I loved when Dr Beard warned us not to get too smug about Rome and their slaves because WE HAVE INVISIBLE PEOPLE TOO. Brilliant and empathetic! Dr Beard is the best historian!
Difference is we didnt go out and capture them, they came here on their own free will and mostly illegally. No sympathy, only to the Brits they are effectively denying jobs.
I hated history when I was in school but know as an adult I love history
Taking turns to read lines from a textbook of lies from an egomaniac who loved girls in their summer skirts was less fun than sitting at home listening to interesting people.
One of my fav docos. Love Mary Beard!
Snap
Mary Beard is the most passionate historian on camera ,snap.
Mary is such a hero of mine, I could listen to her all day long. I went to Pompeii and Herculaneum 2 weeks ago, long long time dream realised it was truly amazing. Mary and Bettany Hughes are brilliant historians. Imagine meeting them 😮❤
Mary's enthusiasm for ancient roman history is magnetic, this series has been a joy to watch.
Mary is simply amazing. What a lady.
Bruh, that intro was phenomenal!
@@142chrisjake bruh, I’m glad you love it!
I’ve watched this documentary so many times that I’ve lost count. Mary has me hooked the whole time! It would be amazing to pick her brain, listen to a lecture of hers in person, she makes learning about Ancient Rome even more interesting and exciting than it already is (to me, at least) 😊 Thank you, Mary
Yes, an amazing woman. I have only seen it once but shall return for certain.
Well said. I followed after 5 seconds of her speaking hahaha
Ya Munster Girl I love history I had A+++ in school in the 70s its too bad they don,t teach this in schools or show films like this how many young people nowa days who don,t know sh*t about history today what a shame!.
How old is this lady? she goes everywhere Id love to see this places damit!
😅😅😅me to.
You are doing important work making these sorts of educational videos available to the public.
If you want to learn anything about the Roman Empire, Mary Beard is the person to watch. She is MAGNIFICENT. Dr. Beard brings history to life and while she does this, she invites us to question issues of civics, ethics, economics, politics, sociology. I could go on... just watch her.
Apparently not. Winning ancient battles was "strength of numbers, attacking from behind , starving your enemies out and luck"? Caesar COULD have eyes on the entire battle field because they used scouts and runners and well yes those things did happen it's a bit more than that otherwise anyone could do it. Anyone did not............the greats won battles consistently for a reason. Another person with a lot of education and no critical thinking skills it would seem. Caesar(who she's talking about when making that quote) is literally the prime example of winning battles consistently having NONE of those things going for him lol.
Then the dumb comment about the aquaducts..........suggesting they were just pomp and show lol. You have to keep the flow or water at a minor minor pace over miles and miles of terrain since water doesn't flow up hill..........meaning if you across a valley YES you need those huge aquaducts to maintain the flow properly. What a doink lol. The aren't there for show. They didn't have the fossil fuel age to power massive water pumps.
Her enthusiasm and genuine passion for Roman history is such a joy to watch.
I also love Mary's enthusiastic approach as she explains to the viewer while she wanders through time on her adventures, especially in Rome. I replay her programmes at night when my world is quiet. Ancient History was my best subject at school and my inquisitive mind is always on the alert for more learning.
Fascinating! Mary Beard is marvelous to listen to, so knowledgeable and enthusiastic
This is by far the best history lesson I have had for a while. Went out for a coffee break half way thu the video and returned for the next 2 hrs feeling refreshed and ready for more. Mary Beard keeps the ball rolling so well, making this 4 hr marathon a pleasure to watch.
same she taught me more than i learned in school 😂
can i recommend another great channel for you here, covering How Far Did Rome Explore? Voices of the Past kzhead.info/sun/hZeAkZShn3ulqWw/bejne.html
One minor contrasting opinion to a statement on Boudicca, perhaps she was a brutal leader because the Romans took everything from her...they flogged her...they RAPED her DAUGHTERS...her own children...this wasn't just leading, it was revenge....perhaps had she won, her leadership would have been different than her revenge. Perhaps, Great Britain would have become something entirely different, sure, but it wouldn't necessarily have been bad... because to Romans were brutal too...never ever forget the slaughter they wrought across some of the largest swaths of the world ...just because they created some good things didn't mean they were good...just because Boudicca was brutal in her revenge doesn't mean she was bad....
