“It was a late September afternoon on the H7 near Satara where I watched a leopard feeding on an impala carcass in a tree. Knowing that leopards usually revisit their kills, I returned at first light in hope to find the leopard in its same spot still feeding. I did not see the leopard but noticed two hyenas below the tree trying to figure out a way to get to what was left of the carcass.”
“A few more cars joined me at the sighting spot, hoping to get a glimpse of the leopard, but the leopard was not around, so some of the cars continued on their way and I remained stationary with another lovely South African couple who ended up sharing some food with me. After about 20 minutes spent waiting, we were finally rewarded when one of the hyenas started climbing up the tree to get the carcass. You very rarely see hyenas climb anything at all so this was extremely exciting! The hyena got to the carcass and started feeding while also simultaneously trying to keep the second hyena from getting his share of the meal.”
“I was shocked at this sighting and I don’t believe almost anyone has ever seen this before, and that includes guides and rangers that I spoke to after this event! I was so intrigued. I watched the amazing thought process of this brave hyena as it contemplated its strategy of how to dislodge the carcass from the tree. It kept at its attempts and even after it fell from the tree it got straight back up to try again and I found this unbelievable especially after such a heavy fall from quite a fair height!”
“Eventually the hyena came back down the tree to assess the situation from below of how best to get the meal on the ground, but he wasn’t sure. The two hyenas ended up fighting for the scraps that had fallen to the ground and finally gave up and left. I believe that this is the rarest sighting I’ve ever had in the Kruger and I think the footage can speak for itself! This was simply incredible.”

Leopard is watching from another tree texting ''LMAO!''
“Noobs”
Clouded Leopards from Asia texts to leopard: you're cute too
He filmed it.
@@ronrobinson206 totally agree with you. I suspected that leopard itself upload this video to this youtube channel to make mockery out of this hyena.😂😂😅
@MC Cooper Hes not the one whole broke his leg😂😂😂
Plot twist: The leopard intentionally put the carcass so low to lure the hyena up before recording and posting the video of the hyena falling on YT.
🤣🤣
LMFAO
Hyena: Climbs a tree Evolution: Hell naw!
Adrian Gatin 😂
Lol
That is not climbing. It is called walking up a slanted slab. Had the upper part been raised a little more they would never make it up there.
Oddly enough, the Hyena is more closely related to a cat than a dog. They are a sort of missing-link between the two 🤣
If that was a real food sauce they would get better at climbing trees and we would get hyena tree dwellers but since it’s just a one off
They fell like my grades, my motivation, my self esteem, my happiness, and my hopes and dreams.
😂
Except the hyena still had some fight in him...over the prize up there.
Don't give up. It's never too late . Take it one day at a time .
You work so hard to defend it from other people, only to realize you're the one making yourself fall.
Amen to that.
“Pride comes before a fall.”
Warning: if the Pride arrives while you're in a tree don't fall.

the force of that crunching bite is incredible
@chocolatesquirrel100 I mean...do you not see it eating a whole rack of ribs?
Leopard be like, "he fell for it".
To hyenas: Well done! For years few humans have seen you climb a tree.
Getting up isn't the problem; it's the descent! Lions, although they're cats, have the same trouble. Fascinating video! Thanks for posting!
@Levent A no, they're not good tree climbers: kzhead.info/sun/aJSKirevqWqtdYk/bejne.html
@@ioi1989 They could still do it. Better than the Hyena. Probably can climb it better than you, silly human.
@@ioi1989 ~ awesome! Hyenas are far more intelligent than any big cat too! They have some smarts up there with the great apes! Super, super clever...funny they are, too! I love all 4 hyena species, my favourite wild animals...
Enclavious Firaga why are you getting offended by the fact that lions aren’t efficient climbers
Domestic cats have the same problem, that's why they get stuck up in trees. It's because lions and house cats lack the ankles that leopards have, ankles that can rotate 180 degrees. This means that when the leopard is upside down, the hind feet are facing the sky which allows the claws to dig into the tree and the leopard to essentially hang from its hind feet.
poor old leopard didnt take it up high enough
High or not if a few hyenas gather around the tree the leopard or cheetah would abandon it.

No the camera crew put it there specifically to make video. Do you think leopard will be that blind to keep it low.

