In this video I want discuss with you guys what went wrong with this S63TU engine and what could be done to avoid the so dreaded catastrophic failure.
This engine is out of a 2013 BMW F10 M5 and had traveled 100.000kms before it seized. It was on a stage 2 map producing around 700HP according to the owners.
Stay tuned for episode number 2 where I will update you guys with a plan on exactly how we are going to proceed with this engine rebuild.
If you are unaware of the twin turbo V8 BMWs, the S63 and the N63 are pretty much the same engines with a few different components such as turbos, manifolds, cams - the assembly and dismantling of these engine are the same.
Great videos, one of the most underrated channels on YT
Thank you ! It’s always great receiving that sort of feedback from fellow BMW enthusiasts
Seriously, this guy really shows his confidence in his experience well done Sir!!
Unbelievable talent. I can’t believe how much you have just stripped this engine with absolute and total confidence in your ability. Best of all you enjoy doing it. I’d let you work on any of my BMW M cars anytime at all. Great work my friend.
Excellent break down of the engine. The shop that did the maintenance definitely allowed something to get into the engine... shame.
Agree, it also goes to show why it pays of to take these cars to a shop who understand them. After all the owner paid $9k for new lifters and seals on bank 2 when the initial problem was actually a bent rod, causing the ticking noise.
@@dnl35projectsthat’s such an L it’s robbery
@dnl35projects I’ve recently purchased a 2013 550i N63 xDrive w/ 154k mi. that has engine issues. I don’t have access to the car yet as its in transit but I have a video of the running engine where you can hear the current status. Let me know your thoughts based on your experience what I might be looking at for repairs. Thx! kzhead.info/sun/lpWSnc9uboWfeo0/bejne.htmlsi=Dm_rmpPzDpKzc9Og
I can imagine the smile on the owner's face when he saw his engine being taken out of the car after months, marking the beginning of the journey towards putting this bad boy back on the road.
He is definitely happy and given the background story on how it failed I can say I’m probably just as excited as the owner to see the car back on road 🤣
@aam77 bad boy alright, absolutely insane car…an M5 is a must own in your lifetime
@@duffydon1741had an E60 for like 6 months. Got a smoking deal on it and kept it for a bit but was always nervous about that V10 letting go so I sold it.
I don’t often subscribe to channels but I had to to yours. It’s nice to get the whole break down easy to understand.
Thank you !
You are indeed the top guy! Awesome video! I learned a lot about that pickup tube for sure.
Glad you liked it! Thanks
What a brilliant video. Your manor and positivity with a can do attitude is sensational let’s hope you can fix it and it runs perfect. How you could put it back to get her perfectly is beyond me
Thank you ! We finally managed to get the remaining parts and should be making a "part 2 video" pretty soon !
love the content. more bmw tt stuff like this would be awesome.
Thank you ! The plan is to document the full rebuild process
Great job you are doing first time i see you direct I subscribe to your channel keep it up 🤝
Thank you so much 😁
Nice work! Some great production quality with somebody who knows what their talking about. Motivates me to pull my engine for a refresh. I'm at 144k mls
Go for it ! The best time to rebuild these engines is when they are still running fine. If doing the job yourself the whole rebuild/refresh should cost no more than $5k
Thank you always for the good videos. I have the N63 engine.
Glad you like them!
Awesome video with great explanations. Thanks
Thanks !
Once again awesome work
Thank you !
This is an excellent video! keep up the good work. Cant wait for the next episode so I know what to do with my own blown S63!
I’m sorry to hear that Paul, but on the bright side you’ll have the opportunity to rebuild it with forged rods and push it past the 800Hp mark 🤣
Fantastic work!
Thank you !
This was rather interesting because you found chunks in the block and a massive piece in the combustion chamber. I am not sure about fin density of the intercooler on these things but usually it is not large enough to allow plastic bags to go through. I also dont know how RH bank has plastic bits in the cylinder head meanwhile LH bank has chunks in the combustion chamber. Never felt more puzzled about a blown engine before 😂
Me neither ! And even though the engine is being repaired I’m still killing myself trying to understand how these parts ended up there, inside and outside the engine 🤣
i think someone at the previous place didn't like the owner personaly and sabotaged his engine. no way such large plastic pieces got through the oil filter & pump and made whole into the engine so they could melt inside the combustion chamber.
