Exploring Solsbury Hill Hillfort in Somerset that inspired Peter Gabriel to write the famous song "On Solsbury Hill" . The Hillfort dates back to 300 BC and holds a true wealth of history with various key moments such as a Saxon Battle ,walking and exploring this area was a true walk in history .
There is a mystery of King Arthur relating to the Battle of Baydon- any fact to him ever existing still elude any exploration of the area .

  • Hi James! I was the guy you ran into on the hill when you filmed this! 😀. It’s a fantastic place. I still haven’t gone to the ‘sister’ hill fort that faces it across the river but am hoping to this Summer.

  • Great video, I must admit that when I took my motorbike there to visit the hill fort was back in 94 and I got caught up in that protest. There were security types everywhere and they took my registration, much to my annoyance as I was only going there to see the hill fort, which unfortunately I never did see. However the battle of Mons Badonicus (Mount Badon) fought by the Brits against the Saxons could have been there, or Badbury Rings near Wimborne or even Lillington Castle near Swindon. The historians have never been really sure, but where ever it was fought it stopped there Saxon takeover of southern England for approx 60 years as the next battle took place in 577 AD. You can almost see a psychopathic warlord called Artoris ,The Bear, (Arthur) beating the Saxon hoards in about 415 AD.

  • Hi James, Just been watching Cadbury Hill and you posted this one. Both so green and fantastic views. Well worth making the effort searching out these places. I had to search out the track but I remembered it at once, a great piece of modern history. The original Genesis lineup included Chris Stewart on drums. He didn't last long in the group but has written several books on his life mainly about his life farming in the hills of Granada, not too far from me. Great video, well done!!

  • Nice video. I'm surprised you didn't include the labyrinth though; created to commemorate the troubles of the road protest or so I hear. If you go in the summer it's a great place to see and hear skylarks. Keep to the outer path though as they nest on the ground.

    • It's at the north west corner just before the side turns sharply eastward, on a flat area below the bank near what would have been the main gate. I've just checked and you can see it on Google Earth if you zoom in enough.@@jameswalksinhistory3848
