Who wants to play normal chess when you can introduce some gin into the mix? The rules are simple - if you take a piece, you take a shot. Enjoy over an hour of Richard Hammond, James May, a chess board, and slightly too much alcohol…

    • Well to be fair the gin and tonic is like it says gin AND tonic With some ice as well: the ice would dilute it so that helps and the tonic water helps with the taste of the gin as opposed to the NEAT gin ( meaning gin on its own) They were taking a shot of, no ice, no tonic, just gin ( Your average beer is ~4-6 percent abv ,alcohol by volume, Gin, however on average is ~37.5-50 abv ,abv can be summed up as the higher the number the stronger the drink ,given the fact they are drinking Asian parsnip normal strength ,as dictated via the colour of the label on the bottle, James's gin which is 40 percent) so imagine having to take a shot of 40 percent gin every time you take a piece, you'd get sloshed rather quickly. TLDR; their reactions to the drink are not as strong in the fish bowl because they put stuff in the drink to make the drink not as strong

  • 34:21 Hammond is right. there's actually been studies on that effect. a room with no distractions, a taser on the table, and put a single person in that room for half an hour, with no sense of how long has passed.. they'll tase themselves as they don't like boredom.

  • As a chess player...i just want to point out that Hammond's opening move F5 (out of a possible 20), is statistically the worst opening he could have picked...

    • Yep. After 1. e4 f5 2. e x f5 c5 instead of 3. f6 3. Qh5+ just wins by force (3…g6 4. f x g6 Nf6 5. g7+ Nxh5 6. g x h8 = Q and White is a rook ahead just for starters)