Someone added sugar too gas
Great video! Lots of great information!!
Thank you very much !
Very informative 👍🏻🔥
Thank you !
The main difference on cylinder heads N63 S63 and S68 is the eccentric camshaft, there is 2 different types of exhaust valves which s63 uses both of them it depends the variant and the other difference is the spark plugs. On the opposite side of the vvt motor is the cylinder head identification numbers the first 2 digits 34or23 is where the head manufactured inside bmw or contractor and the 4after is the production date of the head !Follow to see the way u gonna assembly the intake springs without special tools!
There is way of assembling those springs without the tool but im actually buying one
Just got X5M S63 this weekend. I suspect I will be watching all your videos so I know what is involved in repairing and what to do to avoid problems. Can you do a video on cleaning out the oil line next time you do oil change?
Hi Thanks ! What exactly you meant by cleaning the oil line ? (is that the oil cooler lines?)
@@dnl35projects yes, sorry didn't get the name right.
Another great video!
Thank you very much !
wonder if they started it without the intercoolers off and picked up a plastic bag (or a boost rag). Would be interesting to see if there is any sign of the plastic after intercoolers but before the inside of the cylinders. Perhaps in the plenums or intake valves.
I thought the same but could not find plastic anywhere else on the intake and it definitely wouldn’t make through the intercoolers
Great demonstration, holding your nose and mouth = blocked filter..
Hahaha it was a bit silly but effective 😂
Very cool subd and great job thank you 👍
Awesome thank you!
can you show us the back of the intake valves so we can see how the factory PCV system was working?
Hi, I’m unable to upload a photo here but they are actually really clean and I was surprise to see how well the PCV was working. The M5 have a S63TU engine which is a massive improvement compared to the original S63 in some of my other videos, the PCV/CCV on the TU is 10 times better in many ways
@@dnl35projects Thats good to know. I have an N63TU, and it's my understanding the N63TU shares the same PCV system. And according to the BMW technical reference guide, they both have the same forged rods and same forged crank. I know the rods are weak when making power levels but at least it's something.
Thanks!
Thank you for your support !
Absolute champion. Love the video. I hope your trip overseas was good. Looks like a plastic bag was in his engine lol
Thanks !
thats wild. Like literally a plastic parts bag was left in the motor. would be cool if the owner could ask the shop or deduce what could of happened.
He complaint about the ticking noise that was still present when picking up the car but they blamed it on the tune ☹️
Amazing video. So sad the tech left trash in the engine.
Thanks ! Yes that an 100% avoidable issue
Couldn’t find the video where you’re talking about the oil pickup tube please link if you can or make a video about it I don’t see any videos on KZhead of people talking about it thanks
Hi, it’s the video where I’m sharing the Timing chain issues on the N63 and S63 engines
Is there no warning sensor regards to the oil throughput\pressure ? I guess one would not factor out sabotage of that engine with that amount of junk in the top of the block ?
There is definitely a pressure sensor on the S63 / N63 engines however I believed it wasn't triggered or the person driving the car failed to realise the light was on.
thank you
👍
I've seen a 2011 bmw n63 550i with 190,000 MILES on it for sale on autotrader. Pretty cool how someone got it to that mileage
If they get to rebuild the engine while it hasn't failed that is probably around $4k in parts and the car will do another 190k miles !
How much would a rebuild be for the s63 f10 with forged parts?
if it was serviced it might be the bag the new air filter came in its the only thing that can get passed the filter and through the valves
Yes but it was also inside the oil and timing components
Nice tear down, yes something has definitely gone through the engine, but for that much hard plastic material in there im wondering if its come from the engine itself , something like chain guides or breather system or intake runners(does the engine have variable intake sleves runners?-im unfamiliar with this engine ,i have an E60 n62 & E39 m54) its just strange no turbo damage with so much hard plastic on top of piston, also the piston with the large plastic deposit on top how is the valves for that cylinder does it have evidence of this plastic..... anyway just a few thoughts i was having, but once again great video (i only came across it by accident)keep up the good work im a new follower also based here in Australia.
