Synchronized Divers Try To Keep Up With Cheerleaders | SELF

The shoe is on the other foot! We challenged a group of synchronized divers to try to keep up with skilled cheerleaders. Olivia, Monique, and Joey train to complete three acrobatic cheer challenges and put them together into one synchronized routine. Will Olivia adjust to wearing shoes while performing? Can Joey get used to landing on his hands? Does Monique have the balance to be hoisted into the air by her diving partners? These amazing athletes work together to prove they can adapt to new techniques and try to keep up with their talented cheerleading coaches.

Also, as a dancer I've always found that trying/doing things that are similar yet very different helps to learn new ways of balance, coordination, strength and flexibility - I'm sure they've all come away with a better understanding of their muscles and ways to utilise what they learned during cheerleading to get stronger at their dives. • Something that I don't think people are taking into account is that all three of the divers are Olympic (or near Olympic quality) athletes that specialize in body motion, timing, and placement. There are tiers to everything, and these are elite, world class athletes. They're probably in at least the top 100 to 1,000 people in the world at what they do (I didn't look up rankings). Of course they're going to pick up a somewhat similar sport very, very quickly. More quickly than the cheerleaders. Joey made the Olympics. That makes him a top 10-30 diver in the USA full stop. It's not a surprise that he could just do the movements quite well his first time. Cheerleading is not an Olympic sport, and diving would be pretty foreign to them, so it's not surprising that they fared less well doing dives than the divers did doing gymnastics/cheerleading. To put it another way, the divers have been to the Olympics, or close to it. The cheerleaders wouldn't be remotely close to qualifying for Olympic Gymnastics. It's not surprising that the divers would do so well considering where they are in the world of athletics by comparison. Anyway, this was a highly entertaining and informative series.

  • I feel like it would’ve been easier for them to learn the jumps if she gave them counts. But I’m kind of excited for them lol

  • Divers, welcome to the world of knee dislocations lmao. I am a now retired gymnast and cheerleader. Never tried diving but now I definitely want to! That is one thing that must be nice about the water, drowning risk aside. That's one thing giving the cheerleaders an advantage to the water. Once you master the floor and specifically tackle the fear of potential injury you really have endless opportunities in the water.
