    • It's the US navy's finest hour. But also Halsey took the bait. But that was his nature. He was aggressive and the Japanese knew that.

  • Truly well done! The entire series has served to put actual people and places in battles recognized from dad, uncles, Scout leaders and parents of school mates of fellow 'boomers'. For the first time, battles and the map blend together in understanding. I listen while zooming around with google earth to locate places familiar in memory but never placed on a map.

  • I don't understand why Halsey was not charged for not covering his area during Leyte Battle, how many lives could have been saved if he had done his assigned job

    • Just saying as a Navy vet from the 70's. With Halsey, there is the man, the legend, then there is reality. There is this "mistake" @ Leyte Gulf, there is the typhoon disaster. During the war, he was portrayed as a bulldog that didn't back down, yet at times, he could be looked at as a Japanese ally, with some of his actions.

He visited the site twice first time was to respects hid BestFriend and the second time was as a hponorr guard for two men who asked to have their spread over the spot the roberts went down. He was on the Washington which sailed Hulsay north

    • @@phillipchappell6013 There were a lot of men lost their lives because of his decisions, agreed. The LPO in charge of the first engineroom I worked in, had a wife whose father worked in the forward fire room of the Johnston (DD557) who was killed when one of the first shells hit it. We were on the Johnston (DD-821).

    • @@phillipchappell6013 When on the Johnston, while in the shipyard in Philly, I got a few chances to go on a bunch of Fletcher, Sumner and Gearing class destroyers in the mothball fleet, scrounging parts off the , before they towed them out for target practice. We would cross "The Sullivan's", saluting a non existing flag and OOD requesting permission to cross. Yes, seriously. Ya had to pay respect! When I listen to these posts, I can really picture in my mind, what these people were experiencing. I would always wonder about all the people that had manned those ships, what they dealt with. My ship never fired a shot in anger, yet we all felt a duty to uphold the name Johnston. I would always think about how I would respond to that type of stress.

  • Leyte Gulf was a truly insane showdown. Yamato and Musashi were both present at this battle, which would have outclassed the forces they faced almost on their own.

  • It wasn't the size of Taffy 3's escorts in the fight--it was the size of the fight in Taffy 3's escorts. And then there were all those annoying aircraft--armed for close air support of ground forces, combat air patrol, and anti-submarine work. No wonder Japanese forces retreated.

  • When you think of how automatically and immediately and aggressively the captains of the small destroyers and destroyer escorts CHARGED DIRECTLY INTO THAT JAPANESE TASK GROUP....a few destroyers against YAMATO, the other battleship, cruisers and so many destroyers.... It is hard to imagine a POSSIBLE greater moment of gallantry and heroism....and knowing sacrifice. Those little American ships ALL jumped on a "grenade" in order to try to save the other ships...and knew what the outcome WOULD BE....as all real heros like that do.