Hi Peter, yes plenty of mysterious plastic bits inside and out of this engine. Definitely not from the intake as they are both intact and with this engine having inter coolers anything coming from the outside would get trapped on them if not in the air filter. Thanks for watching !
I think that maybe it was liquid form first, and heat and pressure make it hard and plastic. Maybe it was something for oil lines and when it got thru the pcv or similar syclone system, then it past the intake valve and top of the piston, becouse breathing. That way no Air filter and intercooler done nothing to filter it out.
I wonder if it had a service and the oil filter was left in the clear plastic when placed in the housing.
Is it possible that plastic is from one of the caps on the oil bottles, or the plastic film that covers the bottle hole?
It is a lot of plastic, and it’s intriguing cause I found in 3 different places: outside the engine, inside in timing guides & sump, also on top of a piston !
@@dnl35projectsunbeliable. Halloween 🧟
Hi mate ive got a 2012 M5 stage 2 MHD & XHP tunes car drives great has a very extensive service history and even had all 8 injectors replaced, for peace of mind and the fact i plan on keeping it a long time im looking at getting it rebuilt how much roughly would you charge for a rebuild on an s63tu without any major issues? Love the content by the way!
First of all, congratulations for thinking that way ! The best time to rebuild these engines is when they still run fine. With that in mind and considering your injectors have been replaced I'd say around $5k in parts (USD) plus labour which will vary depending on which country you are (another $5-10k) I'm about to put a video together about the costs and potential issues of the S63 and N63 rebuild
Hey man, what engine oil do you recommend to use in this engine? I just did my rod bearings
Hi, I use full Synthetic 5w40 or you could also use 5w30 - my recommendation is that you stick with the oil specs BMW requires. Many people suggest you should use different oil but I completely disagree. If you had the bearings done you are well aware of the potential issues of trashing the car while the engine is still cold 🤣
Contrary to popular belief, and depending on how scratched that cylinder is, one can hone an Alusil block. It takes some special stones and techniques, but it is much preferred over sleeving.
Unfortunately very few places worldwide can do that sort of job and nobody in Australia - the good thing about sleeving the block is that cast iron sleeves will support much more boost so your engine actually becomes stronger, which is preferred if you’re considering pushing the power levels to the limit
I did it with basic tools in my garage to a cylinder on my S85 engine. The cylinder just needs a basic hone and then a polish using AN-30 paste with felt pads on the honer. BMW will sell you an oversized piston with rings.
Can u please do e60 m5 like that step by steps engine rebuild
LOL I hope not because I own one 🤣🤣🤣 jokes I’d love to do one as long as it’s not my car - I could actually do yours if you’re in Australia 🇦🇺
@@dnl35projects get dji mic they sound great
What a sad story. 😢 I'm curious what did they forget in the engine to cause all this damage
Yes that’s true ! If it wasn’t for that plastic the engine could have been rebuilt with less than $5k - now we need new crank, rods and pistons
Hello, I rebuilt my engine on my g12 750li, but the gear shifter does not work ( no light is on), but the ignition gets on, but the engine still doesn't crank(like the car does not want to crank it ?). Are there any relais to check ? I dy replaced the negative wire at the rear axle(under the car). I have no clue what it could be. The car also almost completely emptied the battery when the ignition was on while I was looking for the errors (Gutmann Diagnostic)
Is the trasmission terminal plugged in ? (on the transmission side and the main plug on the wire/conection box)
@dnl35projects there is a cable with a round connector at the back of the transmission I think and one behind that that goes into a control Unit on the Transmission and they are plugged in
And the 2 control units that are on the right and on the left of the engine bay are also all connected with all cables
I wished you'd poured the oil again but after removing the debris so that we'd see the difference in the flow through the tube.
