FAILED the SCRATCH Test. How about IMPACT? - Pela Canopy Liquid Screen Protector Review
Remember the Pela Case? They one that resulted in my iPhone 11 Pro Max’s screen breaking? Well, my screen ~might have survived IF I decided to use Pela’s 60 dollar liquid screen protector. ~Might have.
So here’s what I did to test the the Pela Canopy Liquid screen protector. First, I paid 60 dollars for the product, (it’s 30 now), slathered the screen protector on one pane of glass, one iPhone and one Apple Watch.
Then I dropped Bertha, the 200g steel ball on it until it broke repeatedly and then scratched it with Eileen, the rock that chewed up the normal screen protectors in my Shellrus Sapphire screen protector review.
Out of all those tests, the impact protection improvement was noticeable but the scratch protection was not. So is the marketing fluff a pile of Monty crap. I’ll let you decide.
My recommended screen protectors: • Top 5 TOUGHEST Glass S...
Watch how my iPhone broke in the Pela Case: • Will it PROTECT my iPh...
Now Pela says you can slather the fluid over three devices which is handy BUT that feature isn’t anything special since you can do that with other liquid screen protectors as well. BUT unlike other liquid screen protectors, you have to provide your own cloth. Which in this case is like paying for a Triple AAA piece of rib-eye at a restaurant and then having them tell you that you need to bring your own plate.
The Canopy is 95% ethanol and 5% their own active ingredient. What is it exactly? I had no idea so I asked their CS and they said they didn’t know but let me know that it was food grade. Sweet?
Now according to their instructions, after you slather the liquid screen protector onto your device using your self-supplied fabric, you only have to wait 2 minutes for the stuff to harden.
Now to test the 10x strength claim, I used three of the cheapest screen protectors I could find. These were from the same seller I used in my toughest iPhone screen protector video and oddly enough, the glass that came in this brown box was average tempered glass, not crap glass. On average, the screen protectors broke around ~70cm’s.
With the Canopy applied screen protector, it broke around 85-90cm which is a noticeable difference.
So the untreated glass screen protector broke at a range of average tempered glass. With the Canopy, it sat in the area between good tempered glass and double tempered glass.
Now this improvement in impact protection isn’t surprising given that the other liquid screen protectors I tested provided similar protection.
Now is it 10x’s the strength, hard to say but I’d have to say NO. A definitely improvement but a bit overstated.
Now after smushing the Canopy covered screen protector between Bertha and a granite slab, I took all the usual suspects in trying to scratch the screen protector. Coins and knives which have a Moh’s hardness of around 5 and 6 and this rock which as a hardness around 7.
And like every screen protector that I’ve used, it scratches around 7 which is a far cry from the 9 that Pela’s CS stated for me. Let that sink in, it doesn’t add any noticeable scratch protection.
And here’s the bad thing about liquid screen protectors. It becomes part of your screen so when your screen scratches, you can’t remove it. You’re stuck with it. This iPhone 11 Pro had a flawless screen when I applied the Canopy. After a week in my pocket, I’ve got several micro-abrasions. If this was a normal screen protector, I’d just take it off and put a new one on. I can’t do that now unless I replace the screen and that’s great for the environment right?
With the Apple Watch that I put it on, I wanted to see if their product would minimize scratches. Like touch up paint for your car. The giant gashes on my Series 4 are just a giant and gashy after applying the Canopy.
So according to Pela, 10X the strength of the glass is equivalent to mildy better impact protection and no additional scratch protection. Is the Canopy a pile of steaming Monty marketing fluff? I’d say so.
I give props but at the end of the day, would still recommend going with a normal glass screen protector if you want the best protection for your device. Because again, screen protectors, are just consumables.

My personal take home message from all of this is: pela covers are actually worth the bother as they offer a decent grade of protection when paired with tempered glass, they save your device from daily life falls and so reduce the enviromental impact of breaking it and buying a new one. All of this without using plastic. As for the liquid screen protector...if it does not protect your screen well as tempered glass you might need to replace it, which leads for sure to a higher enviromental cost compared to replacing the tempered screen protector only.
It concerns me you didn’t share that Pela Canopy with Pela Case has a $200 screen damage guarantee. That’s a huge oversight.
That defeats the object of being environmentally friendly though doesn’t it?
@@laurabrown290 seems like a massive leap to make without any information about the process. They don't throw iPhones in landfills.
Might be worth noting that Pela will pay for repairs if the phone is damaged while in a Pela case and with the Canopy protectant on the screen. Not sure how cut and dry the process is though
Their customer service is amazing based on my experience.
Not to mention 1 vial is designed to cover 3 devices.
@@nnguyen2917 eh...not really. They recommend reapplying every 12 months so it's actually for one device, to last for up to 3 years, IMO.
That’s a bizarre response. Apply it to three devices then purchase a new vial every 12 months.
