Frogs Are Going Extinct - Here's How We Can Save Them | WILD HOPE
Many of the world’s most beloved frogs and amphibians are headed for extinction, but inside “The Ark” in Panama, some of those threatened species are given a fighting chance. Using innovative technology and breakthrough genetics, researchers have ignited a cadre of solutions to save these rare and cherished species.
The Ark at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama houses hundreds of large, captive communities of frogs, some of which no longer exist in the wild. Here, scientists hope to bring these species back from the brink of extinction and solve the world’s worst wildlife pandemic: an amphibian-killing fungus known as chytrid.
In a quarantined lab, these biologists bathe frogs in fungicide and hope to spark a viable immune response from the captive animals. Meanwhile, in the field, other researchers use artificial intelligence to listen to frog songs and identify so-called “lost frogs” that survive chytrid in the wild - any of which may hold the key to fighting the disease. Safeguarding a future for frogs isn't easy, but these tactics in Panama have been so successful that they’re being replicated in facilities across the globe. The effort may seem monumental, but the safety and preservation of amphibians worldwide hangs in the balance.

I remember when I was a kid (73 years ago) I could hear frogs 🐸 singing after a rain storm now I don’t hear them at all..now I know why I miss being young
I´m 47. And when I was a kid it was the same, frogs everywhere and eggs in every pool in spring time. We kids used to collect tadpoles to raise them. I didn´t know about this desease, I thought it was all due to habitat loss and pesticides...
I moved to a more rural town on the coast of Florida and I can hear the frogs, especially during mating season....at first I had no idea what the noise was. It is very soothing.
I'm only 25 and I remember when I was a kid snow on the ground all winter, and every summer it was 70-80 with clear blue skies, I live in washington, and now it practically never snows in the winter where I live, summer can reach 110 or higher, and all summer long it's suggested you don't go outside because the skies are thick with wildfire smoke.

It's horrifying. I was born in the early 80s and I honestly can't express to people born in the late 90s or early 2000s how much of a shift it's been.
If you own land, create habitat. Nature isn’t supposed to be a destination. Nature is everywhere, but we’re all killing it to create “pretty” properties
I preached about this all the time here in Florida with everybody draining their yards off like they do we don't have 3 weeks for the tadpoles to grow into frogs I literally put 5 gallon buckets all over my yard and my horse trough I have more frogs in my yard and almost no mosquitoes if we don't keep the frog population up to where it should be none of us will be here there are first indicators

When I was a kid I remember watching a documentary on Smithsonian it was called mission critical and they were looking for harlequin frogs love that this lab is still working and doing great shit
I’m so glad frogs are still pretty common here in the Mojave Desert in southern Utah. You can still hear thousands of baja california tree frogs singing during monsoon season and on warm winter days. I have definitely noticed this is northern Utah, and other places I’ve visited though - a very noticeable lack of amphibians. I hope this disease never ravages this still somewhat pristine desert. It is kind of ironic and very sad to think I see more frogs in the desert than I did on the wet, forested east coast..

Holy cow! Thank God for people who are doing this seemingly impossible task! May God bless them. This is why we need billions of scientists! Not just a few thousand or whatever. And why we urgently need to start cleaning up the earth!
Avid frog fan, the frog we have the greatest problem with here in South Africa is the Painted Reed Frog, their entire habitat has been reduced to some decorative pond in a country club in Morningside. Good to see harlequins alive never knew they were still around in captivity
The country club should make a habitat for the frogs by law
This is a great project for raising awareness of amphibian mass extinction. But effort should be focused in keeping the species ALIVE by keeping biotopes viable and natural spaces large enough and linked. Long live the frogs 🐸🌸
When I was a child too, after rains there were frogs everywhere, salamanders everywhere. Not soo much anymore. I'm trying to make better habitat on land.

If you're interested in seeing some of these rare frogs in the wild in Costa Rica (and financially help eco-lodges that protect vital frog habitat), I'd recommend CRARC for Agalychnis Lemur (the bright green frog in the video) and Yatama Eco Lodge for Triprion Spinosus (the mottled brown frog). when I was little, every time it rains, toads and frogs would come out after and I always remember going out to the garden and just watch them, they’re everywhere and the babies were absolutely adorable 🥺 now I rarely see them and I only see mature toads but never frog, and it literally been years since I last saw a baby toad and frog 😢

I like Frogs. Mostly most Tropical Frogs anyway. I even seen some Tropical looking frogs make some appearances on some of my favorite animated & Live Action shows & movies. From Muppets, to Kulipari & finally Amphibia.

Fungi can be eaten by other living things, like bacteria and insects. Hopefully they can figure out a type of microbe that will eat that specific fungus. I wish I could go to Central America and help these people. I lived in Costa Rica for 9 years and I speak Spanish fluently, plus I love the tropics.

I've been noticing the decline for twentyish years. Every year, there are less of my buddies. I have always loved frogs and Toads. What is happening to our birds and all of the wildlife. Humans destroy everything. We are the worst creatures on earth and the ones who should be going extinct. But instead we overpopulate and care for no one but ourselves. The few who do care cannot seem to Make enough of a difference to change it.

Why are frogs more affected than salamanders?
Salamanders are also affected. I think the video was simply highlighting the story here with these frogs. However, there is another species of chytrid (B. salamandrivorans; Bsal) that is particularly bad for salamanders. But this species of chytrid has not yet been detected in the Americas.
Frogs depend on water more.
Something about their big eyes just makes them look so cute. And that round face.
