100% sure since it changes from time to time :')
Doesn't work so well if you are about to go to bed right after brushing.Have to wake up after 30 minutes to use mouthwash. No thanks lol
Leaving the toothpaste in your mouth, which contains fluoride...will cause cancer. Fluoride=cancer
@@hectormorales6175 there's fluoride in water sooo... what's your point my guy. I doubt fluoride causes cancer
Thanks for the help
When you flush a toilet you get a mist that rises and falls, that's why there's a lid. But we don't always put the lid down before flushing
Who was actually looking at his shiny teeth while he was speaking? 👇🏾
How cool, it's been a super long, long time since I've made one of these mistakes. I feel proud! LOL. I learned a long time ago about the feces thing. The thing is and this is a gross fact but what happens when you flush a toilet is you get what's called a "toilet plume" basically all the crap and pee particles that get agitated during the flush is released into to air and can linger typically for 90 minutes or so which is why it's so important to use the lid! They can also travel quite far too.
Hey great video, I have a few questions, 1. I use the ultrasonic electric toothbrush with a carrying case, is it still safe to leave in the bathroom? 2. Does baking soda really help whiten your teeth? 3. I use the luelli teeth whitening gel, is it safe to put on your toothbrush vs using the mouth guard? (as toothpaste)
When using the floss sticks you are actually transferring bacteria from one tooth to the next since you're using the same piece over and over. Don't get me wrong, it's better than nothing, but regular floss is best. Crest Pro Glide is my personal favorite :D
