Hi James, lovely video, the fungus is Birch polypore is, as its name suggests, a bracket fungus that only grows on Birch trees. It is rounded, smooth and leathery white or pale brown in colour.
Thank you Bud that is interesting-Also thank you for watching 👍
It is amazing how a little bit of knowledge can open yours eyes to so much.
Aye James, I did enjoy watching :) Thank you for going there to do the vid, despite your knee pain; hope it's better now. For a while now I've been half thinking of getting up to the Penselwood area and doing a bit of an explore; about time I actually did lol
Glad you enjoyed it-This is not easy to find , worth going to the area -Have a great time-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history !
Might see you there!! Watch out for Cameron Mackintoshes henchmen, the fort is on his land and there is no public right of way.
Cheers, James. Thank you for bringing us along for a wonderful walk and a splash of history.
Glad you enjoyed it-Thank you for watching
Definitely a well chosen position for defense.
I totally agree with you the Norman's certainly knew how to defend and attack-Thank you for watching
Wow hidden ancient untouched monumental fort, now surrounded by the forestry commission great work , boy they plant a plenty !and a more peaceful time with the invaders being the new trees now surrounding the old ancient trees, got the exact fungus growing on my garden wall only no tree in sight there so shows it occurs while very wet after the insane rain running down the wall damp weather cause it to grow unsure there name of the fungus :which you have to treat the fungus until it’s gone on the oak tree with hydrogen peroxide spray version to save the tree folks if you have it on your old trees.
So true in your comment-Thank you for watching
Another great video! You’ve inspired me to visit these places which are right on my doorstep. Tom
You should-I am pleased this has inspired you this is my main objective of doing this for others to enjoy the areas-It is not about me but the history-Thank you for watching
You can also dry slices of the Polypore out and use to sharpen your knife, the funny collection of thin sticks on the branches early on in your video is a fungal infection commonly called Witches Broom. I like Motte and Bailey's, so a nice addition to your collection James. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the identification of the Fungi -Also the use for knife sharpening-A great visit Andy you should put on your list -Also thank you for watching
If you are ever in South Yorkshire you could look at Mexborough Castle (a simple Motte and Bailey where you can just about make out the structures) and then go 4 miles further towards Conisbrough to the Motte and Bailey Castle that is there. The stone Castle is still intact; English Heritage put a roof on the tower, which you can climb to the top and get wonderful panoramic views across the countryside. It’s a very early Norman keep, unusual because of its square buttresses. I believe it is the only one of its kind in the U.K. Later ones had curved buttresses. Look it up -you won’t be disappointed.
Sounds fantastic-I will visit-Thank you for watching and your great information
They are bracket fungi. They show that the tree is rotten inside . Loved your video
Thank you-Also thank you for watching
Thanks James, another great watch & listen. Appreciated. Regards
Glad you enjoyed this-Many thanks for watching
@@jameswalksinhistory3848Not an issue, it's valuable 'Content' to me. Look forward to future. Relax, best wishes sent.
What a lovely place to visit James. The fungus could be Artists Bracket on that tree. Hope your knee gets better soon
Thank you -I am lost with fungi -Knee is improving now after some medication-Thank you for watching
Wow, that's fascinating! Great history! Yes, you can just about make out the ditch. I've been to a few sites like this in the past.
Glad you enjoyed it-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history
Nice watching this beautiful video
Thank you I enjoy walking in these areas of our past history-Also thank you for watching
Hi motte means mound, these mounds or tumps litter britain im pretty sure romans, saxons and normans repurposed them as strongholds,if you look at silbury hill or marlborough mound and others all built by ancient man. There called burys, sommat to do with springs.whats the name of this bury.cheers
Thank you for watching -This Norman fort was after the Romans and to a certain extent in the period of the Saxon demise -So this was built by the Normans although with more ancient sites all over there is a great deal of re-use in various ways-Interesting
Thank you, another lovely video. I was surprised how small the motte was at the top. Not much room for all the people of the baily to assemble up there! Maybe it has worn away over time and was bigger then? (Love your choice of music too.)
I think you are correct there must have been a great deal of erosion in 900 odd years -Thank you for watching ( I try with the music Thank you -All that aside I enjoy going through the history of these areas )
very cool place wow
Thank you Daniel-This is a great place
Merci
Thank you
Another interesting walk James, thank you. Yes that bracket fungus is Birch Polypore, it's helpful if one cuts themselves as the underneath white bit can be cut into strip's and used as a plaster.
Thank you I have no idea with plants and fungi-Thank you for watching
Ia that on Sir Cameron Macintosh's land or is it public?
Public path at this point-Thank you for watching
