Peekaboo! Germany 1946 What-If Diorama
My friends, tonight we're making a diorama with a T29E3 Heavy Tank from Takom. The reason I decided to go "what-if" is because the tank was developed in 1947 and never saw deployment. It closely resembles the Pershing which was deployed in Europe, so my idea was "what-if the conflict went on after 1945, or maybe the tank was developed faster?"
Anyway, we're about to try out some new exciting diorama and miniature scenery techniques!

"I'm not too nit-picky when it comes to small details..." Ummm.... yeah.
Every scratch has to look like a scratch Every piece of wood has to have a splinter Every face has to have a pupil
Alright, I only wasn't nitpicky on this one because I wanted the model off the workbench already :)

Could make it an abandoned vehicle in a ditch with a transport/column of infantry passing by
The 'Ma friends' at the start of each video, make me feel loved
Ah captain you made it!
Indeed... and don't we need it these days
It is cold this morning captain.
@@jamesgellert1263 mmm... cold...... and hard
Some things here don't react too well to bullets.
I feel like a modeler who finishes painting at the stage where the author of the video says: "And now we start painting.." :))
Same here, friend lol
When the photorealism kicks in... Seriously , Night Shift could do some bad shit crazy stuff with a high res camera and a studuo enviroment. I bet if you slam a ww2 combat footage filter on this it looks as the real thing.
so you mean like a snap together model with stickers?
Yup... same 😛
Uncle Night Shift: Applies multilple paints to single piece of grass. Mother Nature: - I like your style.
I would really want to see a completely abandoned vehicle on your channel, like completely rusty and beaten up by the rain. Orr....a diorama placed in Rotterdam, and the main protagonist being a Churchill ;)
I soooo want to make an abandoned, rotting vehicle! Picking up pieces of courage and inspiration at the moment, so it'll definitely happen :)
or a Ferdinant( that tank had too poor engine and could easily be stuck)
@@NightShiftScaleModels you could use your obj 279 for this cause it is an apocalyptic tank so i see it could be and good option to use the tank
What about a diorama of a rusted out tank next to a garishly bright childs playground, the children can play on the swings next to a monument to human suffering and death. I personally think it would be an awesome diorama, if one could pull it off that is.
@@NightShiftScaleModels Maybe even make it sit in a bog. Not just wet effects - but completely wading in water and mud.
YES! I am totally doing something similar with my m18, so this is basically a walk through! Thank you night shift!
A Sherman I'm doing is going to look rather reminiscent of this scene, too. It turns out I'm much more risk averse than Martin. I like to follow trails, not blaze them.
"Allied tanks going through mud" is starting to become a theme :D
@@NightShiftScaleModels i actually used real mud from outside because i had no acrylic mud and with some work i managed to get it to look fairly in scale
After a 40+ year break from building models I began again a few months ago, and while I’ve done a few bases for them, they have been of a limited scale, so I am finding this series to be extremely helpful as I want to step up my game, and really didn’t know where to start...things have changed a lot in 40 years!
Welcome back to the modellin mischief Jeff!.. 👋😊..Be safe an healthy well wherever you be my friend. (/-\)..
Broken bulb... Love it! 👌
The final result is astonishing. The diorama gives great emphasis on the tank and its size. While T29 and T30 may not be the most appreciated tanks, they're beautiful. Congratulations for this whole journey :)
If the US army did adopt the T29 and T30, it would be called Heavy tank M29 and Heavy tank M30. What general names that these tanks would use, i have no idea but it's an interesting what if scenario
@@darnit1944 actually there was an idea of the army adopting atleast the t29. and was promptly thrown out. the whole t series of heavies tanks were test beds to see the downsides of mounting an extremely large gun (mind you the largest gun mounted in a turreted tank at the time was either a 105 howitzer in the m4a3e2 assault sherman, or the 90mm gun on the jackson.) if there was a proposal for adopting a heavy tank its likely the e2 would be taking that place and them just ordering more than the 200 they already had. because to be frank the lightest of the t series of heavies, the t29, was already to heavy for all but 1 port in all of europe. meaning they would need to be shipped from the US (likely on the east coast) and have a one way trip to france where a well known and well used port could pick them up. then you got transporting them to the front, which would solely be by train seeing the army tank transporter best lifter couldnt even carry one seeing it weighed 20+ tons over its max. and the germans know trying to move heavy tanks without transporters isnt fun. hell the germans took a already in use half track, and convereted into a tank transporter, solely because all of their heavy tanks couldnt use any of their own tank transporters. and the germans had beastly ones at that.
t-29 height its 10 ft 6 in (3.20 m) and a barn like that can be between 22 and 29 ft (7-9m) and here you can see the tank it's almost as tall as the barn and the soldier is taller than the barn doors so it really doesnt show how big the tank is because proportions are not correct, dont get me wrong, the modeling and painting its impressive but if he do all that hard work to make a very realistic diorama he should take an extra step to get a more accurate scale
@@Thekilleroftanks Largest gun mounted on an American turreted tank*
You will appreciate them if you played World of Tanks in the old days :).
