And wouldn’t it be so easy to enact a couple of laws that automatically charge cops with dereliction of duty when they refuse to cooperate in a case, just because the suspect wears the same uniform as they do. Doesn’t even matter what happens to the initial case. If it is clear that you are being uncooperative, you immediately lose your job and face jail time.

Yep, everyone officer that worked with Chauvin knew that he wasn't right, and they all did nothing for years and said nothing as he routinely took new officers under his wing for training.

Yeah I had a similar thought. Some of those who may be testifying against him are maybe saving their own skins so they're not bashed in the public eye. Though I'm sure some have good intentions though.
The term “sacrificial lamb“ implies an innocent person is being used for a negative purpose. If anything this is the opposite. An evil person is being used to bring about good.

How did a country get to the point of law enforcement actions revolving around their own safety? How did it slump to the level of subduing on the ground and kneeling on people to begin with? Absolutely. I suspect this cop murdered or maimed non-violent "suspects" before there was so much camera evidence to make coworkers realize they'd suffer more for not telling the truth than for protecting their trainer.
In all fairness he is a fairly new chief and Chauvin was on the force for like 17 years
@@BadgerCheese94 Good point, my apologies to the chief. But undoubtably there were some people on the force in positions of power for some of those 17 years, and D.C. wasn't stopped or even fired from his job despite numerous civilian complaints, which seems astonishing to me.
The police union is why he remained so long. The union makes it nearly impossible for a police chief to fire someone for aggressive behavior. The only reason he was fired was because the heinous crime was filmed for the world to see. Had there been no video, he would have gotten away with this to do again and been free to train others to do so.

The thing is that Chauvin was a bad apple. He was working with new officers that day, because all the other officers didn't want to work with that freak. This a big part of the problem. Police communities know who their bad apples are, and they do nothing about them.

my grandfather was a state trooper until 2003. before that, if he saw something wrong, he reported it and the officer was reprimanded. starting in 2000, anytime he reported a county officer or another trooper, the heads would always get extremely upset with him. finally it got to a breaking point when a sheriff told him “we have to protect each other”. my papa told him “no we protect those who cannot protect themselves” and quit on the spot. it’s become ridiculous
Blue wall of silence is a bit of a myth. Fact is most disciplinary actions from police departments are because other cops bring it to command's attention. Just because it's not done in public doesn't mean it isn't happening. Cops do get fired for misconduct

A couple months ago a wannabe narco here shot up hella cops and got away. The streets turned him in to the cops dead with a cardboard sign on his body stating this was the killer. The cops were then able to prove this was the case. ...they sacrificed him in order to maintain itself..so they thought at least.
So this "Blue Wall of Silence" is basically a fancy phrase for "covering up for my peers by making false witness".
No it is this fiction thing that people not in law enforcement made up to explain why cop are normally justified in the level of force they use.

Hate to tell you, but many police departments have independent investigation and the majority of the time they find it justified. Cops have even gone to jail for justified homicide just to appease the more because the reality is there are a lot more criminals out there willing to shot a cop then the other way around. In fact statistically cops are 33 times more likely to be killed or injured by a criminal then the other way around. People go to jail for a long time without a trail. People confes to crimes not committed by them, because they are afraid to be imprisoned even longer because of a failing justice system, that rather punishes an innocent person than leave a crime unsolved. And your prisons need their free labourers. Even children are handed over to prisons by corrupt judges. Poor people, and especially poor black people are afraid to call the cops, and that's for a reason.

I'm a nurse. And I've seen how other colleagues of mine sometimes treat patients, as if they are beneath them. But instead of looking the other way, I call them out. I always tell them the same thing: We are here to provide a service. We are not better than them, we NEED them. Because without patients, we are nothing. We wouldn't have a job. And we wouldn't have a paycheck.... Simple as that.

For me it's all across the board, because ONE funk up messes it up for the rest of us. From the receptionists to the doctors. I found out that our office manager, of many years, was doing something behind one of the doctors' back. She was fired.
The saying 'treat someone, like you would like to be treated yourself, comes to mind. People in your line of work, do an amazing job. But there will always be a one or two that let the side down.

While by no means proof that it is gone or anything there are also many cases of officers reporting other officers you just won't see these covered the same as why report the positives? Of course, it is still a massive issue and needs to be addressed but there are also plenty of officers who have good conduct and report bad conduct. There was a recent case of 4 officers on scene when one used excessive force on an arrested suspect and all 3 other officers independently reported the incident. Just to add on: obviously this example should absolutely be the norm not the exception and thats the problem but people need to realize it isnt all black and white there is plenty of grey. An officer being harassed by the public for their job may be one who has reported several peers for misconduct and is doing everything in their power to help make the system a much better one.
Good on them for doing the right thing, but we still have a loooooong way to go. At least it's a step in the right direction

Cops that are called for backup or are also at the scene should definitely be charged as an accomplice. I totally agree. Now after chauvin is convicted let's bring in the other officers at the scene holding him down and convict them as well. It's time for accountability.

The blue wall absolutely exists, I'll explain why. When your a cop, military, firefighter, etc... In those high-risk jobs, you get a mindset that is your team versus the world. “No one will have your back but the guy next to you” was routinely mentioned. Don't anger said guy, they might not be there to have your back when you need them most. Not including you are usually spending more time with your coworkers than you are with your actual family, going through much harder situations that most people can not relate to. This creates the perfect environment to force people to decide between doing what is considered more right and doing what's easier for personal reasons or safety. Also take into account that these are high-risk and pressured jobs, just like any employment people will mess up. There is a difference between a bad call, and a blatant action though. Just food for thought.

