  • I've owned a later 451 model Smart diesel, I bought it as an ex demonstrator with just shy of 2000 miles on the clock, it's just turned 135000 miles, I get excellent fuel economy, it goes up and down the motorway every day, it has a bit of a knack to driving to not get a juddery gear change, they're not fast, they won't break any records but it's very cheap to run, it's surprisingly spacious, very practical and easy to park, especially where I live.

  • Small cars are really unappreciated these days. One of my vehicles is an R56 Mini Cooper and it's a blast to drive (and I'd really like a classic to match). Maybe that comes from growing up around small British cars, like my dad's MG Midget. It would probably be comical for someone your size to drive that one, but I think it's super cool.

    @IndianaTony@IndianaTony2 жыл бұрын
    • I tried sitting in an original Mini Cooper once, I didn't fit at all. Unfortunately for me my height is in my torso, not my legs, so I wasn't able to safely fit in one. I just learned recently I wouldn't fit in an Delorean either which was a car I was hoping to own some day.

    • @@RustyAutoholicGuy I had a chance to buy a "babied" vintage Jag-- one owner, who was also pedantic about upkeep. Just a gorgeous car-- omg! I took it out for a test drive & it was a beast! So fast & so smoooooth! But--- I kind of had to fold myself to get in (I'm also tall) & the top of my head nearly hit the roof lining when seated. Sigh...T'was not to be. I ended up with a Camry- :P

  • The engine is quite special that was used in these early smarts, small but it's amazingly durable and packs a punch in small size.

    • This is the diesel motor though, the gasoline one is much better imo.

      @mli3793@mli3793 Жыл бұрын
    • You are correct the original gasoline engine was a great engine.. it had a couple of minor design issues so it massively increases engine life to fit an oil cooler, and accept that it uses a bit of oil by design and pay attention to never even slightly over filling the oil level.. it’s an instant death sentence for the engine, there is a warning on the oil cap and in the manual. With careful attention to maintenance the original engines are very reliable, mostly problems come from the electronics due to failing solder joints made by early leadless solder.. actually easy to fix.

    • @@andrewstones2921 Oh no thank you for the tip! The service place that filled our car up before we bought it overfilled the oil so we have been driving around with the oil overfilled for weeks. I'll have to drain it then.

    • @@mli3793 it’s the older Mercedes’ based engine which says Mercedes on the top of the engine that is dangerous to overfill the oil, if you have the later Mitsubishi based engine then it’s not so serious. Many mechanics just ignore the clear warning on the oil cap.

  • This Albertan also owns a 2006 Smart Fortwo cdi and it's a great car for almost all weather and conditions as is actually a better highway cruiser than city car in a lot of ways... The only conditions I don't drive it in are heavy wind days and the occasional wet snow storms that stick like a Slurpee/Snowcone to everything because it's so lightweight it can't keep a grip on the road even with winter tires and 300 lbs of deadweight... Thankfully that's only like 3 days a year... ;-)

    • I'm not sure honestly, this is the First Smart Car I've ever owned. Just off the top of my head I would recommend check all the fluids, see how the oil looks, it will be dark because of the diesel fuel but check to see if it's at the correct level or not. Also on the test drive just make sure everything sounds good and works as it should. Does the engine rev with ease, does the transmission shift smoothly, do the brakes stop evenly. The only other thing I can think of is to bring an OBD-II scanner with you to check an codes that are on the ECU. I hope that helps!

  • Its the poor man's 3rd gen MR2. Both have automated manual trans, both have rear mid engines, both are available in hardtop and soft top, both are two seaters with no trunk. I'd see what the widest tires can be fit on it and see how close to a motorcycle it can get on an on ramp. Also, maybe a lift kit and a trailer hitch to add removable a cargo box. And if you fuck something up, nobody is going to road rage on a smart car.

He drove it for several years to commute and as parts chaser for his shop. I drove it a few times and it was kind of a little rocket. The only thing he had to do right away was replace the rear tires as they were bald! It would spin the rear tires easily when taking off..
