Synchronized Divers Try To Keep Up With Cheerleaders | SELF
The shoe is on the other foot! We challenged a group of synchronized divers to try to keep up with skilled cheerleaders. Olivia, Monique, and Joey train to complete three acrobatic cheer challenges and put them together into one synchronized routine. Will Olivia adjust to wearing shoes while performing? Can Joey get used to landing on his hands? Does Monique have the balance to be hoisted into the air by her diving partners? These amazing athletes work together to prove they can adapt to new techniques and try to keep up with their talented cheerleading coaches.

Synchronized Divers Try To Keep Up With Cheerleaders | SELF
Joey is such a natural at cheerleading! I guess his little practice routine at 11 years old really paid off!
And his personality is so bubbly and he is so charming, perfect for cheerdancers/leaders. Actually, the young ladies too.

YO HOW DID THEY MANAGE TO TUMBLE SO EFFORTLESSLY????
Dry land practicing
Air awareness. You’d be shocked how much air awareness and muscle memory can help.
tumbling is just diving on the ground 🤷♀️
RIGHT
my dive team practiced tumbling on tramp/mats to help us improve strength and coordination and such, it’s likely if they’ve been diving for that long hat they’ve done it at least a couple times
the fact they did a back handspring with barely any training is amazing- and they did it almost perfectly.
Divers usually do some gymnastics training, so have those basics
@@maddiem3942 they probably had some basic training so already had backhandsprings. I think Tom Daley did a video with Nile Wilson saying this, and a girl I did cheer with learned her tumbling because she did diving
One of the girls said she was happy they helped her get her back handspring “back” so they weren’t necessary 100% fresh 😂
I have a wrist that is kinda messed up, I feel like if I tried to do one my wrist would give up and I'd go down.
Jesus loves you
That one diver dude should start cheerleading he’s goated WHY SO MANY LIKES- thanks though lol
Omg yeah!

I agree

The diver that competes for the Philippines has such strong beautiful tumbling!!
Agreed!
She did say she likes backward rotations so maybe that helps!
Jesus loves you.
@@daughteroftheking994 thank you!
Yeah. She's awesome
Tall diver guy was smiling the whole time just loving it
Jesus loves you.
He must've grown up in the south and not been allowed lmao poor dude. He loved this so much
Joey's smile throughout this video is evidence he was living his best life. ❤️
Jesus loves you.
@@daughteroftheking994 im sure
I agree! I think he’d do well in, and thoroughly enjoy, competitive cheer!
I love how the cheerleader teachers were all so clear in their directions and corrections and very supportive :)
Jesus loves you.
@@daughteroftheking994 amen❤️✝️☺️
His inner cheerleader was having the time of his life! He's good! the blonde diver should keep her diving up tho lol
i'm so happy for him
They were both unbelievable!!
I couldn't stop smiling he's a national treasure
I feel like the blond girl did really good too though
3:09 - 4:00 tho😂😭
this was so much fun you really see that they are embarrassed and a little nervous but they always find a certain appreciation for another sport since they all just love sport! and that makes it just so enjoyable, I was clapping along every time they managed to do another challenge!
Jesus loves you.
4:00 yeah, joeys got the technique. his jumps were really clean!
Jesus loves you.
Joey looks like he already cheers lol
Jesus loves you.
Whoever picked the swimmers needs an award because they made this look easy! They all did great, I was pleasantly surprised. Awesome job to the cheerleaders and the divers
Jesus loves you.
The shorter diving girl when she was doing the first flips was amazing. She looked like she could keep going and going.
I'm sure that man (Joey?) is an excellent diver but he low key may have missed his calling by not pursing cheerleadering. He seems like a natural and he also just seems to be having a great time in general.
Joey is such a joy to watch 😭😭 I love that he got to live out his childhood memory in a routine and learn more! Everybody did awesome. Great job!
The one guy really embraced his inner cheerleader. He killed it!
DJ seems like a rockstar coach and spotter!
The way they tumbled so effortlessly! I mean I know they do a lot of the same elements and have great body awareness but dangggggg
Joey is a JOY to watch...He fit the squad perfectly...!!! All of them are doing a good job of course they have a solid background ..so no surprise
Amazing! They are naturals. Great tumbling especially. They picked up so quickly. I loved Joey's jumps. With a little more practice he could link all the movements together more fluidly and would look amazing. I also think Monique has a cheer body, and she has good form!
Jesus loves you.
@@daughteroftheking994 he's not sure bout you tho 😬
Are you kidding!?!! The divers KILTED IT. My little cheerleader heart was so full! 🥰
I’m so glad Joey got to live his Bring it On fantasy. They all did so well
Olivia is a little scared which makes sense but she did amazing! Monique did those spins like she was spirituality on another place and she came back when she landed. And Joey was just fully enjoying himself lmao THE END ROUTINE THO THEY DID AMAZING
Joey's jumps were incredibly beautiful for someone who has never done them! Also, wasn't Hayley on Smoed???
yes she was
Jesus loves you.
