  • Fun fact: The ancestors of housecats in Northern Africa began to hang around grain storages to feed on pests and essentially domesticated themselves into barn cats. We eventually became fond of them because they weren’t as dangerous as their big cousins and the pest control was very useful

"Dogs actually love seeing you, cats just tolerate you" Uh no, cats love you all the same they just aren't dogs, and you're trying to read their behavior and treat them as dogs. Cats show their affection in more subtle ways and I guess if you don't know what those are it just comes off like you have a hateful little critter in your house.

  • Wonderful video! I grew up on a ranch in Alberta and yes we always had the Working Barn cats and then the house cats who slept in our bedrooms. You're right CATS are amazing creatures! Independent yet still Love attention and affection. They are BRILLIANT and will wait for hours to catch prey like your MAGGIE MAY was about to do. I took care of a feral colony here in Toronto and eventually domesticated 240 of them to be homed. Once we got them caught vaccinated and neutered they had a week to recover back at our place and once they came to and got use to food a bed and warm place to sleep without fear of the Coyote or owls to catch them. Only 4 choose to go back out into the wild. That was almost 20 years ago and I still have one of the 5 I kept. She looks like a Palace Cat or raccoon and was a the best Mommy cat I'd ever seen. So once I had taken all her friends she was easy to catch with a litter of 20. She has out lived the 4 kittens I had of hers. I love your Pride of Working cats and all the profiles you shared. Don't know if you already have any naturally growing on your property. But catnip is a great treat for them to have around to munch on. It's in the mint family so it grows around Southern Ontario. I have found it along the trails. I did see a slot for Catnip seeds at Canadian Tire seed display last year but it was empty. I dug up the small patch in the way of the massive construction happening in the lot near me. Thankfully it gave our Hawkeye one of Mommy cats kittens who would have been 18 last month. He got great joy out of going over to eat a few pieces of the catnip before he passed on New Year's Eve afternoon 2023. I was grateful I'd brought it home for them. He and his other siblings loved catnip. Mommy cat not at all. She is like a Margaret Thatcher type! Bwahahah.. Anyway I rattled on enough here. I really appreciate your video and did subscribe. My son sent me this video because he LOVES cats too. Hawkeye was his special buddy. We both still really miss Hawkeye our Ginger Boy! Teddy was his nickname! Okay I'm off. Looking forward to more of your Cat and Farm life videos! 🎉💞🐈 I

  • Glad to see that you regularly feed your barn cats. Regularly feeding helps keep them safe. Hunger and a lack of nearby prey can lead to them foraging farther and farther out, making them vulnerable to coyotes and other predators. With a full tummy, they will still hunt, but will stay closer to home. Cats will hunt to eat, but they also hunt just because they enjoy the thrill of the chase.

  • My family has never lived on farm, but we've been surrounded by farms so we've always found mousers necessary especially in the fall when rodents flee the harvested corn fields, although having them inside has caused issues for my parents. One of them caught a mouse and hopped into bed while my parents were trying to sleep to present it, but it wasn't dead and when she dropped it it immediately dove under the covers to disappear forever. One story from my childhood I remember is a calico we had that brought home a rabbit as big as she was, she had to beat up one of the male cats trying to take it from her, ran him up a tree and chased him out of the yard before she returned for her rabbit. I have one of our retired mousers living my apartment, he's preoccupied with resting his 14 year old hips on his fleecy blankets and heating pad, but he actually was a bit of a bad mouser, always brought up snakes, frogs, salamanders or just their tails more than any rodents. He still has his killer instinct though, loves pulling the tails off of his toy mice even though he no longer has any teeth due to age.

  • I think you may have blotted your copybook with Bubbles. Runts often have congenital heart troubles which adds to a nervous disposition, so they are easily scared and don’t forgive easily. If you have time, I recommend just sitting quietly with her every day, don’t move, don’t try to grab her, don’t look at her, just be totally still and non threatening, and eventually she will come to you. I know it works because I have a little black and white fluffy barn cat runt too!! I loved seeing the cats, you are doing a great job taking care of them and helping them live the best life a cat could have. Roaming all the space, expressing their natural instincts, but cared for and loved too. Great job! ❤❤❤

  • When we lived in Colorado we fostered for the local Humane Society a black cat female kitten who was rescued from a window well. She never did bond with us and she was very afraid of humans but loved our six cats. The Human Society decided she was going to be farmed out as a barn cat. Back in the day I worked on a farm and I know it depends on the farmer what kind of life barn cats have. This guy is very conscientious about providing the cats with a safe cat home. I worked on a farm where it was survival of the fittest cat in a cruel environment. We ended up adopting the kitten and she is still with us and still afraid of us but absolutely is in love with our cats. Now we live in Florida and she gets to hang out on the lanai all year round and cuddle up with her ginger male cat buddy and her long haired male black cat buddy -- all adopted.

  • You can't underestimate cats. They're just like their big cat cousins but smaller and way more comfortable around humans. The great thing about having a mature cat around a property is that they can take care of themselves as long as you provide a place to sleep and eat and be generally safe. Gotta give them some attention though, they're still domesticated and need the attention of humans to feel fully happy.

  • Hi there, Great job with the cats! Just wanted to mention something. When I saw the whiskas dry food, besides the coloring and the carbs, it is truly not a good choice for your beloved pets. Let me explain why. Cats cannot digest food with grain in it because they don't have the enzymes to break down the carbs. They will gain weight on grain food and could eventually get diabetes. I learned the hard way, and that's what happened to my cat. If you switch to grain-free food, this will help them tremendously!! If they continue to eat the mice and moles, they will get all the moisture and protein they need in their diets. I hope you find this helpful!! All the best!!

  • Good to see someone who realizes the value of cats as working animals like dogs. Cats were invaluable to early human farmers for their natural predatory instincts towards rodents, which are a major threat to grain supplies. Protecting your cats from rural predators is a wise idea. Sadly, many cat owners in rural, or rustic areas don't consider the safety of their cats.

When there is something he wants, his legs get longer and he goes after it, then he hits his switches and kneels it to go back under the barn door.