That was my plan but the wife called and and I had to run 😂 However, that is literally just a bent pipe
Are you able to take my 2013 m5 and repair the engine? From what I know the rod bearings are going out and coolant is leaking into the engine oil
Hi, the best time to rebuild these engines is before it is seized 🤣 it’s a lot cheaper too ! Send us an email and I’ll be happy to help if you live nearby.
Let me know when you need the ecu flashed I can do this remotely and flash back to stock
Hi, please send me a DM with your contact info - you can find my email at the channel homepage
Why did you edit out the removal of the valvtronics? Extremely important step.
Hi, the valvetronics were in perfect condition and is a pretty straight forward procedure with the right tools - I’ll include that in the assembly video.
@@dnl35projects I appreciate the response:). I’m replacing my valvetronic and cannot see the bottom bolt hold it on. Only about 2” inches to work with. Any help would be highly appreciated:)
Im not a mechanic but love doing small jobs om my Car but Can you Pls tell me how The hell do ypu remember where everything is going when you asemble The whole thing :)
That’s a fair question 🤣 well, I’m used to working on these cars but if it’s the first time you’re doing something I’d recommend you taking hundreds of photos, step-by-step and using small ziplock bags to organize/identify all bolts - When putting things back together you just go through the photos in reverse order - that kind of help figuring out what goes where 👍
so are you saying every oil change drop the pan and check the filter?
Absolutely NOT ! But if you just bought the car or had some major service (internal components) done recently, wouldn’t hurt spend $30 on a gasket and drop the pan during your next oil change.
Are there 4 Vanos solenoids on the S63?
Yes, one solenoid to control each vanos (one per camshaft)
What was there in the pickup tube net anyway? That was not sludge
There was some sludge but also something that looks like the remains of a blastocyst bag of some sort
How much does a rebuilt like this would end up cost? Thanks
Hi, if we correctly source the parts I’m estimating around USD $10k plus the labour component (man hour) which is another $5-10k Please keep in mind the prices should vary a lot depending on what exactly is wrong and how the engine seized. I’m planning on making a video underlining all costs once the rebuild is completed.
How did that lump of plastic ? Get on top of the piston. That's not possible for something of that size ,unless deliberately put in there.
I’m thinking the same
Something was left inside this engine from a prior repair. Debris couldn’t have been “sucked” in through the intake tract as it would get caught up on the intercoolers.
I Agree
The fact that crankshaft has got that hot it is destroyed it would’ve alter the molecular structure of the steel, getting that hot. It would now be very hard and very brittle It will definitely snap and I doubt machine shop would even touch it
Interesting to know that. It got sent to the professional crank repairers for tests and I'm yet to hear from them but will update you guys soon 👍
@@dnl35projects if it was me, I would not trust that crankshaft ever again heat is a serious thing when it comes to steel
Why is the oil blocked easier in this engine than other engines? They all have oil-pickup’s?
The hole in the pick-up is way too small!
It’s not easier or harder, the pickup tube will block in any engine with that much of gunk and plastic in the oil.
This is perfect example of why you should do your own oil change 🤷🏾♂️
That’s the best way to ensure it’s done properly
That is why I, and only I change the oil on my cars, period. I work like a surgeon when things are open.
I agree with you ! In fact that’s how I left a high pay IT job in favours of getting my hands dirty with this oily BMWs - The satisfaction of working on your own car and getting the job done properly is priceless 👌
@@dnl35projectsyou sound exactly like m539 restorations (sreten). he did a very similar thing.
Only lack of oil in sump during hard curves caused flying bearing damadge. No plasic and rubbish things😞…
I think the evidence is pretty obvious 🤣
Absolutely I would not reuse the crank. That level of discolouration / overheating, would surely be a failure point in the future.
I’m thinking the same but still waiting on a few answers from the machine shop.
Watching 12:41 I bet there's plastic in the oil collector, and that caused an oil starvation situation, leading to the seize
Service guy wouldn't forget to take the oil filter out of the plastic bag, wouldn't he?
