historical changes in pugs over time

  • I honestly like the old pugs better

  • Most people want a Pug that is fat, which is a very poor health choice and breathing issues increase due to the over weightiness, and the eyes that pop out are due to them having leashes around their neck. I have a taller pug who is very active and yes he snores but he is definitely not overweight.

  • Heartbreaking. I don't understand the hostile comments. K. Price has a concern for the future of the breed, as do I. I have 2 pugs that I love with all my heart; one of which has gone blind from cataracts and PRA. I want to see the future health of the breed improve because they are such awesome companions.

  • It's sad to see what's happened to the breed over time... But these little guys are the way they are now because of us so we need to show them love and companionship just like any other dog. While I do adore my pug Dante's features, I am aware of the potential health problems which is why I take care of him. Over time, I do hope to see the breed become healthier as I'm scared for the potential of future health issues with my little guy and future pugs I will own

  • Thank you for the video. I confess that my pug Dave was from a "backyard breeder" ( the parents lived in the house and were well cared for), he has a less pronounced nose roll, a less curly tail, longer legs, and a thinner body, what many in the Pug Communtiy refer to as a "Victorian Pug" as a result, he is the picture of health at age 11 save for PK that has developed in the past year or so. My first Pug was breed standard and suffered from CDM and died at 13. I agree it is time for a change!

  • this video just made me cry, i have a pug, too. And i worry myself about him, i'm looking to keep his claws short (normally not necessary, but since my pug grew up with a "finger" who is shorter and the others, i have to cut the claw), so when he scratchs his face he does not get hurt at an eye, clean up everyday his nose wrinkle, but i know myself that there are diseases or disc problems that i can't prevent. And in a few months he is going to have a surgery so he can breath better.

  • Having your pet happy doesnt mean he is healthy Some people spoil them too much and overfeed them without consulting a vet. Mine isnt overweight nor far nor even wrinckled. I've taken good care of her health and exercise.

  • i think more 98% of the domesticated dogs we all keep as pets today are all the products of breeding, in-breeding, human intervention.. not 1 dog bred that i know of has stayed the same since the beginning of the domestication of dogs... all have been tampered with to achieve "perfection" or so they call it.

    @dreamreap@dreamreap11 жыл бұрын
  • The problem isn't their appearance. The problem is the Victorian model of breeding, (i.e. "pure bloodlines" and such) which is pre-mendelian genetics inheritance theory. We now know that Mendelian genetics (along with Darwin's observations, etc.) based breeding is the way to go, and in fact it is used in every other non-pet breeding programs. The Victorian method of breeding "pedigree" animals reinforces bad genes because of it's flawed central theory, and as a result the animals get sick. The breeders need to abandon Victorian breeding standards and work to identify the problem genes and breed with dogs that don't have the problem genes. The dogs will retain their appearance(s) and the illness and deformity will become increasingly rare. Eventually it should be possible to eliminate all harmful traits entirely. The sooner we ditch a 130 year out of date scientific theory the better.

  • This pug lover agrees with both the video post and this comment. To say pugs were one way based upon Euorpean paintings of the past doesn't do justice to the breed. There are many reasons for the different looks. But because of some crazy aesthetic, there are many pugs bred with conformational issues that limit their health. This is not unique to only pugs, but this wonderful breed should serve as a reminder to all who purchase purebreds to only support selected breeders who breed for health

  • Very nice effort! There are some famous early 18th century paintings that you did not include: Madame de Ventadour with Portraits of Louis XIV and his Heirs, France, 1715 - 1720, in the Wallace Collection is the earliest I'm aware of. Antoine Pesne, Portrait of Anna Orzelska with a pug, circa 1728, National Museum, Warsaw, is another.

  • I have owned the long legged pure bred chow chows. Today's chows are short legged, shorter fatter rump and a shorter nose. At present I own a pug mix, long legged, longer nose and skinny body. Give me the old breed dogs any day. Same body manipulation is done to cats too.

  • (Cont2) Surely there are certain conditions that cannot be treated and the pug will suffer if not euthanized, which is horrible. Any pug 'parent' will say that pugs are AMAZING and loving, and such a wonderful, lively, happy breed. We have been SO lucky to only deal with a few problems with Ella (my Pug). I'm so sorry for the loss of Rupert. :-( Lastly, Ella and I say hi to all from Seattle, Wa! Pugs RULE! :-)

  • I really do not understand the kennel club. Why do they allow such inbred dogs to compete in shows. I meet people regularly who say they love pugs. If their own children were born with such deformities there would be a feature on a sensational documentary searching for a surgeon who is willing to help. Often pugs come up to play with my fit and lively dog. They are snorting and trying to breathe out of their ears and the owners are oblivious to their suffering Some actually find it sweet. Pugs are pure deformities and people should not be allowed to breed nor buy them.