No nation, culture, people in history were ever entirely good throughout their history and all have plenty of "evil" deeds in their past. You either have an empire of you're a part of someone elses....and it's never going to be any different.
Mary I hope your life is amazing, I love all your constant and oozing appreciation + love on these topics . You are a true treasure of a soul
Warmest thanks for uploading this, I love Mary Beard's Roman documentaries - please add more of them 🙂
What do you like about them?
I could listen to her forever. I love this series and my only wish is if she was my professor at some point
I love to binge-watch history series! Thanks very much for this.
I love her energy. simply explaining everything
Wish I could travel the sites with her, because so many of the really intriguing places that she peruses are almost devoid of any other people, so she has the place to herself and that seems to lend a sense of discovery to the whole experience. She’d be a fascinating travel companion.
Mary is just great ❤
Mary Beard is incredible, and thanks to her, I have learned that the history of Rome is endlessly compelling. The colonial-imperial model of empire was perfected in a special way by Rome, and is iterated to this day by would-be conquering entities. It is the context we live in, the water we swim in. Beard’s expert appreciation is such a good education for all of us laypeople.
mary beard is an inspiration!!! she rules.
Fascinating trek through the Roman "brand"of culture, trade, and conquest.
Excellent, Fascinating Journey and Lessons presented of another time with extraordinary relevance. Well done Mary !
I just adore Mary this series just got better and better. So much passion and knowledge and story telling by the fabulous Mary - had me transfixed
I could listen to Mary's voice all day. She is such a storyteller.
So long I had to watch in 2 takes. I love Rome. I love this lady :)
I have always been fasinard with Ancient Rome. I live in the United States and dream of someday taking a trip to Rome.
"Ready to greet and possibly humiliate you." So, dinner parties haven't changed at all!
😂😂😂
I’m here for the history and Mary’s dope kicks 🤙🏽
Mary is a real treasure, I was riveted for the entire duration albeit spread over a couple of evenings. So much we need to learn from this story of our ancient ancestors, truly fascinating and illuminated so vlvidly and passionately by Mary. Thank you whomever uploaded this.
Outstanding thank you watched it straight through even at work 😅
Love the channel and LOVE Mary's excitement and take on it. Is there a way to find out which video's she has done on this channel?
Informative and wonderfully done! Bravo!🤗🏛
Imagine being the person in charge of that helmet and seeing Mary put it on. Life flashing before their eyes😅
Mary is the best!!
Mrs.beard is an intelligent storyteller ❤i enjoy her immensely 👍👏😍

I love this exchange. Thank you 😎
Thank you Prof Mary on shedding some light on. Timgad, Algeria, and the historical notoriety there 2:05:01
Thanks. Always fun to see options.
"In the midst of battle, when chaos reigns and fear grips the heart, remember this: the true battlefield lies within oneself. Conquer the doubts, the temptations of weakness, and the tumult of emotions. For it is not the external foe that defines victory, but the inner strength and resilience of the warrior's spirit." - Marcus Aurelius
Buy one of her books! It’s an informative, fun read.
The statue of the wolf and the twins appears in many towns and cities around Romania, where I'm from. I never knew what it represented and why it's so prominent, until I randomly came across it in this documentary.
I think this is simply the best video on Roman history I have ever seen! Diversity is really not new nor is inclusion.
You do.know that Slavery was the foundation of the Roman economy ?? ......Try to learn more before posting complete drivel !