The Friday "My Friends" reigns!
It's almost like he should rename the videos to "Mah Friends."
Or maybe I should change the neon intro and instead of NS it would just say Mah Frens :)
I didn’t get to watch them all on the same day, but it was a banner Friday for me to save 3 videos that would begin: “Shut up compressor” “What’s up gangsters?” and of course “Man frens”
The videos of NightShift becomes my tradition of Friday evening, I watch them drinking a soda and eating a donuts ! PS : Outstanding, amazing, wonderful, like always mate !
Beautiful scene, I like how nonchalantly you create these masterpieces - makes it look easy where in fact it's hard work requiring a lot of planning and forethought. Chapeau bas!
Absolutely stunning work, the way you paint terrain just blows my mind!
Awesome job! There's a trick I've used in the past to ad simulated weight to something like a tank. Make the ground under the treads somewhat uneven and ad a couple lengths of fishing line to the underside of the tank. Run the line through the diorama and pull the tank down. The wheels on the treads will articulate over the uneven ground as if the weight of the tank was real.
Excellent work, my friend. The brickwork on the barn is perfect, many railway modellers could learn a thing or two from your videos.
Very nice result. Oils are very useful for just the reasons you listed. Nothing can be blended like oil paints. That's why they have survived for literally centuries.
I'm (as always) deeply impressed with your skills and creativity. Everything in this diorama looks just great.
Clearly outclassed. The farm was astonishing! Most of my tracks are behind safe berms.
Outstanding diorama and kit/barn. Well done.
My day just got a whole lot better. 🙏
I don't even care about model building and this is by far my favorite channel
Being a person who loves tanks and history. I fell in love watching this. Only real criticism I have though is that with the positioning of the tank and turret it looks like it is preparing for or in combat. In which case the infantry would never be standing in front of it, they'd be standing off to the side of the tank and the loader wouldn't be out of the hatch. If they were at a resting position the cannon would be facing forward so all of its frontal armor is at use and the 2 12.7mm coaxial mounted guns could handle enemy infantry. Due to turret traverse speeds being so slow during this era it was very rare for the turret to be offset from the hull unless engaged in combat.
I'm EXTREMELY thankful for the added captions. I've been enjoying your videos for almost a year now but my defective ears and I were surprised and quite thankful for these sudden captions. Seriously, thank you so much. The diorama and everything about it ended up extremely superb (as expected from you :y)
I'm absolutely amazed at the level of detail painting. It really inspires me and I'm learning something new every week, a true tutorial. A big thankyou Uncle Nightshift.😀
Every time I see your thumb nails on your videos I think it is a actual battle scene and it takes me a few seconds of looking at it to realize it is a model. Amazing work, keep it up.
Just amazing. A brilliant project and just loved it watching come to life .
This was one of my favorite projects and I'm kinda sad it ended and I loved it but I very much loved the journey of this model coming together your video are like a show to me and I'm excited for every other video that come.
Possible suggestions Kv-2, kv-1,panzer vi, panther, any stug,T-34, nashorn or hetzer if you ever feel stuck or want suggestions
KV-2 is on the to-do list, in a pretty unusual setting :) Same with the Panther.
Well done, this looks truly fantastic. I love the fact that you can enjoy it from afar, and then the closer you get, the more you see.
Beautiful, inspiring work.
Absolutely fantastic! I was transfixed watching this video, thank you very much for taking the time to show your skills and show the rest of us how it's done. I wanna try! Beautiful work!
Never really tried out 1/35 scale but after seeing one of your video's I'm now working on a WWI Verdun diorama and I'm having so much fun with it! Thanks a bunch for the inspiration and the fun content!
Totally worth it spending my lunch brake watching this.
This whole project is out of this world. You did a fantastic job!