I was scrolling through the comments getting more stressed every second that noone seemed to recognize her, thank you!
maccifyme Same omg i totally thought i was just crazy and they looked rlly similar
I was so happy to see her still cheering!!
That routine at the end was actually amazing!! I am so IMPRESSED by everyone!
Joey really has a lot of power in his jumps. He's also having the time of his life in the air. He nailed the tumbling. Joey should think about going into cheerleading.
They all did so well! And their tumbling was very good. Also all of the cheerleaders were really great teachers and I think that showed in how they broke each skill down and really explained everything to the divers.
Jesus loves you..
17:09 he could 100% do a tuck or layout. He has so much power he could make it back around.
This was so wholesome to watch! Also, as a dancer I've always found that trying/doing things that are similar yet very different helps to learn new ways of balance, coordination, strength and flexibility - I'm sure they've all come away with a better understanding of their muscles and ways to utilise what they learned during cheerleading to get stronger at their dives. So great to watch - loved it!
Jesus loves you.
@@daughteroftheking994 huh
I love how they put the divers in size order 😭💕 also, Monique is SO powerful and explosive! She is built for cheer or gymnastics!
They all have great backhand springs, omg! Especially Joey!
I can't, Joey is too cute. Just actual sincere smiling while doing crazy stunts cos he's excited about it 😭
4:00 Joey's jumps and form were GORGEOUS 😍
This is such a great combo of sports for this series. Just the perfect amount of similarities and differences between the sports to make it challenging but still set them up for success.
Oh my gosh! They did incredible! I was a gymnast for over 10 years, and to see them pick up on this within a day was amazing. Not to make gymnastics or cheerleading sound easy (obviously these people have trained during their lives for similar things), but amazing 👏🏼
Lol I'm a gymnast, seeing the cheer and diving technique is so strange. Diving is way closer to gymnastics technique
Agreed. Except their tuck much tighter (more close to an inbar skill than a back tuck so to say) and so is their tucks. But I think it’s because they have more time in the air and must have tight cores.
Jesus loves you.
Cheer is way closer to gymnastics than diving is (just my opinion)
@@lilycaramel5307 no lol
@@mybaelamI’m a cheerleader and an advanced gymnast trust me there a lot more similar than some people think
Having seen the diving video first, it's incredible to see the change in DJ has he passes into coach mode 🤩 he looks like a great coach!
I did cheer and gymnastics briefly as a kid and i remember having so much fun learning flips, the trampoline was always my favorite. I feel like i’d be wayyy more scared trying these again as an adult with very long acrylic nails 😂
Pretty sure you wouldn't be allowed to have long acrylic nails in a cheer/gymnastics gym. Pretty sure they could poke holes or at the very least just be a liability risk
The Filopina had sooo much power. She would make a great tumbler
As someone who used to cheer they did amazing!! I remember being a base and throwing people was so much fun! I also remember getting stepped on plenty of times too bc they lost their footing lol. Thats what happens when your flyers are younger tho, they dont mean to hurt you and Id much rather them crush my face with their shoe than scare them while theyre in the air.
My toxic trait is thinking I can do all of these skills with absolutely not training in any sport lmao
This was the best group of athletes in one of these ever! The male diver is super flexible. Impressive!
10:08 the moment she realizes it's easier than she thought it would be for her
Monique has the build for cheer and Joey just seems to have so much joy for it!!!
Wow! They’re all great in their own ways and also fast learners. I really like that they’re friends with each other. That makes it easier for them to be able to trust one another.
me, a non-athletic person watching this: 👁👄👁
I am so shocked and impressed at the diver's lack of fear and amazing execution of these skills!
I did not expect the swimmers to be so good at floor flips but I guess it makes sense they would be trained to do that since the flip into the water. It was funny how the guy was like “I’ll see how it goes” and then nails it surprising every time 😂🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This was so wholesome to watch, I was smiling the whole time. I found it so interesting how they were amazing in the air and performing the tumblings and flips but when it came to landing they fell most of the time. Which when I thought about made sense since they don't really land in water haha They did the routine so well. I'm so happy for them!
This was awesome!!! The divers did a great job especially when they took the time to trust each other as a whole instead of relying on individuality like what Olivia said!
As a former cheerleader watching their tumbling I am so impressed. I guess I shouldn't be surprised but still... wow!
the guy diver has beautiful skills especially the tumbling
I LIKED HOW HAYLEY USED THE SHOE FOR A EXAMPLE!
I love this series! It is great to see the intense athletic ability in such a varied range of body types.
I have ZERO athletic ability but i LOVE watching these!
I’m impressed! Great job guys! I’d like to say that the guy who got “caught” doing cheer has some really great jumps! He should give cheer a serious try. I think he would kill it!💖 Everyone did a really great job, once again! Thanks for sharing!🙏
This was so fun to watch! Those synchro divers did so good! Their final routine was really wonderful!
the dude was having the time of his life
Joey loves this opportunity so much I love it
The encouragement of the coaches was a joy to see as well as the effort of the divers. I am in awe.
Homeboy is GOOD! All 3 are very body aware and able to take direction into their bodies quickly!
