Gymnasts Try to Keep Up With Parkour Experts | SELF
The girls’ flip was pretty different. The guys always float when they jump, land, or roll. Gymnast go for hard, fast, powerful moves
yea it's unfortunate that this was constantly glanced over, as it is the most important element of parkour and none of them seemed to ever get it right. Always stiff landings that resulted in complete loss of all motion, and parkour without fluency of motion is just climbing. They could do a part two that only focuses on transitions between moves, in order to preserve momentum, because they all clearly struggled with it.
Daniel Kemnitz I think they’ll figure it out if they do some actual parkour for a short time. You can’t have those powerful landings without mats. It’ll destroy your ankles and knees. And if you don’t land, well you just wrecked your whole body. Also, you don’t do quick passes. Parkour is about persistence and stamina. They wear themselves out very quickly with these powerful movements. If they had to do a parkour race, they’d be exhausted in no time
@@Real_MisterSir That's because in gymnastics, it's all about the stick landing. A very different basic skill they learned early on so for them, landing that way is second nature. They don't have the luxury of rolling or moving freely after a landing since it would cost them tons of points and may lose medals/titles. I think if they've taken more lessons, the coaches would have done more to emphasize that as they would be moving onto real-world settings.
@@xchemicalXladybugx I think you bring up a good point about persistence and stamina. Gymnastics takes tons of stamina and power, but it's not the most cardio sport compared to say running, dancing, or figure skating. It seems like parkour with its emphasis on movement and motion would rely on conserving energy to last the distance. Gymnastics is a totally different sport in that respect.
I also noticed that the guys moved "smoother" in a way
I like how humble the girl are and how supportive the guys are. Good group of people. Two groups of skilled athletes just respecting each other. Sweet.

@@M00NL9GHT yeah, it's different so why try to make a case of it? The guys flows were clearly better for the parkour style.
@@mysonandme8424 yeah ofc they're better that's what they do. maybe what they're trying to say is, somehow the women were like trained even with no background so the points that they have are; swinging, standing in their own two feet when landing, not wobbling around, etc. But yeah, different things but somehow they meet at a middle point. But yeah it's not a competition

I like how the gymnasts smile while they're doing parkour. Its like another floor routine for them
@@Edd-zd5wb I mean, they all failed in doing parkour here as well. They just thought they did it. But parkour takes a lot of effort just to get into the basics. They didn't do a single exercise properly, they did it the "gymnast" way, but that is vastly different to the "parkour" way. The main difference is that the parkour style allows you to chain moves into succession and maintain momentum, while the gymnast way gives you the appearance of full control, but with absolutely no momentum transfer. So basically they just did gymnastics but with parkour exercises. They never did actual parkour. - and indeed, if they took it outdoors to the real world, the differences would make themselves much more obvious to them. Indoors it's easy to get lulled into believing you're doing it well, when in fact you are completing the task but also at the same time you're doing it wrong.

This isn't parkour, they just showing them necessary skills in a control environment which is basically a routine they set up.

It's so rare to get to see people with different (but complimentary) skillsets show off their knowledge, and support others in exploring. Usually it just goes one way (older instructing younger or men instructing women). I love how everyone is so respectful and supportive.
I was instructed by a woman in my gymnastics class when I was younger! UwU Trust me, this is the normal thing because in a gym ladies are more skilled than the men in certain areas, and vice versa. For example, guys are great at things requiring upper body strength (ie rings, pommel horse), and women are great at things requiring lower body strength (ie tumbling, balance beam). So a teacher or instructor should be good at what they are instructing. ☺️👍 Also women tend to have a higher center of gravity, so that does help a little bit with tumbling.