As an SEN teacher, working with some very challenging and aggressive students, I was taught re managing this potential or actual aggressive behaviour, by folk who had worked with psychiatric patients. We were taught to de-escalate, to manage the situation with the least physical intervention, to ‘let go’ , but if necessary to re engage, then let go, re engage. There are easy ways to turn a person from prone to supine. Especially with an adequate number of persons to do this. It’s still possible to do without enough ‘strength’. NEVER keep someone prone! EVER! Always manage the head of a person, to make sure they are ok. ALWAYS. That kind of restraint needs monitoring very closely. Shame on you. This is pretty basic training.

@Mr. H Dr Lindsey Thomas, the prosecution's witness, said it looked like, "Heart failure" and if not that it looked like, "Drug overdose". Floyd had both of those: a heart problem and 3x the lethal dose of Fentanyl in his body.

This trial has been hard to watch. I’ve cried a few times for George, and so e of the bystanders. The prosecution has been good, and so far the defense is weak. I’m afraid of what kind of BS the defense will bring up for their case. I hope George, his family, and black folks all over this country get justice!

Truth, facts, massive amounts of video, The countries BEST most respected experts, and incredible lawyers. The defense is trying to do one thing. Put George on trial. The arrests only happened MONTHS LATER only after the video started trending.... So having video evidence isn't enough against cops/ex-cops, it must gain national attention
Everyone can learn something from the narrator of this video. She was unbiased, well spoken and non-volitile in her presentation of the facts. I think a lot of people would feel more compelled to listen to one another if they had the same poise and etiquette that she has. Very well done!

It genuinely isn't though... there are ways to hold down a suspect who is resisting and this was not one. Specifically because of how it can impact the suspect. Also the suspect needs to be resisting for an officer to need to be restraining them which Floyd was not so twice he broke training protocol. Show me where what he did appears in training manuals, please.
One Derek chauvin is on trail for many Derek chauvin's. Justice for floyd will hopefully stop many more Goarge Floyd's. But we have a long way to go and lot more hard work to do.

Why is this still going on? Takes too long to convict a suspect caught on camera with overwhelming testimony.
Because he had so many drugs in his his system & underlying health issues. Stated he couldn’t breathe inside the police car. A knee to the neck doesn’t cause cardiac arrest. We need to hear from multiple doctors what caused the cardiac arrest

In the department I worked for we were trained to intervene when you see a fellow officer start to lose control whether it be their professionalism or using too much force. Intervention saves law suits and possibly jobs . In this case the officer should have been pushed off and the suspect allowed to breath . Tell him Rigo take a walk then report it to a supervisor. A man would’ve had his life and the officer would’ve been disciplined accordingly . I truly believe there is no more wall of silence anymore based on new training and cameras .

@@gabrielcarter4822 From experience, 1983. Public services Boston was subject to positive discrimination legislation like other US cities. However, the unions that are supposed to represent ALL members, drew up union deals with the employers that halted the promotion of black public servants for many years and because black employees were in the minority, still do. It was SO EASY. Promotion became based on length of service only and not intellect, capability or professionalism. So the newest recruit has to wait decades before getting to first base.

No! No more silence! It exists, and we'd be liars to deny it.
Sadly, while it may be receiving damage it won't ever go away. Also, I hate when people think it's complicity that keeps good officers quiet. It's the threat of reprisals in a career where you have to depend on someone to potentially save your life. All it takes is someone deciding they don't want to respond to your call for backup as fast as they possibly could and you end up injured or worse. The worst part of it is, the people who leave you for dead just shrug it off and it never comes up.
All it takes is for politicians to enact laws that target corrupt cops and for a bit of a shakeup in the justice system to make sure that prosecutors do not hesitate to charge police officers. Once the laws are in place and two or three hesitant prosecutors lose their careers, heads will start rolling. The only problem there is that the politicians in America are also amongst the most corrupt of any developed country and getting them to do the right thing will be hard.

My older brother delivers furniture for a furniture shop in Minneapolis. A while back during a delivery, my brother and his boss witnessed two white Minneapolis cops beating up a black man in a residential alleyway. Without hesitation, the two parked the truck and got out to help him fight off the cops. After the cops fled, the black man thanked my brother and his boss and invited them over for bbq. They became friends and attended many bbq over the years. That black man was Gorge Floyd. RIP brother.
At the most, they'll let this guy take the wrap, pat themselves on the back for doing the right thing, and then go right back to George Flloyding more people.

Thinking about TV... how many times the “heroes” lie to internal affairs and it’s part of the story? How many times internal affairs is shown as the bad guys on fiction?
Perhaps the entire concept of "internal affairs" investigations is the biggest part of the problem; perhaps excessive use of force should always be investigated by an external team of experts with more authority, such as the federal government. This is a big part of creating a racist institution, making it accountable only to itself. It needs to cease.
@@chrissnyder8108 Definitely, and there really needs to be a centralized national federal database for police misconduct so that cops can't just move from one department to another when they get outted and caught. Maybe have to carry personal liability insurance... which would essentially price them out of the insurance market if they lose lawsuits rather than always making the taxpayer front the cost of those cases. And of course, police unions' backs need breaking.