0:35 Its my first time to hear that sound from an hyena
He thought he become lepeord so "why not leopards sound"
@@ravisalunke677 😂😂😂
They make those growling sounds like that often(mostly when fighting), but ngl that growl sounded kinda of deep and leopardy 🐆
Sounded like a leopard fight
😱 OMGoodness Steven Hayley, this was indeed a rare and possibly 1 in a million+++ sighting. Absolutely FANTASTIC. I loved reading your explanation in the description of this video too. THANK YOU so very much for sharing with all of us fans. 🤗👌
Agreed!! Definitely one in a million. We’ve had tens of thousands of sightings shared, not ONE was of a hyena in a tree.
Lovely to see you're still a contributor and important part of our small community Annie! Take care now.
@@tomtonka1915 😱😍🤗 AWEEE! Thanks dear Tom. You also take care and since I can't post on SL or Dam Cam, please send my LOVE 💕💖to all of our friends. 🙏👍😁
Lol had me laughing hard af
So awesome hyenas stay safe 😍
Hyena on the ground: Bro, you were suppose to push the meat down, not yourself.
What a fantastic video capture. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The dominance around food is so interesting.
Getting HIGH isn't for everyone 😂 😂
For every 'free food' in the tree there is a potential 'free fall' - Newton
wow this is a first for me well done KS fantastic footage
I like the slow motion repeat 😂 could have dragged it down.
Plot twist: the leopard was filming this to make it a meme
This is such a great channel!
Hold up, how we gonna ignore the harsh bone snapping at 1:22
I'm over laughing like a Hyena 😂😂
Hahaha good thing the other hyena was there to break his/her fall 🐾❤️ Great video, thanks for sharing
That slowmo dramaticized fall won’t discourage an opportunist Hayena or her rival to climb again .
Hyena, looks around and hope nobody saw it 😂😂😂😂
His buddy started telling him knock knock jokes as soon as he hit the ground!
I find that clumsiness si cute 😂
More like a Lowena
That lowena fell like a ripe grapefruit in harvest time
“If you judge hyena by its ability to climb a tree” .....
...it will live it’s whole life believing that it is stupid”
You're looking at 1200 PSI bite force. Twice that of a Lion.

Doctor Hyena Are you DOCTOR_HYENA or whatever on Roblox?
Heather Chandler yes I am.
Those things are powerhouses and can take a lot of damage.
Hyenas vs wild dogs?
this calls for natural selection to modify itself
No need, they still get enough food on the floor and by hunting it
Do you think animals that drown is a call for natural selection of gills too?
@@bryanjaramillo2789 bitches like you need to take some Midol for their PMS
No... this is why hyenas shouldn’t steal from a leopard.
That hyena fell like my drunk uncle at the family get together
That Hyena is like "Fuck Fuck Fuckeroo Fuck, where am I?" He even doesn't know his own name.
Hyena : that's how I use gravity to tear the meat off
imagine that you worked in a field, and that you decided to take a break under a tree
This is so exciting! I always knew the Hyena was Africa's number one predator but this video just proves they are still improving. They are obviously continuing to evolve in ways we could never imagine, including beginning to attempt to climb trees, I honestly have no idea what they will do next. Looking forward to future hyena videos displaying more of this behaviour and other evolutions too! Look after yourselves, and each other. God bless.
TRUE TOM! This may also have Safari Guides in general, re-evaluate their usual, immediate assumptions, that ALL hyena injuries are due to physical fights either within the clan or visiting clans and also their BIGGEST threat, LIONS!
Climbing a tree =/= evolution
The irony of "God bless"
scatman 😂
@@MrRazorblade999 hah yeah...
01:38 - if u listen quietly, u actually can hear a leopard laughing.
hyena's claws are not retractable, thats why....
It's got nothing to do with retractability. More like grip
@@daddysandrokombo7497 Actually, for big cats retraced claws allows for better climbing ability. Those claws aren't just for grabbing prey. Leopards are the kings of tree climbing in Africa.
Daddy Sandro Retractible claws aid in grip. Unfortunately for the hyena, they don’t have much in terms of grip.
Rodents and mustelids don't have retractables either but both groups are loaded with excellent climbers. It's all about claw and paw shape; spotted hyenas being essentially wolf analogs in lifestyle (ie. cursorial ground hunters) theirs have similarly evolved into "running cleats" not climbing aids.
@Azman Abas Of course they can. Case in point there's a species of fox - the North American gray fox _Urocyon cinereoargenteus_ - that's evolved to become a quite good tree-climber. But there would need to be some *reason* ("selection pressure") for their evolution to go that way, and last I checked the spotted hyenas were doing just fine in their terrestrial big-game pack-hunter niche so that's a long shot. They basically occupy much the same niche in Africa as the gray wolf occupies in the rest of the world; try figuring out an environmental pressure that'd make it important for wolves to start climbing trees and you'd be on the right track I guess.
Fell on top of His buddy who was not impressed.
Cute and funny😂
Hyena wasn't acrobatic enough to keep from slipping off the pommel horse!🤪
Not gonna lie, I never knew hyenas could climb trees. I'm impressed.
no they cant climb trees, the tree was not very sloppy so it was a very easy clim.
@@jyde50 so are you saying the Hyena teleported up the tree? If it didn’t climb up the tree, how’d it get up there?
@@ashdog236 do you have Brain problem? if i walk up a hill, does it mean i have climbed a mountain?