Can we just talk for a second about how these men were so supportive and protective of these women. Absolutely chivalrous to the tenth degree. Arms out, waiting to ensure their safety, I mean, that was so heartwarming. I truly think it was amazing to see. Both groups could experience new things in a completely safe environment. Men could be expressive and women could be dangerous in a safe environment. May all of them NEVER CHANGE
They’re so ridiculously overprotective it stressed me out. Especially with the bars thing. Like the women did great and they were “I got you I got you” with their arms all around them. How can you be confident and focus with that?
@@l.olivia865 Yeah idk. Looked like they were hoping to cop a feel or something. obv I have no idea how dangerous a screw up could be though.
@La Austin Totally could be. I don't mean to accuse. It just looked a little odd to me that's all
@La Austin I understood it more like they are all parkour instructors and they are probably used to newbies letting go before time or getting hurt so they just prepare themselves to help them out or catch them. To them the girls were newbies at parkour and treated them as such to prevent any accident.
Remember that these guys are used to instructing kids. It's just second nature to look out for the people doing it for the first time, regardless of their skills in other areas.
I'm reading through all the comments and their replies. It's kind of upsetting how some people don't realize that the gymnasts actually did well for their first time doing parkour, and vice versa, the men did well in gymnastics. The moves they performed were not perfect, which is obvious enough. The gymnasts were stiff doing parkour because that's how they were trained. To stick the landing. The parkour instructors were loose in their landings because, you guessed it, they were instructed to be ready to move. It is hard to break habit.
yeah ikr people forget that even if they have trained for a similar skill doesn't mean that their first time will be flawless
They were amazing. I do dance so sometimes people ask me to show them something and to be honest: most people have no idea what their body is actually doing. All of them did great
Also women tend to have longer legs and shorter torsos, proportion wise, so when they were jumping over the box and being asked to tuck their legs through their arms that would be a lot more difficult than for a man. Men tend to have shorter legs and longer torsos. So a lot of moves are based on body dynamics of the sexes.
@@aleksandra2549 I saw that on the other video. It's just different movement systems
What comments you were reading. They did it pretty well. And to my taste gimnastic girls did it better than the boya.

I think one of the biggest differences I noticed between the traceurs and the gymnasts was how they landed everything. In Gymnastics, landings are a major component that have just as much importance as the routine and need to be hit with strength and intensity. Parkour landings, while they do need to be solid for precision landings, are more about being light on your feet so you can have options over where to go next. It's much more fluid and opportunistic rather than the final impact. I really liked this video.
I liked how everytime the girls would stick a landing they'd go into ''gymnast mode''...

I love how KZhead recommend the most unusual videos. I would have never searched for this but it was interesting.
watched both this video and the one where the gymnasts did the parkour. Was very impressed with everyone in both videos. There was mutual respect between all the participants and a fair bit of "out of the comfort zone" for everyone, but nobody slacked off, they tried everything and did their absolute best. Really enjoyed both videos.
It really was great to see. Everyone had fun while at the same time taking it seriously (trying to do it correctly, even for example when the guys were trying the more flamboyant gymnastics flourishes), so much mutual respect and humility, not only between gymnasts and parkour(... ists?) but within the groups (gymnasts were encouraging each other, parkour guys were encouraging each other in the other vid). And the admiration for each other's disciplines. This vid and it's partner vid were both fun, interesting, and showed the best of human nature and physical ability. Glad it was recommended 😎
Gymnasts in particular have a very strong discipline. You don't get very far in that sport by slacking off and not being very committed. It's one of the most demanding sports, and there's a lot of pressure on each individual athlete. They have to find their own motivation. So I'm not at all surprised.

Well you see doing parkour in real environment is always a risk.one wrong move and you can lose your life, thus they are used to being a bit careful
They're sports instructors. They have to be on the lookout for anything that may happen. That floor is concrete, and should you fall and hit your head, it will hurt bad. They've instructed people for a long time now, and them worrying about stuff is something like a second nature. Besides, during the precision landings, two of the gymnasts looked like they didn't have a steady balance and were about to fall. It's completely reasonable to worry about stuff.