You’re right - the plastic and other debtors caused the oil pickup tube to block.
That was gasket maker material overheated. I’ve seen this kill many engines in my shop. Excessive gasket material causes it which is bmw says not to use it. Except 2 little small areas on front timing cover. Two lil dots nothing more. The gaskets are enough. Never use a gasket supplement
like silicone gasket ? I am really killing myself trying to find out where that's come from but its is a plausible explanation if the previous shop overuse silicone which would later on cause all that trouble. Thanks
I find that hard to believe, this stuff was clearly in a liquefied form. Dunno if RTV even can get that way, but it would take over 400F to get there, which the oil is not going to be at. You should get one of those pieces of plastic analyzed to find out what it is. Only the PCV system should go to both the oil and combustion chamber. Speaking of which, that dark fluid on the piston, what was that?
Brother, what is the biggest difference between n63 and s63?
Hi, it depend a lot on the year model you have since the N63 on the M550i (after 2020) is pretty much the same engine as the S63. For the earlier models (N63 and N63TU the main difference when compared to the S63 would be the pistons (creating a different compression ratio) , exhaust manifolds, turbos, cams and the software the engine runs on.
Thank you and good luck always. I'll wait for the next video.
형제님 n63 engine 과 s63 engine 의 가장큰 차이점은 무엇인가요?
Sorry ?
잘봤습니다. 왜 저 이물질이 엔진 안으로 들어갔는지 이상하네요. 오일 세퍼레이터의 중요성.
감사합니다. 동영상이 마음에 드셨다니 다행입니다.
Which oil engine used?
I'm not sure what oil was in the engine at the time of failure however I always use 5w40 in the S63 engine as climate here in Australia is pretty average (not too cold or too hot)
Is taking the engine out hard to do?
It’s a big / timing consuming job however it isn’t something really hard specially if you have the correct tools.
What kind of lift is that?
It’s a 3T scissor lift
I expect the workshop who did the oil-service is going to pay for everything?
I’d love to see that happening but unfortunately is a bit of a complicated scenario
can yall do me that same favor on my m5😭😭 lmk dealership sold me a lemon and im dead near stuck with it
These are great car but need the correct attention and proper maintenance. Send us and email detailing your issues and I’d be happy to help !
@@dnl35projects hey brother dont know where your email is displayed at
Its got to be plastic cover from the oil filter box or something. I cannt put a finger on it at all. And then rhe foreign material in the cylinder also plastic. What in the world. Everything is strange about this incident.
Yes, unfortunately the car went through too many hands before I got it so it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what happened
Man someone really fudged that one
Agree, its almost like it was done on purpose ... such a shame
i had an f06 m6. i loved that car dearly but anytime i had to fix or replace anything in the engine ..curse it to hell
Hehehe not too much space but still, I’d say you are lucky if the engine doesn’t have to come out 😜
How much wil this job cost if it happens to me?
Hi, it’s about $20k depending on what’s wrong with your engine
Is that plastic from a rebuild or from the factory? It probably what also clogged the oil pump. Irresponsible whoever had their hands on it the last time
The car had a bent rod which was causing a ticking noise and the other mechanics tried to fix by replacing the lifters and rockers. I’m guess they forgot something inside the engine because the bottom part was stock.
What a shame. The cleanliness indicates the oil services were not as infrequent as the mfr. schedule. Absent a plastic bag going where it did not belong, this engine would have a lengthy life.
I totally agree
Whatever they (garage) replaced they forgot about plastic bag that part came in with😂
They were careless
The car ate the serpentine belt?
Hahaha - One of the mechanics removed the belt to try turning the engine 🤣
the plastic on top of the piston is what is driving me nuts,,,, it had to be placed in the intake and inside the engine at the same time,,,,so mostly sabotage
I’m thinking the same and actually hurts me not knowing exactly how it ended up there
Great video, it look like someone let something go into the engine intentionally or on accident.