The Hyenas are still at the foot of the tree thinking about the tasty meal above them 😄
That last bit in slow mo was so funny
It’s learning to climb But it ain’t got wings Coming down Is the funniest thing It’s learning to climb Above the ground But what goes up Must come down
1:09 leopard said....thou shalt not steal my food..karma coming unto u😂😂..
Amazing video ... Hyenas devloped their techniques and this will compose danger on leopards.
that slow motion just kills me.. i'm dead lol
Not even a sniff left on that carcass
Haaaaaa
If Hyena was smart he would grab the food as he was falling so he wouldn't have to climb up again.
Leopard: they've *fallen* right into my trap.
And it's like 'why does somedody happen to be about with a camera the one time that happens'
Moral of the story: Do not try to be something you are not
Ooooo so scary🤷
U know I wouldn’t speak or talk if u weren’t on my phone ?!!
So the leopard was the camera man snickering away as the hyena fell off the tree.
I noticed 2 things; First, I guess there was a mattress on the ground as I heard no sound. Second, once on the ground, the falling animal became aggressive in order to stop its friend from laughing... (by making their famous laughing cry).
Oopsi someone needs a ladder😆
Leopard was like byeenaaaa
Hyena: Niggas caught me slipping once okay so what..??
Me "now why should hyenas climb trees?"
Hyena thought it was a vulture? 🤔 Hyena flew well. Good landing. 10! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It seems very mysterious that Hyenas are related to Felines, when they seem to be more of a Feline-Canine hybrid.
They are actually closer related to the mongoose. The hyenas have their own family. The Hyaenidae family. Though they are much closer related to the cat than they ar the canines. They have nothing to do with canines and that's fascinating
Hyenas being similar to canines is the result of convergence evolution
I wonder if his thinking and eating it up the tree so the other hyena won't try and take it "i know a leopard put up there first" , or they're just dumb and can't think to drop it first then go down the tree and eat it on the floor. No one will ever know how a hyena thinks😞
That's what he gets for not waning to share with his buddy lol
Props to the cameraman. I’d have laughed so hard.
If they can climb trees, cheetahs and lions will be of history.
I was waiting for a leopard to come down from a higher branch to scare it off but that was hilarious
O great, not seen before such vid👍
I was waiting for the owner to come back.
I am laughing like a hyena at the fall😂😂
Incidentally this is also why I shouldn't climb trees.
Nice fall
Hahahahaha that's what he gets for trying to steal a Leopards dinner.
I think that hyena have a mini heart attack when it falls
Me : how do I get off tree safely ??? Google : call someone and tell em to bring ladder along *Bing :*
His friend is laughing at him😄
I love seeing that
When the balloon popped it cracked me up.
I laughed like a hyena!
Hehehehe
when the hyena fall i feel lmao

Did anyone else hear the crack of the bone at 1:23?
That leopard stashed it too low
I.like hyenas they.are funny and sweet. They are very persevering I like them a lot especially their pups
Leopard over there laughing watching from the distance
Luckily for the hyena it just fell from the tree. Saw a doc once where a lion trying to get down a tree where a leopard had stashed its kill slipped and got a paw stuck in a crook between branches. The weight of the fall broke its leg and it was still stuck. Slow agonizing starvation. With a broken leg.
Is that a impala or a baby giraffe? I see the spot print of a giraffe. I can’t tell it’s disfigured
😆 fell like a brick!! Didn’t even try to land on its feet! 😂
I bet the hyena wasn't laughing after that.....
I never knew that they do somehow climb trees. Instead of throwing the food down, it was the one falling down. I’m sure it gave it a third try.
He dropped like a sack of potatoes😂😂
There wasn't a milligram of grace in the whole sequence.
