No. 8 Virginia Tech fell 80-76 to No. 3 Iowa in a matchup of two of last year’s Final Four teams at the Ally Tipoff. Georgia Amoore was a force for the Hokies all night long, dropping in 7 threes in a 31-point effort, including a halfcourt buzzer beater to end the first quarter and a clutch three with 5 seconds left to pull the Hokies within one possession at the end. Elizabeth Kitley had a 16-point, 16-rebound double double despite taking a forearm to the face just as the second half got underway. Iowa’s Caitlin Clark led all scorers and finished with 44 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in a back-and-forth thriller of a game that set a women’s basketball regular-season attendance record in the state of North Carolina.

  • For most of the game Iowa couldn't *buy* a bucket! Only their defence kept them alive. Then in Q4 they started to put things together. Lesson in how to win a game even if almost everyone's having an off-night.

  • Although the Hawkeyes brought me to women’s collegiate basketball, I’m a fan now. I had eliminated all team sports from my life, the social justice, political correctness, the blm nonsense etc the last decade was to much for my old a$$ , Ladies, don’t let them ruin your game, Once sports fans truly give women’s college basketball a good look , most will stay with you, You play with passion, excellence, joy , you are tough, My daughters are professional athletes in the equine world, they are tough, compete with joy yet fierce I’ve followed women’s sports my entire life, from Flo Jo , to Abby Steiner to many more, I value my time and have limited time to watch anything, I make the time for you ladies, Watching this sport is such a pleasant surprise for me, Thank you

    • Well said KHart. Everything you posted, AND I wanna add one more fact….. The difference in the current women’s college basketball, compared to 30 years ago and further back. That difference is how much better coordination the women display in their games now. They now even look like they have reached the skill level of men’s basketball. Compare women’s current games to their games 30 years ago and you can see the change. It even shows in their scores. In the 70’s & 80’s the winning game scores were in the 30 point range. Now they equal men’s game scores . Obvious as hell and it makes women’s basketball easy to watch because we are all impressed with the individual abilities and team capabilities. Add the super knowledge of the female coaches as well. This is one man who is proud of women playing basketball now. Thank You. We knew you had it in you.

    • I also generally did not like women's basketball (no quickness, can't jump, I could go on about the things with the women's game that annoy me), and I also strongly dislike the politicization of sport -- and to be honest, the obvious relaxing of admissions standards for the sake of big-time sports bothers me -- but I do enjoy watching some women's basketball today -- not every team, but some, especially ones with interesting character and interesting characters -- and this Va Tech team is one of those

    • @@RichardII_LionheartFree throws were 22-8 and half the fouls that Clark drew were completely bogus. She blatantly elbowed a girl in the ribs and it was called on the defending player. The refs literally would not allow anyone to guard her, almost every time she drove to the basket it was called a foul.

      @defer114@defer1146 ай бұрын
    • @@defer114 Foul disparities are most often the result of one team shooting jump shots and the other team going inside, especially by driving to the basket. That pattern was evident in this game. Virginia Tech was mostly content to shoot outside jumpers; Kitley inside was happy to take fadeaways, which also do not often draw fouls. Four of VT's fouls were called in the last minute of the game when VT had to foul to get the ball and give themselves a chance. Clark saw early that the refs were going to call the game close and but were inclined give the offensive player the benefit of doubt. She used that to her advantage by driving at every opportunity. That's just smart basketball. Amoore by contrast rarely drives (60% of her FGA are threes) and she shoots only 2.0 FTA per game. Clark by contrast shoots from distance (48% of her FGA are threes) but also often drives to the basket. Between her ball handling and her change of pace, she is adept at drawing fouls from defenders and averages 6.9 FTA per game.

    @thomas-gw3xf@thomas-gw3xf6 ай бұрын
    • If a defensive player is riding them on the side, the offensive player can use the arm as an armbar (but not extend the arm) to clear the defensive player, if the defensive player is almost attached to the hip. A defensive player should always be in front of the offensive player, not on their side.
