At PAX East, Lucy got a behind-closed-doors hands off look at Dune: Awakening, the upcoming survival MMO from Funcom. Here are five things she learned.
The spice sure is flowing right now. We’ve seen the movie, read the book, bought the hideous popcorn bucket, and yet, we’re still eager for more Dune in our lives. Well good news everyone, Funcom is working on an open-world survival MMO called Dune: Awakening. Recently at PAX East, Lucy saw a presentation of the game behind closed doors. From crafting and survival mechanics, to avoiding the giant sandworms that call Arrakis home, here are five things that caught her eye.
Dune: Awakening is slated to release on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, but currently has no set release date.

It ain't about how the bucket looks but how it functions
Glorious* popcorn bucket
Definitely interested in the bene gesserit acolyte class 😮
somethings telling me to be suspicious, I wanna see gameplay first
like most games these days it'll look like PS3 graphics but the microtransactions page they enable the day after reviews are out will be next gen
@@jordan8056 play more games, man
@@jordan8056 Have you played Funcom's other MMOs?
It's Funcom, the only thing you need to worry about is that they'll move onto another MMO in five years, but they'll keep the servers online like the rest of theirs _e.g. Anarchy Online, Secret World Legends, the Conan games, etc._
I mean there is some gameplay that is like cinematic in their short videos and in the recent trailer but its cinematic and not raw so i get your complaints but i promise you its not too artificial
But is this game AS WRITTEN?
I hope pvp will be exclusive to the pvp zones and players that don't want to interact with pvp don't have to worry that they'll get killed by a random while out minding their own business.
youre in luck :D
What I want to know is when is it coming out
This game is from the Conan Exiles developer. It’ll be more like that game than anything else.
Have you seen previous games they have made? The secret world and age of conan hyborian adventures were quite amazing in their times - conan exiles was not advertised as an MMO
Guess im the 1st comment but Man, I spent an entire day watching explanation videos and deep dives on Dune Part 2 and the books. I was hooked, but the excitement wore off, and now I'm back to baseline. I need to see that movie again, but I have to catch Godzilla vs. Kong now.
Just read Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune and God Emperor. I'd recommend reading all of Frank's if you haven't already, but those are a decent start. Avoid his son's books like the plague.
@@_Jay_Maker_ Read that in every comment section to avoid all the books by his son
Sold it to me at MMO
Im excited the dune series, books movies (newer) are masterpieces so I'm excited
We want to see combat gameplay!
Sune! (literally probably soon, they are releasing new videos within the next few weeks)
I have yet to see any knife fighting/close quarters combat with this game. Something that is a big part of combat in dune. I won’t hold my breath for this game. It may be good. But I doubt it will actually be dune.
The melee system is still being developed and was going through a rework when they were making the last videos, rest assured it will still be a big part of the game, but it wont be the focus of combat, especially with the worms not liking shields, and shields might be a bit expenseive, theres a skill tree for both ranked and melee combat.
You could power a wind farm from Frank Herbert spinning in his grave.
You could, but that would wake Shai Hulud.
Why would he find this objectionable?
Yall seem to think there was nothing on arrakis considering they had what two cities and what 10 million people on arrakis but no they didn't use no machines nothing to power the city, the shields they didn't use machines to farm spice and they walked everywhere and didn't use space crafts to get there either....
Frank herbert wouldnt care, he'd probably approve because he'd be working with them.
They really need to stop calling these open world survivalcraft games "MMOs" just because they have 24 player servers and pvp. No one is falling for it anymore.
The only one falling for anything is yourself falling for your own lies, you dont do research and you dont learn anything, this game will be and is an mmo, thousands per server is their goal, just because you think open world survivalcraft games cant be MMOs doesnt mean this wont cant be, plus this game is quite different from other games that arent really mmos like ark or rust or fallout 76, very, very different. IF you want you can join the discord server w ere the devs are very transparent.
@@csahaas MMO is not a term to be thrown around, it has a very specific meaning, a game having a bunch of people on a server at once doesn't make it an mmo, there is a lot more to it, they are using the term MMO as a marketing tactic, because they know what people will think when they see it also, you're delusional if you think they'll have 1000 player servers, much less thousands, how many times has a developer promised that in the past and had to settle for 32 or 64 when reality hit?
@@premiumfruits3528 Yes it does, the word MMO literally means "massively multiplayer online" for some reason lots of mmos tried to copy WoW so lots of MMOs are like wow but that doesnt mean every MMO has to be like WOW. Plus this will have more mmo type of aspects than just a large player per server number
They have said are using phasing. Meaning they will splinter out shard servers. Aka not everyone will be visible at the same time at the same place. Many games use this now. But I agree we need to see what combat looks like. The game does look amazing, but how it plays is everything.