@@stolidmortified still sounds good to me. I replace a screen protector once every like 4 months. lol
Genuine question: would the results be the same if tested on glass? They purport that this product's strength has to do with how it bonds with the glass - so, it almost needs to be performed on an cell phone to see true results. I imagine they would be the same but I would be curious to know for sure. Also, I don't know what changed over the past decade but my hasn't scratched in YEARS, and I definitely don't notice micro abrasions (not even in this video in close-up), so if this product actually protects my phone more than on its own and its one less piece of plastic in a landfill, then I'm all for it, even at the inflated cost.
Buddy keeps saying he paid $60 for this screen protector, let's remember, this vial is for 3 phones' worth. So technically, it's $20/phone.
Its also free with a case
I had the Pela Canopy for over a year. It worked just like the Zagg except you can't see it. They tell you to reapply each year. Its been over a year for me. I noticed it was time when I get all those finger smudges plus one vial is for 3 devices.
Why'd the pro max break? World's strongest glass! As Zack says- "Glass is Glass and glass breaks"
The vial looks like it should be purple and have a picture of a lama
And sparkles. It needs sparkles.
Hey I was wondering if you can advise on whether a tempered glass protector is necessary/worthwhile to protect the camera portion of the iPhone 11 Pro. Thanks!
You should test all screen protectors at the same ball height. Regardless of how much stronger they claim to be.
I'm not sure what that would prove.
MobileReviewsEh That one glass is stronger than the other. The weaker glass will break at a short height while the stronger glass won’t break at that height.
Thanks for making these kinda videos. Love from Singapore ❤️
:)
what happens if you use a liquid screen protector plus a glass screen protector?
Food grade simply means that if you ingest or come in contact with it in another way (ie skin, breath it in, orifices) that it will not harm you. Basically it won't leech dangerous to human chemicals
Thanks for doing these vids. I bought a FloLab screen protector and a Mous case based on your reviews, and I love both.
I also bought both. FloLab sent me the wrong scren after waiting close to a month. They offered a replacement, or refund 50% and keep the screen I chose the latter.
They have good protectors but customer service when it comes to returns is awful
I'll pass the CS comment to my contact. I know they've been trying to get their CS up to snuff.
J F wow the same thing happened to me and right now I’m waiting on their decision. They’ve asked me twice to send pics and I keep sending more pics. Really getting frustrated with FLOLAB. They sent me the 6.1” protector instead of the 6.5 for my iPhone 11 Pro Max. In the meantime I’ve bought a MOUS hybrid SP until FLOLAB figures out their issue. I think MReh might need to check into FLOLAB and their poor customer service with sending wrong protectors and being slow slow to follow up.
MobileReviewsEh see my comment below too.
Ask auto detailers what SiO2 (Silica) is and they know exactly what it is. It’s the latest craze in detailing for the last few years. Most all the new detailing products have silica in them and you’ll usually see it referenced as “ceramic” even though it is not. Silica is super slick and it also has usually about a 24hr cure time to truly get a benefit. Not sure if you waited that long and not sure if they even told you to wait but if they didn’t, they should have. Silica SiO2 does offer protection in the auto detailing world but scratch resistant it is not. Now does it increase the chance that something won’t able to bite into your paint or glass to create a scratch...yes but it doesn’t have scratch resistant properties per se.
Does that mean you should wait 24 hours before using your phone after application?
I was wondering if the canopy works the same on a screen protector than on a phone screen? That might be a stupid question but that‘s what I kept asking myself while watching the video.
thank you for making this helpful video!!!
I buy canopy some months ago but because I got nervous about the application I didn’t use it yet, I am not really sure about what should I do, because I am thinking about if is a good idea or no use canopy on my phone, I mean I already give my money, I don’t have many options
I have had many of their cases for my XR but I will be getting a normal glass screen protector for my mini
what liquid screen protector do you like the best?
Monty was perfect! It was funny how he started walking towards you after. He was like PET ME!!
Monty's a good dog.
Monty is awesome. Such a good boy and actor. He’s a natural. What type of dog is he? Thanks for an honest and functional deep review compared to the ones I saw that cared more about the color
Thank you so much for exposing these products. You’ve saved me money.
:)
I am glad I saw this video. We were thinking about getting this because it was discounted. I wish I would have seen your video about the cases before I spent money on those.
Congratulations. Very useful video
I've always thought liquid screen protectors are basically the same thing as ceramic coat on a car since they both are SiO2
Most are. I'm not sure about this one.
So I know you had a bit of a nightmare last time you tried Incipio cases, but would you try them out again?
Does anyone know if this can be applied to the BACK of a phone. I'd like to apply it to the back of my s22 ultra but would that damage the finish?
I found one on Amazon with a weird name (it said homelifairy???) But the bottle it came in was HUGE. Like, half a shot glass full of liquid screen protector. I just put ten layers of that stuff on all of my tech lol.
Which tempered screen protector (for laptop surface pro 7) company you trust/the strongest?
What about there radiation protector
SiO2 coatings were initially developed to protect automobile finishes. They work great on cars because you're not constantly touching the painted surfaces of your car. A quality SiO2 coating can theoretically reach 9H of hardness on the Mohs scale. However, just like any other coatings or sealants, SiO2 coatings eventually fail if exposed to constant abrasion such as that from the daily use of your phone. Also, I strongly suspect that your phone's oleophobic coating seriously hindered the SiO2 coating's ability to properly bond with the screen.
