By the time the Iraq War of 2003 started, USAF had a number of female fighter pilots. One of them was Kim 'Killer Chick' Campbell, an A-10 pilot with the 75th FS. Although she had already served a combat tour in Afghanistan the year before, she was still relatively inexperienced when she flew combat in Iraq. She and her leader were called to support American ground troops in the outskirts of Baghdad. Her A-10 was hit by a missile and Campbell succeeded in something that few pilots before and even after her succeeded.

  • I had read of this mission before but it was nice to see a video of it. She kept her cool in a bad situation and saved her aircraft and possibly herself. Another great video !

  • Great video but wish you kept your regular intro, "Hello everyone, this is Showtime 1-1-2." It has a therapeutic ring to it. Did A-10's fly with sidewinders in Iraqi Freedom? I'm presuming they did but question the value.

    • Probably for the earliest missions, but quickly left behind once the Iraqi Air Force ceased to exist in the face of Coalition dominance.

    • Thank you for the suggestion. I might reintroduce the intro in the future. I couldn't find specific details about AIM-9s but there are several photos of A-10s in OIF which show them carry two pieces under right wing. I suppose they could have carried them still at this point since nobody was sure if Iraqi Air Force could launch some desperate attack with their remaining fighters.

  • Its as much a testament to the rugged design of the A10 as it is to her skill as an aviator that she put that aircraft down. Everything about it is built for pilot survivability, and i think an aircraft like the A10 should be upgraded rather than retired. Its still a very capable and handy aircraft to have and it makes me wonder why more air forces aorund the world dont field it as a CAS/GA aircraft.

  • I didn't know that A-10 had a back up manual mode in case of hydralics failure. The story of KC is also interesting... She insisted on her dream and finally made it to the air force academy. Then she flew in real operations, got hit by SAM (probably a missile with small warhead more likely SA-7/9/13/16 which iraqi army operated many of them) then switched on manual mode and finally landed safely having done something which probably she was never trained to do... Remarkable courage for a female pilot! I'm sure there are other interesting soviet female pilot stories from eastern front which should be presented. As always a top quality DCS video for military aviation enthousiasts! Keep up the good work!

  • As always top quality video! In general women fighter pilots in USAF and NAVY is an interesting topic, but women fighter pilots flying A-10’s is a brilliant idea for the video. A-10 is my favorite airframe in DCS and in general. I still can’t believe that such a highly specialized aircraft so many times were on the brink of retirement from its service. Just two days ago I’ve seen remarkable documentary about this topic on DroneScapes channel (I really hope it’s ok to talk about other channel here in comments) and there was a lot of new information for me. I’m sure all the aviation enthusiasts and especially Warthog fans would find something interesting in the video. And thank you very much @Showtime112 for another great story about the aviation.

  • I remember seeing this aircraft on a trailer ready to be shipped back to the US. A flying wreck. The squadron think in was a French built Roland missile. Lack of hydraulics made this a muscle job, she was not a large person. This pilot was a real pilot bringing that flying wreck home. As I understand it, she went back to the US (with her husband who was also a A-10 pilot) to discuss this. The Air Force academy was embroiled in turmoil due to harassment and they decided she was assigned to teach at the academy and not go back to squadron service. She fought this and was reassigned back to her squadron. Could be BS, but it is what I heard from Air Force RumorCon.

    @stevensonDonnie@stevensonDonnie13 күн бұрын
    • Thanks for sharing. It could have been a Roland, KC said in her interviews that no official investigation was done to assess it precisely. Concerning how two guys in Desert Storm failed to land in manual reversion, her landing is an accomplishment. She flew more combat missions in Iraq but I'm not sure exactly what happened between the end of the Iraq War and her next combat tour in Afghanistan.

    • The USAF hasn’t faced a real Air Force in over 50 years. The North Vietnamese Air Force was small, but well trained and equipped by the Soviets. They had more ace pilots than the US did, mostly because if you were a VPAF pilot, you didn’t have a one year tour. You flew until the war ended, or you died. Their kill ratio against the US was far greater than that of the Soviets/Chinese/NoKo forces from the Korean War. A far more worthy opponent than the incompetent and unwilling Iraqis….
