Stranded in a Storm | Boat life takes a wild turn |
I cruise my Narrowboat back across the Manchester Ship Canal onto the River Weaver and hunker down to sit out the huge storm which is on it's way - Storm Kathleen.
I create a video diary each day as the storm gets worse with wind gusts of 50 MPH, breaking waves, followed by the River Weaver being issued with Flood warnings as the flow gets a bit scary. The Storm and strong winds put a halt to moving the boat as it is not safe to cruise being single-handed (a solo boater).
It can be quite frightening in situations like this.....but not for me as I absolutely buzzed and kept a video diary of the whole experience as I go mad from too much of my own company 🤣🤣🤣 - I hope you enjoy!

Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I'm Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK's Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy and the perfect First Mate. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Narrowboat Pirate aboard The Pirate Boat.

For my 66th birthday this year, I am leaving Brighton, going up the east coast of England, all around Scotland, down through the Lakes, down the Welsh Border, through Devon and home, sleeping in the back of my little car with my beloved dog. i'm setting sail on rubber tyres 🥰
Wow, that sounds fantastic! Have a fabulous journey .
Oh wow, that’s a proper adventure ❤️🏴☠️
Just go..... enjoy.....and have fun
Great inspiration 👍😊
Wish you well in your journey of a lifetime x
Heidi, I love that you never lose your humor even when the weather is awful! It makes me laugh. Inspiring.
Aww thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Bonny is so very bonnie and she's really taken to life on the boat, you're both so lucky to have found each other. Thankyou for sharing your life with us, you always put a smile on my face. 😊❤
Aww thanks ☺️
Absolutely!!!
The Narrowboat Pirate, You're the best! I subscribed because I love your content!
Wow, thanks! Very kind 😃🏴☠️❤️
The only thing on my bucket list is to buy a bucket. 😇
😂😂 don’t go kicking it, whatever you do!
Fab video. Some funny bits and you’re always happy regardless of what’s thrown your way. Brilliant 😊 think the odd tune now and again on the accordian would be a great addition 🎶🎹 stay safe and keep vlogging 🏴☠️
You are a trooper……the real thing and worth your weight in gold. Good on yer!!!
Aww thanks, I’ve broken the strap on it so need to get that fixed, it’s bleeding heavy 😂😂
Bonny is becoming a proper little canal boat dog 😊 great video, you are an inspiration, thanks for showing us your journey, despite the rain. Cheers!
Thanks so much! 😊
Cold weather, pyjamas, Netflix and a rum sounds like heaven to me. How cozy is that 🥂
I recently checked off a small bucket list item Heidi. I've lived 72 years 250 miles from what is considered by many to be the finest zoo in America, never been there. Spent a delightful 3 days exploring everything, stayed overnight in the "big city", had a ball.
Oh wow, that sounds wonderful 🏴☠️😃❤️
Accordions are so magical! Thanks for playing for us. I’m so glad you have Bonnie. I spend a lot of time on my own and would be lost without my little dog Dotty, my horses, parrots and chickens…They keep us going to be sure.
Oh Heidi I laughed heartily at your " as you can see its a beautiful day"🤣......regardless of everything you soldiered on to entertain us all......just loved the shots of the boats powering up the MSC 😍....Bonny's expressions make me chuckle ......thank you as always for sharing with us all......Take great care out there ,happy adventuring......Bucket list......just to get out on the waterways for a good long exploration.😁
😂😂😂 thank you 🏴☠️
There's a heavy flow joke you missed there 😁. Bonny has definitely improved, she used to bark her head off at the bigger dogs as well. Not kicking the bucket is the only thing on my list at the moment 😂. Thanks Heidi