@@premiumfruits3528 32 or 64 players ahahahahaha no... theyre goal is thousands and theyre already past your little numbers im pretty sure. also the map is massive afaik, they wouldnt just put 32 people on a massive map
Where are my Exiles at? Do you think they will outdone themselves and make a less buggy game?
The Shai-Hulud designs resemble the worms from Tremors instead of Dune worms.
Say you haven’t read the books without saying you haven’t read the books.
Tremor clans and roleplay incoming
Perhaps read the books and perhaps watch the old movie hommie
There will be 2 worms in this game, the ringmouth ones from the movie and the one from the recent trailer
Funcom will ruin this like they ruin everything. They have an incredible older franchise called Anarchy Online. Which is very similar to Dune. Yet, it languishes in obscurity. While they could revamp it and make it their own, but Funcom wants to use famous IP's like Conan or Dune to make lackluster games that will be popular for about 10 days.
Let's hope they have learned a few things
I'm sick of hearing about this game without seeing any gameplay, and I say that as someone who has liked this studio's previous work.
Check out their shorts on tiktok/youtube/instagram or whatever, they have some gameplay thats more cinematic (UI off and max graphics) but its still an actual person playing, same will the short snippets in the trailer, anything with the orbital camera is gameplay and not faked (like the day before lol) faking would cost more money than just recording them playing. there will be none cinematic/UI on gameplay soon, infact they recently did screenshots with UI on and stuff but idk if that qualifies as gameplay lol
LIBERTY FOR ARAKAS👨🚀
I'd like to see cryptocurrency integrated in this game and allow an open trading systems like we see in GUILD WARS 2 and being able to store that crypto into cold wallets if we chose to. I would like to see players have the option to select any of the great houses they choose to be a part of and also offer the chance to start your own great house if certain requirements are met. I would like to see weekly or monthly events held which will allows guilds to compete amongst each other and build a reputation among the guilded communities through sheer force victories. You can't imagine the feeling a player gets when one receives recognition without decoration. They will remember my name...
They said no crypto lol
Soooo No Mans Sky but in Dune form?
No it's Dune in Dune do you know anything about dune?
No, no mans sky is very very very very different lol. lots of empty procedurally generated planets that all seem fake. This game is not entirely procedural, a lot of it is actually hand mad, and they will try theyre best to not make it empty, no mans sky realistically isnt an mmo, doesnt have any sory of politics, or a player controlled economy. So no, different.
I think it will be Conan Exiles in Dune form. :)
@@videogameaccess nah. the same creative director on both games said theyre very different
Destiny 3
This or into the light?
Very very different lol, what makes you think this is like destiny??
@@csahaas Character costumes. Desert stage also there was in Destiny 1 and the first thing that I seen in Destiny. Cabal’s planet.
@@erdalkamiloglu4683 its Dune bruh, scifi and on arrakis. Dune was written in the 60s. also tbh in my personal opinion destiny designs are way too over done, way to much going in, too much added, and not cool looking. Dune looks cool
Lost me at MMO
I'm wondering if it will be like Conan Exiles. Multiplayer but with the ability to play in single player or just with friends.
Same here... MMO 🙅🏻 nope
Bye
Things like “free”, “mmo”, “mobile” turn me down
Yeah, such a waste. I'd be dying for story-driven single player adventure in the Dune universe.
so it's just Rust
lol no. Rust is like the worst survival game 😂
How can someone look at this and say what you said ? 💀😂
No, less pvp than rust.
Is this a ftp?
probably not.
Oh boy another souls like.
Where did you get that idea?
What? This is a very far cry from a soulslike lol
Souls like... are we serious bro? Did you even watch the video...?
bit of a skyrim clone…… what ever happened to creativity?
You should probably stop playing most video games if you complaining about clones
Skyrim? I think Tears of the Kingdom is closer, with its harvesting and building elements Though to be fair, Moldugas (in BotW and TotK) are 100% a Dune send-up.
@@SlightyLessEvolved it’s literally almost an exact copy….
I see what’s happening here lol
@@rudstar64You're face to face with greatness, and it's strange
Dunefield? But with vehicles and not in the stars...
yea except not a singleplayer (its an mmo) rpg(has some rpg elements but not marketed as an rpg) with loads of loading screens( game is set in a decently seamless world).. so.. not dunefield, more like Dune: Awakening