Alex Kingston does a wonderful portrayal of Boudicca
great documentary
*_39:15_**_ crazy music. What is it called?_*
One of the best documentary about Rome I've ever watched, thank you! Highly recommend the 1950's famous British travel writer H V Morton's book "A Traveller in Rome", he went deep dive into the eternal city, basically living like a local, sharing its history, architectures, different cultures/people of various neighborhoods, religious insights, & eating at hundred years old coffee/tea shops. I learned so much. Rome really is an unique city that one can travel to so many times yet still finding new discoveries around the corners each time.
Merry Christmas! 🎄 Hope you and yours have great holidays. Bet the new year brings you many more treasures!🥂
You can’t ask for a better story teller than Mary Beard.
😍😍 Nice video brother ❤❤ thank you so much for shating video ❤❤ a lot of knowledge 😍😍 i really like and watching your video so much
Just love Mary. She must be in her 80s but she just carries on. A role model for us all.
Not true. She was born 1955
@@delzworld2007 Good God. It must be all that sun.
@@user-mi7zx2ki5onot nice to comment on people's appearances
@@jamesculton8058 Quite, absolutely I apologize. I was just surprised.
@@user-mi7zx2ki5o How might YOU look when you're 68?
Geez, how many kids floated down rivers in baskets in the olden days. Like half of ancient heroes took a trip down a river in a basket.
It’s a mystery why Hannibal didn’t push onto Rome when he had the chance. He had conquered throughout Northern Italy and Rome was there like a ripe plum ready to be picked. We might all be studying Ancient Punic History and Language instead if he had!
Well, it's not too late for you.
i came back home from a 2 day camping trip and this was on my pc
Mary you are one cool lady! I thoroughly enjoy your enthusiasm for history and culture❤ I’d like to think in the past you were a tough gin making witch. I mean that in the most respectful of ways. 😂
worth to subscribed!
*_10:23_**_ What is the music?_*
Those kicks rock!!
Thank goodness the ancient Romans liked graffiti and included so much detail about the deceased on their tombs. Our headstones say little beyond things like "beloved wife" and date of birth and death.
Currently reading her book SPQR. Highly recommend it.
Great series, but it's already on a channel in the History Hit stable - why the need for another?
the UK has some of the best antiquarians in the world: Mary Beard, Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, Joann Fletcher...superb, each and every one. I never tire of watching their videos (especially Mary Beard's video about Pompeii...mesmerizing!)
A four hour preview of what Heaven will be like. In Paradise I shall sit before a giant screen and listen to Prof. Beardsley talk about ancient Rome for Eternity.
Uncanny the parallels between the Roman Empire’s rise and fall, and that of modern civilizations. Can human nature really be denied?
Humanity isn´t a species. Mr. Smith received confirmation by mind fusion with Neo. Mr. Smith already knew this through his private investigation. Why, do you think, Sherlock was canceled? Khan is a Vulcan. Vulcans are clones "who" were breeded for mind fusion.
What’s the song at 39:16?
For the love of everything that is dear to ROME somebody tell me what the music on 39:15 called?
I wish I had Mary as my history teacher in higschool.
i need to know the song at 3:50:15
Kind of light on facts and heavy on Mary. Implying that Scipio's invasion was not needed, just a flex? Hanibal had been laying waste to the Italian peninsula for 10-15 years, and was still there when Scipio made his gambit? And then the bit about 'a senator' said 'Carthago delenda est'. How about treat the audience like adults and name that senator, he wasn't exactly obscure, his name was Cato. Overall I'd say this is fine for middle schoolers, but even then I think its a very lightweight documentary.
Bruh we need more roads like theirs.
Best history lesson and that's true but May dear, it is Carthagian or as you say Carthagenian? Roman or Romanian (I couldn't help it)
Teacher i like to book spqr.i read very good!!!!...
Awesome host.