😂😂 she is improving all the time
Heidi you never give in,you are an inspiration and a breath of fresh air my lass! Always brilliant narration and camera work... Loved it.💕✅👍
Wow, thank you! Such a lovely comment 🏴☠️❤️😃
It is great that you appreciate what is around you all created by God enjoy and be safe.
Hi Heidi, your strength of character shines through once again… there’s not many boaters I know who would attempt the M Ship canal let alone strong flowing rivers. My bucket list is “ I have a large kidney stone ‘staghorn’ in my right side, I’ve been waiting for over 6 months for treatment, it causes excruciating pain along with bleeding, my bucket list is to be pain free at locks “ it really hurts winding paddles”… great video, be safe!
Hi Heidi - bucket list. I want to go to Finland and see the northern lights. Im saving for a motorhome and a narrowboat! I need experience so am happy to volunteer as crew for you lol. I want to go to Ireland. If money was plentiful, Id like to get my pilots license. Hoping to do a history degree soon. Xx
My bucket list wish is for you to get that operation very quickly as I know the pain. I very much wish you well. 💕
@@paulinehiggins8239 wow.. that is so kind… please don’t waste your wish on me, I’ve lived with kidney stones on and off for 40 years, I’ve learnt to deal with the pain, it’s jus the bleeding that can get scary 👍🏻
Awww you guys are wonderful ❤️, that’s lovely Pauline …. And I also hope you are pain free soon dingnextstop …. And Jan the motorhome and Narrowboat are a great combo 😃🏴☠️❤️
@@dingnextstop It’s not wasted mate especially if it comes true. I know that pain. XXXX
Hi Heidi, I’m so sorry that weather has stopped play again, but you are shining all the way through the winds and rain of good ole Blighty! It was lovely to hear you play the accordion, we would love it if you played on your vlog more often, you are so gifted. My bucket list is enormous, so here are a few things from it: Spend a month or two in New Zealand and then Australia, swim in the sea with dolfins and whales, stand on the top of Mount Snowdon in Wales, spend a month or two in North and South Ireland drinking all the draught Guinness, and have a narrowboat holiday in Wales! There that is the some of the big ones on my bucket list. Have fun on the Weaver Heidi, lots of love to you and Bonnie. ❤x x❤
Wow wow wow 😃
Please play the accordion again 4 us
Heidi you are a trooper, the real thing and worth your weight in gold. Good on yer!!!
Thank you so much!
Bucket List #1 New Zealand (Middle Earth). #2 Hire a narrowboat and cruise the canals! Love the accordion playing, silly hat and all 😆! Don't blame you for staying put when it's scary windy or floody. Stay safe and warm and hope to see you in new environs soon. 😊
Thanks Debba and wow New Zealand - good luck ❤️
Just a quick Hello from wet and cold Northern New Jersey, USA. It seems that the weather is the where ever you go. Be well and stay safe. 😊
😂😂😂
Jersey girl here, transplanted to Phoenix AZ !
Thanks Heidi!! Thanks for having us, damm that must a been COLD!! Hope you and Bonnie are warm again! Keep well! 🙂
Howdy Heidi!! What is you say, "wetter than a mermaids foof?" To err is human, to arr is pirate!! Big bear hugs from Kenny in Ohio USA!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's not a bucket list item that's a fantasy 😂, good luck anyway 🤞
Good thing Bonny is around, at least you went out walking. Wind can be terrifying, lol you'll have to get the knitting out ha ha. Take care =-)
Knitting 😂😂
I enjoy losing myself in this channel. Heidi, you are a gem. It should be recommended to watch with a beverage (wink). Pubs look great too, wish I was near one.
Great video flower can't believe you've had bonny a year already take care xx😊
Not yet but almost 😂
Cheers 🥂.
Thanks so much Mark 😃🏴☠️❤️