1. I wish I wasn't colorblind. 2. I wish I was this creative. Love this.
I have been watching huge amounts of your videos in the past months, and I want to say that I love your way of storytelling and - of course - the results of your endeavours. You make it look so easy, and I have loads of facepalm moments where I am embarassed that I was not able to come up with the techniques you show myself. I love it. I totally get that tanks are your thing, but I would really like to see you tackle a tractor or something not-war-related. I would assume that even your first attempt at some post-apocalyptic utility vehicle (or something along those lines) would be stunning. It would offer a chance to go all out with customising, scratch building, painting, and story telling. Keep it up mah friend!
Once again you've done an amazing job. I could watch these videos of yours for hours. As a matter of fact I'm watching this one again because the 15 minute video you dropped today wasn't enough.
Absolutely blown away by how amazing that barn is. Top class👍
I've already watched this a few times and each time you blow me away, I could watch and listen to you all day. You are so good at what you do and your a thoroughly good watch, please keep it up 👍
You are definitely a master, the colors are incredible! And your figure shadows and dry brushing is first class. Thank you for sharing.
BRILLIANT. An outstanding tutorial! Makes it all so clear
XF-1 is rarer then gold right now and here Night Shift is slapping it on the side of dioramas, what a baller.
Jesus when you spend so much time on dirt you know the modeller is excellent professional
Highlight of my week is your uploads
"Uh oh, I did too much grass!" Yes, having too much grass is indeed quite a problem Mr. Night Shift. Though, some would say they don't have enough grass! ;D
Too much grass in your pocket can be a huge problem, especially if you get caught!
I thought you had lost your mind when you painted the brown primer over all of the grass and stones. I couldn't believe how well it turned out! I don't know why I haven't found your channel sooner but I'm so glad it was recommended to me! Subscribed!
What a fantastic job you did. Very well done. Thank you.
Always lovely to see these come together fully
I've been scratch-building or kitbashing models from the age of 8. That's "1961" in hooman years. But despite all your new-tech materials like acrylics and Styrofoam® and tools like your wire foam cutter and stereolithography setup, the thing that keeps me coming back is your *sheer, unadulterated, enthusiastic creativity!!* You have a *great* eye for details, and a love of history and storytelling. Your willingness to share your knowledge is a great testimony to your professionalism. Thank you for these! Liked, subbed, looking for the "Thank$" button. 😢 didn't find on.
Trick + Technique = Tricknique! 😬 (one idea/suggestion - either add a wet effect on the top half of the barrel to suggest standing water, or a rough removal of the top of it with a 3/4 full barrel of gross water - a very common site on farms, utility water; and a good tie-in with that white bucket). Loved this series, great job!
I was startled when you painted that lovely groundwork; but, blimey, the result was even better. The finished piece is amazing. 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I'm just getting started with the techniques, but oil washes and enamel panel liner have some great applications on minis.
The T-29 / T-30 is my favorite tank. I'm glad it's getting some love!
That just looks SOOOOO GOOD! I’ve never had any interest in building models, and I only discovered your channel cause I was looking for the T29E3, because it’s my absolute favorite-looking tank of all time. I’m astounded at how good/realistic this looks, and I’m mesmerized. Keep up the amazing work!
Wow! It's beautiful. Thanks for posting.
That is a beautiful diorama and has given me lots of ideas for my 1/48 crashed stuka diorama.
Stunning, absolutely stunning. A delightful video that once again highlights your sublime talents. Thanks for producing and sharing your unbelievable talents.
Awesome build. Definitely look forward to your videos. I like these diorama builds with great subject's you do, keeps me motivated to continue building my own.
That’s was awesome, totally enjoyed the whole series. Thank you
This is the best one you have done so far!!! Amazing! The size of the tank in the diorama is accentuated by the building and figures. So cool!
He improves every time, as every time he surpasses the previous model!
And every time things get bigger and bigger... and now I have space for only 1 more finished model in my case :D
Enjoyable. Really enjoyed the way you built and painted the barn and groundwork
Crazy detail.. love the tank!
It is just so satisfying to see it all come toghether. Very nice
Watched with waves of continuesly unfoulding amazement.
This is absolutely amazing it looks like somebody froze a scene from real life and shrank it I can't believe it can't help but wonder how a ww1 tank and trenches would look made to this high of specification keep up the fantastic work look forward to the next model
A abandoned Mark IV stuck in a muddy crater would look cool

Very nice finished result. As always I enjoyed all of the videos and I’m waiting to see what’s up next week. Now that I’m leaving home I’ll get into figure painting and I’ll use your figure painting videos as a way to make mine decent, hopefully. Tanks for sharing your awesome job.

the way how you said you wanted a challanged was just great and also i love the T-29-E3 or basically every tank after the sherman