YESSSS
I feel like all the videos should be dual in that way, once in their environment and half switched.
Not equitable. Parkour is about adapting to variables and gymnastics is about rigid control. Of course the Parkour guys are not going to follow classic form easily, they weren't trained that way. I had the same thought about really top notch gymnasts-they will automatically point their toes and stick as rigid a landing as possible because after doing it that way so long with such high stakes it's muscle memory. They would struggle hard with Parkour. All kudos to these ladies, though, they did well.
They’d fail. Miserably.
The gymnasts are used to element, hold, element, hold. The parkourers are controlled flow.
Very much true. Gymnastics are very choreographed and regimented each element in its place and time, Parkour is free flowing and loose
@@catsi563 I agree, however, most parkour is very choreographed as well. It's extremely rare for a traceur to legitimately train with no prior knowledge to the terrain ahead and all the obstacles within it. Most of us look around the area, check the dangers of the place (unstable walls, loose bricks, shaky hand rails, etc), then we come up with a line (a line or a run, is a short sequence of obstacle transversing that's been premeditated and planned out, kind of like an obstacle course). After the line has been thought of, we do each step of the line individually (if it's difficult or scary anyways, if it's easy then we'll go right away). Once feeling comfortable with every step of the run, we commit. We may fail sometimes, but we don't stop until we complete the run perfectly, usually anyways.
@@prefix253 I disagree slightly. theres a difference between a choreographed routine like gymnastics and Parkour where sure I grant you they might study the terrain but when the time comes to actually run they tend to wing it on the fly. Still I do agree that most traceurs get to know the terrain really well ahead of time.
@@prefix253 This, very much! The reason why there's less traceurs getting hurt in parkour than football players in football is because we prepare our runs by trying out separate sections at a time and we also know and test our own and the surface's boundaries before doing the entire run.
@@catsi563 No, I'm telling you, as a traceur myself, we hardly ever wing it on the fly. Everyone in my community comes up with a line, and everyone even on KZhead does the same thing. Check out the big parkour channels on KZhead, such as Storror, Team Farang, Tempest Freerunning, Motus Projects, Sqvadron, Mareo Gang, etc. They all do the same thing that I've said. Sure there's some cases where we "go with the flow', but the majority of the time, we flow through a run we've already thought of and practiced numerous times.
I absolutely ADORE this group, they're so supportive and loving. And their personalities go really well together
Lmao when they were swinging on the bar it was funny how they were spotting them even though they’ve been doing uneven bars for as long as the guys have been doing parkour
You're right they've been doing the bar for a long time, but not landing like that. They almost fell a few times. It was a weird combination of trivial with a very foreign dismount. I imagine it's just their routine for instructing new people. They probably also have to help new people with the swing too, but they were practically in the way for these ladies.
Zraknul lol definitely
Its still uncharted territory for them. The girls are use to bars that are smaller and bend. These are still metal bars with almost no give at all.
Even professionals need a spotter... it is not disrespect to their skills but a precaution... it is better to be safe than sorry... their bodies are everything to them so a simple injury will affect their career whether delaying their practice time or even worse...
Metal bar, no flex, wood bar, lot o flex. It's different for sure lol
For having a last name like danger, that dude's voice is super soothing
Exactly hahaha
Both groups were so humble and gracious towards each other which probably made for a really great learning environment. The ladies were ideal students (open to learning and trying everything) and the gentlemen were wonderful teachers, who were very generous with their knowledge and encouragement.
they are so focussed on the girls not failing - it is very charming
I like how they like tried to catch them even though they weren’t falling lol
this also shows how incredibly strong gymnasts are bc some people dont appreciate it
what do you mean? gymnasts are always known for their strength and always appreciated. for me, the parkour people are always underappreciated for their strength.
Inquisitve m I mean both views are true but I think people that do parkour project a stronger image to people because they do it in an uncontrolled and sometime extreme environment which make people think that it requires greater strength Meanwhile gymnast are mostly known for swinging on a bar, jumping on a beam and dancing. It’s not really a matter of what’s harder (both are hard in different ways) but what projects an image of strength. Graceful rarely translate to strong to the masses, while extreme sports do
zoë EXACTLY! These bros thought they were just some dainty little ladies, nah they were showin those boys up👏👏
BS, anyone who has done high school PT has a bit of experience with it and what strength it takes, ESPECIALLY if you can make it look graceful. No one who has watched Olympic gymnastics has missed the muscle development on female gymnasts. And these guys never disparaged the gymnasts, they were very encouraging and appreciative of the progress they made.
Barbara Danley to be clear, I said being graceful does not translate to the masses as hard or strong, NOT that being graceful is an easy thing. I’m pretty sure that for all sports, if you’re not a fan, the masses will only look at things superficially. Doesn’t matter if you tried it at PE, the first image it projects is that gymnastics is an indoor sport, and majority of the people in it are women.
love how the guys were so professional and non judgemental
There was nothing to judge, the gymnasts were as good as them.
They're probably used to seeing 20 and 30 year olds completely out of shape, who try out parkour for the first time. I really think they were impressed by how fast these girls learned these moves, and it's obviously expected that they were not gonna master it on their first day.
