Amil was paroled in 2018 and is still alive at age 86 while James died in prison in 2008 age 78. Phil Christopher served 6 years and was released. Harry Barber only served 3 years of a 20 year sentence before being released in 1983 and is 81 years old. This crew was so meticulous and near flawless in their execution of the heist and yet they forgot about the freaking dishwasher and basically confessed to their crimes by openly bragging about it. A tale of criminal brilliance and arrogant stupidity.
That's the thing. They either can't keep their mouths shut or they start spending their loot like there's no tomorrow.
And not to mention all the evidence they left in the car. You had all that time to get rid of it ffs.
They should've just joined the ironworkers apprenticeship program!
Their real fatal mistake was saving some time and taking a plane, instead of driving. Their names, times, and places are nailed. A 9-day drive to collect 9 million in loot. Not a big sacrifice.
All professional criminals do brag.. I know of two incident where the other criminal telling people in the bar that i was part of the gang who robbed the bad you watching now on news.. The 2nd thief phone the owner of the house he just bought to quickly switch on the TV and watch the news about the robbery and it he was part of the robbery they all do
The heist itself was meticulously planned, but the previous activities : (registered) transport by plane, paying for a house to have a meeting together, travelling together in one taxi, leaving the car with all the evidence inside it, not planning their disappearance after the crime, forgetting the dishes in the dishwasher etc were all huge planning errors.. these are the reasons they were apprehended and then jailed.. good break-in, but poor attention to planning details..
I totally agree. It also seemed they travelled together on the plane!! Being established criminals in Cleveland, they needed to be careful to not show any connections to each other beyond Ohio. If they had travelled on various dates and by various means, stayed alone in CA, and scattered into non-extradition countries, they MAY be still living large...
Their biggest problem was just how many people they opened up to that became informants. The taxi driver might not have been so useful if only 2 or 3 guys went with him and the rest traveled another way, using the house of someone not involved in the crime for a meeting when they could have easily met at a hotel or parking lot (whom became a big part of the investigation), the guy in prison, the woman who led them to the last guy. I mean, forgetting to wash the plates is only circumstantial evidence but telling someone you committed the crime is just stupid.
Great piece of detective work. They asked around about criminals with similar MOs and then checked flight records. Tracked back to Youngstown, Ohio the crime was unraveled. Had they used cars to drive to the West Coast and not used credit cards maybe they would not have been caught.
Or spread out to different cities post heist
Sooo many what ifs. Enough time to think about it in jail
Or used aliases when they paid for the airline tickets.

I'm so proud of my daughter for stopping a bank robbery today. The robbers went in and held their guns up, telling everyone to put their hands in the air. My daughter (only 3 years old!) stood her ground, faced them directly in the eye, and simply said "If you're being mugged, just say no. Your robbers cannot legally take any of your possessions." Almost instantaneously, the robbers collapsed to the floor, suffering from a bipolar seizure. I pulled off the perfect heist when I was young. After many nights of planning and mapping out escape routes I was finally able to get downstairs without waking up anyone or tripping the motion sensors in the middle of the night and get the last piece of strawberry cheesecake in the fridge.
@Max Mason >> well done !
I tried to get the last piece of strawberry cheesecake once. I came under heavy enemy small arms fire and stepped on a land mine. Barely made it out alive.
I used to sneak downstairs and watch Johnny Carson. I had a complicated map in my head of every place in the hall and every step that wouldn't make noise. At one spot I had to skip 2 steps. I could actually turn the TV up high enough to hear because my dad's study was at the opposite end of the house from my parents' bedroom. I never got caught. Still kinda miss Johnny Carson. So true. So many criminals these days are convicted from evidences in social media and messenger services like WhatsApp. There was even a case I saw not too long ago here in the UK, and the police were going from dead end to dead end to find the suspect. Finally they got a mobile contact number, which had been disconnected. By hunch, they decided to Google the number and found an ad listing connecting another number and got the suspect from that number. Its almost impossible to get away these days, unless you completely go off grid.

This should have been called The NEAR Perfect Heist. Has there ever been a perfect heist? Great episode! Though they were meticulous, there will always be a flaw somewhere. Especially with the technology we have now, it’s almost near impossible to not leave some kind of trail. So many times it’s almost the simplest thing overlooked that leaves a clue and eventually starts a domino effect.
I agree with you papabrtrk, today (1-1-2022) I feel these guys would have been caught within a couple of days. From 1972 to today, law enforcement investigations & technology have advanced light-years. However, the 7 players would have also used different methods to pull off their burglary. No matter how or what type of instruments the criminals use, it always boils down to the snitch. You must take into account, "loose lips sinks ships".
The perfect heist had been done, but we simply dont know because it was perfect
@@chopstickcheppo1511 not how that works
Perfect heist occurred in Nice, France at Societe Generale Bank in July 1976. Team spent two months digging tunnel in sewer next to bank. Bank made mistake thinking vault was impenetrable, didn’t have adequate alarming. Robbers only went through fraction of 4000 safe deposit boxes, the heist still netted $50 million francs in 1976 money. Thieves welded the vault door shut, and also spray painted a message inside the vault: Without Hatred, Without Violence, Without Weapons. One man was arrested as the mastermind, he escaped custody and was never caught until his death. He was given a life sentence in absentia, but never captured. In 2010 a man named Cassandri wrote a book, claiming the original mastermind only played a minor role and that HE was the mastermind. Statute of limitations prevented his arrest for the heist, but he was later arrested on money laundering related to it. 20 others were questioned, nothing came of it. None of the robbery proceeds were ever recovered.