Yes, I feel bad for the owner of that car who is going to spend some extra $10k on the rebuild because of clogged oil pump and spun bearings
You could do with a Bluetooth lapel microphone ✅
Thanks, I’m looking at a few options at the moment - may I ask if you’re referring to the echo in the videos or because you couldn’t hear me talking at some point ?
My guess plastic is some kind of engine oil addative
Yes, it's been hard to find a plausible explanation :)
Great video, puts me right off an M5 😂
They are great cars but you have to budget proper maintenance if you are planning to own one.
That looks like plastic or some kind of epoxy resin!😅 and it's all over the place. If un-properly cured resin got in intake or something like that, even in small amounts it could destroy the engine
Yes very suspicious
Unrelated rant: I still wish bmw would do a simple v8 with supercharger like the dead reliable hellcat and old amg motors. Every bmw m engine has had serious mechanical problems and it’s honestly not acceptable. They always overcomplicate their engine designs then have multiple later versions to fix issues. N54, N63, etc. They could really eliminate v8 engines and just run the turbo 6 in 5 series with similar power levels because bmw does 6 cylinders best.
The V8s are beautiful engines, their main issue however is that people would still rely on the BMWs suggested 15k kms oil change interval and although it will be fine for the first 100k kms the engines are set to fail after that - ano the bright side, most of the issues can be rectified before the engine blows up but the majority of people who buy these cars at over 100k kms just rely on hope 🤣
👍
Doesn't explain exactly what is that foreign material found 🤔
That’s something I really would like to know as well ! Let me know if you have any clues
@dnl35projects oil bottle cap maybe 🤔 fell in then again how did it get to pistons ? Unless it melted to a think liquid
maybe the engine pulled in a plastic bag through the intake?
Yes that could be but how would it end up in the oil pickup tube ? That’s the misters 🧐
@@dnl35projects melted the plastic and went through the piston rings somehow is my guess.
It looks like to me someone sabotaged this car on purpose when they work on it 👍🏻
It seems like it
It's called SABOTAGED ENGINE. 🙄🍻
I agree
Too many great BMW engines ate ruined by incompetent wrench turning parts swappers. There should be laws requiring them to record and prove they are acountable for their negligence.
I agree, it’s hard to trust some so-called mechanics now days 🤣
Well… it is a BMW V8 engine after all.
👍
BMW v8 born to spin bearing caps
Looks like the previous shop purposely sabotaged the engine but shoving a plastic bag thru the oil cap.
A plastic bag through the oil cap is very plausible explanation - I’m really intrigued to know exactly what happened.
Yes looks like this was done on purpose, some sort of revenge act possibly? Plastic bag into the oil cap is from someone who knows how to damage an engine but in a slow way ie it won’t fail immediately so tracking who did it will be difficult
Drop another engine in
That’s a risky thing to do as you never know the real condition of an used engine. We are getting this one done right as the owner wants to keep the car for a long time
I really hope whoever dropped a plastic bag or a glove inside the engine pays for the rebuild.
That would be ideal 😂
Stretan from M59 would be horrified by the actions of the previous shop
I think anyone with a bit of understanding would feel sorry for the owner. If the car had been diagnosed correctly it would only need a new connecting rod and the engine would have been rebuilt for a quarter of the $$ we are spending now.
Remove plastic packaging before use
That’s the correct way of using new parts 🤣
Could the owner have an unknown enemy who had access to the car and dropped plastic pellets into the combustion chambers and into the oil filler? I understand this is an old method of ruining an engine.
That’s a good theory 👍
This engine started to produce plastic and nylon products
🤣 and it was doing a great job !
Such a Stroke, block the flow.
Yep
Job for M539 Restorations channel.
I love his videos but the last time he rebuild one of these engines it blew up again after a few minutes driving 🤣
So basically the whole engine failed because of a plastic bag?
Yes and no ! The plastic has blocked the oil pickup tube therefore killing the oil pump - the engine then ran with low oil pressure and killed two rod bearings
@@dnl35projects ..... Or and a lack of oil?