@@AlexandreRodrigues-mv5cl I think more 10 year old kids that think they can do a backflip flat on their first day 😂😂
@@atanasangeliev I wasnt saying there was anything to judge. I was saying the way that they spoke was very respectful none the less. Jeeze i should just never comment anything because theres always one person criticizing what i say no matter what and taking it wrong. Simply tried to give my support ay
@@earthandfire4840 You should always comment if you have something to say, even if people don't share your opinion. But that's not the case here. I absolutely agree with what you said but it sounded like you find it surprising, as if they are meeting inferior athletes. Anyway the internet is full of misunderstandings, don't hesitate to clear them and voice your thoughts, and be nice. Or don't, I cannot tell you what to do. Have a nice day :)
Gray Tshirt is the best in all
Omg I literally just watched your videos like a week ago noice
i love how they are so patient and gentle with the girls 🥺
0:02 Mike: *lands on bar* Girls: 👁️👄👁️
😂😂😂😂😂
When he did that girls be like: HoW tHe HeCk!?
Lol that was me to
Mike won the girls just with this one smooth move. The reaction was priceless.
Found the incel
Parkour is like street gymnastics?😂
Parkour is to gymnastics like graffiti is to art
@@samanthakittle i like that
Omg lol
@@samanthakittle Maybe you should say painting instead of art because art is a more broad term that encompasses grafitti. I like that analogy though.
Yeah!
After watching both videos I feel that both groups have almost the same difficulties, even though they are prepared to learn them quickly. Gymnastics are more rigid and controlled to make precise movements, while parkours are a little bit looser and more resilient to make precise landings. I think both sports are amazing. And I loved the fact that they choose different groups and genders and how both have the same capabilities and difficulties when experiencing different zones of knowledge and skills. Love how they perform the same movements but by different means, and how their brains make an automatic correction of their moves even when they want to do it differently. Amazing.
"It was fun to watch them like explore the environment and kind of do it the way they think they should do it instead of the way we're telling them to do it. Because essentially that's what parkour is." I loved what he has said here. Perfect!
Upper body strength. Yeah, I don't have that.
I have something called no body strength, i think im on a whole different league
@@derpzking1833 Anti-lats
DerpzKing I think a lot of it is more momentum and maintaining balance temporarily for most of it
I have inner thigh strength lol. Bareback riding thank you.
This feels like a bunch of adults got together to play like children.
daddyrichten ok?
We are sorry that you view strength, flexibility, control, balance and mobility training such as this childish. You might prefer to spend an hour on a treadmill or lifting weights. We prefer to continue doing things that regular people can’t even do.
All Kosmic agreed mate.
daddyrichten right!? Not enough war going on in the western world today!! We need more war so young people don’t think that exercise should be fun!!
Thomas Estwick It actually is EXACTLY like childsplay lol I just wish I was though as a kod that those things are real sports! I was good at anything you‘d use in gymnastics or circus as a kid but only cause we did ball sports alone pretty much in elementary school I though where I was good at there was no „real sport“ that would translate to it :( Anyway I am super glad at least as an adult I got into circus training like bet te r later than never and it really does feel like still playing! Like they say „you don‘t stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing“
This highlighted the difference between the rigid discipline that’s gymnastics and the more freestyle parkour. Perfect.
This is awesome! Love how the men are concerned for their safety. A gymnast being injured would be awful.
The speed at which Ayana flipped herself for her websters, holy crap!
I really want to see the other way around.
Parkour experts have left the chat.
I don't think they fit into skin tight leotard, that's gonna be biggest challenges.
Ashley C YAAAS! Because the parkour bros would fail😂
Exactly
The other way around is simply impossible....
I’m in love with the blonde gymnast. I love how she has this tiny demure demeanor when talking. Then when performing she’s a power house!
I come back to rewatch this video every once in a while. I love both sports and the athletes in this video were talented and respectful. What a beautiful representation of the sport. This has to be one of my favourite videos on this channel.
All the girls are so pretty and have perfect skin, what kind of sorcery 😭
Sport player need to keep a strict hygiene with no alcohol or cig or anything, and also fondation is not recommended when you sweat. I guess that's why, their skins are in perfect health.
Good health and physicality cant relate
Diet and exercise.
MyDogIsYoshi ha trust me you need to do more than that
@@jacasteasers That's how I got clear skin. I went to the US military for a bit. All my acne dissipated and my skin started to glow. When I went back to civilization, I got back to eating junk food. I drank less water. I never really had an acne problem, but there was a notable difference between my before and afters.
Jesse's voice is so soothing, he's giving some serious Bob Ross vibes
tracirai made me want to eat glass
tracirai he just sounds like a dude
He sounds like he has had a serious brain injury or he's on the spectrum.
Not wishing to be rude but I found his voice so incredibly boring it was hard listening to the intro; as interesting as the actual information was.
I'm like 90% sure he has a german accent going on there and that's why he sounds a bit weird. Let's be honest here, 'Jesse Danger' sounds completely made up
I'm just amazed at how much momentum the gymnasts can build up in two swings - especially the one in white
Record: a 19 minute YT video and me smiling every and each minute.
This video just called me unfit for 19:04 minutes straight...
_Same!_
Boomer
name checks out.
🤣
@Aisha Hassanthat's literally a joke but suit yourself i guess
This is a cooler version of “ballet vs hip hop choreo”. Someone make a rom com movie out of this idea!
😅🙌
Step Up: Parkour
Neeeedddddd
It's already a rom com
@@timowthie for real? What's it called?

I loved watching these humble and gracious interactions. It put a smile on my face.
