CLASSIC BRITISH & GERMAN EASTER TREATS: SIMNEL CAKE & PLAITED LOAF// Happy Wednesday, Only a few days until Easter so today we want to share how to make a traditional Easter Simnel Cake which is very popular in the UK. We have never made this cake before so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. Then we make a plaited loaf (Hefekranz) which is extremely popular in Germany for the Easter holidays. Coloured eggs are a huge tradition for us so of course we make them as well. We hope you will enjoy this video and maybe you will find some inspiration for Easter. Lots of love, Kirsten & Joerg

RECIPE 'OSTERKRANZ (PLAITED LOAF)':
Ingredients
500g flour
7g dried yeast (or a cube of fresh yeast)
80g sugar
1 egg
220ml milk
5g salt
1 egg & a bit of milk for the glaze
Method
Mix yeast, salt, sugar, milk, butter and egg together and knead.
Cover the yeast dough with a wet cloth and let it rest in a warm place for about an hour until risen.
Split the dough in portions of about 40g. You need 3 strands for each wreath as you have to make braids.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Line a baking tray with baking paper, mix the egg with the splash of milk and brush the Easter wreaths. Bake for about 20-25 minutes.

When I was living in a German community, we used to make butter into carved lambs for our Easter celebration. The Bishop would bless the butter lambs and hot cross buns during Holy Week.
We used to bring our baskets of bread, wine, other ingredients to Mass to be blessed before we cooked with them. That was due to a Polish influence in our parish! Fun tradition.

The older I get, the more I realize that so many of the customs that I was raised with as a child in California (with no German heritage) actually hail from Germany! Our Easters were spent dying white eggs to beautiful pastel colors. Love the dress! when I was a child there were big chocolate eggs filled with pralinées (chocolates) in the stores in germany (I live in north rhein westfalia) in the cake-shops as well as in a normal supermarket wrapped in colored alufolie with a big loop today you can find big kinderschokoladen easter eggs in the supermarkets but easter bunnies are still the top-sellers : )
Yes, my dad has bought me the big Kinder chocolate eggs since I was little so they were available all year round actually. Still love them.

I am 76, and we have always colored boiled eggs at Easter. We even colored brown eggs when we raised chickens. Colors were weird but so much fun for kids to do. Not Easter without them here in the States. Going to try hot cross buns this year.

There's another vlogger I watch who tours around London and she was looking at Easter offerings. She came upon egg colouring kits in a store that carries products from around the world (she found them in the US section). She also commented that colouring eggs wasn't a big thing in the UK. I'm in Canada and colouring eggs has always been a part of Easter as long as I can remember (over 50 yrs). Unlike the UK, white eggs are common in grocery stores and brown/naturally coloured eggs aren't. Happy to spend Easter with you both.

Coloring eggs every Easter was a HUGE delight for my siblings and I. We lived in a very small town in north east Indiana in the USA. Every ones family was from Germany. Easter ranked right up there with Christmas.

I love the Easter decorations Germans have. Easter tree. My German husband decorated a small tree with colourful eggs back in 1989...got some weird looks from neighbours. Fast forward 2024 I see Easter trees in some English homes.

Obwohl ich Deutsche bin hatte ich bisher noch nie von der Kombination von gekochten Eiern und Maggi gehört. Ich musste es natürlich gleich ausprobieren und muss sagen dass es eine kulinarische Offenbarung war 😂
Hahah super zu hören! Ja, ich glaube es ist wirklich von der Region abhängig. Ich komme aus dem Saarland und einige haben Maggi da mit der Muttermilch bekommen (ich nicht, ich darf es normalerweise wegen einer Allergie nicht zu mir nehmen aber ein paar Tropfen einmal im Jahr sind okay).
War für meine Mutter ( 95 geworden) das A und O ! 😁

I really enjoyed this video seeing you get ready for Easter and feeling your joy. Being Italian American we also make a braided type bread and put an egg in it like you did and we also make a wreath the same way with the eggs put in and around the wreath. Here in America the rabbit has taken over Easter. Shouldn’t it be the lamb ? After all he is the lamb of God. No bunnies for me. Happy Easter to you both. Every Eadter i make coloured eggs for breakfast. My Mother in law cxme out from Germany to SA in 1932 znd she taught me a lot of German traditions. We boil the eggs for 3 minutes and then in different containers with a tablespoon of vinegar and boiling water we add food colouring different colours and leave the eggs in for 2 minutes. The eggs nicely coloured and still hot and softish we eat with toast fingers for breakfast with a platter of cold meats snd avocado pear and cheese wedges. Anc of course table decorated with chocolate Easter eggs. YUM also make a batch of cup cakes iced and drcorated on a cake stand on the table.

The cake looked very filling. My favourite things of Easter are Hot Cross Buns which have been lightly toasted and smothered lashings of butter and seeing new born lambs playing in the fields in the first of the spring sun.

You should try the Cadbury mini eggs, they don’t have a cream filling but they do have a hard candy shell. They are my favorite Easter candy. I loved everything about this! My mum has always made her own marzipan and uses a recipe which includes lemon juice and brandy and is cooked on the stove top which gives a smoother paste. She always puts at least an inch of marzipan on top of her cakes- we all joke there is more marzipan than cake but we secretly all LOVE it! I have been inspired by your vlog to give egg dying a go, and found white eggs in M&S today (I think duck eggs would be a good choice too) Thanks so much for sharing and a very Happy Easter to you and Joerg 🐣💛

You are very "fetching" in your Laura Ashley dress Kirsten, still have mine that I bought when I was 20-21 years old. When my children were young, I would put blue food colouring in the water when I made them soft boiled eggs around Easter...they would come out a light turquoise ....so, so pretty with the bright yellow yolk 🐇🐣🐤🐥🐦
Thank you so much! I have a couple of vintage Laura Ashley dress (this green one isn't vintage) and sadly the lower arm on my favourite one just ripped and it can't be saved. I'm so sad, I wore it all the time and it became fragile.