The short one had sooo much power 😍😍she would be an amazing tumbler
Don't the divers do "dry" sessions doing flips etc?
i think so
normally on trampolines or off a diving board into a foam pit, that’s why the were able to do the tumbling skills so easily! but they definitely aren’t used to this kind of tumbling, so this was super impressive on how skilled they are
Yes, but with a pit and/or a belt system.
It’s is called dry land and we use trampolines or what we call “dry-boards” They are just diving boards but you land in a pit! In that way it’s very different because on the ground there is a lot less bounce
It’s a lot different. Especially tumbling on a floor with shoes. Not feeling the floor can make suck a difference. But they do similar skills so they have muscle memory (except they pike MUCH tighter and do not cowboy their tucks. Not to mention they have incredible air awareness to be able to synchronize.
I have done cheer fora year and I just learnt how to do a round off back hanspring layout so the fact that they did it right away is amazing
I love this so much, I miss cheer so much. The divers did so great!
I am shocked at how quickly the divers learned everything - it was so cool. The coaches are excellent too - they explain everything clearly and are very encouraging!
This is the best series on KZhead! This one was especially good 🏆
I am always so impressed by how the experts are able to verbalize the skills they are performing! These are quick movements that are second nature! They can break it down so scientifically!
The divers did such a great job! They are so good in every discipline... This show how athletic they are! A normal person would never do such good tumbling..
Oh my gawd. I was so geeked watching this. It must have been so much more fun for them to do it. They had great teachers as well.
Monique’s round off looks as if she’d done gymnastics for 10 years already! :)
I NEED Joey to get in a squad NOW!!!! His spirit was so happy 🥰
im convinced.. he was meant to be a cheerleader 😂😂
Wow Monique's baskets are so good her cradle was the best among the 3 of them.
So wholesome!! I guess the US diving team and the Filipino diving team just gained their own cheerleaders
I've never taken glasses of gymnastics, cheer, diving, none of that. ALL of mine is SELF TAUGHT. But I like the way they explain how to do the stunts. Makes me feel like I can do it. 😊😊
The initial instructing cheerleader is such a good and kind teacher.
The one guy really embraced his inner cheerleader. He rocked it!
Joeys toe touch was so good omg
Joey smile itself through the video made it worth it 😊
I love how for the cheerleaders the water was scary and for the divers the floor was scary xD
The first round of teaching was really good, if you ever had experience with any of these moves before. Rather than teach 2 moves at once, I would've broken it down to each individual move, nail them, THEN put them together. Much like the last teacher did. I could definitely tell he had lots of teaching experience.
Omg this is one of the best collabs that I have seen in this channel. The energy, explanation, fun that both drivers and cheerleader had was so organic and beautiful to see that I really loved it. I just couldn't help but smile skfkskkfkdkd
I missed this series!!! Keep more episodes coming please 🤗
That dude is huge and still springs up like a leopard. So impressive!
Something that I don't think people are taking into account is that all three of the divers are Olympic (or near Olympic quality) athletes that specialize in body motion, timing, and placement. There are tiers to everything, and these are elite, world class athletes. They're probably in at least the top 100 to 1,000 people in the world at what they do (I didn't look up rankings). Of course they're going to pick up a somewhat similar sport very, very quickly. More quickly than the cheerleaders. Joey made the Olympics. That makes him a top 10-30 diver in the USA full stop. It's not a surprise that he could just do the movements quite well his first time. Cheerleading is not an Olympic sport, and diving would be pretty foreign to them, so it's not surprising that they fared less well doing dives than the divers did doing gymnastics/cheerleading. To put it another way, the divers have been to the Olympics, or close to it. The cheerleaders wouldn't be remotely close to qualifying for Olympic Gymnastics. It's not surprising that the divers would do so well considering where they are in the world of athletics by comparison. Anyway, this was a highly entertaining and informative series.
I would love to see the cheerleaders do some diving. 💗
They killed that
I feel like it would’ve been easier for them to learn the jumps if she gave them counts. But I’m kind of excited for them lol
Wow we love Joey, I went to high school with him and he’s really everything ❤️❤️
@myan daisy, so we have his ig?😏
So much respect for both sports. The powers strength, trust & teamwork of cheer!! The patience and precision of diving. So talented!
When the guy diver is a better cheerleader than the girl divers LOL I love it!
This is funny because they are so nervous but also so good. I wish I was an athlete lol
I need to go look for my jaw, it dropped somewhere. Absolutely amazing, hoooow were the divers able to learn all these crazy movements so easily?!
I loved seeing them gain confidence over time! Which is truly what cheerleading is all about!
Divers, welcome to the world of knee dislocations lmao. I am a now retired gymnast and cheerleader. Never tried diving but now I definitely want to! That is one thing that must be nice about the water, drowning risk aside. That's one thing giving the cheerleaders an advantage to the water. Once you master the floor and specifically tackle the fear of potential injury you really have endless opportunities in the water.
They did incredible. Loved watching the counterpart to this video too. Such strong athletes and great to see Joey living out his cheerleader dreams too!
The guy was so clean and sharp for learning to be a cheerleader
OK BUT HIS JUMPS WERE SO GOOD