Hiya Heidi and fellow accordionist; was chuffed to see you play your lovely red accordion. Would like a jam session some time. Thanks for another super vlog with you and Bonnie. arrr! 🏴☠️ from @pianomanjustie (KZhead)
I’m crap on it 😂😂
@@TheNarrowboatPirate My partner and I loved it :) 👍🎹🎵
Living on a narrowboat is on my bucket list and I love history so I want to start visiting more castles and other places around the UK instead of flying abroad like I use to. Learning what life was like before my time is fascinating, specially when it comes to using ideas/systems that we still use today even for different reasons. I enjoy your videos and the traditional style narrowboat, I do wonder if you ever thought about attempting to "sound proof" the engine room to reduce the noise when you need to run it and youre inside or visitors are inside chilling as you're navigating around.
I can’t as it’s an aircooled engine and needs the engine room to circulate…. It’s just part of having a traditional tug boat 😃🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate That is useful to know also makes a lot of sense, I do love seeing engine rooms. No idea why apart from its cool to see an engine that is not in a super cramped area to work on.
Thanks for going back onto the River Weaver. It was our favourite waterway when we lived on nb Epiphany. Thanks for the funnies too❤
I love it here 🏴☠️😃❤️
"Our good Captain is stranded on the Weaver. Send rum supplies quick, she has cabin fever!" Fab vlog Heidi, interesting to see the 'other side' of boat life when it's not all plain sailing. And your innuendos are still as cheeky as ever (make me chuckle every time 😂😂) FM Bonny looks like she's taking it all in her stride, protecting her Cap'n against the 'Big Dogs' which may try to board the Rum Wench! Keep ticking things off your bucket list and please keep entertaining us with your mental ramblings, you're hilarious! Stay safe and ramble on always 🏴☠️🌈 xx
😂😂 save them ditties as I may start up the back cabin again 😂
@@TheNarrowboatPirate 😂 please do, I have thousands more and I've missed your back cabin 😉🤣
Love you " Mental ramblings " Heidi . . . . Your words not mine. Something on my bucket list is to maybe get a tattoo done. Although I'm not sure if my daughter's will go much on their widowed dad having a tattoo. Have you ever travelled the Kennet & Avon ? Take care ~ Have fun Phil xx
Ahoy! Very brave and I hope it’s not too painful 😂 no I haven’t done the K&A, the furthest south I’ve been is the North Oxford … maybe one day 😃🏴☠️
Ahoy back Heidi ~ I normally do a couple of weeks a year on the K & A myself . Picking the narrowboat up near Devizes - so if you every fancy a crack at the Caen Hill flight ( both ways of course . . . . . up and down ) " Don't be rude " then give me a call. And don't fret I'm not a rum drinker so your stash will be safe aboard. Take care Heidi~ Hope the weather picks up for you and have a cracking weekend with Bonnie ☠️ Ps Your organ playing blooming marvellous . . . . Be wary of the cabin fever gal lol 😆 😂 xx
Bucket list item would have to be going to the UK, spending some time on a narrowboat, having a good explore and definitely doing a bit of mud larking if possible. Thanks for the video, that river flow was really fast. I’m glad that you were near family during this time. Take care and I’ll see you next time. Hugs to you and Bonny and my best to your Mum and Dad. xöx 🙂🐿🌈❤️ P.s I’m using “the force” to hopefully bring on that Springtime weather for you.
Please use a bit more force 😂😂 ive for fire lit 😂 thanks again for your lovely comment Eve 😂🌈🏴☠️