  • Pugs are the best breed in the world. It's amazing how Pugs looked different back then and now there is a new breed called a Puggle (Pug +beagle) and they look just like the way Pugs used to look - lol

  • Excellent video, informative and eye opening. Thank you for making it and trying to spread awareness of these issues. Hopefully people will increasingly opt for pugs with longer legs and snouts and without the curled tail. HrHaakon - cats are not exempt from the problems of inbreeding and purebreeding - the persian cat is in just as poor a state as the pug (if not worse). They also suffer from flat faces, bulging weepy eyes and pinched nostrils. Sphinx cats suffer multiple health problems too, as do manx cats (some of whom must be euthanized after birth due to missing anuses and genitals). I have cats however I have always had moggies, I find them more intelligent and far healthier than any purebred cat. It sounds like you also keep moggies, but please be aware that there ARE people intentionally breeding purebred cats with health defects. I am not against all purebreds - there are dogs bred for working purposes (e.g. sheepdogs) and noble purposes (e.g. guide dogs) that are very much still needed in society, however the extreme breeds bred purely for looks need fixing before they self destruct with their health issues.

  • I have a pug, Ella, and she is 10 years old. I've had her since she was 8 weeks, and over time become very familiar with the problems pugs can have. I will say that certain genetic disorders and conditions specific to the breed CAN be dealt with and regular vet care can keep some of these problems from getting out of hand. Regular face and ear cleanings can help keep those nasty infections away. My Ella is currently getting eye drops to combat the keratinizing eye issues. (Cont.)

  • CamFlockaFlame. I'm sure you won't have many people trying to discredit you as you are done a good job on your own. It is through selective breeding that the breathing troubles have come about. You say you have pugs and yet appear to know nothing about any of the problems they as a breed have. I have seen the breathing problems that occur also the Skin fold dermatitis and heart problems and that's without actually owning a pug,.although I do know many "peopole" that do.

  • I'm a pug owner and I've known that the pug has changed over the last 100 or so years. But saying that the changes in pugs are why they have health issues is drawing a pretty thin line between correlation and causation. Health issues can affect any purebred dog. If you get a dog from a reputable breeder AND take proper care of your pug, those issues can be mitigated. My pug is healthy, happy and NOT overweight (his weight is always 18-20lbs). From his vet to the place where I board him when I'm out of town, I'm told that he's a rarity as MOST of the pugs they see are overweight. You want a healthy pug? Don't overfeed them. The result will be worth it. Your pug will be more active, less gassy, and snore less. I'll be waiting for the video explaining that overfeeding your dog leads to health issues. .

  • My pug is more of a "throwback". He has longer legs, more of a snout (though it's not a full snout) and when on all fours, his nose comes up to my knee. He's purebred and registered with a pedigree, so the genes still exist. :-) HOWEVER, many of the historical English "pugs" you have featured in this video are NOT purebreds.

    @KristalM@KristalM10 жыл бұрын
  • You sound as though you love this breed, but if you love the ancient Pug then why would you defend the modern one? They are hardly the same dog anymore and many of them suffer genetic conditions that could well have been prevented through good breeding practices using genetic diversity. Although there were 10,000 Pugs registered in the UK in 2008 only 50 of them had a completely separate gene pool. Inbreeding only passes the diseases on. If you love these dogs you would be apalled.

  • I understand the desire to "Turn back the clock". But I think the question is: "Can that still be done"? Especially with the current breeding pactices. And can it be done, should it be? Pugs are dangerously imbred as it seems and what if mixing them with other dog-lines only results in having the genes for these faults spread around more? I think line breeding will do absolutely nothing for these dogs, no matter in what way they are carried out. And also how many will welcome the changes made?

  • I think the problem could be the early historical portraits were painted by shit artists! My pug is gorgeous but I bought him from a reputable breeder, he's fifth generation pedigree, KC registered and was expensive but worth every penny. He is the family pet, he's been done, I did not buy him to breed. I've seen so called Pugs that are obvious cross breeds, they just looks strange, much like those old paintings.
