Brazil floods: Man narrowly avoids death after motorway bridge collapses

The death toll from floods and mudslides triggered by torrential storms in southern Brazil climbed to 39 on Friday, officials said, as they warned of worse to come.
In one video posted online, a motorway bridge in Santa Maria, southern Brazil, can be seen buckling in front of people’s eyes amid high flood waters on Tuesday.
One man who is just about to step onto the bridge narrowly avoids falling in after stepping back just in time.
As the rain kept beating down on Friday, rescuers in boats and planes searched for scores of people reported missing among the ruins of collapsed homes, bridges and roads.
Rising water levels in the state of Rio Grande do Sul were straining dams and threatening the metropolis of Porto Alegre with “unprecedented” flooding, authorities warned.

  • It's the second time I see Guaíba spelled wrong in English media. Guiaba sounds like Goiaba, the Portuguese word for Guava. Like many rivers and lakes in Brazil, the word is of tupi-guarani origin... gua-ybe, meaning "bay of all waters" (had to search etymology... like 99% of brazilians, I don´t understand tupi-guarani) It's pronounced like "gua-ih-bah". Stressed syllable being the "ih".

  • And Brazil is being led like a copycat monkey. Some guys with painted mouths and makeup always referring to other countries. The Brazilian water system is unique in terms of the number and length of rivers, it is larger than all the continents, just look at the cartography, if we deal with river water we need to study this, building dams just with monetary thought, well a hydroelectric plant had to be turned off in the Amazon because of drought, so at that moment it was worth less than a battery, so dams can disappear in seconds. Other countries did what they did to solve their problem. With so many dams, Brazil is full of dead rivers, life does not flow.