Fabulous 😃🏴☠️
that weather looks horrible! I am glad that you were hunkered down for the worst of it. Wishing you safe travels. Cheers 🍻 😃
Cheers 😃🏴☠️
Well after all that time stuck there I’d have cabin fever so badly I’d be able to play the squeeze box too. Darling little Bonny was just holding back with those big dogs protecting you, she was making sure those big scary dogs didn’t sneak up and hurt you. OMG she is so beautiful. Hope you can get going in the next few day, just whatever be careful. Take care and see you both soon. 💕
She is so wonderful 😃🏴☠️❤️ I’m back on the move again now, thankfully 🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate I envy you Heidi.
Does Bonny mind the rocking of the boat in all that wind? Our little Corgi does not mind snow or wind but gets very anxious when we have thunder and lightning.
She doesn’t mind at all 😂😂 she hates it raining and windy on a walk and always pulls back to the boat but inside she is happy as Larry 😂
A brave girl indeed.
It's still cold up here in Aberdeenshire. North winds and hail today. Your trip certainly had some beautiful countryside and having staff on the locks made it a lot easier for you to get through, but it was still a tough day. You certainly deserved your hot shower and bit of rum.
Cheers 😃🏴☠️
Well done Heidi you take care of your self look forward to all your blogs,,, I used to have a saying, It's colder than a penguins chuf, watching your blog reminded me of it 👍😂
😂😂 I may have to steal that one 😂😂
I can sympathise with you Heidi, we were in our motorhome on the north Cornwall coast during that storm and we had 60 mph winds for 24 hours 😲. I didn't end go to bed that night, it felt a little better to sit up with the lights on rather than lie down in the dark. I finally went to bed at 7.00am and slept until 11.30am. We then had 40+mph winds for 2 days, and again the following week.
Oh jeeze, yeah it was horrible haha .. I never thought much of the weather when I lived in a house but now I’m obsessed 😂😂 boats and vans feel it all
This was such a great adventure that I had eight beers delivered just to watch this weeks video.
😂😂 cheers ❤️
Looking forward to this week's video.
Thank you 😃🏴☠️❤️
Your adventures with Bonnie are inspiring my partner and myself to try our hand at narrow boating with our Frenchie, Buster. We just need to offload a few kids first. Because of these biological land anchors, we've decided to book a few river boat piloting courses and then to book a few boating holidays on a rental boat to get the taste and test the waters. Once the kids have flown the nest, we're upping sticks and settling on the canals. We hope to bump into you and Bonnie in a couple of years!
Biological land anchors 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@TheNarrowboatPirate you can have that one, I have many more names for them, I can tell thee!
Brill ! I loved that, " just trapped my nipple" hilarious 😂 You inspire me to get moving n do more cruising x
😂😂 hopefully see you in the cut soon xx
Hi hide another stunning video from you. The weather has been atrocious over the past few months.. unfortunately this is becoming the norm these days. I'm so glad to see that you are safe and well.. I see that your little dog bonny is enjoying her time on the canals. All I can say is that the weather will improve in the coming months.. hopefully. I can remember 1963 when the snow covered my boat I had to dig myself out of it. The canal was frozen solid.. It lasted for weeks .. people were becoming desperate for water and fuel.. When it finally started to thaw it was replaced with week upon week of heavy rain. The river weaver is always a dangerous place for narrow boats especially when you have a rising tide going against a flooding river current.. It can turn you around in the blink of an eye.if you are not don't have your wits about you. Anyway hide keep your self safe and well.
I'm looking forward to this trip. My trip over the link was a bit scary when the other narrowboat broke down, and I had to tow him against the outgoing tide Mrs. I did crap myself. It's so easy for a nice cruise to turn into a nightmare. That weaver is a lovely river. The weather has been total shit until now. See you soon Mrs. ❤
Oooh I’ll watch it later 😃🏴☠️❤️ I’m hoping to do it later this year 😃😃
Another fab video, love all your adventures, thinking of my bucket list, the biggest item on it is I want to sail across the Atlantic on the Queen Mary 2, the last ocean going liner in the world in service, it takes about a week I would fly one way and sail back, or if I am really lucky sail out and back! Chin chin with a Kraken x
Oh wow, that sounds epic 😃🏴☠️❤️
What weather. You've battled through and achieved sooo much. Very brave to do the ship canal in that awful weather. Bonnie is so cute. Such a good little girl and is so settled with you. A very lucky little girl. Take care xx
Thank you, you too 😃❤️🏴☠️
Love watching your videos! Buying a narrowboat and living on the cut is my No1 bucket list thing!! Working towards it and just needs the child to finish education etc and🤞🤞🤞 also some countries I really want to visit like India and Japan. One day hopefully
Wow amazing 😃🏴☠️
Hello Heidi, another great video. My bucket list has only one thing: circum navigation singlehanded on my 28foot sailboat. Next autum it will start.
Oh wow, that sounds amazing 😃🏴☠️❤️🏴☠️
Keep dancing in the rain H 👍.
Aww bless you, you really did get cabin fever, it worrying enough on the canals in a storm, with the boat banging against the mooring, but on the rivers you have to worry about level too and making sure the ropes are loose enough to allow the boat to raise, totally understand why you didn't want to leave her. Hopefully things have settled down now and you are on the move again. take care.
Thank you… I was back on the move in no time, thankfully 😃❤️🏴☠️
Lol, loved this one, Heidi! Cabin fever, going mad? You? Don’t be rude! Great to see Bonny has now settled into the boating life, she is so relaxed, even in a storm! Have a great week!❤🐕🏳️🌈📯🥃☕️💎