I agree, SDS sheet can also tell some details only if Pela is honest, which I doubt they are.
The olephobic coating on the device did looked like it was pushing everything away. I didn't know that about the car coatings...I've used SiO2 liquid screen protectors before but they didn't seem to add much in terms of scratch protection.
we sure do miss you. I hope all is well! & Monty as well..
I appreciate this channel so much. His fluff is up to snuff. However, I think Monty is plotting something here. The way Monty looks at him... run while you still can.
I could totally see Monty being all nefarious and stuff.
The most underrated tech accessory channel on KZhead
Yes!
I think you missed the point. Pela is trying to lessen your waste. If it works and is better for your environment then that's a win. Is it the best no but if you care about your carbon footprint then Pela wins...just saying.
Thanks for preventing me from making a horrible purchase!!
I would say that the $60 covers 3 phones.
The website says it has enough for three phones. "has enough liquid to protect a minimum of 3 phones."
Thank you!!!
Can you test hydrogen screen protectors
bro the whole point is that they're better for the environment. gotta stop chirping them so much. Their at least trying to make a difference
right? If people were getting them for durability there's about a thousand options out there that specialize in it like damn
Maybe you can test the "Glaz Liquid" Screen protector soon. German Engineering, curious how it would hold up! Thx for those videos, they are awesome, as Monty is :)
I'll see what I can do.
I wonder if they have changed their formula over the years
We got many screen protector manufacturers here in Taiwan that provides this kind of liquid + tempered glass combinations for Apple Watch. Not being convinced to even try one....
Huh. Neat.
Has anyone gotten a hardened Canopy? I got one and I already talked to customer service about getting a new one but I don’t want to waste the hardened Canopy. Has anyone used the hardened liquid on their screens and does it still work fine?
I have the same problem!
How do u apply this crap I've heard of u do it wrong it can harden into a puddle and ruin ur phone someone plz help
I gotta a question , are you techwaffles from circa 2010? If so I finally found the awesome KZheadr I used to watch in middle school 😅👍
Nope.
LOL!! This guy has jokes! Thanks for the awesome review!
Monty looking good with his haircut and tie!
Monty was so dapper in this video.
Try Dglass or Moxie liquid screen protector
Can u put the liquid screen protector right onto your phone?
That’s actually what you’re supposed to do. You’re not supposed to put it onto another screen protector, they make that clear on their website.
Monty didn’t chase after that dropped toast, he’s well trained 😉
Woof! - Monty
7:01 Hows that Case called? :)
Probably been stated but isn't the ethyl alcohol just going to flash off leaving this 5% mystery substance the only thing left, as for cost I guess you're paying that price for 5% if the actual vial, seems like a rip-off too me, glad I watched this before considering this fallacy.
Time to get a Mous hybrid screen protector
I'd take that over a liquid screen protector.
Monte: Why did you let him put that tie on you? That is so not your color. Go blue!
Monty is adorable. Does he have some schnauzer in him? I have a schnauzer :)
Please review the unbreakable 3MK Neo Glass 8H hybrid glass screen protector, It is the strongest screen protector on the market! It is made in Europe!
I will check it out.

she said it was food grade because it is biodegradable which is their entire branding and marketing
You can always use a tempered glass protector and offset the carbon you used elsewhere
Ah... not gonna lie, I miss the old intro...
Everyone does.
I don't.
@@MobileReviewsEh Damn.
After believing the phone reps with the liquid screen protector when the iPhone X came out, we will never go back and use liquid screen protectors lol lesson learned
Pela products are so expensive. I wastef my money paying their oh so flimsy case for the pro max
The case is so brutally flimsy.
Thank you. It saved me a lot of aggravation.
I think Aaron and adorable Monty saved us all a lot of aggravation. I've decided to stay away from all liquid screen protectors. That's my take away.
MRE is MVP
Couple of months ago I was nearly bout to buy it because it’s great marketing being green and having the phone screen bare and protected with some invisible screen protector is awesome! But...after much investigation from people who’ve bought it they already gotten scratches on it, SMH. I understand about being sustainable but my phone cost over $1k so I’m going to protect it like it was my kid!
That's how I feel about it as well. I the greenest thing to do when it comes to smartphones is to prevent it from breaking and to keep it as long as possible before trading up.
A liquid you can slather on something and it gets rock hard 5 minutes, yeah I’m gonna buy some of those
When you put it that way...it does sound really suspect.
Dude!!! Using rocks to scratch the glass is beyond stupid… most people scratch their glasses or phones from being in a pocket or laying on the table or something “light” this is unrealistic… have used liquid glass like products on all my sunglasses and my lenses for years and are like new…
Pela is selling snake oil. I bet if you analyze their substance it will turn out to be cheap ceramic coating with bare minimum SiO2. That’s their cheap secret sauce. Notice the coating does not apply to pre-treated surface and just sheets off instead of applying, infusing or sticking to screen.
True story.
Silicon dioxide is food grade, yes
It’s glass, which in powder form is used as an anti caking agent in many foods such as powdered spices
