Inside BMW's Greatest Engine

Massive thanks to @PapadakisRacing for letting us use their footage from when they tore down a B58 - check that out here! • 2020 Supra B58 Engine ...
BMW might have built one of the best all-round engines ever. It’s tuneable, reliable and you’ll find it in everything from the 1 series to the X7. This thing can fit in a hatchback and power one of those monstrous SUVs that BMW seem to love making.
Some people are even comparing it to the famous Toyota 2JZ, an engine well-known for its ridiculous reliability and ability to withstand serious power. Oh, and it was in the Mark 4 Supra which, according to the internet, can do no wrong.
So why is this being compared to one of the most iconic engines ever? And what engineering makes this thing so popular?
-
So the 2JZ, the engine from that car from that movie franchise that so many of us love - and this B58 engine in the new 1 series - what makes them so similar?
The basic similarities are that they’re both inline sixes, they’re both 3 litres and they’re both turbocharged. Despite coming from different manufacturers, you’ll also find both engines in a Supra.
Toyota controversially turned to BMW to develop an inline six for the 5th generation of Supra after an almost 20-year wait. Toyota got a lot of stick for not making their own engine from scratch, but when it comes to straight sixes, BMW is a pretty good choice.
A lot of the comparisons to the 2JZ have come from the B58s ridiculous tunability. Video games, movies and the internet have given the old Supra a reputation for being insanely over engineered and endlessly tunable.

The N54 has many reliability issues, but nothing catastrophic assuming you don't have turbo wastegate issues before 85k where they extended the warranty to and even then its not catastrophic. The N55 has less issues, but can have rod bearing issues - this is catastrophic and generally requires a new engine or a rebuild - ask me how I know :( . • TL;DR: it's not about history I find the B58 vs the 2JZ very similar to the FA20 vs the EJ25. Yes the EJ has been around for decades and yes there's more knowledge for EJ's, but the FA has a better top end, better stock turbo and better tuning potential. It's basically purists vs engineers, yes the FA also had downsides (the bottom end isn't that strong and the compression ratio is kinda high) and it wasn't put through the paces of motorsports but the knowledge learned throughout the EJ platform's lifetime is implemented into the FA's platform. You can scream and cry about how some things are better then others, but there was a time where the EJ25 and 2JZ sucked in the aftermarket department. If the drive to make the engine(s) better, it'll be better sometime down the road.

For info, the BMW F1 engine used in the 1980's, with massive turbo's and producing up to 1,500BHP from 1.5litres, was built around old M10 standard road going engine. In fact the block was the "stock block". It's only the engines from the last 15 years or so that have tended to have "reliability" issues.

Though evolution has made it a bit more reliable by getting rid of expensive piezo fuel injection and electric waterpump. N54 was more revolutionary, experimental, B58 is evolutionary step from that. And between the two we have N55 aswell.

    @donsirsimon@donsirsimon2 жыл бұрын
  • The B58 is not really just 5 years old. It is an evolution of the N54 (bi turbo) and N55 (twin scroll turbo) engines from cars like the 335i going back to 2005 iirc in the E60 535i. There are also variants like the S55 from the last M3/M4 and the S58 from the current M3/M4. Reliability issue you hear of from the earlier engines are normally from the bolt on bits and not the actual engine itself.

    • Yep! Had that motor in a ‘02 M Roadster and it pulled hard from idle to redline. Good thing too, because the 5-speed manual felt horrible.

  • The best, most reliable BMW engine of modern times is the N52 and it is still not comparable to anything Toyota makes.

    • The N52 is dummy reliable, and the 54 is probably what people compared to the 2J first

    • N54 block itself can handle 850hp+ on stock block the maintenance around it is trash but if your buying a 2jz for the 90s you’d have to put in just about the same maintenance. Plus the N54 is way more torquey bottom end because of the longer stroke.

      @edwardruelas3116@edwardruelas31162 жыл бұрын
    • @@edwardruelas3116 also the N54 has DFI which is good for preventing knock, the worst part of maintenance is the turbo wastegates but if you upgrade to TD04s it's not an issue. Injectors and HPFP, and oil filter gasket are the only other major maintenance issues. Just expensive is all.

    • The N52 is a great engine but not very tuneable. And of course isn’t comparable to anything Toyota makes because Toyota don’t have any engine as advanced as what BMW have.