Bonny looks interested in EVERYTHING as if the weather's no problem! So cute.
She is always fascinated, she loves watching the world go by 😃🏴☠️
Hi To You And Bonny Clad You Got Back On The Weaver Ok And C Glad The Flood Went Down And Not Up Well Till Next Time Take care And Be safe
storm weather makes life worth living. lol. ah, it's so nice to be back on the water. I can feel the mist and wind through the screen. lol, lol, lol. lol, I even turn the heat up so I could miss the cold aspect of our travels today. 🤣😂🤣😁 said like a true captain. "go a little mad": funny even the duck is looking at the river like, yeah, not today.
Haha, thank you 🏴☠️😃
Hey Heidi Wow what awful weather!!! Think i would have been sea sick 😂 Just love you're vlogs, Bonnie is so adorable!! Bucket list??🤔🤔 To hire a narrow boat & have a go ourselves!! (Maybe in the good weather though ) 😂😂😍😍 Xx

Hi Heidi, you asked viewers for their BUCKET LIST before they leave this mortal coil, well my bucket list is going to be forfilled this December, I’m coming all the way from Western Australia to go to Lapland Finland where the Arctic Circle passes through a beautiful place called Rovaniemi and it just happens to be where Father Christmas leaves from 😀 unfortunately my husband can’t travel due to health problems so he’s given me his blessings to have this last trip adventure, not bad for a 76year young lady, do you think.
Oh wow!! How amazing - have a wonderful time and tell Father Christmas I have been a good girl this year 😂😂🏴☠️
Looks a bit rough over there! Nice to see your bellows out in this video! Always enjoy your great vlogs, Heidi. Stay safe. Fred, Ralph the lurcher and Kevin the cat in Spain.
Thank you! You too!
Heidi. I missed your last of your videos. I'll have to get caught up. I went to my friends funeral last week. He got a good send off. It's so good to see you braving the weather. I'd have been singing. Rum rum wonderful rum. There's nothing quite like it to warm up my tum. When it's raining and hailing I ain't complaining. So long as I'm topped up with boatloads of rum. 😂
That’s fab, save it incase I bring back the back cabin poems 😂😂
My husband write you a diddy! Heidi Dear Heidi has had to much Rum, Now it has landed her on her Bum. Dear little Bonny does not know what to do, so she sits beside her until she comes too! I am not a good poet, for this I do know but I love watching Heidi’s You Tube Show! From Bob and Michelle Ontario Canada 😊❤
Aww wonderful, please save it, incase I start doing the back cabin scenes again 😃❤️🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate thanks for the response! We hope to come to England one day, as hubby’s granddad Joe Hewer and my granddad Bill Cross came from England in 1912.. keep up the great videos 😁😁
At the age of 78, and with some heath issues, i think our bucket list is dead short. However, you might like to add one or two items to yours that we’ve already crossed off ours. Im thinking of the Bristol Channel from Bristol to Sharpness (with a pilot!), the Ribble Link, though it chucked it down all the time we were on the Lancaster, and finally the tidal Trent, which we’ve done many times
I’ve some saving up to do 😃
Hi Heidi and Bonny, what a time you’ve had riding out the storm. My list includes seeing the Falkirk Wheel hopefully going on in a boat, and driving an old Routemaster red bus!! Take care xx
Sounds great!
Great video Hiedi, and an important one as it shows that it's not always plain sailing on the boat. And im sure its not watching your videos its bloody hard work some days ,but mother nature is boss, stay safe Nick 🏴x
Cheers Nick 😃🏴☠️

Boy, you were really banging out the doubleentendres today. That combined with the farting just kills me. My bucket list has you racing the Sarinda from Ship Happens and the Flying Coney. My money would be on the Wench. Very interesting that you said you didn’t know who rescued who. I think you’re a great person very genuine and very honest. You and Bonny are a great team.
Aww thank you Charles ❤️🏴☠️😃
Great video showing the downside of boating. The only thing missing was a accordian section was a cameo on singing in the rain.
😂🎵
Another great vlog. That looks like proper Northern rain; the sort that no amount of clothing can stop, and it keeps going until it hits bone! I think that, after that, you needed a little coffee in a massive rum! If you had a wind turbine Storm Kathleen would probably have charged up your batteries in 5 minutes! Mind you, the noise it would have generated could have been annoying (and wind chimes would have been heard a mile away!). Take care, and safe cruising, both of you.
I would have took off 😂😂
What a hectic week you had weather been horrendous bonnie is so settled and glad you got her for company loved the vlog and the organ playing x
Thanks so much
My bucket list would include a cruise with you and bonnie
Bonny is adorable and has taken to life on a boat really well, one thing on my bucket list left to do travel behind a steam train

