Amil was paroled in 2018 and is still alive at age 86 while James died in prison in 2008 age 78. Phil Christopher served 6 years and was released. Harry Barber only served 3 years of a 20 year sentence before being released in 1983 and is 81 years old. Not sure when Charles Mulligan and Ronald Barber were released and don't know the current whereabouts of Charles Broeckel.

  • The heist itself was meticulously planned, but the previous activities : (registered) transport by plane, paying for a house to have a meeting together, travelling together in one taxi, leaving the car with all the evidence inside it, not planning their disappearance after the crime, forgetting the dishes in the dishwasher etc were all huge planning errors.. these are the reasons they were apprehended and then jailed.. good break-in, but poor attention to planning details..

    @zeejimi4044@zeejimi40442 жыл бұрын
    • I totally agree. It also seemed they travelled together on the plane!! Being established criminals in Cleveland, they needed to be careful to not show any connections to each other beyond Ohio. If they had travelled on various dates and by various means, stayed alone in CA, and scattered into non-extradition countries, they MAY be still living large...

      @jenplinguist@jenplinguist Жыл бұрын
    • Their biggest problem was just how many people they opened up to that became informants. The taxi driver might not have been so useful if only 2 or 3 guys went with him and the rest traveled another way, using the house of someone not involved in the crime for a meeting when they could have easily met at a hotel or parking lot (whom became a big part of the investigation), the guy in prison, the woman who led them to the last guy. I mean, forgetting to wash the plates is only circumstantial evidence but telling someone you committed the crime is just stupid.

  • Great piece of detective work. They asked around about criminals with similar MOs and then checked flight records. Tracked back to Youngstown, Ohio the crime was unraveled. Had they used cars to drive to the West Coast and not used credit cards maybe they would not have been caught.

My daughter (only 3 years old!) stood her ground, faced them directly in the eye, and simply said "If you're being mugged, just say no. Your robbers cannot legally take any of your possessions." Almost instantaneously, the robbers collapsed to the floor, suffering from a bipolar seizure. Everyone clapped, and she was given the position as senator of the state of Florida, as well as invited by the Democratic National Convention to run for President in 2024. What an unbelievable event! So many criminals these days are convicted from evidences in social media and messenger services like WhatsApp. There was even a case I saw not too long ago here in the UK, and the police were going from dead end to dead end to find the suspect. Finally they got a mobile contact number, which had been disconnected. By hunch, they decided to Google the number and found an ad listing connecting another number and got the suspect from that number. Its almost impossible to get away these days, unless you completely go off grid.

Especially with the technology we have now, it’s almost near impossible to not leave some kind of trail. So many times it’s almost the simplest thing overlooked that leaves a clue and eventually starts a domino effect.

    • I agree with you papabrtrk, today (1-1-2022) I feel these guys would have been caught within a couple of days. From 1972 to today, law enforcement investigations & technology have advanced light-years. However, the 7 players would have also used different methods to pull off their burglary. No matter how or what type of instruments the criminals use, it always boils down to the snitch. You must take into account, "loose lips sinks ships".

Bank made mistake thinking vault was impenetrable, didn’t have adequate alarming. Robbers only went through fraction of 4000 safe deposit boxes, the heist still netted $50 million francs in 1976 money. Thieves welded the vault door shut, and also spray painted a message inside the vault: Without Hatred, Without Violence, Without Weapons. One man was arrested as the mastermind, he escaped custody and was never caught until his death. He was given a life sentence in absentia, but never captured. In 2010 a man named Cassandri wrote a book, claiming the original mastermind only played a minor role and that HE was the mastermind. Statute of limitations prevented his arrest for the heist, but he was later arrested on money laundering related to it. 20 others were questioned, nothing came of it. None of the robbery proceeds were ever recovered.

Jim Kallstrom, was an American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent who served as assistant director in charge of its field office in New York. He was noted for heading the criminal investigation into the TWA Flight 800 crash in 1996. James Kallstrom Born James Keith Kallstrom May 6, 1943 Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S. Died July 3, 2021 (aged 78) Fairfield, Connecticut, U.S. Alma mater: University of Massachusetts Amherst Occupation: Head of the FBI New York field office Spouse(s): Susan Kallstrom (m. 1971) Children: 2 Career Kallstrom was the host of the Discovery Channel show The FBI Files until it was cancelled in 2006.[9] He supported Donald Trump during the 2016 United States presidential election and referred to Hillary Clinton and the Clinton family as being criminal-like.[5][10] He was also critical of the Special Counsel investigation by Robert Mueller, saying in 2018 that it was orchestrated by a cabal beyond the scope of the FBI and the intelligence community.
