Tony Northrup reviews the amazing Sigma 15mm f/1.4 Art lens, the first fisheye lens with professional sharpness and light-gathering capability. The lack of geometric correction creates incredible optical qualities for astrophotography, in particular, and it shows almost zero coma when looking close-up at stars.
It's also a really compelling lens for street and travel photography, providing an interesting perspective on the regular world. Straight lines become curved; boring subjects become interesting.

  • Always love when a company flexes like this. It's nice to see a company push the boundaries even if I'm not remotely interested in buying something like this.

    • 10 Years ago Adorama had an A7 for sale at a great price. I purchased it and was feeling so happy I got it for a few hundred dollars off. The next day they emailed me saying it was a pricing error, they wont honour it, and they cancelled my order. I promised myself to never shop with them again, I’ve gone on to spend over 20 thousand dollars with their competition. Sure, they may of lost a few bucks selling me the A7, but by not honouring the sale they lost a customer, and thousands of dollars in sales. I also tell my photographic friends about this so they also don’t use Adorama. Always look after your customers…..

  • Hey Tony, thanks for clearing up the macro situation! As soon as I saw the title I nearly jumped out of my skin because my main lens is the former Sigma 15mm fisheye and I use it exclusively for macro wildlife photography, so I appreciate you making the important caveat about this one not being great for macro, rather than find it out myself after purchase

  • I appreciate you adding the corner sharpness and up-close sharpness as a part of your review. It helps paint a much clearer picture of the abilities and shortcomings of the lens.

  • Thats such a cool lens, like the Porsche photo you have to really challenge yourself and think in a whole different way then with a fish eye or a ordinarie wide angle lens and that is the fun part with this lens

  • 10 years ago I bought canon 8-15 f4 fisheye and never looked back. To straighten lines it can be adjusted in lightroom.

  • Not sure how many professional astrophotographers are needed in the world. But I think this is aimed at serious astro enthusiasts, and there are plenty of them.

    • Yeah I think most professional astrophotographers are probably employed by camera & lens manufacturers to help sell their gear to enthusiasts.

  • The lens looks fantastic, I've always loved Sigma lenses. I can see a lot of people getting it and loving it. I would like to try it at some point. But I absolutely love my Sony 14 mm F1.8. It is so light, so sharp. And frankly I can get a lot of the fisheye effects from it photoshop and other editing tools (if I wanted it).

  • Interesting informative review, thanks! At 15mm I swear by my Laowa f2 Zero-D which is my Milky Way and aurora lens and also my ultra wide close-up lens for unusual and spectacular wildflower photos. It also produces produces sharp 14 point aperture stars (the 7 blade Sony E model - other mounts have 5 blades with 10 point stars just like Loxias with their 10 blades). Shot in aps-c crop or cropped in post it's resolution rivals my Zeiss Loxia 21 (30" wide acrylic print of the Snaefellsnes coast above my desk taken in 2019). It's failing is lack of weather sealing, but I don't shoot astro in rain.

  • I'll take the 14mm f1.4 from Sigma instead, but this does reinforce why an open lens mount matters. I have a hard time imagining any of the first parties producing something like this, so it's nice to have third parties out there who can fill in those "gaps" (for lack of a better word). I maintain this is Sony's primary advantage over Canon and even Nikon to an extent...both make incredible gear, but neither give you this much access to this much weirdo native glass. Good on you Sigma for making stuff like this, and I hope other body manufacturers come around to Sony's way of thinking, here.

  • Sigma is soo cool delivering such an expensive, very niche lens. Very,VERY few needs it, but it`s there for those who actually need it! I know a photographer up in the high north of Norway, doing aurora photography professionally, and I guess he is drooling as we speak...😅

  • On Canon, you have even larger angle, but even not Fisheye rectilinear !!! This is the 14mm Laowa. For fisheye, you have enven larger angle: 11mm, made by TTartisan. Both are manual length, but for this focal, this is not a problem at all. This Sigma is really to big to be really used in practice.... Except Astro-phto, with tripod, but for the rest, I prefer smaller lens...

  • Too bad Sigma doesnt take in account Full Dome production and VR (also not considered by this reviewer). Full dome used to be mostly about the stars so in a sense, that review covers this part of it. However, immersive formats have broadened: LED domes like Cosm and MSG Sphere and VR productions (Apple Vision Pro and Meta). These productions need fisheye lenses that can capture at extreme resolutions (8K and beyond) in 180 degree like this lens. The issue being that these need 180 horizontally (not diagonally) and personally I think we'd prefer RF Mount (for Red V-Raptor) or G-mount for Fujifilm GFX100 (timelapse photography).

    @fabricelorenceau4020@fabricelorenceau40202 ай бұрын
  • Personally I think not many astro photographers are in the market for a fisheye, because these shots generally have the horizon in the bottom of the shot. With the distortion, this makes the horizon bend up, so you have to correct for this, and that correction blurs the corners! Another group that loves using fisheyes are underwater photographers, and they are begging for a mirrorless fisheye with AF. But this will not do, because the lens doesn't have the required close focus capabilities.

    @Eikenhorst@Eikenhorst2 ай бұрын
    • I agree with you however many other reviewers have pointed out this exact issue with the caveat that if you stop down to f2.8 then you get absolute sharpness corner to corner! I think it would an make amazing lens for underwater stuff however I don’t think there is any housing that could fit it (please correct me if I’m wrong)