If I remember correctly from the foxes, The DA boat that you mentioned has steam powdered power steering. So be sure to check that out when you get close enough to her. 😃😃
Oh really, I can’t wait to see it if I’m still around 😃🏴☠️
Great to see you plain sailing no matter the weather ❤
Take care. You look like you are so cold! Brrr! Bonnie is really doing great! ❤

That storm looked awful. So much rain all winter and spring, roll on summer and let’s hope it’s a good one.X
Sounds completely miserable, being that cold. We experience that when skiing here in Colorado storms and all…just no risk of capsizing/sinking! Nothing like warm jammies and a hot drink. My bucket list would be to see the Kelpies by NB. Great vlog.
Good Morning from a Tess the pond.i have no words to say how perfectly wonderful every second of your vlog…BUT… you own me completely now as I can play the “squeeze”box. That yours is red has turned me green. My bucket lift …#1 to ride with you on the canals. Originally Welcl…rellies left for Novi the Boston. IMHO Not a great choice. Thank you so much for all the work you put in place to provide such an honest loving vlog. Give the pup a hug!

Bucket list? We've just retired and are going to tick one off our list next week- we've booked to go to a farm in the New Forest, help fire up a traction engine, then drive it (complete with trailer) to a pub for lunch, then back and help put her to bed for the night 😀 We've been on the Falkirk Wheel and visited the Kelpies- Anderton Boat lift of course onto the Weaver (and the Pontcysyllte aqueduct many times and the Harecastle Tunnel 50 plus years ago and since ), but envy your ship canal- maybe when we have a bit more time! Would love to go across the Wash and up the Thames as well.. need a boat we fully own first (bucket list again) Thanks for another great video
Wow, wonderful ❤️🏴☠️
Hi Heidi. Not to make little of the winds on the Weaver, but the first Winter I spent here in Oregon, in a 1972 trailer or camper, the winds came up to 120 MPH and blew the tin roof off my pump house taking the phone and power lines with it. Trees down like wheat. I was up at 3:00 AM nailing it back on and bending the nails over underneath! All part of the fun!
Oh jeeze
I know winds on a river or a canal can be a bit of a bugger when trying to move a boat. But I do smile when people talk about strong winds. I live on top of a hill and three miles in land down in Wales. Average wind speed is 40- 44 mph and in last weeks storm winds gusted 65 + mph. A comment was made to a neighbour about the wind " getting up a bit" . But as I said. It is all relative.... a 14 ton boat in anything over 30mph will wobble. My house with three foot thick walls will not ( or at least I hope it won't 😂) Now my bucket list 1 An extended trip to India. 2 A trip in a motor home around the uk 3 buy another boat and cruise the network for two or three years 1 won't happen 2 will happen 3 I hope it will But if I do these three things and it takes me 6 years that means I will be 70 with bugger all to dream about 😂😂😂 Don't do all the things on your list keep some to aim for Stay safe, drink rum & be happy.
Stay Safe On Those Water You & Bonnie 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🫂🫂
Thank you, you too 😃🏴☠️
Loved this vid Heidi, great to see a weather forced change to the routine! I will soon be on the canals and rivers so using your videos as instruction…. !!!!!!! Bucket list: winning lottery ticket or two!

Nice one Heidi as normal, we had a surge of 1.5m above the normal tide 5m, so the boat was so high we couldn't get of the boat and unfortunately a number of cottages were flooded too 😢 cabin fever also set in , but I managed to catch up on reading some good books, fortunately the cupboards were well stocked with food and the water tanks were OK, keep them coming 🎉🎉