Never did I expect the this Roman Empire to include Britain and Israel. I know I should watch this video again in it's entity and I will.... but, I need to get back to the present now so, I expect in a few days? And I must confess I never liked learning about history before so, wow.... thank you so much.... I guess Rome is the answer and certainly what I was missing out on!!
the rise and fall of ancient rome good show
You should make the thumbnail when she put on the helmet.
I love this comment.

Mary slayyyyyys
Wonderful programme, but Time Team fans will recognize the gorgeous orange pottery as Samian ware, the expensive stuff of aristocratic Roman villas. Given that, this is an enjoyable and interesting commentary.
Terrific video, Mary is a superb presenter. But what's a historian doing saying Paul was from "Turkey", he was from Asia Minor or Anatolia. There was no such thing as Turkey 2,000 yrs ago.
I agree completely. "Turkey" is a modern nationalistic term. Here we are talking geography, history and culture. It is therefore Asia Minor. The later Turk invaders must be left out of it.
I couldn't help but wonder as to why Hadrian built that lavish villa since he hardly spent a full day in it. Perhaps he thought that his reign would have been easier than it turned up to be? Surely his life was not much easier than that of a Roman slave.
Dan, thank you so much for this wonderful production. I’ve just booked this trip in November. Can’t wait! All my thanks to you!
woke up at 3 hour mark, pls dont jump scare me like that golem
Did she used to give tours in London? She looks and sounds exactly like a tour guide we had there about a decade ago.....
Just a reminder to all the non-bots to ignore all the crazy crypto comments. I'm here for Rome.
I heard that mrs. Annie Harris will fight your enemies on the battlefield. For a 20% share of the victory spoils, of course.
I'd love to go see these places, but I'm practically a peasant.
A very fine overview of Roman history with many finer details that described Roman history in toto. A lifetime is not enough to understand Roman history. I see parallels between the fall of Western Rome and the USA and Western Europe when common sense gave way to the absurd. Where opposition to the myths like men can get pregnant et al is cause for lifetime cancellation and derision. Emperor Eligabalus was a prime example of the rot of morals and good common sense of the system. George Orwell in his book 1984 described the methodology and reasoning of this societal rot promulgated by the ruling class. Power is always the ultimate goal. Ruling in hell is preferable to serving in heaven. This is the cause of all Empirial downfalls. ALL!
I wonder if this has any way, even in the smallest, in shaping the different kinds of British Citizenships today + recent past like Full British Citizens, BDTC/BOTC/CUKC, BN(O), BOC, BPP, British Subject with/without ROA; this is without counting ones like diplomatic or specials and probably many I missed... insanity
If Mary Beard lives another 20-30 years, she could present the autopsy of the American Empire.
At 2:34:34 we don't know any British who had made it big in Rome... What about Bigus Dickus ?
2:54:43 on the fall
Extremely interesting and Mary Beard makes that so. But, the bit about the ice from the Greenland, explained as the bubbles were the result of greenhouse gas caused by Rome, doesn't cut it for me. For one, the jet stream and earth rotation doesn't make that a logical assumption. Further, there have been mini glacial periods with the last climaxing in 1875 and warm periods with the last one in the 1400's, a cool period about 500 years prior, another warm period about 500 years before that. At the time Greenland was last "discovered" and inhabited, it was in a warm period sufficient that people came to farm. When it was so "suddenly" vacated, it had become too cold to inhabit. These oscillation of the planet on her axis cause these differing climates and are so far apart and slow in bringing about a change that then seems rapid, affects also lives of living organism, plants and bacteria that end up in water run off causing decay, releasing methane as little bubbles in water that then freezes. To blame a civilization, down wind is ludicrous. If scientists want to go that route, America and Asia would have had more influence on Greenland's ice bubbles. But, it in truth it is likely more the increase in living organism during warm periods that then disappear from existence during mini-glacial periods. Climate does change and it always has but not for the reasons that are currently being used to manipulate economy. The next warm period climaxes in 2396 give or take. We've been warming since 1875.
